"A nice mix of locals having dinner after work and well-heeled travelers come to Shinja Kanesaka's twelve-seat sushi counter at the Palace Hotel. Kanesaka's technique and brigade are textbook-perfect: Otsumami small bites are his wheelhouse (sliced yellowtail wrapped around daikon radish ribbons, sweet amaebi shrimp topped with uni), and the nigiri are wonderfully balanced." - Melinda Joe

Gorgeous sushi in a nice setting with friendly chefs who can speak a bit of English, and excellent service from start to finish. Lunch is particularly of great value. The cut of the fish is spot on, not just high quality fresh fish but the cut affects everything. And the rice is perfect for me. Every bite is a delight. Amongst trying other Michelin from Kyushu to Hiroshima to Sapporo (we hit 10 stars during last trip), I come back here time and time again every time we go to Japan. I do normally try out some other Michelin sushi places, there's one other place I love but they only do dinner. Advance booking required.

Google
It is best described in a single sentence. The BEST sushi that I have ever eaten. Sat at the 'counter' for an amazing experience. The chef was personal and engaging. The atmosphere was semi-formal, appropriate for the restaurant. It was expensive but worth every dollar. If you have only one special meal in Japan, make sure this is the restaurant.

Google
Food, the sushi is outstanding. Perhaps some of the best bites of food I have ever had. If traditional nigiri sushi is what you want, you will find that here. The staff and the sushi chefs are not very friendly however. They certainly were skilled but the overall vibe of the restaurant felt cold and unfriendly. Probably the least enjoyable 2+ star michelin restaurant I have ever experienced. Generally places with even one michelin star makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. The food was definitely 2 star caliber. But felt rather like they were doing us a big favor to even let us try their food. It was probably just in my imagination, but I did not feel welcome there.

Google
huge disappointments at sushi kanesaka during our trip in Japan.. Our first impression was really bad because our sushi chef was a nail biter with nasty cuticles and nail. I have been to many omakase places in my life and I have never seen a chef with dirty fingers. It just disgusted me.. sashimi cut was inconsistent, speed was way too fast in the beginning and we had to let chef to slow down which he did later. Other chef was laughing and giggling so loud (louder than customers) and we couldn't enjoy our dinner. Customers are expecting a lot when restaurants get two Michelin stars. Ambience, service and food have to be on point, especially when customers pay $$$. I personally don't think sushi kanesaka deserves two.. not even one Michelin star. It was the worst omakase I have ever had and was waste of $700.

I had my lunch here and had the nigiri set. I was really disappointed this time as the head chef has left the place and set up his own restaurant. Believe it or not, the experience of chef who mould the sushi rice will determine how tasty the sushi is. I guess the taste had gone with the chef. It is really a pity! I think this will be my last time here. I shall visit the head chef restaurant in the future. Nevertheless, if you wish to dine here, remember to make your reservation early.

Google
Your typical omakase sushi place hidden away in an upscale hotel. We came here for lunch and paid 7500 each for a 10 nigiri course. Make sure you make reservations or you might not be able to get seated if they're all booked out. The service and food were both excellent.

Google
Jiro who??? Don't get caught up in brand name omekase places... All we could say is WOW! For the price you pay you would expect flawless and that's basically what you get at Sushi Kanesaka! The chef is knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. The food is second to none, fresh, tasty and unique. I could not fault it, also the service from waitstaff was incredible. He also made recommendations for other restaurants to visit which is how we found Nodaiwa. Thanks again, we hope to return soon. Thanks again Chef Shunsuke Kikuchi

Google
Stuffy atmosphere makes it hard to enjoy. I was also questioned by the ground floor staff for sitting in the hotel lobby whilst waiting for my partner (despite being guests of the restaurant). There are many nicer places in Tokyo

Yelp
Superb sushi! My colleague and I had omegas at Sushi Kanesaka, and we had a marvelous time! The setting is a small sushi bar with about 16 settings. The seafood was fresh, varied, interesting. The rice was Tokyo style sushi. The service was attentive. The sushi chef did a great job!

Yelp
Amazing omakase experience. Sushi chef pays close attention to your style of eating and caters to it very subtly. For example person I dined with wasn't as adept at eating the entire nigiri so he started cutting it into two parts. An amazing experience with super high end fish. The toro, horse mackerel, squid, and amberjack were butter.

Yelp
The sushi here was top notch. Each piece was buttery and delicious. Reservations here are not terribly hard to get and it was nice that they were opened during a Japanese holiday.

Yelp
Fantastic sushi made even better by the skilled and friendly chef. The nigiri was as fresh as I hoped it would be and I liked it even better than sushi I had yesterday at the Tsujuki Market. The variety was impressive and each piece was excellent and initially I thought the Toro was the standout but it's hard to say because every selection was outstanding and just when I thought it couldn't get better - the chef presented even better nigiri. This is great sushi where quality and freshness stand out.

Yelp
On our last night in Tokyo we decided to splurge on a sushiya. We scored a reservation at Sushi Kanesaka through our hotel concierge (they don't take reservations from foreigners). Kanesaka was on our list of several higher end sushiyas to try to get a reservation at (a list that included Jiro, Saito, etc). Since Kanesaka trained such acclaimed sushi chefs like Saito we thought it'd be a good one to try. It also has a Michelin star and it's easy to see why. Our sushi chef was a young guy, by sushi chef standards, but already had 17 years of experience. The dexterity or his hands creating a piece of nigiri was quick and impressive. Nearly every bite we had was delicious, a few even elicited an "mmmmm" or "oishii!" from yours truly. We enjoyed our time here and it was a wonderful way to end our trip. Highly recommended. They have a great lunch deal too.

Yelp
Quality. Enjoy for yourself to understand the positive reviews. My wife and I savoured every bite of our amazing, sushi experience. You will receive a warm greeting from the Kanesaka team. In addition to excellent service and attention from the English speaking sushi chefs. 2 omakase menus, 2 beers and 2 bottles of Perrier's, cost $500.00 + USD. We left happy. When we arrived, we witnessed an abusive, loud male customer, being rude and condescending to the staff. Apparently there was no availability for his party of two.

Yelp
Quick tips: Best nigri sushi and sashimi in Tokyo. I have also been to other Michelin star restaurants in Tokyo like Sushi Aioki and they don't hold a candle to Kanesaka. Be prepared to spend at least $150 per person for the most basic menu. Watching the sushi chef prepare the sashimi and sushi is a unique experience. They typically close their eyes when preparing, presumably to primarily emphasize their sense of touch to make sure the nigri-sushi is properly prepared over rice. Food: I believe they are accommodating, but they have three different pre fixe menus you can order from and you can inform your sushi chef of anything in particular you have an aversion too (for me, this was squid). Just for those who are new to sushi and sashimi in Tokyo, you typically can't find typical maki rolls, but you can special request maki rolls here. I probably seeme dlike a dumb American but I specialliyt requested a scallop maki roll, which was probably the best maki roll I've ever had! Ambiance: Small intimate setting in the Palace hotel. You watch your sushi chef prepare everything over a wooden table. Very traditional. Service: Great service. Somewhat minimal English skills, but you will get by like we did.

Yelp
Sushi kanesaka is a must if you are visiting to tokyo anytime soon.. was lost to find this place although was very excited to try sushi kanesaka! Very different level of sushi where the original traditional was made here in japan. The ambience very pleasant and just excited to try all these fresh sushi

Yelp
Great sushi ..every bite is heaven. If you are on a budget, go during lunch. Much cheaper

Yelp
Michelin quality sushi located on the 6th floor of an exquisite hotel near central Tokyo, what a treat! Reservations have to be ahead of time as this place only seats around 10 or so. Chef is extremely knowledgeable and willing to chat about the food (even with non-Japanese speaking customers). The service is fantastic, as soon as I said my name they recognized my reservation for the day and directed me to my seat, along with a cozy cup of green tea. My water and tea cups were never below 3/4 full, extremely attentive and accommodating staff. Then, the show began... Kanesaka offers pre-set meals and omakase, I elected for the omakase and had a front row seat to all the preparations. I noticed the chef here is extremely precise and fluid with portion sizing, larger guests receive slightly larger pieces/servings. I had about 20 courses with a variety of extremely fresh fish, including tuna, fatty tuna (otoro), scallop, tiger shrimp, eel, and of course my favorite of the night - uni! Umami bomb in your mouth is the best way I can describe a mouthful of soft, sweet as the ocean-sea uni. It's pricey, but if you're in it for an unforgettable sushi experience, you won't regret it!
