Notable Seattle Restaurants That Opened (or Reopened) Recently | Eater Seattle

"The Los Angeles–based sushi chain opened an outpost at 122 Westlake Avenue N with a flashy atmosphere and a menu that includes sushi and Japanese dishes like spicy tuna rolls with crispy charred rice, kiwi scallops with yuzu, and creamy popcorn shrimp tempura, alongside sake and beer; available for takeout and limited dine-in." - Gabe Guarente

Google
Definitely a good 4-star sushi! Their special lunch options were pretty good! The nigiri’s are good and all the fishes we tried were fresh. We liked what we had, but I have had better nigiri’s than this. If I could I would give them 4.5! I would recommend this place, specially for lunch!

Google
Walked in on a weekday for dinner and it was the best decision we made. Ordered seafood tempura, assorted nigiri, double salmon roll, and a mixed appetizer. All amazing and reasonably priced. Great service, too. Highly recommended.

Google
Had a great lunch here. I had little to no expectations when I came here, as it was a late lunch time and I found this restaurant close by my parents’ hotel. Food was delicious, service was wonderful. I ordered the negitoro hand rolls & shrimp popcorn and those taste great! Glad I came here to try it out :)

Always a delight to be at this place! The food is amazing and very beautifully presented. The soft shell crab was my favourite and the service was great too.

Enjoyed a lovely outdoor meal at a sushi place nestled right across from the park on Westlake. The service was excellent with staff who were attentive, friendly, and made everything flow smoothly. The food itself was a solid four stars. It was fresh and satisfying, even if it didn’t completely wow me. The location is very convenient for those near the Citizen Hotel or Whole Foods. If your hotel is farther out, be prepared for some steep hills that might be challenging for guests with ADA considerations. Construction in the area can also make Uber arrivals unpredictable, so it’s worth planning ahead. Inside the restaurant, there are three steps, but they’ve thoughtfully installed an ADA-accessible elevator to make things easier. Altogether, this spot delivers with a relaxed vibe, well-prepared sushi, and top-notch service. I’d happily return and recommend it to others exploring the Westlake area.

We were visiting from out of town and were hoping for a good sushi spot, but unfortunately, this place didn’t meet our expectations. The quality of the sushi was subpar, particularly the rice, which had a bitter taste. The spicy mayo didn’t resemble what we’re used to, and even the soy sauce had an off flavor. I ended up just picking at my food because I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. If you're used to high quality sushi, this might NOT be the place for you.

Google
Cannot recommend this place highly enough!! I was staying in a hotel across the street, so decided to have dinner here on a Saturday evening during a recent visit to Seattle. From the moment I walked in, everyone working there was friendly and welcoming. I sat at the sushi counter area, and enjoyed talking to the guys working behind the counter. The food was fantastic!! I got a piece of salmon sushi, the spicy salmon roll, and the dragon roll. All were excellent. The quality of the salmon sushi was excellent - buttery and soft. My favorite thing that I had, though, was the corn tempura! It's little rectangles of corn that have been tempura fried, and it's served with a garlic butter dipping sauce. You have to try it - it's so good!! It's honestly one of those things that I'm almost sad I tried, because I was in from out of town and can't get it here, haha. Highly recommend this place though, and I will definitely be back if I come back to Seattle!

Google
Enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Sushi Katsu-ya. The Corn Tempura appetizer & Miso Black Cod dinner set were flavourful, delicious, & well executed in presentation. The Chef's Special Scallop with black caviar was a great addition to the meal. Cassi was my server. She was so kind & sweet. I felt well taken care of by her. Overall the staff showed warm hospitality including JP & Orlando. The sushi chefs greet you upon entering & they thank you in Japanese on the way out. Glad i had the chance to dine at this hidden gem 💎 during my short visit to Seattle. Would love to return in the future. 💜

Yelp
The food was really good! But i think kind of pricey for what it is. We came for dinner and had 5 people or so. The total came out to over 200 with gratuity. At the same time - it is sushi so it's not surprising it's more expensive. The interior is not super large- so if you have a big group I would probably recommend maybe calling in advance. They do have nice outdoor seating though!

Yelp
Tried this spot again as had done a workout and needed food open after 8 and luckily this spot was still open. We were seated instantly and the restaurant was decently busy with about like half the tables full. The service is nice and the spot is nice in the center of slu. As for the food, I really enjoyed the slu roll but my friend had bones in their bite which isn't great I feel but all my pieces were super yummy with no bones. I liked how it was a crisp refreshing taste and I would def get this roll again. I thought the scallion yellowtail roll was just okay and didn't care for it and def wouldn't get it again, I felt like there was a weird aftertaste and my friend thought it was too sour. The spicy salmon was just alright, tasty tho, I did notice the rolls weren't rolled too tight bc they kind of fell apart. The brussel Sprouts were yummy very flavorful, maybe a little salty and too saucy for me personally. My friend did think the taste of the fish for all the rolls were very good though.

Yelp
very cute sushi spot. nice interior and they were very kind and welcoming. gave us a hot towel to start and i would definitely come back! would not recommend the crispy rice tuna bites they were not crispy or worth $16. tuna was fine. i loved their salmon + tuna sashimi and nigiris rolls were also great. got the westlake and spicy red dragon. tempura was also good, loved the seasonal options and miso soup was also nicely flavored and delicious. 9/10! would definitely be back for their lunch specials and happy hour

Yelp
What a great spot for sushi! They have some very reasonable rolls and a lot to choose from. Although I had walked past here before, I finally came here on a date for the first time. We ordered a few different items to share including edamame, crispy rice with tuna, urchin, spider roll, miso soup, and shiso peppers. Everything was so delicious! The crispy rice with tuna was probably my favorite. Highly recommended. The spider roll was also nicely prepared and more crispy than I am used to. Looking forward to coming back here again soon for more sushi!

Yelp
A consistent, no frills, high quality sushi spot in SLU. I love getting it for take out, but dining in was a great experience as well. Such high quality fish

Yelp
Rolled in later than our reservation and they were gracious and held our spot as they were filled except for the bar area. Interesting interior and this is their first restaurant outside of LA. Good vibes and glad my friend recommended it. Yellow tail collar was meaty delicious. Miso cod was melt in your mouth, decadent and delicious too. Had the hamachi and hamachi belly sashimi and it was super thin and the flavor was an experience as I went from the collar cooked to the belly Raw. We had great service and the green tea is premium.
google avatar

Kabeer M.

Yelp
The staff was pretty disorganized and very unhelpful/rude to our group. They initially didn't give us a table, but while waiting, a server bumped into us and made us wait on the side. This wasn't communicated to the hosts, who seated another group before us. The food was mostly alright, but quality did not justify the price.

Yelp
Love grabbing takeout here for lunch! The staff is always super friendly and efficient, and the food is usually ready within 15 minutes of ordering. Everything is packaged really nicely too, making it super convenient and quick! I usually get their salmon bento. It comes with a great variety of sides like miso soup, salad, and rice. The salmon is fresh and flavorful, though my only complaint is that it can sometimes be burnt on the skin side -- so it can be a bit of a hit or miss. Def recommend trying it still though!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here because they are dog friendly in the outdoor seating area. They came out with a bowl of water for the doggo without being asked. The service was fast and friendly. We ordered the 5 sashimi from the happy hour for $12. The sashimi was very tender and flavorful. We also ordered the canon salmon hand roll and dragon roll, which I would recommend. The Shrimp tempura roll was pretty bland for $6, it makes sense. The ambiance was nice, but it was also a beautiful day in Seattle. Can't speak too much for the inside.
google avatar

Yelp
I got takeout here so can't comment on the dine in experience. Overall, this spot has some yummy food but at definitely a high price point. I got the spicy tuna crispy rice and baked crab roll since they seemed to be the most popular, and also got the salmon caviar nigiri and yellowtail belly nigiri. All of the fish was so fresh, and this was some really good quality sushi. The baked crab was so delicious and well seasoned and I loved the soy wrapper. The spicy tuna was fresh and crisp all together, and both nigiri were the absolute perfect bite. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a nicer dinner. Great yummy food!

Yelp
We got carry out and got green beans, red dragon roll, 2x California roll, and 2x spicy salmon roll. It was all quite good. The red dragon roll came with a spicy mayo, but the California and spicy salmon did not. I didn't see a way to order it on DoorDash, but I asked for an extra cup at the store they graciously gave me one, thought it was small. Next time I'll ask for 2 extra cups.

Yelp
Came here last week for a last minute lunch date with my husband since I've always wanted to come here for lunch to try their lunch bentos! I'm so happy we finally found the time because it was so good and such a great deal! We both got the lunch bento for $23ish which came with a salad and miso soup to start and then the actual bento box had five pieces of nigiri, two spicy tuna crispy rice, crab rolls, miso cod and edamame! So much food and everything was delicious! We'll definitely be back!

Brad L.

Yelp
I knew Katsu-ya from down home in SoCal, so I expected much better than what our meal was. The sushi was average and my wife's salmon dish was dry.

K W.

Yelp
Staff was lovely Quality of fish was awful :/ Also don't come here if you are gluten free haha - limited options
google avatar

Golda V.

Yelp
After seeing prices go crazy in the last 6 years, this is still one of favorite sushi places for based on the price to quality and portion sizes. I've tried a variety of items and the creamy salmon cut roll is still by far my favorite.

Aster C.

Yelp
Fresh sushi and generous portions! The miso cod and yellowtail collar were excellent. Dinner set with salad, agedashi tofu, miso soup, and rice was a great addition. The 10-piece sushi combo was filling and delicious. Service was great, though street parking can be tough. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great service. Food was good too. Easy to walk to! Hard to find and a little loud inside.

Yelp
How do you spell FABULOUS: K-A-T-S-U-Y-A, that's how! I was recently in the big city for a couple of days, and was craving some sushi for lunch. I found Katsu-Ya on Yelp, and it was only a couple of blocks away. I was worried they'd be busy during the lunch hour, and while the restaurant was pretty full, there was plenty of room for my party-of-one at the sushi bar. I had planned to order a la carte, but when I saw their "Power Lunch" special I just had to try it. I could not BELIEVE the assortment of food in this lunch. It was HUGE and could easily have fed two people. For only $24.80, it was a steal of a deal. (Heck, I paid almost that much for a fast food combo meal a few weeks ago!) The meal started with miso soup and a salad, then the main attraction arrived: a plate full of allll things yummy goodness: six pieces of nigiri (all fresh and delicious), two pieces of corn tempura (yes, corn - have never had it but it was quite wonderful), edamame, a seaweed salad, and a hearty piece of deliciously cooked salmon with fresh steamed veggies. I'm sad to say, as tasty as this meal was, I couldn't even finish it and ended up leaving about half the salmon when I left. Next time, I'll skip breakfast before heading here! The service was super friendly here, and the sushi bar chefs said hi and thank you to every guest. I really liked it. TBH, it kinda made me sad I don't live in the big city anymore!

Yelp
Such a good meal!! We got seated immediately upon arriving on a Saturday evening. The ambiance was nice inside and very clean. We ordered 7 rolls for the four of us: the rainbow cut roll, salmon cut roll, shrimp tempura cut roll, sunset cut roll, fast roll, and two dragon rolls. Every single roll tasted so fresh and tasty. We loved the dragon roll so much that we ordered it again so would highly recommend getting the dragon roll.

Yelp
The food is always delicious and the service is great! We come here every time we are in town and it never failed us with their fresh sashimi and rolls! Yum and yummy!

Yelp
We tried the Katsuya during a Seattle visit, since SoCal Katsuya is our fave japanese restaurant. Food was great. Missed some of the grilled hot food but sushi fresh & delicious.
google avatar

Larissa J.

Yelp
Came here because it was the one of the few restaurants still open for dinner in the area. Our server was very nice, as was the experience. The interior of the restaurant was very clean and modern. The sushi was great and came out quickly. 4 stars only because I would probably opt for other, cheaper sushi places during regular business hours.
google avatar

Philip J.

Yelp
Came in here for a casual Wednesday dinner. Really impressed with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. Cute interior, clean. Lovely desert. Highlight the Hokkaido uni, the crispy rice spicy tuna, and surprisingly the California roll which was fresh and full of flavor. Importantly, the rice texture on the rolls was perfect and the soft-shell crab rocked. I will be back soon.

Yelp
Service by Kin was 4.5 stars. Kin showed interest, was kind and very thoughtful. It felt good to be in Kin's presence. Food was overall 3.5 stars. - Ordered the miso bass lunch set (comes with cucumbers sunomono), veggies, and sauteed bean sprouts, soup, salad, a soft tofu and white rice. The fish was room temp (needed to be piping hot), I asked them to microwave it but the owner fired up a fresh one for me. A really good and tasty value for $16. - Ordered the salmon skin roll. It was kind of soggy. I asked for it to be served crispy. The 2nd time around was much better. I have to say, their customer service is excellent. I would have loved to come back to try other dishes. The place was pretty packed, alot of people like coming here.

Yelp
Saw the stellar reviews on this spot so my husband and I came here for dinner together. We came on a weekday night around 6pm and were able to getting seating without a wait. Shortly after, the restaurant filled up. This place is really cute. Both indoor and outdoor seating and we also really liked that they have a mini elevator inside to make it ADA accessible. The table we were seated at was a little dark, so it was hard to read the menu. We got their sampler box which had the crispy rice, ceviche, crab roll, albacore, and yellowtail. This was pretty good! I would go for this again. The roll we ordered was just ok. It had shrimp tempura and some yellowtail on top and we also got their nabeyaki udon which we definitely would NOT recommend. The broth was flavorless and noodles were overcooked and soggy. Overall, a solid spot. I wouldn't come for authentic sushi here, but they have a nice ambiance to it.
google avatar

Brianna F.

Yelp
This review is for the lunch menu only. The Sushi lunch bento is an incredible deal and you can order ahead for pickup. You get a little bit of everything: cooked fish, edamame, nigiri, crab rolls, and tuna over crispy rice. Plus a salad and miso soup! I highly recommend. I also stopped in for a sit-down lunch with my coworkers one day, and we ordered a bunch of different rolls and sashimi. The food was great at the restaurant too. Will definitely be back for lunch, and maybe dinner one day soon!

Yelp
This place was super! Great food great service great price! Felt warm and wholesome! Services was wonderful friendly informational! Food was delicious! Had a great time! Was a great vibe def go!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here for lunch and dinner and both times were great! Their pressed sushi is delicious but their lunch special for $22 is a steal for the amount of food they give! Can't go wrong with their sashimi, rolls or cooked fish dishes!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice restaurant, good service and good lunch combo . It is worth stopping by for lunch.

Yelp
Oh my goodness.. let me start of by saying if you want fresh sushi.. COME HERE. Now this was my first time in Seattle and I only had sushi once and it was here but it was amazing! Sushi good and fresh flavors! We ordered the Creamy Popcorn Shrimp, the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, the Rainbow Roll, the Avocado Roll and the Salmon Caviar. The creamy popcorn shrimp was delicious! Perfectly fried and creamy. The crispy rice with spicy tuna was so delicious also, had a beautiful crunch on the rice and the spicy crab melted in your mouth! The rainbow roll was super fresh and the avocado roll was so simple and delicate but delicious! The salmon caviar was pretty good with a nice balance of salt but not sure if I would get it again. Over all every thing was so good! The service was also really good! Our serve answered any of our questions and she was on top of refilling my way.. since I drink a lot of water. This place wasn't that expensive either! I would definitely come back here!

Yelp
This is a wonderful sushi spot in the Westlake area in Seattle. The sushi selections are great and flavorful, portions are good. They also have good drink selections in their menu. Dining and seating are decently spaced. Not sure where parking is located.Service is fast and attentive. Price is fairly reasonable. Would recommend if you're in the area.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Super FRESH fish! Very cute ambiance inside with bright lighting. Service was great. Portion sizes are definitely on the small side but everything tasted great. My favorites were the crispy rice w spicy tuna and yellowtail w/ jalepeno. Love the citrus sauce on the sashimi and perfect amount of heat. Good spot for lunch or dinner if you're around SLU!
google avatar

Adam G.

Yelp
Food 10/10 Pretty great! I order the sushi set and the black cod. People call cod the chicken breast of the sea but it is usually super dry, but the dish I had was very tasty and juicy Service 10/10 I came alone and sat by the bar. The waiter came immediately after I sat down and the food came super quick. After I fished, I was able to chill with my drink without being pressured to leave. I come from New York, it is very common to be pressured to leave after the dinner is over Ambiance 10/10 The restaurant is not too big but feels clean and stylish 10/10 would come back and try a different set

Yelp
Food: Good, decent portion for sashimi. No daily special on the board at the bar area is odd. Special is "available", but if you do mot ask, they would not tell you. That is odd when all restaurants would inform you of their special out of the gate. Lots of rolls options and decent sashimi choices. Did not have one of favorites, Kampachi... :(. The staffs do not even know what it is. Service: excellent, fast, efficient, except you need to ask if you prefer low sodium soy sauce. Default is regular. Hence the 4/5 rating. Ambient: Clean, small restaurant but nice! Able to accommodate large group, just need to combine 3-4 tables together like a group sitting next to me, 12 ppl.

Yelp
Chose this spot for sushi because it was the closest one from where I was at that had a great rating and, err, it was a little fancier than I expected it to be lol. I mean, it's not really a formal spot but I was kinda surprised that I was provided a hot moist towelette upon being seated lol. Also pretty gourmet sushi (at least compared to what I'm used to). With that being said, if you like unagi, you *have* to get the sunset roll. Amazingly tender unagi in the center and the cucumber strings that were also inside of the roll had the perfect texture (not too snappy nor soggy). The creamy salmon roll was decent; the salmon was very succulent but the sunset roll just overshadows it (I still recommend this roll though if you want a little side roll of good salmon). Even the soy sauce used here (poured by the server) tasted delicious lol this place definitely makes its own soy sauce concoction. I was also intrigued on the Katsu-ya sake flight since it was on the special menu so I tried it lol. House sake was smooth and fruity. Dry one, was, well, dry (was warned ahead of time). Was leaning towards the taste of vodka (least favorite sake for me but was still fine sake). Premium one was like the house one (fruity smooth) but next-level lol. Very delicious! Super attentive service and the server was friendly. Overall really enjoyed my experience here. ***The restaurant is rather small and I saw some tables were dedicated to confirmed reservations (I went on a Friday night). Would recommend calling for a reservation especially if you have a party of 4+ people.

Yelp
The food was really good. The staff was friendly and very professional. The venue is in a good location.

Yelp
Service is friendly and prompt! Our waitress was super nice and helpful, and very friendly. The lunch sets cannot be beat- I got the sushi bento and it was 5/5 stars! The nigiri was amazing quality and melt in your mouth good. The cod was so good and probably my favorite on the special- all the little pickled sides they give you balance out the fish. The crab hand roll and spicy tuna crispy rice are great too- makes it a bit more filling. Honestly the price cannot be beat and I'd definitely come for lunch over and over again. Delicious!

Yelp
Came here for their sushi and sashimi. This was another chance find for our dinnner. After narrowing it down to Japanese cuisine, we chose this place. This was conveniently within walking distance from our hotel. The restaurant was busy considering the area in general was relatively void of foot traffic. It only took a few minutes to be seated. We ordered from the sushi/sashimi menu and we were not disappointed. Everything was so fresh. We started with tuna sashimi, yellowtail with jalapeno & onion ponzu sauce, baked snow crab with dynamite sauce wrapped in soy paper, sesame tuna tartare & avocado on wonton chip, unagi & hotate (fresh jumbo scallop) nigiri and ended with seared albacore with garlic butter sauce. This last dish was recommended by our server and we were not disappointed. The garlic butter sauce alone was so good, that we tried to soak up every last bit from the platter. The service was attentive and quick and the food was delicious & our server was friendly and provided good recommendations. Japanese dining experience can be hit or miss, but this one was very memorable. The place was jamming with people--almost all the tables were occupied by the time we left despite it being a weeknight. This was an amazing sushi experience and I would not hesitate to return if I am ever in Seattle again. This is worth checking out.

Yelp
In an area filled with chain restaurants, Katsu-ya is a bright spot with excellent service and tasty rolls! The ambiance is nice and bright and clean, while the servers are super friendly and attentive. The food is great - we got the crispy rice rolls, popcorn shrimp rolls, and the Cajun salmon rolls. All of it tasted great, my only gripe is that the portion sizes were small - about five pieces.

Yelp
We came by the restaurant during lunch time finally. Pouring rain outside.. wanted some good food after UW cherry blossom viewing. The area where the restaurant is was pretty nice, felt safe. Plenty of street parking close to the restaurant. PayByPhone is all you need. Ordered lunch combo that comes with grilled cod, sushi, corn karaage (yummy!), salad, miso soup, sunomono and edamame. Such a nice variety of food at $21 or so. Good deal. The quantity not so much, fish quality decent. For me it was just the right amount, no leftover. I wish they kept the vegetable side dish on the menu that was substituted with edamame... that would have made it more authentic. Oh well. As some good Japanese restaurants in Seattle are in a sketchy place where I no longer visit anymore, I hope this place will keep the door open with much more authentic Japanese food.

Yelp
Seattle has a bustling sushi scene! I love that. This restaurant, in my experience, was not better than Japonessa (yes, I am comparing). But, it was still good. A major con for me was the server/staff not being flexible or accommodating to the customer's reasonable preferences or unfortunate allergies. Overall, the food and experience was nothing extravagant. We were walking by and decided to stop in for lunch. No regrets (food was decent and fresh), but I probably would not recommend or go again.
google avatar

Sean Paul H.

Yelp
We braved the transition of walking through downtown to get here for dinner. It was totally worth it.

Kyle G.

Yelp
I've been here many times but first time getting the omakase tonight. OMG probably the best one I've ever had. Perfect amount of food. Not too full, not hungry. Fatty tuna roll, black caviar, perfectly cooked sea bass. Everything was perfect. And best of all the price was amazing at $70
google avatar

Yelp
It was easy to find a seat on a Wednesday night. Katsu ya is pretty popular as it's conveniently located in the heart of SLU. Street parking isn't difficult in the surrounding area. Would not recommend coming here for sushi, there's a lot of better places in the area or in Belltown for better sushi and options. However if you're looking for some traditional Japanese foods like pickles, fish, tempura, bento foods, look no further. Wouldn't call this an izakaya exactly, but definitely has the elements of food you would find in Japan. Price is a bit steep.
google avatar

Krystal L.

Yelp
I loved almost everything I ate here and I'm slowly getting into sashimi! This spot has indoor and outdoor seating and the staff are all super friendly and helpful if you have dietary restrictions. My favorites were the baked crab hand roll, yellowtail and crispy rice. They also make a MEAN miso cod, not fishy at all and smooth like butter. I could eat that everyday with rice. I would skip on the udon and katsu, nothing too special about the two but great if you have a group that has restrictions. Their salmon was also a little over cooked, not too special and same with the yellowtail collar. Their portions aren't massive for what you're paying but the quality of their fish is great so I think it's worth it! I would 1000% come back for the items I called out above.
google avatar

Cyrille B.

Yelp
This place was amazing! The Creamy Shrimp appetizer was very savory, and the shrimp was crunchy but not over battered. We also ordered the Miso Marinated Cod, which is HELLA GOOD - tender, sweet, and flavorful! The Dragon Roll and SLU Rolls are must tries as well, and the Yellowtail is refreshing! Coming back for sure

Yelp
My friends and I came here for dinner on a Thursday night and it was surprisingly busy! Though we didn't have to wait for a table, we got seated at the last seats available at a shared table, so tip - make reservations to get your own table and to avoid a wait! After eating here, I get why this place was busy on a random weeknight! The food here is so good, and reasonably priced! My friends and I tried a variety of nigiri, hand rolls, signature dishes and daily specials and everything we tried was delicious and really fresh! Our guess is that you can't go wrong with whatever you end up trying here, at least for the sushi. We didn't actually try any of the cooked food, but my guess is that it's also delicious! The service here was great too - waiters were all really friendly and attentive. Overall, we were satisfied and surprised by how much we enjoyed our meal here. It's been a while since I've been this impressed with a restaurant - can't wait to go back!
