The Best Long Beach Restaurants, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Most Los Angeles neighborhoods have an unfussy strip mall spot that turns out solid sushi and sashimi. Sushi Kinoya is that for Long Beach: the shop makes satisfying maki rolls (try the aburi hamachi with asparagus, avocado, and seared yellowtail), pristine nigiri, hot and cold appetizers, and wonderfully affordable lunch specials. Inside, find a canvas-like interior that makes it easier to focus on the food. Several tables flank either side of the wall, while the sushi counter at the center is the main event for solo diners." - Mona Holmes

Google
My wife and I frequent many Japanese restaurants and this has become our favorite local spot. The menu is full of authentic and delicious options as well as the common comfort treats. The staff is attentive and kind and I can sense a real care to their House Special Recipes. Today we had the Chirashi and Tekka Don and they were both perfect. We also had the Truffle Hamachi Roll but devoured it before we could take pictures

Google
I appreciate the changes they made to the dining area and the menu. I was craving vegetable tempura and ended up ordering sushi to go along with it, all delicious and fresh. Sushi Kinoya is my neighborhood go-to for Japanese food.

Google
Mellow local sushi with better fish. Their willingness to use fatter cuts of salmon is really all I need to trust. The fatter side of me would hope for more pieces per cut sushi order, but great taste and friendly service more than make up for it!

Google
The specialty rolls I ordered were good. The tap Sapporo beer was actually perfectly poured. The hot sake serving size was very generous. The location is convenient, but the ambience is a little basic. The server we had made me feel a little rushed. Price was slightly off balance compared to the quality.

Google
Today I went to sushi Kinoya because of a recommendation from my math teacher. I tried the Baked Eel Roll, and everything was very fresh, and they put a very good amount of Eel. I give it a 9/10 excellent. The atmosphere was very nice and relaxed, and the servers were very good. I will be taking friends here and I recommend coming and trying this joint out.

Google
i LOVED the food here. one of the best sushi ive ever tasted. the people there are super nice too. definitely would bring a friend next time!

Google
Hands down the best sushi in long beach. Have been here a few times and still making my way through the entire menu but have yet to find anything short of amazing. This is the freshest fish in the area

Google
The moment I walked in I knew I was in for something special. I was not wrong. Best Sushi in LB... hands down. The service was 5 stars as well. Its about quality here. Not about feeding the masses. I will return, oh yes I will return.

Analicia A.

Yelp
Best sushi in LB. I'm a 10yr LB local who loves sushi so I've been to almost every spot. This one's def the best, sushi is super fresh and food is presented beautifully. Service is always great. We got the Stearns roll, hamachi jalapaño & blue fin tuna sushi all amazingggg!!!!

Yelp
Even though I miss the old ownership, I appreciate some of the new menu items that the new owners have brought to Sushi Kinoya. Have you been able to maintain high standards on food quality? The service is still the same great hospitality that it was before slight change in the ambience, but appreciate the friendly Ness and some of the new items that are Korean inspired on the menu..

Yelp
It'll met my friend here for dinner for my early birthday celebration! We ordered black cod, salmon roll, a real blue crab California roll, and a Hamachi sashimi and ponzu sauce. All of it was good except I would skip out on the black miso cod. $30 and it was very unimpressive. The blue crab flavors mashed very well and you can taste the crab flavor in the roll which I really really enjoyed. I would order that again. The waitresses were very prompt and the place is fairly small. Probably about 15 tables total so having a large party would be difficult. $110 w tip

Yelp
Loved our experience at Sushi Kinoya. We came here on a Friday night with the kids for dinner and they were super accommodating and hospitable. They gave our babies coloring sheets and crayons, this place was super kid-friendly. We found parking very easy and found a table right away without a reservation. The inside of the restaurant was very quaint (your typical strip mall sushi place type of feeling). Not too fancy, but not that casual. The food was delicious and maybe our new go-to sushi spot.

Yelp
Is this an end of an era? I've been coming here for so long, it's like family but the chef and Mama-san are gone and a new team is in. That last 3 times my order has been wrong. This last time could've been deadly as I always ask for no crab or shrimp and I got crab in my roll. The spicy tuna was overcooked in my roll and the salmon nigiri was chewy compared to the usual buttery soft. I fear they've been sold to the new owners and it's just not the same. :(
google avatar

Yelp
Nice cute sushi place in Long Beach. We ordered three Chirashis which came on a white plate! Expected chirashi in a bowl! Thinly sliced fish was pretty fresh and tasty. Mango salmon roll was good. Overall it was tasty. Service was attentive.

Wyatt R.

Yelp
Great casual spot with a nice quiet atmosphere! Tons of American style rolls to choose from as well as traditional rolls. The staff was very friendly and attentive

Kim L.

Yelp
They are under new ownership, and the quality has significantly declined. It's actually very disappointing. Also, the prices have doubled!
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
This place is seriously price gouging. I am unsure how they've received such high reviews unless perhaps things have changed recently because of inflation? For a $10.50 cut roll of soft shell crab, we literally got maybe at best 50% portion of any other sushi restaurant. Yes at another restaurant the price of the roll would be slightly more but for 20-30% less price we are getting 50% less food. Our $25.50 chirashi was similarly small and didn't have premium cuts to support the price (no scallop, no amebi, no ikura, non house made tamago, etc). Our friend got hot food (udon) and also felt similarly disappointed with portion size. My husband and I ordered a salmon roll, a soft shell crab cut roll, a chirashi bowl, and a tempura dinner and we were still hungry and had to go elsewhere after. The service seemed short staffed. Our server at one point just asked us to write down our order on a piece of paper and hand it to her. We never got a water refill or tea refill despite having empty cups.

Yelp
First time here. Cozy little spot. Friendly quick service. Came around 1130am. They have lunch specials ! The fish was rather tasty. Got one of the lunch specials came with 5 piece sushi, miso soup and your choice of one of the rolls which I got the calamari roll.

Yelp
It's been almost ten years since my last review, and it deserves an update. First and foremost, the sushi is as good as ever. My son even ranked it higher than our other favorite sushi restaurant in Long Beach, and that's high praise. My tempura bento box was simple yet satisfying. All the items were lovingly prepared, and the tempura was fried to a crispy perfection (without being too greasy). Service was even better than I remembered, and it really feels like a mom and pop operation. The interior seats less than twenty customers, and I think the table arrangement was still stuck in pandemic, social-distancing era, further restricting the dining space. It doesn't take away any of the charm and dining experience though. The price was also outstanding. It's rare to find a sushi joint that costs less than $20 per person. Parking can be a competitive sport in this crowded shopping center, but you can perceive it as pre-meal entertainment.

Yelp
Sushi Kinoya is by far the best sushi restaurant in Long Beach! Their miso soup is perfectly balanced so you taste a variety of flavors with each spoonful. The ambience of the dining areas are so delightful that I prefer dining in vs take out. I usually will meet up with a friend for lunch. The lunch specials are a must as well as the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi. Their fish is fresh and perfectly cut so you get all of the specific flavors of each fish. Service is impeccable. The husband & wife that own the restaurant remember your name, asks about updates from the last time. They work their tails off to maintain the sophisticated yet comfortable 'Cheers' feeling.

Roxie S.

Yelp
This place I a gem for sure. Best sushi I've had by far. Service is great. Cute small restaurant and we will definitely be back. We had 6 rolls and all of them were delicious
google avatar

Yelp
This is going to be our new spot for good Japanese food. We ordered a sushi roll, veggie tempura and miso soup which was all amazingly great and reasonably priced.
google avatar

Yelp
Kitchen normally closes at 7:30, and we got there at 6:30. Even though, there was an empty (and clean) table--not to mention the half-dozen empty bar stools at the sushi counter--they told us that we needed to wait for half an hour if we wanted to stay; which we did. After waiting at the door for a while, the owner said something to her waitress, and she came and asked us to leave. It didn't matter to them a bit that they had said we could wait, or the fact that we have been going there for years. Imagine if you go into a bank and stand in line, and then they come to you after a while and tell you that they can't help you because they want to go home. They may know how to prepare food, but they're really bad at running a business! Good luck if you decide to take a chance there. Food: 3/5 | Service: 1/5 | Atmosphere: 1/5

Esther C.

Yelp
Very friendly server. I ordered a Chirashi bowl; my total was ~$30. The fish was fresh, but the quality of rice was very little. I was satisfied but I wasn't super full. Don't know if I feel like that purchase was super worth it.
google avatar

Denise T.

Yelp
I love this place. I wish I could have taken better pictures but I was too excited to dive in. We order so much food. My favorite was the crispy onion tuna. I'm not sure if that's the correct name. But, honey let me tell you it was divine! The miso soup was full of favor we all order a second round. The seared peppered tuna was crazy delicious. Everything was great. I loved the customer service. The staff was super friendly. I would definitely come back here as one of my top sushi spots. I do wish they had more fresh water fish selections but it won't stop me from coming again.

Yelp
If you love sushi then Sushi Kinoya is your GO TO in LONG BEACH (near CSULB). The service here is quick and the food is fresh and amazing!

Suenita M.

Yelp
This place was awesome it was so delicious the service was so great and they were so welcoming it tasted so authentic it was our first time here and it won't be our last

Khashayar P.

Yelp
Boy! One would think they'll have a little respect for their long-term customers! First they told us to wait, and later they told us that they could not accommodate us, because they were just "busy". Any good business owner would have at least apologized for asking their customers to wait for no reason, and even offered an incentive for them to come back; but not these guys. That means they can't care less. BTW, they charge too much for what they serve. I suggest to the reader to keep looking for a better place.

Yelp
super high rating and very decent review count = verified in my browsing book. 2 visits, i'm calling it a 3.5. Baked Libster & white fish roll $13.50. is a great price point imo bc my usual for most places is the baked lobster rolls which usually average these days around $14-19. And this blend is unique because i've never seen it elsewhere. It's a solid roll, not too heavy tasting, just enough of fish and lobster to vibe. Couple pieces tho tasted fishy like the no longer fresh kinda taste so....eeek. Presentation is beautiful, for convenience tho the spot of garnish in the center would be better spread across. Ginger was crunchy, not overpowering, good cleanse of palate. who reviews the ginger honestly! no, i think ginger should get rated, some places the ginger is so blegh and mush i cry. It's on the south side of the sounternmoststrip in that multi store plaza with aTrader joes and target. Located the corner starbucks and walk down the long side till u run into the artificial garden square. Parking is plentiful cuz it's a giant shared plaza. Service is super nice. Ordering to go is easy. Just mark or fill in the slip and hand over. Go shopping for limited edition haribo party hat bears at five below on the other end while u wait. This'll be my in case of standstill 405 traffic dinner spot, but i wouldn't drive out to get it.

Yelp
Los Altos hand roll. This is all. The best sushi in Long Beach love them and they pretty much know me when I call so I appreciate it.

Hailey O.

Yelp
The best sushi. I have traveled many places and always crave sushi kinoya. Even with the new management it is still delicious.

Stephanie A.

Yelp
everything is so good & recently they opened everything back up & it's so nice! the service is sooooo good & the hamachi truffle is so good i def recommend
google avatar

Jennie L.

Yelp
Unfortunately our last favorite sushi place closed down. We tried several places and by accident we found this hidden gem. The sushi is delicious and the customer service is great .
google avatar

Mahmut E.

Yelp
I visited them for the first time and ordered carry out. It was good service. My food was ready in 10 minutes. I really enjoyed the sushi. I think rice to content ratio was very well balanced. Miso soup was very good too. I will definitely visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
Long Beach / Lakewood sushi has several levels, there's the budget (Awesome Sushi, I Luv Sushi), the mid level to nice (Kihon, Fusion, Kara) the top shelf Michelin worthy (Sushi Nikkei - which is theeeee best). I give Kinoya the award for most authentic. Kinoya and Nikkei are our faves. Kinoya has weird hours, you know why? They're so busy they can. It's a very humble establishment but the food is so good. The salmon hand roll melts in your mouth. My husband loves that their spicy tuna roll comes with a chili oil which makes it stand out. I also notice quite a few Japanese guests when I'm here which to me, signifies their legitimacy. My go to meal is the chirashi bowl or salmon hand roll and Boston roll. Everything is amazing and the atmosphere is quaint and sweet. They're also just the loveliest people. If you want incredible, simple, high grade sushi in a humble environment- go here.

Yelp
First time here! Service was friendly and fast. The sushi was high quality and a very good value. A little hole in the wall that I wouldn't mind visiting more often...especially since I live so close. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I discovered Sushi Kinoya 3 years ago (thanks Yelp!) while I was in the area today I drove over to see if they were still open and to my relief they are! Covid review- they have a couple of tables right in front of the restaurant if you want to grab a bite there but also offer takeout. They have the most adorable little set up to make you feel comfortable and safe. Ex: Miso soup in throw away cups for easy drinking/eating. Hand sanitizer comes out with your utensils (see pic), etc. Not only is their fish VERY fresh but it's also cut well so it melts in your mouth. The service is fantastic from pre-covid days and now. They are so friendly, kind and really make you feel welcome. Today I ordered a sushi lunch special in between running errands and they were fast. Can't beat the quality and price here. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh sushi and a very friendly staff. I feel so welcomed everything I eat here. Great food and service with a smile.

Yelp
First time at Kinoya on Saturday & it certainly won't be out last! We live walking distance from here; not sure how it took us this long to eat here but I am so glad we did. Great service, adorable decor inside and most importantly - FRESH, delicious sushi!
google avatar

Pita L.

Yelp
EXCELLENT SERVICE. The friendliest staff, treat you like family. DELICIOUS food. The fish tasted fresh and the rolls are the perfect bite size. Eat here!!!! Pictured here are only a couple of rolls. I also had the Hot night roll. Spicy tuna roll was also great quality. 10/10 I wish I could have tried them all.
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
It was an interesting experience coming here. We had miso soup in a coffee cup. It was weird to have it presented in that way, but the flavor was surprisingly pretty good. The service was good and the servers were polite, bit just beware about the soup.
google avatar

Pui-See Y.

Yelp
My first time here, but been craving for sushi for a few weeks. Was shopping at Trader Joe's and saw this place around the corner. Small place, but they have outdoor seating. Hospitality is on point and gives a very warm welcome. I was jetlag from a long international trip, so I wasn't paying attention besides what to order. They have a great lunch menu and it was a perfect option for me. The prices were great and if I had a bigger stomach, I would've ordered more! I was immediately served with miso soup right after I ordered, which was nice because something warm felt good. The quality of the sushi was fresh and good. I got the first lunch option which has 5 nigiri and a spicy tuna roll. I thought it wasn't enough food, but it was the perfect amount. I will definitely go back!
google avatar

Teresa M.

Yelp
I am so happy I found this spot! It's really good sushi. Service is exceptional! If you haven't given them a try you must! I promise it will be delicious. I'm not a fan of salmon but theirs is fresh!
google avatar

Randy V.

Yelp
This place was yummy. The service was quick and the staff was extremely friendly. There where 7 in our party and we were seated immediately. The choices were excellent and the food was spectacular. We found nothing we didn't like. My 7 year old granddaughter ate like there was no tomorrow. We had 5 different rolls, several types of sashimi, goyza, edamame and teriyaki chicken. Everything was excellent. We will definitely be back. Even though the place is small, we didn't feel crowded. The out side doesn't look like much, but the place was clean and neat. 5 out of 5 stars

Jenine P.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots for sushi in Long Beach! The servers here are always so attentive, and their fish quality is AMAZING. There's not many places I go to for albacore specifically, but the albacore here is consistently delicious and fresh, alongside all their other fresh fish. So happy to have them nearby for any and all sushi cravings!
google avatar

M L.

Yelp
First time here. We ordered a variety of different sushi rolls and thoroughly enjoyed them all. The sushi was fresh and tasty. The wasabi was soft and fluffy. The ginger slices were perfect. The customer service was excellent. The restaurant is small inside so not many customers can fit at one time. If you have a very large group, you may need to call to check if they can accommodate that. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Raychel R.

Yelp
My first time coming here and the service is AMAZING!! I walked in for lunch and was immediately greeted. My server was really nice and recommended this amazing sushi roll for me to try: Chef's Salmon Special. So so yummy! I also ordered the lunch Teriyaki Chicken bento box as well, which was quite filling. It comes with miso soup, rice, salad, 4 pieces of sushi roll and teriyaki chicken. Really liked this hidden gem. Seriously, if you're not looking for it, you can easily stroll right past it. I will be bringing some friends back to this place for sure!
google avatar

Connor L.

Yelp
This is our favorite little sushi spot in Long Beach, and was my wife's instant choice for her first big sushi meal (takeout but still) after the birth of our son and her abstinence from raw fish for months and months. The staff are always so kind and we're so excited to be eating here again!

Brandy F.

Yelp
Amazing!!! This was probably the best service I've ever received. The host and waiter are so quick and friendly. They had a miso soup served immediately upon finding my seating. Sushi was fresh and delicious. I ordered an avocado cut roll, a salmon cut roll, and a spicy tuna cut roll. Bomb.com. Can't wait for my next visit!

Allie L.

Yelp
Sushi here is beyond delicious, waiters/owner are very nice and the ambiance is perfectly cozy, my favorite sushi spot ever !!
google avatar

Anna-Marie T.

Yelp
My favorite local sushi spot! This is my go-to dinner to treat myself after a long work week. The sushi here is simple, fresh and delicious. My must order items are the yellowtail sashimi, caterpillar roll and the spicy scallop roll. In addition to the good food, the hospitality is on point. I love dining outside and either the chef or hostess always comes out to check the sun position and rearrange the umbrellas to ensure that the sun isn't in my face. Love Sushi Kinoya.

Erika Xiomara R.

Yelp
Literally gasped when I tasted this yellowtail and every piece of fish on the rainbow roll-unbelievably fresh. I wish I had come earlier as they close at 7:30pm! Best sushi & sweetest service I've had since my little Japanese neighborhood I live in in Queens, NY. Soooo recommend :) will be coming back again and again! My fiancé is away on business and I love going solo to sweet authentic spots. Very simple & quaint indoor seating, I loved it for a solo dine in :).
google avatar

Tracey Z.

Yelp
Love their sushi lunch special. Great deal with a specialty roll and 5 pieces of assorted Nigiri. Great quality. Comes with miso soup. All the sushi is really good. Nice owners and staff as well.
google avatar

Bernaddette G.

Yelp
The best sushi in SoCal. I've tried them all but no one has the taste, the freshness , the presentation like sushi Kinoya. Every single item on the menu is outstanding It is a must try. They are amazing.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Perfect to-go-service. We've been coming once a week since COVID. Call in your order and they'll give you an approximate time that's always correct. Service is wonderful. Rolls are always on point. Sashimi is nice and fresh. Great value for the money.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
I love the lunch specials here. It's a go to for my lunch break! The quality of the food is good and everything is well flavored. My favorite dish is the five assorted fish that comes with the lunch specials. Sometimes service can be a little slow but they're so nice here!
google avatar

Brett M.

Yelp
Tried this sushi spot for the first time on Saturday evening. The reviews on yelp were great so why not? Garlic edamame was perfect... love the flavor. The crunchy role and california roll I got were perfect. My wife got the 911 roll and loved it. My daughter got the dragon role and salmon sashimi and really liked it. Service was super nice... very warm and inviting. Definitely recommend.

Lex J.

Yelp
I went with my coworkers to celebrate a promotion. The Korean lady was very sweet. The hand rolls were very good.
