Mexican Sushi, the Cream Cheese and Chicken Wing-Filled Treat, Explained | Eater

"A no-frills truck with white plastic tables where newcomers crowd around to eat comforting, utterly fish-free Sonoran sushi like the Vaquero Roll — packed with steak, chicken, and chiles — typically eaten with a pile of barbecue-slathered boneless wings for a homestyle, homecoming experience." - Bill Esparza

I used to loooove sushi-kito! My go to roll was the Tucson Roll I always get it when I order it, today my excitement of eating my favorite sushi roll was sad. It’s not the same. Not flavorful, too much spicy mayo and last but not least the shrimp. They were burned and dry. I’ve never experienced this with them because every time I ordered it would taste amazing even my boyfriend didn’t want to finish it! I’ve been getting the same roll for a year and a half and it’s always tasted amazing but today it was bad. To say the least I’m disappointed. I paid $25 dollars for the Tucson roll which was a little pricey but I didn’t mind because I thought it was going to be good but no.

I had a great experience. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Maria our server was so kind and efficient. I enjoyed that the restaurant is family oriented and there is an arcade area. I went with my son so it was perfect to keep my two year old occupied. It’s also super cute inside provides a lot of areas for a cute picture. Highly recommend.

Google
Newly remodeled and a new salad bar is amazing 🥰🤩🤩…. Food is amazing and they have so many options for each person preference. Food was great and tasty…. (Hint, hint) the pizza is amazing.

Google
This place is such a great find! I loved the Mounstro Roll, what a treat - chicken, beef, crab, BACON- it was soooo good 👍 Then the Quintana Roll... had octopus and ranch and so much flavor!!! The atmosphere is bright and classy, has that new restaurant smell LOL. Fun little area for games and to keep kids occupied. Really sweet staff. Loved everything about this place ❤️

Google
The food was really good as well as the service everyone was so funny and friendly it was a very beautiful place with a game room . The drinks we got were so good and a very good presentation as well

Google
If you want pure Sushi, this is not your place. If you're looking for a confused concept between Mexican and poorly executed Japanese, this is what you're in for. I hate knocking any restaurant, especially when they try, but this truly disconnected. From the gelatinous rice to the half-thawed "fresh fish." Sad, because the restaurant does have an inviting atmosphere. The menu is extensive, so maybe the non-Sushi items are better executed.

Google
The absolute worst place I have ever been. Horrible service. Got our order wrong twice. 2 hour wait, when there was no one else? Had to take our food away twice to remake it, food came back ice cold. we were starving. Asked for an extra to go container because the food didn't fit, was told it would be added to the bill they can't give more than 2 per table. Just a horrible experience.

Google
The server was unable to understand our requests given limited English spoken. The food was cold when arrived at table. I would not consider this a sushi restaurant if what looking for. The California type rolls were covered in a breading.

Yelp
This place is so unassuming. It sits on a strip mall and just looks like a hole in the wall at first, but when you get closer you realize how beautiful the place is. It I had murals of the ocean life painted and plenty of fun signs and sayings. There even have a stage for small performances. On top of that there is a small arcade which is great for the kids. The menu is overwhelming. Honestly it's a little too much. The pictures of the Mexican sushi are not to scale but in a good way and prices are definitely a good deal as we had 7 people in our party and only needed three rolls. The pictures are small making you think you are getting something tiny but let me assure you it is anything but tiny. My god I've never seen such huge size rolls in my life!!! They also give you several sauces of which none are soy. There was a hoisin, sweet mustard, and on other sweet sauce. No ginger and wasabi on these rolls. Instead you get a cup of sautéed onions. The presentation is beautiful. The ambience is beautiful and the staff are great. However the staff are not fluent in English so it was a little hard to communicate with them but we were able to get by. This place deserves more credit as it feels like a hidden gem. I'll be going back but not ordering more than 1-2 rolls cause they are huge. We got the Tucson roll, Muenstro roll, and one other. Two of the rolls were backed. There were 8-10 pieces for each rolls. The Mueustro roll was stacked high with imitation crab. We had to get take away boxes because it was just too much. So yeah be careful when you order because the pictures make the rolls look tiny. This is a good problem to have.

Yelp
Went here awhile ago and forgot to do a review! It was a Sunday afternoon and pretty empty. We were waited on by a young lady who was friendly and I think the only one present who spoke English (she translated for us when we spoke to other staff), which of course is fine, no issue, we were able to get our needs met. The issue with the server however is that she didn't seem to know the menu.. when we were ordering or when the wrong order came out. She couldn't answer questions, and had to look at the menu when I asked why the order was not right. A part of this is probably due to the fact that the menu is soo extremely large. I usually like this, but Not at the expense of the kitchen and the staff thoroughly knowing it. I was excited to try Sushi-Keri's take on rolls but disappointed when I actually tried some of the unique flavors. I still like the idea of these kind of rolls, I just think the execution for the flavor profiles needs to be perfected.. they were a bit bland. Both mine and my husband. And for him as a sushi lover, he was very disappointed. There's a famous phrase that comes to mind for this restaurant .. "a Jack of all trades is a master of none." It was also pretty pricy, though I will say there are large portions. The presentation of the food was great though and the restaurant was nicely put together as well.

Yelp
CONFUSION. They were not open when they were supposed to be and no one answered the phone. Swung around 15 min later and they were open. No one greeted us at the door and didn't know where to sit. There were flies everywhere. Weird ambiance, small dining area. Over priced and massive menu. No focus. The "torito" was a frozen jalapeño popper. The sushi lacked flavor and had way too much rice. The water is in fact bottled and they don't tell you that. The price charged is not the price reflected on the menu. They bring the bill in a weird treasure chest (?). Overhead music had ads lol. Will not be back.

Yelp
We decided we wanted to try Mexican-Sushi since we had never tried it. The menu is a little overwhelming, there's Mexican sushi, traditional sushi, tacos, burritos and hamburgers. We ended up getting the Sushi-Kito Roll, the Especial Burger, the Burro de Discada, and the Salchipulpo for the kids. The sushi was amazing! We opted for it to be fried and it was way less oily traditional fried rolls. The burger was good too. The burrito was good but a little too salty. There was so much food we couldn't finish anything except for the sushi. When you order water in comes in water bottles. The atmosphere was so cool. The dining area is basically an arcade. Tons of games from Pac-Man to racing games and lots of claw machines. Bring quarters or dollars to make change. Great place for kids! Marvel characters line the walls, including the bathroom.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place out for the first time, unfortunately they sat us down (table for 2) and just forgot about us I guess. Waited for about 10 minutes. Others came in after us & got their drinks and took their order too. Never got asked for our drinks. Place wasn't busy maybe 10 people at most and that might be too much. Didn't bother to stay longer. Left and went somewhere else.

Yelp
Have seen posts all over FB and was excited to try. Located in a sketchy strip mall on the south side. Interior gorgeous but restaurant empty which should have been a red flag since it was lunchtime on a Saturday. Menu is 28 pages; yes, 28 not a typo. Ordered food and drinks (Water was bottled and cost money). Sat for a good 40 minutes with no drinks. Food came out and had to remind waiter about drinks. Food was visually beautiful unfortunately flavor was not. Combo 1 - chicken over cooked and cold (like refrigerator cold, like they removed from refrigerator and put in microwave to heat); noodles cold and sushi was supposed to be beef and got shrimp and it was bad, like really bad. Sandwich slaw inside spicy even after I told the waiter nothing spicy; cream cream was probably 1/4" thick. Literally, 3 bites and we were done. No boxes for us, not good but beautiful restaurant.

Yelp
The sushi is made by an automated sushi machine, thus the texture of the rice and the odd shape of the rolls. And the service is just HORRIBLE, i dont mind paying a premium price for good handcrafted sushi, but machine sushi and rude ass employees doesnt warrant the prices

Yelp
Sushi-Kito is such an interesting Mexican sushi place, and one of the few we have in Tucson. Most of the rolls have the same "base" of shrimp+cream cheese+cucumber but with different toppings. Being a huge mango fan, I really liked the tajin mango roll. Similarly, the tuna mango was tasty too it's like having tuna ceviche on top of the roll. They may seem a little pricey but for the amount of food that you get it just seems fair. If you're looking for rolls with different fish inside, this is not the place. If you're looking for rolls that have seaweed, this is also not the place for you. However, if you want to try something new-ish and creative, and you want to feed your curiosity on what Mexican sushi is then def check out Sushi-Kito. It's in the Southside so knowing to say simple phrases in Spanish while ordering helps.

Yelp
As a place that has and arcade I expected it to be kid friendly which is wasn't for smaller kids such as toddlers. We didn't get offered high chairs. The tables at all high tops. Service was not the best the waitress is rude and seemed bother to do her job. The food was expensive and honestly not great. We ordered a roll and I told the lady it was too spicy and we couldn't eat it and she disregarded my comment and said "it says it's spicy in the menu" in Spanish which it doesn't. The coin machine didn't work and they kept telling the customers to use it. The arcade machines eat the coins. The soft drinks were $5 which I thought was outrageous. Safe to say I will not be returning.

Yelp
Great food! Locally crafted wit an international flavor that cannot be beat. I have visited on multiple occasions and recommended them to everyone!

Yelp
Very overpriced for alright tasting sushi, the sweet and sour pasta tastes horrible the chicken fettuccine is good but nowhere near as good as Olive Garden so save your money for Olive Garden since they're the same price smh the place is small but cute from the inside
google avatar

Carolina L.

Yelp
when I first started going there it was amazing! I would rate it 5 stars. price was also on point. but now it's 2. I always order the inspiración roll. after the third time they stopped adding surimi on top and now the inside of the roll is only cream cheese and three big pieces of cucumber. way different from the first time I ordered. this wouldn't be too bad if they didn't change the price every single time I went. at first I didn't mind paying $5-$8 more because it was good sushi until it went from $25 to $40. that's too much for sushi that falls apart and taste only of cream cheese. the two stars are for the nice lady who takes the orders.
google avatar

Diego L.

Yelp
Second time coming here and second time messing up my order. Explicitly asked for no seaweed in my sushi and messed up my order both times. Both time waitress said it was my fault I didn't ask for no seaweed.Doesn't help that I waited 45 minutes to receive a wrong order. Won't be coming here again and wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Princess D.

Yelp
Best sushi in Tucson! Agua chile sushi is my favorite on the menu. And you can call in your order and pick it up
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
I ate lunch here today. Four of us shared two sushi rolls, a burro and three tacos. The good news is that the prices are reasonable and the pork burro and tacos were good. I wasn't impressed with the Mexican sushi; Japanese is better. Every roll contains avocado and cream cheese. Also, the menu is laughably badly translated into English. And confusingly, there were two items named Green Roll with different descriptions.

Bob J.

Yelp
The rolls are absolutely garbage and ridiculously overpriced. Not a very diverse sushi selection, all rolls only come with shrimp. The rolls would be decent if it wasn't for the 2 inch wall of rice on the roll. Very flavorless sushi and not worth the price. I walked out of this place feeling like I got robbed.

Kevin I.

Yelp
Horrible service went Saturday was told my order will be ready in 30 min went 30 min later and they told me it's gonna be 15 more min which I didn't mind went back 15 min later and they told me another 15 min so I left empty handed decided to give them another chance called the next day told me a 45 min went 50 min just to make sure got there and told me another 25 min and still managed to mess up my order

Yelp
Thank goodness for ample signage. I was driving down the road when I saw "sushi" on the banner. Now, this is the southside. Those of us who live down this way are highly accustomed to having ample access to tacos and chimis and burritos and tostadas and the famous Sonoran hotdog. Ugh, just how many molcajetes do you need in one week? The day we find an Indian, Caribbean, East African or *good* Vietnamese food spot on this side of town -- I will purposefully eat out every single day of the week...for a month! OK, no. No, I won't. But I will likely eat out more often. So, seeing the Sushi-Kito sign made me make a haphazard U-turn in 10 seconds flat. I'm glad I stopped in. The proprietor tells me that this food truck is brand new. Apparently, they only been in business this month. And it looks like they will stay in this location for who knows how long. That's cool, especially since we only have one decent sushi restaurant on the southside - that would be Sushi Lounge just up the road. Kito specializes in a fusion - it is northern Mexican style food meets Japanese street food. At least that's my best guess. They even have yakimeshi -- a Japanese style fried rice. For my first order, I went with the Kito specialty burger. I do not know why it's called a burger when it is, quite frankly, a glorified California roll top with all sorts of delicious flavor accompaniments. Seriously, for eight bucks I had a meal for two. And it was pretty good. It's the type of food that excites the overly curious palette. I found that eating my single dish, the flavors kept changing. It was like a buffet in a single sushi roll. It was spicy, it was soft and smooth, it was crunchy and sweet. Night even tasted something that reminded me of fried mozzarella. And this humongous roll, stacked skyhigh with shrimp and other glorious goodness, came with a shaving of carrots and a side of a nice, fresh crab salad. Absolutely perfect for the summer months! The only downside is that I could tell where that the tent in menu are in bright red and so the menu was very difficult to read. Also, the rice was a bit bland. It's certainly not sushi rice. It seems like it's your standard long grain rice. But, not bad for first visit. I'll be giving them another go and highly recommend that you do so as well.

Kyara F.

Yelp
Food was alright not good enough for the price. I think it's too pricey for the serving and it's a lot of rice for the roll I think they add more rice and veggies to make the rolls look bigger. Like I had 4 or 5 sticks of cucumbers in each roll. Which seems excessive. The server seemed annoyed anytime she would come to us. We walk in and the store was a mess didn't have anywhere to sit since all the tables were dirty and she finally came to us saw everything was dirty and started to clean the tables but didn't sit us down just excepted us to know when she was done. She came 20 min later to take our order and had a face the whole time. When we were waiting for almost an hour for our food I asked if we could take it to go instead and she mad a face like it was a huge insult. Still ended waiting another 40 min for 2 rolls, teriyaki noodles and chicken fingers. When I went to pay they didn't even know the prices of the items the lady was asking around to other coworkers if they knew the price for an item I ordered and she had to pull each item price off the menu. To recap we walked in and the entire store was dirty and no where to sit, we had 2 kids with us and weren't offered a high chair I had to look myself around the whole store, then it took a while to seat us then 20 minutes to order then an hour for our food and 10 minutes to pay. The food was not good enough for the price. Won't be returning. Too bad I had high hopes after seeing the remodel and new advertisement on social media.

Yelp
Spot was in decent driving range after work and to be honest the price here is ridiculous! $16 for one philly roll! They cut too thin the rolls are falling apart, no jasmine or wasabi to come with roll. Was dissatisfied with this one. I love sushi but could not understand what they got cause all the menus are in Spanish. Save your money and hit up the East of town for you can get some rolls for $10 and they make in front of you.

Adriana R.

Yelp
Horrible service and I was just there for a doordash. Was told it would be ready in five minutes ended up waiting 30 and left empty handed. People that ordered about 5-10 minutes after we got there had got their food before we did
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Walking in it was a VERY laid back and a little different. Was very skeptical but ordered wings, the imperio roll and delidephia roll. The rolls are extremely filling but really good. I had asked about the mango wings if they were spicy, he said no... but they were spicy. The service was friendly and fast.

Perla B.

Yelp
Don't eat here. I ordered an Eel roll and it did not have eel, just the eel sauce- $10 for the roll. Rice was over cooked and veggies were huge. You can't see them prepare the sushi either. I legit wish I could erase this place from my tastebud memory.

Jd E.

Yelp
Super disappointed I got the norteño(more expensive roll) and sushi Kito. They put everything on top like a stack of nachos and inside the roll was just cut up cucumber which definitely isn't worth 15 dollars. I was also given a different price on the phone then what I actually had to pay. And then after everything else I was told 35 minutes and ended up waiting another 40 sitting outside the store and the food was already cold. Should have just went to Sushi Lito.

Yaneth V.

Yelp
I love their Mexican sushi! But is just the worst service!!!!! They always give me the wrong order, the wait is terrible. Today I called a and place an order and they told me that in 10minutes was going to be ready for pick up, I arrive 50min later and they told me that didn't had my order ready because it wasn't call in ... after telling the lady I did call for a couple times and to look around she found the piece of paper where she wrote the order! I always go through some dilemma with them! Never going back!

Claudia R.

Yelp
Worst service from the server/ waiter, really needs to be more polite to customers. Rudeness upon ordering and picking up will make our favorite spot be our least favorite.

Chelsea C.

Yelp
SO delicious! The rolls are huge and really flavorful. Great, friendly service. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Interesting rolls. Didn't really enjoyed the sea land and sky (lacked flavor, a bit dry) but did enjoyed the sushi kito roll, pretty flavorful!
google avatar

Jeanette D.

Yelp
This place sucks very unprofessional one time they charged my card 3 times and the person on charge was very rude. The lady working as cashier did not know anything. Our order took forever to arrive. Worst experience ever! Don't waste your money.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch. I had the culichi roll and my friend had the ramada roll. Both were outstanding. He could not finish his roll, but I was easily able to finish mine. I would not describe this place as Chinese but a fusion of Mexican and Japanese food. Called Sonoran sishi.. Recommended for a very nice lunch.
google avatar

Yesenia L.

Yelp
the food is extremely good. but there's this one particular lady that is so rude. i asked her a simple question and she was rude about it. she sits 20 ft a way from the door. which makes it hard to communicate with her. when i picked up my food. there was another lady and she was the sweetest person. then to top it off i waited an hour for my food.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
This was probably one of the worst sushi's I've tasted ever let's just start there. The service was really bad it was the first time going there so I didn't know the menu, and I would ask the person to explain to me exactly what it contained or how it was I mean ever sushi is different and he just had this horrible look on his face, he was obviously not happy to be there. Service and Food we're both bad sorry but wouldn't come back ever.

Martin V.

Yelp
The food is decent but the service from the lady in the front is horrible, I've called on 2 different occasions and have had the phone answered then hung up without a word. Horrible customer service. Deverian de correr a la vieja que se encgarga de recibir a la gente.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
Highly recommend the sushi Lito roll breaded this place is amaaaaaazing. Never disappointed
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I tried the new place on 12th Ave, what a great experience. I had the Evil Kani roll with a siracha mayo and soy, wife had a Terriaki Chicken Taco salad. Tasty, great flavor and price was very good. Will return soon!
google avatar

Priscilla T.

Yelp
Overall 6/10. Meat and chicken is too dry. Rice is too gooey in the sushi. The guy who runs it is nice enough and kudos for starting a business, but was not my cup of tea

Isa I.

Yelp
What a big waste of money all the rolls are overpriced , super laid back restaurant looks like they don't even care and the food is horrible never been to a restaurant like this go to other real Japanese restaurants around the southside and avoid this one and have some real sushi

Claudia H.

Yelp
Worst experience ever. It's fight MMA fight night and we wanted to have sushi for dinner while watching the fight. I had to call like 4 times just to put my order because they don't pick up, and usually I don't mind because my order is correct. The lady who took my order said they would be ready in 1 hr. I had ordered 4 rolls so it was nothing outrageous. Arrived 10 minutes before and the lady said it would be like 10 min more. She then told my husband it was $20. My husband was like no we had 4 Rolls. She said she had but accidentally switched our name to a different order. We waited and additional 40+min after that . When she finally called us to pay she would not take my money because she kept saying it was fake money because I was paying with a $100 bill. I was already really upset because I had been waiting so I said something to her and she didn't care, I ended up going to the smoke shop next door and they checked my bill confirmed it was real and gave me 5 $20 bills. I requested to speak to a supervisor or to have the # for the owner and she refused. She told me I can call the store to speak to him. I told her that when I call they don't answer and I usually have to call multiple time and if I can please have a direct #. She still refused so we just took our food and came home. I had to come back and return my food because one of the rolls was wrong. two of my plates had the rolls all over the place like they just threw them in which I would not have mind if my order was correct. She then insinuated that I was the one who messed up the plates when you can clearly see they had not been touched and that she had given me an incorrect roll. At this point I was exhausted dealing with her and requested request my money back. This by far has been the worst experience ever and I will not be back.

Yelp
Customer service was very good. The staff was very nice and prompt. Food tasted old, bland, and lame. I had the pollo, fish, and Asada roll. The best part was the faux crab salad. Chipotle mayo was also good. I like the unique Mexican Sushi concept but it did not delight the tastebuds.

Jessy G.

Yelp
Best Mexican Sushi in Tucson! I always go here even though it is 20 minutes from my house because of how amazing the sushi is and how nice the staff is. I like to eat the sky, earth and sea roll and it is hands down my favorite. They are improving in their speed which is good because a few months ago it would take about 30-40 minutes for my food and yesterday it only took like 10-15 minutes. The food here will not disappoint!

Robert T.

Yelp
Tried the charola with 2 sushikiyo rolls empanizados and 2 boneless orders and it was great just like the ones from nogales mexico
google avatar

Lydia D.

Yelp
food is not that good at all, rolls are all rice and cucumber. very big. all you eat is rice. service was no good as well. the server admitted to not knowing anything. didn't even know the menu. very slow. overall wouldn't go back if you paid me.

Anastasia P.

Yelp
Horrible customer service, sushi is just ok. They give you a price then they change it up on you when you are picking it up. I ordered a "especialidades" sushi platter over the phone and when I went to pick it up they said only 2 can be specialty sushi's and the other two have to be regular ones even tho on the menu it says it's 4 specialty rolls. They didn't give me a call back or anything and they waited until I showed up to tell me. If it wasn't because I had people over I would have just left. I had to sit there for an additional 40mins waiting on the platter. Did I mention they never even apologized? They made it look like it was all my fault. I even pointed to the menu and asked for clarification if I was mistaken. To which the girl at the register just couldn't justify it. This isn't the first incident I've had with their customer service. They always look like you are just an annoyance to them. I rather spend my money somewhere were customer service is a priority and not just wanting to take your money.

Santa L.

Yelp
Great food!!! I really recommend this place. I had the Sushi-Lito and it was delicious!
