Sushi Ko Review - Bird Road - Miami - The Infatuation

"Sushi Ko is a really good, casual Japanese spot on Bird Road. They offer a lot of sushi options, but you should definitely get some of their cooked dishes on the table too. Any karaage dish is going to be tasty, as well as any fish collar option. Come here next time you want an easy, relatively affordable Japanese meal with some huge Sapporos served in buckets of ice." - Ryan Pfeffer

Google
THIS IS THE BEST SUSHI / SASHIMI PLACE IN ALL OF MIAMI, If you guys like fresh fish and affordable prices, this is the place to go! I personally am a lover of sushi and this is by far the best authentic Japanese sushi you can find in Miami !!! Definitely gotta check it out!

Google
This must be a mistake. But I am home already. I cannot drive back to amend this. How is this a serving size of pork belly for your ramen !?!? With no egg as well.

George Diaz

Google
Service was pretty decent. But when I asked for soy sauce, they told me they had none, even though there was a bottle of it sitting on the bar, so I had to point that out to them. Seafood soup had way too much soy sauce. It needs to be improved. Sushi was pretty decent and tasted fresh and the sushi chef was very pleasant. Overall, it's a decent restaurant with good service, and the food is somewhat above average, and the prices are very good

Google
Great Customer Service and the food is amazing. The best Sushi Rolls are Mr.305, Ceviche Roll, Miami Heat, Cali Aji, Los, Rainbow, Roll 69 those are some of the best, dont forget to try Tuna Tataki, oh and the soups are great. Just give it a try and let me know what you think about this place.

Google
We found a new favorite sushi place! Hiromi is amazing. So friendly and knowledgeable with a great smile. Sashimi and the 305 roll were excellent. They even served my 22 oz ichiban in a bucket with ice and frosted glass!

Google
Love this place, it is slowly becoming one of my go to favorites. Service is always great, the kitchen and the servers are very accommodating. The sake collection is rather interesting. With a wide variety that would satisfy anyone’s palette!

Google
Had an amazing dinner at Sushi Ko. Our server Hiromi was super sweet she had so much positive energy! The food was delicious too! I got the 3 combo dinner and it came with a good amount of food for the price! The salmon and pork katsu were my fave!

Google
This place has been here forever and I hope it stays. Come here for some really good authentic Japanese food! Today I tried their katsu don and it was superb and quite filling, what a large serving!

Yelp
Excellent service with delicious sashimi and sushi rolls, especially anything with tuna. It's a cozy restaurant with a subdued atmosphere, soft lighting and mellow tones. Overall, it's a very pleasant place with delicious food, efficient service and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Still my favorite sushi spot! They will accommodate custom orders and the fish is super fresh. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Came in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon after the lunch rush and restaurant was literally empty. What a great feeling. The service was friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. Nice japanese beer and wine selection.

Yelp
This place is a 10/10 every time, regardless if it's lunch or dinner, weekday or weekend. The food is fantastic, so flavorful and fresh. The staff is so sweet and accommodating, Hiromi is the sweetest and super funny. This a place is so quaint and friendly.

Yelp
First time at this local spot and I loved it! The bento lunch special is unbeatable for $17. The fish tasted fresh and you could taste the natural flavors. Staff was attentive and very friendly. We were in and out within 40 minutes. It is the perfect spot for a casual meal.

Yelp
This place has completely won me over with their delectable sushi creations. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for a delightful dining experience. The menu offers an impressive variety of sushi options, from classic favorites like California rolls to innovative and unique rolls that will surprise your taste buds in the best way possible. The fish is always fresh, and each roll is beautifully presented - you can tell that the chefs put a lot of care into their craft. *don't forget to order the crab ragoons - made in-house, they are the best thing in the appetizer menu!*

Nick K.

Yelp
Definitely over priced. Service was okay and so was the food. Would not eat there again. I order chicken teriyaki expecting it to be an adequate dinner , especially for $23 dollars and it looked like a kids meal. The sushi was okay but nothing out of the ordinary, especially for the price. Very average place , not worth the price.

Yelp
I came here with a party of 6 at about 1 PM on a Sunday. We chose this restaurant because the dim sum restaurant in the same strip mall that we had originally planned on going to was absolutely packed, and we didn't have time to wait to be seated. When we entered, it was relatively empty - only 2 other parties were dining in the restaurant. We didn't initially see anyone to seat us, but then someone came from the back, and another man came from the left side of the restaurant and told us where to sit. The first thing I should mention about this restaurant is that service was phenomenal. We were attended to by a man and a woman. The man embodied all of the qualities that are hospitality in my definition. He was friendly, warm, attentive, and knowledgeable. I think he must have been an owner or manager. Speed of service was perfect, maybe even more than perfect considering the size of our party. The man attending to us brought us 6 fried gyozas on the house. They were good. I ordered the chicken katsu dinner (as did my boyfriend), which comes with rice, salad with ginger dressing, and miso soup for $21. I felt that the price was very reasonable and I left quite full. The portions were generous. The soup was good, the salad was good, and the chicken katsu was pretty good. Someone in my party got a salad with tofu in it and she felt like it didn't have enough tofu. The man attending to our table (well, the entire restaurant) offered to box the rest of my food up for me, which was another reason I felt how hospitable he was. I tend to see that as something they only do for you at nice restaurants. The restaurant was clean, including the bathrooms. The area of the restaurant we sat in felt a bit dim, but I wasn't really bothered by it. Overall, it was a surprisingly good experience. I wasn't blown away by the food, but I was certainly satisfied. It was solid. I couldn't think of anything in terms of the food or service to possibly complain about. When we left, the restaurant was getting busy. I hope they stay busy, because they deserve it!

Yelp
This restaurant is clean and staff is very friendly. Sushi itself was just okay. Not a lot of rolls and nigiri selections are few. Prices are very decent.

Yelp
Sushi Ko has been a solid sushi joint for many years with many loyal followers. This past Saturday we decided to have dinner there and thankfully it has not lost its touch. The interior of the restaurant has been updated with a cool area for lounging and the traditional sushi bar in the middle. We decided to order our usual favorites such as California Roll with masago, rainbow roll, tuna (Teka) roll, and a plate full of various nigiri (sliced fish on top of rice). All the sushi were very fresh and came to our table quickly. Both the owner and the waitress were very friendly and welcoming. For dessert we ordered the brownie tempura with ice cream, amazing an excellent way to end dinner. In Miami everyone has there "to go sushi restaurant" I think we going to join the Sushi Ko wagon.

Yelp
Good people and good service. I come Here often when I want no hassle sushi dinners that hit the spot. Sometimes you'll find very good toro here and the uzukuri can be delightful.

Yelp
Stopped here for a little bit of a sushi snack after already having dinner. Tried some sushi I haven't tried before and I enjoyed myself. The restaurant has a nice vibe to it with a sushi bar. The only thing that stood out to me was the service, idk if I was reading the room wrong but seemed like they didn't like that I only ordered 6 pieces of sushi for the table. The sushi chef made a comment to the server that I overheard. Despite that I tried not to pay too much attention to it in case I interpreted incorrectly.

Yelp
Yesterday evening, I went here with a group of 10 good friends after swimming at the incredible Venetian pool in the afternoon. Our reservation was for 5:30 pm and we were able to be seated at 5:00 pm, which is great! The first thing I did before I decided what to order was look at the fish counter to see if the fish was freshly prepared and how it was stored. I took two pictures of the sushi counter that will be uploaded here. I decided to Facebook message my father his advice but he didn't respond in time. So I decided to order dishes that did not have fish or shellfish in them to stay safe. I ordered steamed gyoza , agadashi tofu appetizer, and tonkatsudonbae for dinner. My tonkatsudonbae came with miso soup . The gyoza was juicy and decadent. The miso soup was perfectly flavored and had the right amount of soy flavor. The agadashi tofu tasted soft and melts in your mouth incredibly- soft silken tofu slightly fried with light brown sauce that tasted excellent with the the tonkatsu dipped in it also. The tonkatsudonbae came with black and red flakes over a bowl of rice. The pork was a bit dry to be honest - I had to dip it in a sauce. The rice was cooked very soft which I was fine with. The portion of the tonkatsudonbae was huge and without the appetizers is enough for dinner alone. The service was excellent. The waiter was very sweet and complimented my shirt which was a demon slayer anime shirt. Overall this is a very good Japanese American diaspora restaurant.

Yelp
Tucked in a strip mall with other dining options. Stumbled upon this spot on a Monday evening in our route home. The ambiance is your traditional zen like vibes, nice lanterns, dim lighting. Nice ambiance and waitress was very accommodating and patient with all our questions and modifications to our order. The only thing is that's it's Cold inside so bring a jacket. The tuna tataki is seared so slightly cooked, it was delicious. Seaweed salad was typical and on the small side. The ceviche roll made the home run for me! Lots of fresh fish topped on the roll with hits of citrus and ponzu sauce. I'm a fan! We will come back soon and the prices and pretty standard.

Yelp
6/21/24 I was charge $12.00 for eeal hand roll what ? not so good prices are very bad

Yelp
Just ordered take out and came home to find this delicious what seems like a pube in my fox roll. Never again. Worst $100 I've spent on sushi. Ruined the whole experience. Inspect your food fellow patrons. Attached a pic. And by the way in case you're wondering, my bald headed husband picked it up. So it wasn't mine. Sticking to my one and only never let me down place on sunset & 102. If you know..you know.

Yelp
Sushi KO dinner - servers were very busy, trying hard to keep up but the wait was reasonable and the Food was good, we got the Chicken Katsu and the Yaki Soba with shrimp. COVID measures are being taken and there is hand sanitizer on each table, which is awesome!

Yelp
Went looking for the Sushi Ko I discovered back in 1997 or 1998. What a disappointment.!! Food quality poor Food presentation not appealing at all.!!
google avatar

Jamie W.

Yelp
O. M. G. We waited over an hour for our food. A bowl of seaweed salad took 30 minutes. Just saying. Nope.

Yelp
So I've been coming to sushi ko for as long as I can remember. I can definitely say I'm a regular. Everything here is amazing but some of my personal favorites are the following: Wakame Salad House Ginger Salad Vegetable Soup Mr 305 Roll Los Roll OMG Roll and the list goes on...
google avatar

Barby A.

Yelp
I've been coming here for almost 20 years. Quality has dropped a bit. Portions are smaller, prices are higher. But it's still comfort food for me. Still a regular.

Yelp
I can't believe I had never been to Sushi Ko in the 26 years I've lived in Miami! My experience with the service was smooth; I sat at the sushi bar with my boyfriend and we were attended very quickly, I believe we went on a weekday so it wasn't too busy. The food we ordered was fresh and delicious, if you're looking for an awesome, low-key sushi place, I strongly recommend Sushi Ko!

Jose V.

Yelp
Supermarket sushi is more generous. We were charged $15 for a Dragon Roll that looked like a Youth Fair Portion in some elementary school lunch. Yes!!!! That poor. We left and drove down the road to Bankok, so disappointed. Look at dates and time on receipt and Bankok menu screen swipe. We left Ko at 6:30pm and our now at Bankok, 7:02pm. The value of some things today are completely wrong. Read the Yelp reviews from the long timers, this place turned shabby. Will never go back.
google avatar

Janine O.

Yelp
This place has taken an unbelievable nosedive. It used to be pretty, with nice ambiance; now it looks like a s**thole. They're also charging an arm and a leg for sushi now, despite the fact that when I recently went, the sushi fish was old because the delivery person hadn't come in a week so there was barely anything left. $6 for a pair of salmon nigiri. $12 for one single piece of uni. Etc. I ate 4 individual pieces of nigiri (nothing expensive, just the cheap stuff), so did my partner, and that's all we ate... just a snack, no drinks or anything else... the total price tag was almost 30 freaking dollars before tip. The sad thing is my favorite authentic sushiya (NU Sushi in Broward) burned down months ago, and something tells me it was on purpose because they were having trouble paying the bills because of covid shutdown. Sushi Ko used to be my favorite sushiya many years ago until they started getting greedy, made their prices higher, their portions smaller, and their quality lower. I wish NU Sushi was still open and Sushi Ko was the one who decided to burn themselves down. Protip: Price-gouging your customers during a pandemic when everyone is suffering financially is a quick way to get a completely empty restaurant. It is stupid practice that shows a basic ignorance of the principles of microeconomics.

Yelp
Sushiko holds a special place in my heart and tummy, since I worked here years ago. It's changed owners and staff with maybe two older chefs that still work here. I must say the food is still delicious! You can't go wrong with the white fish karage special, uzuzurki and the Kiki special roll! I could name a few other things like the hamachi Kama, the stir fry's and the selection of sake is nice too!!
google avatar

Raquel P.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised at the restaurant renovations inside. Our server Sandy was very nice and helpful. We ordered the combination dinner of sushi, sashimi and tempura and it was delicious and very generously served. The miso soup was very tasty and the salad with ample ginger dressing. The crab Rangoon was also delicious. Sapporo beer and good to go !

Yelp
Disgusting food all around. Used to be a good place and it is horrible. Last time I give it a chance. This chicken doesn't even look like chicks.
google avatar

Jessy B.

Yelp
One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. The sushi at Publix is gold compared to this. Extremely extremely****** overpriced. The rolls average between $12-$25 which is a slap to the face considering how terrible the quality is. There's so many other wonderful, top tier sushi spots in the same range that are fantastic compared to this. I can't even say it was remotely ok. This makes other "bad" sushi spots look like paradise.
google avatar

Viviem R.

Yelp
This place used to be good. Since the change of ownership I can justify going back again. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, and it was basically store bought pork stock, angel hair pasta, a hard boiled egg, and the pork belly was not pork belly it was 5 pieces of "steak." Nothing about the ramen was correct. When I changed my order to the dragon roll the rolls are considerably smaller than they were before and the eel sauce was watered down and spicy Mayo was equally subpar. I'm really disappointed with the low quality of the food and how they've raised prices exponentially. I wish they had spent more money on the quality of the food and less on the remodeled space.

Dania N.

Yelp
I've been a Sushi Ko supporter since 2001, however, after my last visit months back I can no longer support the place. They raised the prices an astonishing 40% and reduced the portions 50%. In their dreams this would work, but in reality it doesn't. We were hit with $18-$20 rolls which were $10-$11 before, since we unfortunately went straight to order as usual and didn't need to read the menu, where the new super high prices were noted. I ordered the Big Mac roll and one literally couldn't find the tuna on the roll. When I shared my feedback with the Sushi Bar Chef (I believe he is now part owner) he started talking about the higher inventory costs and how it was either having these crazy new prices or closing the doors of the restaurant. I understand the predicament, however, I don't believe that their solution to that problem was reasonable. You don't offer an extremely poor product at an extremely high price to keep the doors open. Said practice will actually ensure that the doors will close soon, hence the empty place. Business 101... Read the book...

Yelp
A place with good service and food is always a win. This Miami staple for sushi provided both - in fact, I still think about our waitress and how nice she is! Definitely coming back.
google avatar

Janelle G.

Yelp
The service was amazing. Our waitress was really nice. She did a good job with our party of 10. We were recommended the threesome roll and honestly it was really good. The quality of the rolls and prices are excellent. Ill definitely come again on a date with my honey.
google avatar

Lissette G.

Yelp
We tried it again and it was a bad experience! The salad dressing which i used to buy to take home is water and no tasty! The entire meal a disappointment. This will be my farewell to this place! This was one of our favorite and most authentic Japanese restaurant. It was sold and now food is not as good. My soup was way salty. Everything we ordered tasted different. Even the tempura ice cream was tasteless! I hope they improve for their own good.
google avatar

Eva P.

Yelp
Been coming here for 15 + years and it never disappoints. Had the fried gyoza, kiko special, and 55 roll.
google avatar

Farrell G.

Yelp
Nice decor but the sushi just doesn't deliver. It tastes like something that came from target or Publix and not a professional sushi place. On top of that the prices were high even for these inflation crazy times. On top of THAT most of the items had silly names that made selecting what we wanted very difficult. Simple sushi rolls were given bizarre names that tried too hard to sound funny and trendy and made it harder to find suitable items to order. Try another place.
google avatar

Schwert D.

Yelp
I lived in Japan for many years. While nothing compares to the sushi in Japan, Sushi Ko is a close second. Bad reviewers simple have no clue what good sushi tastes like. If plastic Publix tickles your fancy, that's fine. Hey some people's idea of fine wine is a can of Four Loko. Just don't bring your plastic box of Publix sushi and can of Four Loko into my favorite Japanese Izakaya, and say the food is bad, it shows no class.
google avatar

Harold C.

Yelp
Working on trying the whole non-shrimp side of the menu (allergic). So far I've had the Big Mac, Raw Deal, and the Kiko roll. All delicious. The Big Mac has been my favorite. Very flavorful. Great place for sushi

Robert M.

Yelp
While we were visiting Miami we paid a visit to one of my old favourites. We hadn't been to Sushi Ko in nearly a decade. Although it had change ownership the vibe hadn't changed. I did miss that they didn't serve natto or tuna yamakake anymore however the sashimi was amazing. The owner, Yuki was very accommodating as were the staff. We were lucky enough to sample a fresh delivery of otoro (the wagu of tuna), and my personal favorite uni. What a fantastic lunch we had paired with a large bottle of cold Kirin Ichiban beer. Sushi Ko, exceeded our expectations and we hope we are lucky enough to visit again sooner than later.

JAMES N.

Yelp
This place has gone down hill, it use to be great now it's mediocre at best. The place smells like old dirty dog, the rolls are mushy and don't taste fresh, the baby little crab avocado salad is $9??? It comes in a bowl that looks like it's for a toddler. The rolls are over priced, this place probably won't last much longer.
google avatar

Carol V.

Yelp
Pleasantly satisfied with my meal. And very satisfied with the service. We ordered the 69 roll, the screaming orgasm, the Arizona and for the last roll we were allowed to custom order to our liking. I will admit I've been to better places but one thing I appreciate from restaurants are the service and this is why I see myself returning here. Good food, great service and great company. What more can you ask for? =)
google avatar

Zhen C.

Yelp
TLDR - I hate talking badly about a restaurant, but there's room for improvement here I was craving a sushi/sashimi dinner when I came in, but decided not to when I sat at the bar in front of the display. The salmon had some weird stuff over it (not part of the salmon, just kinda looked like stuff from something else left on top of it), and the tuna wasn't the best of colors. But no worries, I went with the chicken katsu. Just some breaded chicken cutlet and some rice on the side, a standard salad to start. Without being too critical, the chicken didn't taste the best, and the salad bowl was half filled with water, presumably from the lettuce I guess. I didn't want to cause a fuss and return anything, especially cuz the main entree wasn't necessarily bad. What I really was bothered by though was the chef kept wiping his bare hands on his shirt and then making sushi. I know not all Japanese restaurants make the chefs wear plastic gloves and traditionally, they don't, but the combination of sweat wiping and the unappealing display was a bad look.

Christina I.

Yelp
I love sushi ko, the service is always good and fast. The food is always delicious! The place inside is cute and you can sit and watch the sushi chefs make it fresh!
google avatar

Diego M.

Yelp
This place is great! Yup he staff is always on point, the sushi is fresh and the prices are competitive. When me or the wifey want to stay home and eat sushi, a quick call and pick up here and our night is SET!
google avatar

Nelson D.

Yelp
Delicious, we ordered the Cali Aji Roll, Big Mac Dragon, and the Mr. 305. All very good. 2 recommended by the attentive waitress definitely going back again.
google avatar

Mayra R.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer of Sushi Ko for 24 years. They always have great service, decent prices, and excellent quality. I don't know why I've never posted a review for them but if you truly love Japanese food, this is a must try. Always a 5 stars in my book.
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
Hands down the best sushi in Miami! Very intimate setting. Impeccable Service, Outstanding food, and great atmosphere! The 69 roll and 5on5 is highly recommended! Family friendly.
google avatar

Giorgio V.

Yelp
Amazing service and amazing food! Our server Ashley went above and beyond and made our experience the most amazing I've had till now.
google avatar

Claudia S.

Yelp
Will never come back here. I Ordered a roll that was supposed to have asparagus in it. When it was served without it, I asked why it didn't have asparagus and the waitress said, "we're out of it". Well, she should have told us before she served it instead of trying to sneak it by without us noticing. The sushi dish was very plain, no side garnishes of carrots or oranges. Had to ask for refill of water Next time I want nice a Japanese meal I'll Go elsewhere!
google avatar

Ivan H.

Yelp
For really fresh sushi, I highly recommend this place. Their toro at $7.50, sushi or sashimi, isn't bad at all. Their sweet shrimp is also very good, but their friend shrimp heads are the best I've tasted this side is the Mississippi River. It's excellent! Their Katsu Curry was just ok. Had a strange flavor that I wasn't accustomed to in Japanese restaurants, to the effect of maybe some type of vinegar in the sauce. I would def not order this again here not saying it's bad, just not to my personal liking. They've got some creative rolls, 40 plus, so you can lose yourself in all those different combinations. Overall a very relaxing chill place that isn't pretentious with a no frills decor from 30 years ago.
