Sushi Ko Review - Bird Road - Miami - The Infatuation

"Sushi Ko is a really good, casual Japanese spot on Bird Road. They offer a lot of sushi options, but you should definitely get some of their cooked dishes on the table too. Any karaage dish is going to be tasty, as well as any fish collar option. Come here next time you want an easy, relatively affordable Japanese meal with some huge Sapporos served in buckets of ice." - Ryan Pfeffer

If above 5 star can be left, it would. Owners James and Jasmine have “knocked it out of the park” with their new location. Food, exceptional, service, superb, and ambience incredible…. By far the best and freshest sushi in all of Long Island, if not the entire regional area… Not sure where to start with the food as it is all incredible. Sashimi and sushi rolls a must. Fan favorites for us are the Passion roll, Maralyn Mon-roll, and the surf and turf roll… Kumumato oysters are exceptional, and Salmon, Tuna, and Toro Sashimi are the freshest around.. Tuna/Salmon crudo appetizers are a must… Dragonfruit Mojito and Machata Martini are definitely worth trying along with their fine selection of Sake… Reservations are a must… Cannot say enough about this exceptional restaurant… Love, caring, and experienced skill in each and every plate served…

Best time of my life. Me and my friends went to celebrate my birthday, I couldn't have experienced better. Staff was very respectful, and food was absolutely delicious. Miso has a nice light touch to it, a contrast to other restaurants who either go too heavy or watery. Thanks for having us <3

Merrick’s New Hidden Gem! Sushi Ko just opened in Merrick, and it’s already one of my favorite sushi spots. The restaurant is beautiful, modern, and spotless — you can tell they care about every detail. The fish is incredibly fresh and high quality, and every dish is prepared with real attention and skill. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, making the whole dining experience even better. You can really taste the difference in the freshness and quality of the sushi here. If you’re looking for top-notch sushi in a clean, comfortable setting with great service, Sushi Ko is absolutely worth visiting. Merrick definitely needed a place like this! 🍣👏

Google
If Sushi Ko means this sushi is a "knock out" then that's what it means to me. Yep a sushi restaurant that will knock out any other place around! That's right, James (owner) prepares each piece to perfection...slicing, trimming, marinating, spicing, presenting a masterpiece that is so smooth like butter and paired mixing the temperature of the fish with the rice nicely just making a deliciousb experience every time! You'll want to compare everywhere else to Sushi Ko, and after one visit it will become clear Sushi Ko knocks out the competition. This is a family owned business. They are passionate about what they do. It becomes clear as you see how the interact with each other and provide a pleasant caring attitude with their patrons!

Google
Just got takeout at their new restaurant on merrick ave, the owner and all the staff are very friendly and inviting. Exactly what a front of the house should be! Their food was some of the best sushi i've had, extremely fresh, and tasty. The vibe of the restaurant was very chic. Highly recommend!!!

Westley C.

Google
Great Atmosphere, Amazing Sushi, Overall just an amazing place to go! Front row seat to a kind, cool chef making sushi. Tastes fresh and premium. I highly recommend coming for dinner or lunch, and having the Omakase A.

Google
Freshest and best tasting Michelin quality sushi in Nassau County. Jasmine and James provide only top quality food. Love their new restaurant’s location with its NYC interior vibe.

Google
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! The freshest fish, incredibly creative dishes, wonderful staff and the owners who are a husband and wife team are the sweetest people. This neighborhood Gem promises an unforgettable experience. BEST SUSHI ON LONG ISLAND Thank you Sushi KO! Scott C.

Yelp
Just finished a meal at our local go-to sushi place. All of the sushi is consistently fresh and nicely presented. I usually get Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail Scallion sushi/rolls and Peanut Avocado rolls. Hubby loves the Seared Pepper Tuna and Spicy Salmon rolls. Tonight I leisurely enjoyed my meal with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Service is impeccable - always! The owners and staff provide an enthusiastic greeting every time we enter the restaurant and throughout the meal. Note, lunch specials here are especially a great deal. We often order to-go and are never disappointed, whether eating in or taking out. It is also a favorite of many in the area. Will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
Outstanding! Fresh sushi and one of the top sushi spots in Merrick/Bellmore area. Overall ambiance has limitations and dates but service top notch with creative, flavorful and fresh sushi rolls. Will definitely visit again as this has become gold standard for sushi in this area.

Yelp
My favorite dish here is Grilled Cod. $31 for two pieces is really good deal. Their fish is very fresh. The only thing I wanna complain is the store opening hour. Hope they can open longer.
google avatar

Gail A.

Yelp
Enjoyed an as-expected dinner with friends. Nothing bad, nothing exceptional, and not inexpensive either. Food was very slow to arrive, but it was a busy Fri night. Fish was tasty and fresh, we may be back.
google avatar

Denny J.

Yelp
The sushi is fresh and ok. The rolls are a bit small. Only place I've seen a mackerel sushi roll. The prices are a bit high and I really feel there are better sushi places locally. I'm not in a rush to go back.
google avatar

Cutie P.

Yelp
Good is good but I took a star off because your portions are too darn small. I order the salmon over black rice and bok choy and it was barely enough to fill a cavity. Really? For $16 you could at least fill a person's stomach. Outrageous.

Yelp
Bite size review: Sushi Ko has been the most consistent, fresh and all around best sushi spot in the area for years. Other places have come and gone, but Ko has remained. Restaurant is a shoe box, but cozy and clean. Staff ranges from friendly to aloof, but service is always fine. Sushi pizza, yellow tail and all Naruto rolls are my favorites. Last time I was there, king salmon was offered as a special. Woo, so good, it certainly did taste like it was meant for royalty. Take out takes a while but everything is packed with care. Go to the Ko!
google avatar

Breanna Q.

Yelp
Dined in this time. They had a special with a nice piece of Wagyu and Toro -- my favorite. The other fish I got didn't taste as fresh as last time... It was OK. We also got some chicken pineapple fried rice (but they forgot the chicken). The truffle salmon was good. Regardless, this is more of a takeout place -- so I don't blame my dining experience for not being as impressive as the takeout.

Yelp
I've been coming To Sushi Ko for years. James the owner is the man ! He will make you anything you like. Live all the signature rolls. Cooked food here is also excellent. I have recommended this sushi Ko to many friends , they all love it.
google avatar

Tonya B.

Yelp
Sushi was excellent. It was very fresh, and our server was excellent. We went during the lunch hour and had the three roll lunch special. I also ordered a specialty roll. Restaurant is a bit snug in terms of spacing, and there was only one other couple in the restaurant at the time, however they were preparing a ton of to go orders, and many people were coming in for pick up. Restaurant was clean, restroom was clean and there was ample parking along the street and a parking lot that extends behind the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great, owners are so friendly. Food was great, bill wasn't traumatizing. It's my new spot for sushi. I had torched Waygu beef as well (no picture), amazing!

Nan D.

Yelp
I ordered different sushi with avocado and spicy tuba with avocado. The miso soup didn't taste like miso soup. The rice was the worst white rice I ever had. How can one mess up white rice? All the rolls were garbage . Worst sushi I've ever had.

Alexandra D.

Yelp
This review is for takeout. Ordered few rolls plus a noodle - I would rate 4 stars but minus 1 due to long waiting and services. Was told regular waiting time should be 20 mins over the phone but was asked to pick up in 30 minutes because it was very busy. 30 minutes has gone by - food was not ready. The waitress was NOT apologetic and took it for granted asked for 10-15 more minutes. She also said she was totally okay if I wanted to cancel the order. Definitely will order from other Japanese restaurants. Lots of other better options available in the same neighborhood.

Megan H.

Yelp
This is by far the best sushi in the area. I have been here three times and each time it only gets better. I highly recommend any of the sashimi. So fresh and flavorful. The service is pretty fast and the employees are friendly. I can't wait to go back for more.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place. It's extremely overpriced (I paid 8/roll for shrimp tempura that was literally just shrimp tempura, nori and rice. No lettuce, no cucumber, no sauce) and not good. The shrimp tempura roll was greasy and fishy. Unfortunately it was a miss for us. I also called the place to complain and they declined to rectify the situation.
google avatar

Nora M.

Yelp
A wonderful sushi bar. The website could use some work and the delivery times are slow. Like everyone else, some days are better than others. Right now it looks like forty five minutes until dinner. I take it back. It wasn't that long at all.
google avatar

Frank T.

Yelp
Super appreciative to be dining out, outside. The food tasted better dining with my bride! Everything served on disposable-ware. Yay! Sushi Ko is open for delivery, and Eric P. from the restaurant delivers - nice local guy. Sushi was INCREDIBLE! Very inventive items and all was available. Also excited that a local restaurant is open and our family is thrilled to support them during these times. More thrilled to stuff my face with their delicious fresh sushi. Look at these photos! Everything was incredible
google avatar

Corey M.

Yelp
Freshest sushi in town. Some of the best salmon I have ever had. The staff is incredibly nice. If there is any criticism, it would be that too many people know about it so it's much busier than I would like. Orders take much longer than some places but it is well worth the wait and I love seeing local restaurants doing so well. Sit at the sushi bar and watch them work their magic The above part was written before COVID-19. Now the quality is still the same. The staff, if possible, is even nicer. Curbside pickup was right on time. Food was FANTASTIC!!! Our absolute favorite sushi restaurant around.
google avatar

Yelp
UHM YES YES & YES!! Deliciousness. Let's start off with the fact that this sushi place serves crispy rice. Automatic win. I mean, I still don't understand why this isn't a standard everywhere! It's to die for. The appetizers all sounded so good that my friend & I just decided to try a few different ones and skip out on the rolls (but I'll be back for sure!). The spicy tuna taco was SO GOOD! I don't know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't an actual taco shell. It's genius though! The perfect crunch for that mouth watering spicy tuna. And thennnn there was the spicy tuna gyoza. My only complaint is that they weren't bigger, but each one was a baby bite of heaven!! Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Ofelia E.

Yelp
Sushi was good and tasted fresh. I got a california roll, sweet potato roll, and spicy tuna roll. We also got the deep fried dumplings with guacamole as an appetizer, it tasted okay, it wasn't anything great. As a heads up, everything is served in disposable plates and cups, even if you are dining in.
google avatar

Ruthy M.

Yelp
They do have an amazing selection of sushi rolls, I'm just not sure I can attest to the quality and freshness of their sushi. I ordered 15 minutes before closing so I did mention that I would come back and dine in. I ordered the super spicy tuna and there was nothing spicy about it. This place has potential because of their creative rolls so I'll give it another chance another day.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
This restaurant has a warm and homey feel to it. The service was great and the staff was attentive. We ordered two Sapporos which were nice and cols. For an appetizer we got two avocado salads which were just amazing. The avocado was perfectly ripe and the ginger dressing was insanely good! For our entree we ordered a spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, Merrick special roll (Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, seaweed salad roll topped with avocado eel sauce and wasabi tobiko) and a Spicy Yellow Dragon special roll (Spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, crabstick, cucumber, avocado in soy paper topped with spicy crunchy fish flakes). This meal was so delicious. We will definitely be coming back. New favorite sushi spot in the area.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
This is my sister and my local go to for sushi when we don't want to travel all the way to Kotobuki in Hauppague. Most times we order take out, but from occasion, we dine here with friends. My favorite appetizers there are the crispy roasted duck and the ocean blossom. The ocean blossom is served resting on a bed of black forbidden rice in a savory sauce. The ocean blossom itself is various cuts of fish that it plated on top of shredded daikon and topped with masago in a crunchy rice paper bowl. They also have lots of inventive specialty rolls that have classic and adventurous combinations. My favorites are crispy duck roll and volcano roll. They're fish is very fresh and the servers are great in service. It is a short 10 minute walk or 3 minute drive from the Merrick train station. There is both street parking and a parking lot to the left of the building to leave your car.

Yelp
Was craving a legitimate omakase quality sushi experience and got just that at Sushi Ko, an extremely unassuming sushi restaurant in Merrick. The fish quality was right on point. It was ALL so fresh!! The best fish of the night was the blue fin o-toro with a wasabi concoction on top. The portions are also generous without being too big. Other stand outs of the night were the mejina (large scale black fish), sweet shrimp, scallop and ikura served on a shiso leaf 'taco'. James, the owner is very knowledgable on sake and sushi because he's a connoisseur himself. It was such a great dining experience! We will definitely be back, and make sure James is there to make/oversee the sushi that elevates this place above your typical sushi fare of spicy tuna and shrimp tempura roils.
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
Hello, my name is Jessica and I'm a sushi snob. I've come here twice so far and I've had good experiences thus far. The service is very good and fast, it is a smaller restaurant but both times I was here I was able to sit right away and noticed lotssssss of takeout orders which is good bc you know the sushi is fresher. The spicy tuna gyoza appetizer is DELICIOUS. Probably one of the best I've ever had. The vegetable roll is actually really freakin good as well if you're looking for something without fish. The special rolls are smaller and not as fancy as some of the other Japanese places in the area, the rolls were a bit less impressive and not as tightly rolled, but my friend loved the crispy rice roll and my fiancée and I loved the FIRE ROLL. They def have some competition in the area but I would be willing to go back.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
I'm going to start off by saying I really came here because of what they advertise to be "bringing omakase to Long Island". I have extremely high standards for omakase, my favorites are def sushi noz & shuko so it might not be a fair comparison. I am extremely disappointed with the quality of fish, rice & fish ratio and the whole environment. The quality was not good at all and I drove 20 mins to check it out. I feel sick after eating it and I will not be returning for sure. Please don't expect anything from this place. It's just your local Chinese owned sushi stop.
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
Sushi Ko is your typical Long Island sushi joint. I came here for a casual Sunday dinner and at 6pm they were empty, by 7 they were starting to fill up. We felt very rushed when we were seated. Mind you, the place was completely empty. Take a chill pill people! Quit trying to turn tables when there aren't even customers yet. Anyway, we had shumai as our appetizer and each got a few rolls for our entrees. I had the banana roll with black rice and a spicy salmon naruto roll. Both were fresh but the banana roll looked a bit sloppy. Still good though. They have a great selection of special rolls and they have so many alternative options like brown rice, black rice, and naruto for all you health freaks out there. Also, we didn't drink but they have a pretty large drink menu.

Fran B.

Yelp
Excellent every time - staff is personable and the owner Jasmine makes you feel at home

Ron G.

Yelp
So, Sushi Ko has become our go-to Japanese restaurant in the area. In both take-out and dining in, we have enjoyed all that Sushi Ko makes for us. We recommend them.
google avatar

Chrissy B.

Yelp
I was in the mood for some sushi and this place wasn't too far from me. They seat you pretty quickly and get started on the drinks which I liked. The menu was a bit overwhelming for me becausw I had no idea what I really wanted and the sushi options were pretty diverse. I started off with the calamari and it was really good. It comes with this dipping sauce that really added flavor to it. I also got the Passion roll (I think that's what it's called) and it comes with mango in it. I'm usually not full on just sushi alone but I could barley finish it; it was really good. If I'm in the area I'll definitely come back here and try something else.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and the food never changes. The fish and everything that I tried on the menu is always fresh. Best sushi restaurant in Merrick ! The customer service is always on point , everyone is super friendly including the owners. Ps. I recommend the phoenix roll with a side of spicy mayo and soy sauce , amazing, carb free and light. You're welcome !
google avatar

Eddie N.

Yelp
Horrible horrible service. Food is decent nothing special. Very poor management skills. Sad because this place has potential!
google avatar

Fred K.

Yelp
There's not many times I can give 5 full stars but Sushi Ko deserves it. 2nd time eating here and like the first WOW!!!! Love at every single bite. This place is the absolutely BEST sushi special rolls since we lost Koban. And I have to say if Koban was still around I probably would have to ditch them too! Great job the best in town!!!!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Food was good, would definitely stop back if I'm ever in the area again an feel like getting sushi

Zachary F.

Yelp
I am very disappointed in the food I received via delivery today. I had ordered a noodle entree with beef which we were charged extra for and after moving all of the noodles around (which were soggy and had a funky texture to them) to find the beef we counted 4 tiny slices of beef in the entire entree. These slices were smaller than individual pieces of edamame. I was shocked as I've had these same noodles before when sitting in the restaurant and it was loaded with beef and the noddles tasted normal. Anyway I decide to call the restaurant and the gentleman on the phone asked for the order number and then spoke with his cook and came back to me on the phone to tell me I was wrong and that his cook put in many pieces of beef. I looked around the noodles again and find that there were only 3 TOTAL PIECES OF BEEF FOR A $15 Noodle entree. The fourth one from the first look around was actually a piece of mushroom! And to be clear I wasn't looking for a refund or a credit. I simply wanted to let them know what had happened, I never expected them to send more beef. I just wanted to hear "hey so sorry this happened to you, it won't happen again" but instead we were called liars. It's safe to say I won't be returning back here P.S another annoyance was every sushi roll breaking the second they're touched. The wrap keeping them together was dry and oddly warm. This was the least of our problems. The fish was appetizing and appeared to be of an acceptable quality.
google avatar

Jessenia S.

Yelp
My family and I have been visiting this place for years. The sushi is extremely fresh. They have wonderful happy hour specials and the best hospitality. The owner is pleasant and always stops by the tables to check in which is a nice personable experience. They are extremely clean. We Continue to visit and support this local business.

Yelp
Bonnie G. and I wanted to have an intimate NYE Celebration without the typical hoopla.... After much deliberation we decided to spend NYE with dinner at our favorite Sushi establishment Sushiko. We so enjoyed past meals there, especially the First Omikase Festival thrown by Sushi Chef and owner James and his wife and partner Jasmine. We made a rezzy for the Sushi Bar to be with James so we could enjoy seeing the fish and prep as well as kibbutz thru the meal. James was at his Best! he suggested a couple of bottles of hand chosen Sake to accompany our meal..The first was Tengumai 50...very mild but delish...the second was a dry sake Senju...we enjoyed the crisp dryness of the sake and it complimented the incredible fish that was to come. We had a 9 pm rezzy and were famished on arrival. After settling in I ordered Hamach Kama cooked lightly...Was the best.. super fresh and melts in your mouth delish! From there it was Sashami all the way except for 2 rolls BG ordered; Tiger Roll and Uptown Roll..Both were exceptional with nice size chunks of fish not the typical puree in most rolls! We feasted on Belly Sake (salmon) which was like butter...shiny, oily and melts in your mouth! Along with it we had Belly Hamachi (Yellowtail)...white in color showing all belly meat and also oily, tasty and wow!! James showed us a photo of a very recently acquired huge chunk of Tuna Belly...Blue Fin O'toro at its finest. We had to try it and at $10/slice well worth the culinary experience. It was scored and lightly touched with a blow torch to bring out the oils in the fish...Equal to the best of the best!!! was so good later in the meal we ordered another round just to have that same experience with sight, taste, consistency and quality!!! In between the big fishes we had were the best Amaebi (sweet shrimp) we have had in a long time and it came with Tempura heads...also a treat! I tried an imported mackeral which was smooth, lite and not at all strong like regular mackeral...Even BG enjoyed it! Bon had Ikura Sashami on cucumber which highlighted the crunch of the eggs and had a clean taste...I always finish an outstanding Sushi Meal with my dessert...Uni with a Quail Egg!! to me its the epitome of combined textures and tastes both of which compliment each other! We had an outstanding NYE Dinner and spent the time in a comfortable warm atmosphere with the nicest and most helpful people....A great time was had and a Happy New Year to One and ALL!

Richard S.

Yelp
The freshest sushi I've eaten. The staff is great. Always remember me and my wife. Highly recommend

Anthony G.

Yelp
Very disappointing Japanese restaurant in Merrick. They have a good selection of sushi but none of what I ordered was any good. The yellow tail and scallion roll was awful. The fish wasn't fresh. The tuna roll was kind of blah because the sushi rice didn't have any vinegar in it to give it that bite. The salmon nigiri was okay. Again, no vinegar in the sushi rice and the proportion of rice to fish was way off. Worst was the fresh water eel. A tiny piece of burned eel on top of a tiny dollop of rice. Service was courteous and prices are okay but the quality of the sushi was just poor. Not going to come back and not recommended.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Always fresh! Always innovative the fried rice with spicy tuna app - Truffle White tuna app- the black rice rolls - everything is always so delicious! We travel from Massapequa to Merrick .. Consistently always good the fish is always fresh! Must try !!
google avatar

Lesley O.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this restaurant with my best friend the other night. I rarely get miso soup because it normally has an aftertaste that is far from appealing to me but when my my best friend ordered it & I tasted it...wow! I ordered one & thoroughly enjoyed it! We also ordered steamed edamame with no salt, a seaweed salad, & a few rolls. Since I am desperately trying to eat healthy I opted for the spicy tuna roll with brown rice & shrimp with avocado & brown rice. I must admit I missed my spicy mayonnaise but I have my eye on the prize right now!! The rolls were great & I'm really starting to enjoy healthier options like brown rice! The restaurant is nicely decorated & very clean & the waitstaff very attentive. I highly recommend this place but just be aware that it is in a small strip of stores on Merrick Road so if you blink you may pass it!!

Edward D.

Yelp
Been coming to Sushi Ko for some time now for lunch special. I usually get the three roll lunch combo that includes miso soup and a salad. It's definitely enough food for me and you get a great deal. The Salmon, Tuna, and Yellow tail have all been very fresh. Staff are also very friendly and have been practicing safe precautions due to Covid.

Yelp
I was looking for another Sushi place aside from Arata on the island and came across this place in Yelp. We made a reservation and went with friends on Saturday night. We had a number of appetizers, rolls and pieces of sushi- Arctic char , two types of eel, yellowtail belly, and others that were outstanding. We couldn't understand why this restaurant isn't busier and more well known. We wanted to keep this find to ourselves but felt like others should know- go try it
google avatar

Fred A.

Yelp
Sushi Ko is a rare find among Long Island sushi restaurants, offering top quality seafood, apparently sourced from the best suppliers. Preparation and presentation at the sushi bar: impeccable. The sushi looked too good to eat. But staring at it for more than a few seconds was not an option. The standouts are too numerous to mention, but include seared otoro, house-cured ocean trout, and amberjack. They even prepare their own monkfish liver (sublime)! You can call to see what's special that day. Hint: if it's Japanese uni, why are you still at home?
google avatar

Rocco C.

Yelp
Ordered the pineapple fried rice with chicken and was very surprised to have it arrive in a pint container for $12? Pineapple was from a can so can't justify the price at all. Was it good? Yes but that's plain ridiculous for the price.

Lisa C.

Yelp
I used to be a regular here before the name changed a few years ago. I went 2 times. Both times the service was horrible. We got shown to a table, then nothing for 30 minutes before we walked away. Sorry but if you want me to visit your restaurant you need acknowledge me and take my order after you seat me.

Howard L.

Yelp
Great take out from Sushi Ko. We phoned in the order and was told to pick it up in 35 minutes. Sure enough the order was waiting when we arrived. Tuna, salmon, and eel - all delicious and fresh. We ordered a large saki, which came in a pint soup container. Much more than the standard Large size. I was glad to see the business was bustling.
google avatar

DJ Marla J.

Yelp
food was great, made quickly. My only suggestion is they separate the food for two people when it's obviously for two people instead of putting it all in one container. I'm referring to a sushi order, otherwise it was great
google avatar

Yelp
Curbside pickup is fast, safe and convenient. Bonus is the sushi is top notch and tasty too.
