"A true Japan transplant, this restaurant specializes in pub-style food, so that is what you should order here. Think takoyaki, agedashi tofu, yakitori, sushi, and ice cold Japanese beer. The eclectic style and friendly staff make it comfortable for you to linger and snack and drink and repeat...." - Factory North

Do you love sushi? Want to go on an adventure and not leave your seat, come to Sushi Maru and order everything off the special nigiri sushi menu. Its a whirlwind of flavors and textures. Its fun to see whats new. Some items are seasonal so you'll only see them once a year. It will not disappoint. The fish is fresh, service is attentive and I've never seen Suhi Maru not busy. Every time I come home to visit, I do not miss a trip to Sushi Maru.

Google
To be more specific i give it a 4.7. Very friendly staff and fairly straightforward methodology. You can sit at a table and order off a menu. Or sit at the sushi bar and take as you please off the conveyer belt. You can also still order off the menu or even talk directly to the sushi chefs and ask for anything really in terms of sushi. Fish was very fresh and cut right in front of you. And there is more than just sushi on the belt; mussels, tempura etc. Plates are color coded belt depending on the price. MY reason for not giving it 5 stars was that’s the belt method while fun, comes in very small portions. The randomness associated also made me think on the fly about deciding, note, the plates are not labeled so you go purely off visuals. Essentially, you have to give up your cravings and settle for what is passing in front of you. That, combined with the small portions left me feeling unsatisfied, despite the fact that I was full. Also caution on the belt, your price will rack up quick, far quicker than if you were to just commit to something on the menu. That’s why I specifically didn’t give it 5 stars. But I know a lot of you are more used to this style of Japanese restaurant so it might just be a full five stars for you!

I’ve been coming here for years and I can’t say I’ve ever left here unsatisfied. The sushi here is top notch and their other dishes are amazing. I think I’ve probably had just about everything on the menu here and can’t ever get tired of it. I wouldn’t say I’m a regular at many places but I am definitely a regular here! The service is always very friendly and a lot of the time they give a little scoop of ice cream at the end of the meal. I’ve tried a lot of Japanese places in the South Bay Area and I always find myself coming back here because of the quality, the taste, and the service.

Google
Such a cute little sushi place!! We're visiting San jose for a week from NJ. Found this place on Google maps. We waited for the place to open at 530pm. There were already a line of people waiting as well. They have plates of sushi on a conveyor belt. Each plate has a different set of pricing. You can order whatever you want as well. The fish melts in your mouth!! They give you free orange sorbet. The staff was very nice and friendly. I would definitely come back when I'm in the area. Quality sushi is hard to find.

Google
Good affordable Japanese food. Ordered the 2 choice bento meal. Good clean food at a good price. Was full at the end of the meal. No complaints. Would go back again.

Google
I LOVED this place. Not only were we seated right away, but the older gentleman took such good care of us. We were from out of town and decided to try the revolving sushi only to discover they also had other options. Katsu and curry were nice and spicy and savory. My sona with dipping sauce was delicious! And every piece of sushi was delicious. Definitely come here for the atmosphere and the food!

Google
Enjoyed a delicious sushi meal here! The quality was excellent, and the prices were very reasonable. The service was friendly and attentive.

Google
Fresh sushi, especially enjoyed the specialty rolls. Always enjoy sitting at the bar to see up close the available variety of offerings. Service is fantastic. Our local go to place for sushi and other Japanese cuisine.

Yelp
Been coming a long time, usually after 8pm to get the double for one dishes. Their sushi is really good albeit small and they don't do the stamp cards anymore to my knowledge. The owner and chefs are really nice though and I appreciate that it is out of the way from the Main Street of JapanTown for some quiet. Tables and interior are a bit old fashioned but meshes well with the sushi vibe.

Yelp
Changed ownership a year or three ago so not the same feeling of pride of ownership as before for years. Food just OK but not special. Service is pleasant. But doesn't feel as ethnically true as before.

Yelp
Was here eating with friends for Fanime, since they wanted to eat at a sushi place. One of my friends recommended me, so we went to try it out. We got there around 600, so it was quite packed when we were there. After about 30 min, we sat down. We sat in one of the booths next to the rotating conveyor belt, so we had access to the plates on there. They have different prices based on the color of the plate. I had a few myself, but my review will focus on the entree. Potato Curry Croquette: This was pretty good. A fair amount of rice and curry sauce paired with Two Potato Croquettes. The curry was delicious and hearty. It tasted what i expected of Japanese curry. And the two potato croquettes were crispy and filling. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. My server was very nice and helpful. I can see myself coming back here again.

Yelp
Came in on a busy Sunday for the first time. We found the food (curry katsu, three item bento, kids meal) to be a great value. I'm sure we'll be back to sit at the rotating sushi station. Thanks Team Sushi Maru!
google avatar

Yelp
The concept of conveyor belt sushi is always enticing to me. I would google search for it whenever I'm in a new area and am craving sushi. Sushi Maru popped up on my search and I'm glad I found it! The sushi looked pretty good and there were a couple of seared nigiri's that I thoroughly enjoyed. Plates are color code with a respective price. By the time it was near closing, they actually started combining 2 plates of different colors onto one plate of a higher tier in pricing. Smart! I would've picked those if those came out sooner. Next time!

Yelp
I was surprised how affordable and delicious my bento was. I was shocked that my bento was only 20 dollars but dollar extra because I added sashimi. The service was quick and fast. The ambiance was really clean and structured. I can't wait to go back for another meal.

Yelp
Friday night lay in from Phoenix and Portland and the wife wanted sushi and she had been here before. The area has been renovated and parking can be a challenging but we were a bit late. Found parking but a short 7' walk. Wasn't too long wait, 15' or so. Place was hopping! Had my to go Chirashi, raw oysters, rainbow roll all were excellent. Fish was free and tasty and the rice was perfect. Not sure why reviews are higher but they haven't deterred those on the know ; D

Yelp
Food: always good, delicious, the fish was fresh, and service was fast and amazing Ambiance: decor was like you are in Japan

Yelp
The best sushi restaurant in South Bay! This restaurant is always busy and good service! Owner is friendly and nice. All sushi especially nigiri are very authentic Japanese sushi. Highly recommend to try the today's special.

Yelp
Met up with a friend to try Sushi Maru and I was pretty impressed given that it's rotating sushi. What can I say? The quality isn't always there with rotating sushi. Here at Sushi Maru though, the cuts were pretty generous and looked fresh. It's easy to place specific nigiri orders and you can see it made right in front of you. My friend and I shared about 13 plates with a shochu cocktail each and our total was about $65 each with tip. When it came to the cuts, my favorites included the scallops, salmon, and salmon zuke. Some of the more premium ingredients like uni or toro weren't bad but I've definitely had better.

Yelp
Our go-to sushi spot! We love the energy the staff has, very fun and helpful! Food is also delicious. So delicious I spent more time actually eating than taking the photos! Although we did manage to get a pic of the sweet shrimp my boyfriend made after I ate it

Yelp
Food: 3 stars for the sushi rolls. I went with a rainbow roll, caterpillar roll, and seaweed salad. The rolls were subpar. The fish had discoloration to it and the California roll on the inside tasted premade and off. The seaweed salad tasted very good but I went there for the sushi. Ambiance: Clean inside and outside. Nice atmosphere and great customer service. They greet you when you enter and leave. Parking: Street parking only. Went at night and parking was available down the street. It's a nice little walk through Japan Town.

Yelp
I've been to this Sushi Maru a few times, but mostly to their other location in Milpitas. No longer there but a different Japanese restaurant. But, recently had takeout from here either from other people bringing sushi platters from here. The bentos are decent and the rolls are pretty good. They have been in J-Town for years and years.

Yelp
I have been coming here for awhile now. I have come for dates and family gatherings as well. I tend to order their lunch special. You get a lot of delicious food for a good price. The menu varies for the lunch special but I don't care what it is and just order it. We came close to their closing time around 1pm and it was still so packed. Their kitchen closes around 2pm but you can still finish your meal after ordering from the kitchen prior to their closing.
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
I have been here twice, and would confirm you get your money worth here, the sashimi is generous and high quality. With rising prices everywhere, I hope this shop will stay with the price structure and food quality. I have given up on most of my favorites

Yelp
Sushi Maru is a cute neighborhood sushi spot, and one of my go-to places for when I have no idea what I want to eat. Their menu is extensive, and their sushi is good quality for the price! This is one of the biggest reasons I frequent Sushi Maru so much. 2 pieces of Amaebi nigiri for 7.95? Wild. They also do revolving sushi in their restaurant too, which adds a fun aspect to eating there. Besides sushi, I would def recommend the tempura. So crispy on the outside and so nice and soft on the inside. They also have really good combo deals and lunch deals, and everyone who works there is really nice and friendly. 4 stars b/c although it's not the best sushi that I've tried, price to quality/yummy ratio is so good, and it's just an overall comforting, cozy place to eat at. :)
google avatar

Yelp
1 hour wait after we called in and staffed stated it would only take 15-20 minutes. Service was not accommodating and slow.
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 stars. Fun spot for sushi, bento boxes, etc. It's a small space, with good amount of seating, with both booths and bar seating by the conveyer belt bar. By noon there is definitely a wait, so come early! I totally agree with prior reviews that the value isn't great. We grabbed a whole bunch of sushi from the conveyer belt before seeing the price on a wall, with the plates ranging from 5.95 to 7.95 so they really added up FAST. The sushi was overall quite good, but some of the nigiri were dry or oversauced. Tons of menu options as well with bento boxes, specialty rolls, sashimi plates, etc. For 2 adults and 2 kids our bill was $140 which is pretty brutal for a lunch where I left a little bit hungry.... I liked that they gave us a scoop of napolean ice cream afterwards. All the servers were friendly and nice despite being very busy.

Yelp
Went here with my boyfriend on a Monday! I've been wanting to come here for a while and am glad I finally got to check it out. The servers and chefs were very attentive and welcoming! 10/10 service and an extra 10 for the complimentary ice cream that you are served after your meal :) Sushi Maru is now my boyfriend and I's favorite sushi spot!

Yelp
This is my go-to place for sushi in Japantown. I've been going here for over 10 years. Food is consistently good, prices are reasonable, customer service is always great, and service is quick. I always order the Nanook, which is a salmon nigiri topped with sauce and seared. On this visit, they had a special shipment of uni from Japan, so I tried one piece nigiri ($10). It was worth it though. The uni was so fresh and sweet, not pungent at all. I normally order their shrimp tempura sushi too, but I wanted to try their chu toro (fatty tuna). It was also very fresh and had good fattiness. Everything I've tried, I've liked. I think it's hard to find a miss here. I think their nigiri selection has gotten better too. The staff is also so, so nice!
google avatar

Xiao Z.

Yelp
This is my friends' favorite sushi place that she ordered delivery from this place for her big wedding day. And we dined in together this time. It just blew my mind by how fresh the sushi was!!! They have quite a variety of options, which already exceeds most of other mediocre sushi places in the Bay Area. And the fish tempura with roe was super crispy and tasty! I would def go back for more!
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
My friend and I wanted to try a new conveyor belt sushi spot, so we came to this place in Japan town. The rolls were decent, though prices were quite high (each plate ranged from $4.95 to $7.95, which is pricey compared to Kura where most plates are under $4). Fish quality was decent for conveyor belt sushi, and service was nice and checked on us a couple times throughout the dinner. It also wasn't super crowded either on. Sunday night, so we were glad that we didn't have to wait in line to get seated
google avatar

Krystal G.

Yelp
Pro tip: Always go for the Daily Special during lunch. You get a taste of different dishes for a good price. They change the special they offer everyday and this can be found right when you enter their door. There will either be a sample plate or description.
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Outstanding sushi! However, half of our party got their food 30 minutes ahead of the other half! Either y'all need to order sushi, or y'all need to order from the kitchen (or be willing to enjoy a 90 minute meal with half of your party watching you eat.) However, I suspect this is only an issue with larger parties. Complimentary mini scoop of ice cream included with your meal. Street parking only.
google avatar

Yelp
Good japanese food in Japantown SJ. Decent serving for a reasonable price. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
As a fan of revolving sushi, I was very excited to try this place. However the sushi pieces on the conveyor belt were a bit disappointing in terms of selection, freshness, and overall flavor. The ones we ordered from the kitchen had way better quality. While I understand the kitchen would inevitably have better selection and freshness, a revolving sushi restaurant's pieces on the conveyor belt should at least meet a minimum expectation, or else I'd just go to a regular Japanese restaurant. Besides the food the staff was super friendly, and the interior was a cute Japanese vibe so I'd still give it 4 stars.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
This is a small restaurant which gives it a cozy vibe. The service is excellent and so is the food. I had the bento box with teriyaki chicken and shrimp / veggie tempura. If you want sushi then they have a sushi conveyer belt that you can just grab what you want. If you are in the San Jose Japan town area then this place is a great lunch option.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so glad I stopped here of all places to eat. I loved being able to see the fresh options the chefs were putting on the belt. I really enjoyed every bite of food. The sushi is fresh and affordable. My interactions with the staff were all very pleasant. I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Katherine T.

Yelp
A very nice simple spot when you're craving sushi! I think the prices are on the reasonable side here compared to other spots in the bay, not on the expensive side but not cheap either. Quality was good and sushi was fresh. The bento box seems like a really good value. One of our picky eaters really likes the beef teriyaki and karaage. We also got the rainbow don which was fresh. The spicy tuna roll and California rolls were bigger than usual, so they were really good, they just come with 3 rather than 6 at most places. Overall, I'd come back and this may be a new regular spot if we're craving sushi
google avatar

Evan P.

Yelp
Unreal sushi experience, the fish is very fresh, staff has great personality, options are awesome, ambiance is very inviting. You can tell this is where the local community comes. 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Sushimaru is always my family's favorite restaurant, to eat Sushi and traditional Japanese food. Fish is fresh and every dishes are so delicious
google avatar

Conner S.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for sushi when I am up in San Jose! They are located in Japantown. The owners are Japanese and make an emphasis on having fresh high grade fish. There are many cuts they serve here that you won't find at most sushi places in the states. They do have a revolving sushi counter, but they also do have table service. I recommend sitting at the counter and ordering directly with the sushi chefs. The service is always quick & attentive. It won't be the cheapest meal but it's definitely worth it!
google avatar

Sin-Yaw W.

Yelp
I would not mind coming here for a casual Japanese meal, particularly lunch. It's a standard Japanese restaurant aiming for such clientele. For this reason, their bentos are the best value, the rest of probably obligatory menu items. Then I ordered Chirashi bowl (regular, not deluxe). These are sashimi topped rice bowl supposed to show-case the ingredients with light seasoning. Well, I had a reasonable meal that was not memorable. I had some good quality raw fish, and some rice to fill me up. That's pretty much it.
google avatar

Miss-Behayve N.

Yelp
Ugh I just love this spot in Japan town. It is so great and the sushi bar is so much fun! The chefs are great and always attentive. My favorite is the seared salmon nigiri "nanook" It is to die for!
google avatar

caroline b.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible service. Staff were definitely full but that does not excuse them to providing wrong orders and absolutely ZERO attention. Had to call several times to add another order and having them forget several times.
google avatar

Amelia R.

Yelp
Absolute favorite came on a last min date night so well priced amazing service and the exact perfect amount for sushi. Always love visiting and enjoying the food!
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
This is one of my go to sushi restaurants. The service is always amazing, the salmon and nanook nigiri are incredible and I love the oysters along with the spicy Guerro roll! For something refreshing, try the yamaimo. For something melt in your mouth delicious, the toro always serves. And for something unexpectedly delicious, try the chicken skin appetizer! We moved back from Hawaii last year and this is as close as we have found to a the sushi we used to enjoy on the islands. The sushi is fresh and delicious and love this is where you're paying for quality and not the expensive decor.
google avatar

Khuyen D.

Yelp
Great lunch spot :) they have affordable deals and I always leave feeling contently full! They also have a revolving sushi bar :) which you can order those items if you're sitting a regular table. The staff is always nice !

Yelp
Yes, absolutely love this place and highly recommended. Haven't been here in over 8 years. Glad they are successfully operating today. They treat customers with passion, respect & care. Excellent service and excellent employees willing to help. Very positive ambiance and good vibes. No lines during opening hour. Immediate seating. Relaxing inside. Sit at a table area or sushi bar. Everyone was very welcoming, friendly & nice to customers. Local residents and local visitors stop by to chat and dine in all the time. Pay at meters for 2-hours maximum street parking or circle around further to find parking within walking distances away. Lots of new condominiums everywhere. Love Japantown because it's always well maintained and looks cleanly sanitized everywhere you go. Everything you see in my photos including taxes, tips, free ice cream, green tea, salad, and miso soup with my entire mixed sashimi combination bento lunch total was around $30 USD (everything combined with my $5 tips into one single bill). Note, they don't accept American Express credit cards these days. Yes, unbeatable. I believe that Vietnamese foods & Korean foods are most expensive nowadays. Japanese foods are usually better options, much healthier, and more satisfying for the cost and value. Sushi Maru is definitely one of my favorite spots to eat/dine in for meals around here. Conveyor belt style sushi still rolling with pride. Perfect atmosphere. I rarely buy takeouts since I cook at home most of the time, but I will make time to check out restaurants and cute places. Staffs checked up on me several times and filled up my hot green tea cup consistently. They were all happy at their jobs. There are still many sashimi and sushi items that I love, but I cannot eat as much as I used to. Love this place very much. Fish are very fresh and served cold. Grilled salmon was good and fine to the bones. The house made beef jerky pieces were excellent. Good portions all items. Strawberry ice cream (free) was too fruity perfect for my tastebud today. I always remember the dining experiences here. Don't forget to get a Sushi Maru stamp card to earn points and food redemptions for next visits. Happy quality foods and excellent experiences at this restaurant for life.

Yelp
Best sushi place in down town San Jose! Owner by Sagiri san well known Kumamoto Chef! Gotta try this place for sure!
google avatar

Rattikarn W.

Yelp
Reasonable prices, good quality of food, great portion, complimentary ice-cream at the end, however, the place a bit small and could be long gone on weekends and holidays!
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
We've been here twice. The first time I had a chicken karage that was dry and without any sauce on the side. The second time I order a chicken teriyaki. This one had sauce but I dislike the fatty undercooked chicken skin on top of it. Seriously if you are going to leave the skin on you might as well grill it so that it is sort of dried out and crispy. It was unappetizing. The second time we came here because this was the only place open for lunch on a Sunday. It shows because this place was packed. Seriously, in order for Japantown to thrive more businesses need to be open in the weekend. Service was ok. Food a tad more expensive than Minato, our first choice, which was closed. The portion wasn't big either. This is a meh place for me.
google avatar

Maggie W.

Yelp
Popped by here on a Friday night. If you're coming here on the weekend during dinnertime, definitely allocate some time for you to find parking and walk over before the time you planned on arriving there! I ordered their 5 piece sashimi platter, which came with 1 piece of yellowtail, 2 pieces tuna, and 2 pieces salmon. So soft, the cut was delicious and the meat was very good quality. I savored it for the longest time before eating, lol. Next up, I ordered the Rainbow Roll and the Spider Roll. I love that this place doesn't serve imitation crab like other (cheaper) sushi restaurants! I really enjoyed the Rainbow Roll, it's always a safe and reliable choice for me whenever I go out to eat. The Spider Roll was very delicious too, the texture of the battered/breaded crab added a perfect kick to the softness of the crab and rice in the roll itself. My friend and I stayed here for around an hour after finishing up eating just talking, no one stopped by to ask us to pay. However, when our waitress noticed, she was very apologetic and gave us each a scoop of ice cream on the house for waiting. We both didn't mind, but we were very thankful for the special sweet treat! They also asked us to move tables after we ended up being seated, but no one ended up coming by and sitting at that table, nor was it moved. Curious... Overall, my experience here was good. I'd say if you show a friend around San Jose Japantown for a day, ending your night at this location is as good as you'll get.

Yelp
First time here and I had a pleasant experience. The conveyor belt sushi bar is exciting and running at a friendly speed for you to see the food whether you would like to pick them or not. The plates are color coded so you can check their sign on the wall for pricing of each plate's color. The sushi chef that served us was amazing and very accommodating to our requests. He checks after we eat the sushi to see we are happy with the food. We came at lunch so there was a line. It was a Sunday too so I think it is good to note that before you go. They have the option of dining at the tables or dining at the bar. We loved the sushi bar experience. Asari Miso soup here is so delicious. It's a regular miso soup with clams. Would definitely order this again. 10/10 would recommend!

Jeff G.

Yelp
We came for lunch on a Friday (you better check before coming here because they're not open for lunch every day); my wife and I brought our two young grandkids (10-year olds), thinking they would get a kick out of sitting at the counter, picking plates from the conveyor belt. They did like that somewhat, but they didn't eat much of it (we ended up eating what they left). The service was good, but the sushi was below average, which really surprised me. I've had better than that almost everywhere else we've ever been to, and even at home -- we buy sashimi at nearby Nijiya Market (it's consistently fresh and delicious) and make our own sushi quite often. My wife is from Japan; we know good sushi from bad. At this place, the portions were small, the fish didn't have much taste nor good texture, and the tekka maki was soggy, mushy, and hard to chew. The rolls fell apart a bit and the slices were cut almost too large to get into your mouth (and I'm a big guy). On top of that, it was very expensive. $125 for two adults and two small kids, for LUNCH. For mediocre sushi. Won't be back.
google avatar

Judy P.

Yelp
A little gem in San Jose Japantown. The service is always great, the food tastes amazing, and the ambiance is so family friendly! Parking is hit or miss. You sometimes get parking right out front (meter) or if you park in the surrounding neighborhood you will get lucky with free parking. It's nice to see that a restaurant I have been going to for almost a decade is still around. Items we order every time we come are agedashi tofu, hamachi Kama, toro, and nanook.
google avatar

Victor L.

Yelp
Their bento box is a deal. 3 items of your choice for under $20! They have one of the best beef teriyakis. Meat is served medium and it's so tender. The saba is standard and the tempura is perfect. Bento box alone is 5 star worthy. So what happened? My wife ordered a variety of sushi including the raw ebi (shrimp) where they fry you the head separately. The head was so crispy good. No problem there I think. She also had maguro (tuna) and toro (tuna belly). She said the tuna was a bit fishy but didn't complain otherwise. It was a few hours later at home when she got home she got a tummy ache. Now we're not sure if that's the direct cause but just noting it down in case others get sick too. I love the free ice cream that comes with your meal. My kids love the rotating sushi options. They're instant gratification when you're hungry. Service is ok as they forgot a couple of things, but they were kinda busy so I'll forgive them.
google avatar

Katherine D.

Yelp
First time coming here, and i would say the food is pretty good. I like how the sushi has its own paper menu and you can pick and choose, for a reasonable price. I ordered the lobster salad roll, and it was good but i tasted a little bit of wasabi in them. which is a little disappointing , as that wasn't mentioned on the sushi menu. I'm not a fan of wasabi and it kind of took away from tasting the lobster. Other than that, everything was tasty. I might come back, but I won't order the lobster salad roll again.
google avatar

Gerald L.

Yelp
Came again to try the sushi bar, which has the conveyer style. Quality was very good. The sushi chefs take good care of you. It's way faster to eat this way, but trust me, way more expensive, because it's way too easy to grab more plates! Haha. Three plate types with for three price points. Careful! They miscounted an extra plate when we checked out and then had to refund us.
