Where to Stay and Eat in Vancouver

"Entering this humble five-seat counter that is tucked in the corner of an unrelated restaurant and through the glass doors of a print shop serves as a pointed reminder not to judge a book by its cover. The plain, spare room is brought to life by the artfully simple, meticulous preparations of Chef Yoji Masuda, whose time spent in a top counter in Tokyo is amply apparent, though his own personality comes through." - Kevin Chau

Sushi Masuda

"Entering this humble five-seat counter that is tucked in the corner of an unrelated restaurant and through the glass doors of a print shop serves as a pointed reminder not to judge a book by its cover. The plain, spare room is brought to life by the artfully simple, meticulous preparations of Chef Yoji Masuda, whose time spent in a top counter in Tokyo is amply apparent, though his own personality comes through. With the assistance of his wife Akari, who provides a warm, attentive hospitality, the meal proceeds gracefully, from an indulgent savory "pudding" of sweet, pure-tasting monkfish liver to a wonderfully gelatinous beltfish cooked with sake and kombu, before arriving at the impeccable nigiri, which showcase exceptional ingredients alongside a singular delicacy and precision." - Michelin Inspector

Fantastic. Amazing. Heavenly. These are the words that I would describe my omakase experience with chef Yoji Masuda. Chef Yoji guided us on an adventure through each piece of sushi, highlighting where the protein came from and showcasing his beautiful knife skills. Each piece had the perfect balance of flavor and texture. Honestly, there's items that I normally do not eat, yet I find delicious in his hands. It was a 3-hour experience, and I was comfortably full at the end. Because there's only 6 seats per time slot, it felt intimate, and we even had the opportunity to chat with our neighbors. Overall, I can see why this talented chef earned a michelin star so quickly in less than a year of opening his restaurant.

The food was great! This was probably the best omakase restaurant in Vancouver hence the Michelin award. The dishes are very different compared to other omakase restaurants in Vancouver. Each dish was delectable and full of flavour. The quality of fish was also top quality. There were fishes I’ve never ate before which stood out to me. I will come back again !

We visited back in sept 2024 back before they earned their Michelin. The quality of the sushi was outstanding and the husband and wife team behind the counter are working very hard. I personally just didn’t get the warm reception I have had at other omakase restaurants.

My favourite omakase in the city! Best friend took me here for my birthday, what a great. Everything was super fresh. Chef Masuda was really nice and spoke perfect English (I believe he’s from here) so it was nice to chat with him about the ingredients/ where he sources them from and how he started the restaurant. 17 or so courses with many hot appetizers (3 crab dishes YUM!) with more than enough food - we were stuffed! I’ve never been this full after omakase and I’ve tried most of the high end ones in Vancouver. This was the most complete. He was super knowledgeable and it is such a homey, chill vibe like you’re eating at someone’s house. Very private/ exclusive feeling with only 5 chairs. Delicious food, meticulously prepared with a refreshing dessert. Thank you again and hope to be back soon :)

Amazing experience at Sushi Masuda! In such a competitive sushi city, chef Masuda is able to stand out in subtle ways that I didn’t expect. To be honest, I thought about writing a super detailed review but I don’t think a written review does it justice. At its core, it’s just very delicious and meticulously prepared sushi and absolutely deserving of its Michelin star. Having tried all the high end sushi options in Vancouver, I can confidently say Sushi Masuda is on its way to becoming my favourite. I hope to dine here again soon and I’m looking forward to making it my regular spot!

Absolutely outstanding! This has became my favourite restaurant in Vancouver by far. From the appetizers to the sushi, all delicious! The plates are also so pretty!

Had an amazing experience at Sushi Masuda. The space was very hidden, which made the restaurant feel exclusive and private. Only 5 seats were available. Every bite was fresh and had incredible flavour. The chef explained each dish and its components. Many of the fish/shellfish were imported from Japan. For the quality of the ingredients and a total of 18 dishes, the price of $230 pp felt reasonable. Highly recommend!

I feel lucky to have had the pleasure of dining at Sushi Masuda before word gets out about how spectacular it is and reservations become impossible to get! They source beautiful fresh and high quality ingredients flown in from Japan which Chef Masuda expertly prepares in front of you. We enjoyed a 19 course meal spanning two hours in an elegant and intimate setting that felt like we were let in on one of the biggest secrets in Vancouver. I hope to have another opportunity in my lifetime to enjoy a meal prepared by Chef Masuda! Thank you!

Yelp
Isn't this the address for Kamei Royale downtown? Yes it is! But it is literally a separate part inside the restaurant that houses one of the best omakase experiences in town. Chef Masuda is a kind and personal chef who creates amazing bites of greatness. This cozy 5-6 seat room (literally) is worthy of its Michelin star. Domo arigato.
