Four Chicago-Area Restaurant Shutters to Know - Eater Chicago

"Sushi Mura has closed at 3647 N. Southport Avenue after 14 years. The restaurant is victim to new development and plans to reopen at a new location in fall of 2019, according to a Facebook post. Southport Corridor News first noticed the shutter." - Daniel Gerzina

Wonderful sushi! Great sushi. Calm quiet spot. Our rolls were excellent! Bigger than I expected! I could only eat one and I usually order 2 or 3

Kate Hohenstatt

Google
A great sushi spot! High quality ingredients and nice service. Over the last few years Sushi Mura has definitely stepped up their game. The price is higher, but it’s worth it.

Michael Clark

Google
The sushi here is really good and tastes fresh. The Lake Shore Drive roll was the stand out for me. The service left a little to be desired. Not terrible by any means, but our server could’ve been more attentive. We were finished and I asked for the check and she must’ve forgot and we couldn’t get her attention for another 20 minutes. Could’ve been a one-off here but it was annoying enough to take a star off the review.

I'm stuck in rehab, my entire family is out of town chasing the eclipse, which is great. Only problem is there's nobody to spoil me for my upcoming birthday, so I took matters into my own hands! Sushi Mura came up in my area as having 5 stars and since I love unagi I ordered a JBD & a Dragon rolls. Delivery was lightning-fast! It came with the paper sack nicely stapled together. Both were delicious! I must try the rest of the menu real soon! 🍣🍣😋

Google
Sushi Mura’s sweet potato rolls are a must-try! The sweet potato filling was incredibly fresh, warm, and gooey, with a softness that perfectly balanced the light crunch. Each bite had just the right mix of textures, and the flavors were simple yet incredibly satisfying. You can tell they use quality ingredients and take care in preparing every roll. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a unique, comforting sushi option!

Visited for a late lunch/ early dinner and sat outside on the patio. Our server was efficient and friendly and we had our order taken in no time, our food came shortly after. Would highly recommend both the Lakeshore Drive roll, and the udon noodle soup.

Google
Lovely sushi restaurant with a lovely, relaxed atmosphere inside. Tables outside are dog-friendly and enclosed, though the traffic on Southport is not much fun to sit in. Friendly service. And the food is great: lots of vegetarian and vegan options available, including fried rice, bi bim bop, traditional maki (avocado, sweet potato tempura, cucumber, asparagus, oshinko, all decently priced), and my personal favorite, the Tofu Kat Su. Fine selection of sakes and cocktails.

Daniel Simone

Google
Excellent sushi with great health precautions. Try the jbd roll for sure. UPDATE 7/25 if anything they've gotten better. Service was excellent, rolls were great and so was the miso soup. Yaki soba was also well worth the order.

Yelp
I love this place and come here each time I am home in Chicago! The staff are friendly, the sushi is fantastic and you can get a reservation day of. We typically order the following: gomae + gyoza sushi rolls like the spicy crunch ramen - my mother orders the miso ramen chicken teriyaki - my father loves this Seating - there is indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor you might have to wait on a busy night, but the seating is pleasant.

Yelp
This is a good place to come for decent service and ambience. There are better places with more authentic tasting dishes. But this is a convenient walk for people that live here which is what we do. The presentation of my spicy Teriyaki Chicken dish was elevated and unexpected. At first glance, it looked like a fish dish (see pic). The teriyaki flavor good but not what you might expect. And I did enjoy the spicy little kick. You can order it without the slice as well. The Chicken Katsu was not as thick as what we're used to. So, if you come with a big appetite, you may want to consider an appetizer. Speaking of which, the Agedashi Tofu appetizer did not disappoint. Sushi Mura has plenty of seating and can accommodate larger parties. Sound levels can vary. Try to get a booth:)

Yelp
Food was decent at best, I felt like it was a little overpriced. We were brought out cold miso soup and the waitress seemed dumbfounded when we sent it back, she then later realized that the heat was off on the pot they were serving it out of. They also forgot my girlfriend's drink order and it didn't come out until after our food had been served. Plenty of staff on hand and the waitress and host were nice. I blame management for the poor performance, doesn't seem like they know what they're doing/no coordination.

Yelp
Following up on any other reviews I've left here (multiple times in the past) to reaffirm my undying commitment to Sushi Mura as the top sushi restaurant in Chicago. Service is fast and accurate and it's a mainstay of the Southport corridor. Love you SM!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is ok, but not the same as when Monica and Hursan owned the restaurant. For those of you that ate at Sushi Mura before they sold, it's not the same feel or quite the same quality. It's good, but not excellent. The ambience is somewhat steril than the intimate warm space it was before. My wife and I frequented the establishment often before Covid in the old building and miss that experience. We'll eat here again, but not with urgency like we used to. We've been gone from Chicago and the hood for a few years and we were feeling a-bit melancholy during this visit after we were told there are new owners.

Renee U.

Yelp
I love this place! The service is always great, and they have a great selection of sushi. One of the best parts is that you can usually walk in and get a table without any hassle. Their happy hour menu is also a highlight--great deals and delicious options.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid udon soups! The broths are tasty and the tempura is well made. There is both outdoor and indoor seating available - both were clean and well maintained. The beef maki had a nice teriyaki sauce though the beef itself was bland on its own and could have used some seasoning/tenderizing before cooking - wasn't super cohesive as I was chewing but I understand I'm getting picky lol. Staff and servi e was great! Would definitely come again!

Yelp
Date Night was at Sushi Mura on Southport. I got the Kamikaze roll, Max got the teriyaki salmon and we shared a tuna nigiri and yellowtail nigiri. I tried one edamame because the shape kind of weirds me out. I will say there weren't THAT many gluten free options since there was eel sauce and shrimp tempura incorporated into a lot of the rolls, but I guess you could always ask for substitutions. The kamikaze roll was a little warm, which I actually liked in this case because it had a melt in my mouth feeling. The tuna and yellowtail nigiri were good, but I've had better fish in the city. Itoko down the street for example I would say has fresher fish, at least that's how it tastes. It was bustling Saturday night, and unfortunately understaffed, like many restaurants in the city after Covid. Despite that, the service was really good and our waitress very nice.

Yelp
This chicago sushi and Japanese food spot near the Music Box theater is a fav place for me...The ambiance is nice, waitstaff is great and the sushi and other items are always fresh and tasty now add to that, really nice price point on everything and what's not to like? Needless to say I've never had a bad meal here and it's easy on the pocketbook when you aren't trying to spend a fortune on sushi. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I really enjoy Sushi Mura, but I don't think I'll be back. I don't think I have ever written a less than 4 star review, but on a slow Saturday lunch meal, our bill came with two extra rolls for that we didn't order. I verbally noticed the bill was abnormally high for a two person party. After paying and having the receipt sent to me via email, I double checked it and noticed two extra rolls. I notified our server by gently walking over to ask about the two xtra rolls added to the bill, and to my dismay, they had already had a new receipt printed with a corrected bill and promptly followed me to my seat, placing the bill on the table, ensuring the corrections were made and walking away. It felt like they weren't expecting me to notice, until I verbally said something about the price being high for a two person party. My friend felt the same. Ultimately, I was assured that we would get a refund and they made the necessary corrections needed to get ~ $25/30 in refund. Nothing has come. I write this review because I believe that this is a deceitful business practice, and I want you to be aware.

Yelp
Lovely little restaurant with decent sushi and great service at a very nice price point. For $19.00 we had a delicious bento box which came complete with miso soup, rice, cucumber salad, a California roll, 3 pieces of sushi and a choice of entree ( I chose the chicken teriyaki). Husband had the bim bim bop which I thighs was an odd choice at a Japanese restaurant but he enjoyed it. Very substantial meal at a very good value. It's hard to get away with a dinner bill in the 40.00 range in this area so was pleasantly pleased at sushi mura. Was it the best sushi iv had?? Nope but solidly good and I'll return. Recommend.

Yelp
Very nice staff with a welcoming space. My new sushi place! Get every time: Spider - roll best I've ever had Cream cheese salmon - v good Salmon don - v good goma ae (spinach w/ sesame sauce) - excellent Don't get again: beef maki (beef & asparagus roll) app - ok Edamame - no salt? Fine. Spicy tuna handroll - small, boring, too expensive

Yelp
Great food and service! We enjoyed a nice light sushi dinner. Prices are very reasonable. We love the low key local ambiance.

Ricky W.

Yelp
Had dinner here with the family on an early Sunday night. We got a couple of rolls, udon, and the bibimbap. I thought the food was excellent. The service was also excellent. My overall experience was really good and we will definitely come back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love. I don't know how this was my first time here. Decent prices. One of the best spicy tuna rolls I have ever had. Great service. And plenty of seating inside and outside.
google avatar

Yelp
We came in here around 5PM on a Saturday and had made a reservation, but definitely didn't need to. There was no one in there and we were seated and served immediately. The service was quick, but we had about 5 different servers during our meal so we weren't sure who was the main one. The dumplings were good. We ordered three roles, two of them being a california and a tuna one (cant remember the name). They were fine, none were outstanding. The location is convenient being right were the main shopping strip is, however i'd venture farther into the city next time to try a different restaurant.

Yelp
They let us sit outside and per our request turned the heaters on. That's a big plus for me since we're still not eating indoors for the most part. Food: Alaskan Salmon Maki: pretty standard tasting $8 for 6 pieces Phat n Sassy Roll: I would get this again. It was pretty good. $18 for 8 pieces Service: The employee who lit the heater was not very friendly. My friend asked her to turn on the second heater, and she replied with attitude, "I only have two hands. I haven't gotten there yet. I'm doing this one first." Luckily she wasn't our server. Our was very sweet and helpful with recommendations. She left before we were done eating, but she checked on us on her way out. She said they share tips anyways so she said it didn't matter if we close out our check with her. Ambiance: Outdoor dining area was relatively small but totally fine with us. Two heaters were available, and they turned them both on which we appreciated. Location: Near the Music Box Theatre. We saw a movie there which showed people eating sushi several times. I was craving sushi, so this place was perfect. Parking: close by on the metered street which turned out to be $5 for 2 hours.

Yelp
fantastic neighborhood spot... stellar and quick service makes this spot a great pre-show go to. good variety on the menu and ample outdoor seating also makes this a good spot for group-dining. the gyozas are great as all the sushi rolls we shared. eager to try the entree selections one day. reasonable prices especially for sushi in a hot spot (southport corridor). it's byob (though i believe they also sell alcohol) - a jewel and wine shop (owned by tango sur) are super close by for beverage needs.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
A lovely family-owned sushi spot right in the heart of southport corridor. Seriously, the love this place gets from the neighborhood is heartwarming to see. Sushi Mura has a decent sized patio right on Southport if you're looking for something outdoor, but the indoor space is newly renovated and spacious too! For starters, we went with the miso soup and edamame. The miso was piping hot when it came out, and super tasty! Edamame was also flavorful and fresh. For the sushi, we tried the bong's roll, bull's roll, and the classic california. Sushi Mura has got to be some of the freshest sushi I've had in Chicago. The presentation is also beautiful! We were so excited, we dove into the sushi before taking a photo of the complete meal, but I still include a picture with our (half eaten!) rolls. A nice touch was the complimentary side salad they provided between our appetizers and the sushi. Overall, fantastic experience at Sushi Mura. The staff can be overwhelmed at times because it is a popular spot, so go in with that in mind. The entire staff is extremely kind though and doing their best to give everyone a memorable dining experience.

Yelp
Great maki and specialty roll selection. Quick and super friendly service with a nice little patio space for outdoor dining in the summer months. BYOB!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Food was outstanding! Very fresh seafood. And to find sea eel on the menu was excellent! And fried shrimp heads-what could be better! Service was good altho I believe our waiter might have been new. But he was attentive to the right degree. Clean airy space.

Yelp
Visiting my daughter who lives in Lakeview. We walked here after arriving home from the airport. Such a delicious first meal in Chicago. It was a beautiful afternoon so we chose to sit outside. We enjoyed everything about the Temptation Roll and Bibimbap with beef. The dish arrived in a sizzling bowl which cooked up the most lovely crispy rice!! The Miso soup was also so good. The mango in the roll was so delicious, sweet and juicy. Service was pleasant and timely. Treat yourself!
google avatar

Sara Annela T.

Yelp
Dropped in based on a friend's longtime recommendation and loved this place! I was having a sushi craving moment and this quenched my hunger. I believe they used to be a BYOB establishment but not anymore. They were nice enough to allow us to finish our bottle, and we bought a cold saki in appreciation.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
As an avid sushi consumer, I was kind of disappointed with the quality of food here. The ambience is nice and cozy but that's about it. The cucumbers had zero flavor and the flavor combo of the sushi rolls were really unpleasant. One had shrimp tempura but was way too sweet in my opinion. The best roll was the ring of fire but that wasn't enough to shift my review. Service was really slow which surprised me since it was a Monday night. The servers didn't really seem excited to be there and you could tell. Overall it was $49 per person for 3 rolls and 1 appetizer.
google avatar

Nhi D.

Yelp
Visited Chicago for the first time with the boyfriend. He bragged about this gem he found during his last visit. This cozy restaurant did not disappoint - it had left the best impressions! Hospitable hosts, delicious dishes, beautiful presentation, wide selections. We weren't super hungry but managed to finish every single dish we ordered simply because they were all delicious. I would recommend this place to everyone! This will definitely be my must-go-to place when I visit Chicago!

al p.

Yelp
Unfortunately... the amount of noodles is less than before with prices the same... taste was excellent as before when I was last here...about3 months ago... The portions were much larger then ... so I was not filled up from the meal
google avatar

Nicholas W.

Yelp
Personally, this is my favorite sushi place I have tried in Chicago so far. The rolls are flavorful and the sushi tastes fresh. And the service was friendly but not overbearing! The vibe is exactly what I like in a sushi place. A little fancy but not intimidating. I really like this place!
google avatar

Apurva S.

Yelp
Had dinner here tonight - food was actually quite good overall. Not a high brow sushi place by any means but good rolls, sashimi was fresh, good apps. Service was pretty painful - for some reason the waitress was rude and pretty short with us. Almost to the point that it was laughable. In a town with no lack of good sushi, this gets a mediocre rating.

Patricia S.

Yelp
Best Chicken Teriyaki I ever had My companion said the Sushi was delicious Service great
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Sushi Mura is our favorite family sushi spot on Southport. The owners are very kind, and we've had nothing but pleasant experiences. They have out door seating in the summer, and they also offer some non-standard Japanese affair like Bibim Bop.
google avatar

Young C.

Yelp
The atmosphere here is superb. Not too dark that you can't see what you're eating, and not too bright that you notice all the imperfections of your date. The walls are laden with pictures of locals, regulars, and cubs players who frequent the restaurant. Service

Corinne B.

Yelp
Love this place! Dragon maki is the best! I get it even when I'm pregnant since the eel is cooked. I crave sushi every pregnancy!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been going to this place for atleast 20 years. They are consistent and always get a good rice to fish ratio. If you are ever unhappy they will fix it. So glade they returned to the neighborhood! Edit: the rolls on the left are slightly modified from the ones on the menu.

Emilka K.

Yelp
I ordered take out from them, had 2 gift cards ( 1with some remaining balance 1new received as gift for unknown $) . They told me that system had been charged recently ad well as ownership and they can't check the balance but can " give me " $50 for the new card... I didn't come for charity so I would rather use the real amount on the card ( I really think it was more than $50) . No information about that change posted anywhere and that is really bad customer service. I was told old owner might contact me in the future to tell me what balance on my cards are. Too bad, I wanted their food today as little treat but wasn't prepared to pay cash for it. You don't do business like that, money was spent on that gift card and now sorry you can't use it. I call it fraud!!! I'm going to contact Better Business Biuro .

Yelp
Solid local neighborhood sushi place. Kind and attentive service, good food. I like the ambiance as well.

Yelp
Got gnarly food poisoning from here. Service was fine, but man, I was sick for 2 days. Look out, folks!!
google avatar

Wenchy W.

Yelp
Great place! Clean, friendly staff, and the food was wonderful! The nigiri was divine. And loved the mochi ice cream.

Aimee V.

Yelp
I used to come here almost every week but with the new menu, I've been opting for Kai further up the street. They increased their prices overnight by almost 50% on some items (chicken teriyaki bento box) and removed some of their most popular rolls like "don't tell mama". I am pretty sad that the menu changed and feel like it will overall hurt their business as we get into the winter season. It seems like enough people were frustrated about their new selections that the staff created small placards that states they can still make their favorite rolls. Please improve your menu.

Yelp
This was literally the best sushi experience we have had in years. We eat sushi all the time, but mura was excellent today. The service was extremely fast (service across Chicago has been slow during the pandemic). The negi Toro was really a hit with us. Also the Uni was really good. In addition we ordered the sashimi platter which was a really generous portion and good quality pieces. The wasabi tobiko with quail egg was excellent as well. All of the other sushi was on point. Additionally, we ordered the soft shell crab and agedashi tofu which were great as well. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
My fiance made dinner reservations for 6:45 PM on a Wednesday night; we arrived on time. This was our first time dining at this restaurant, and it will also be our last. Food was great--the volcano roll, sea bass, and chicken teriyaki bento box were delicious! But, service was horrendous. After being seated and looking over the menu, the first thing our server said to us was, "What would you like to order?"... no "Hi, how are you? Have you dined with us before?" Nothing of that sort, just straight to business. We placed our order and received our food/cocktails thereafter. The server came to our table to ask how everything was when we first got our food (this was nice!). However, we did not receive a visit from our server at any other point throughout our meal. My fiance wanted another cocktail as he finished his mid-meal. The server only then returned when our plates were cleared around 7:30 PM. She didn't ask if we wanted anything else, and instead, she had a device in hand ready to go so we could close out our tab. She turned the device to face my fiance so we could pay, but my fiance asked for a second cocktail instead first. We were both still working on our drinks while the server returned another time around 7:45 PM, this time to rudely say, "We have another reservation. Do you mind?" The reservation she was referring to was literally being seated at the table directly behind ours as she was ultimately asking us to leave. Completely caught off guard, we just pushed our UNFINISHED drinks to the side on our table and left. We've never had this happen while eating out. Since when is it a thing that you can't stay at least ONE HOUR from your reservation time to enjoy food and drinks. If you're looking for a place that will rush you, a paying customer, out the door before you've even finished your food or drinks, I can't recommend this place enough!
google avatar

Nabil J.

Yelp
If you want overpriced mini-roles stuffed with air and ideas shrimp tempura that you can't see or feel, this is the place for you. The Nigiri looks like they were made by a 5 year old kid ( not to insult 5 year old kids) The location is also kinda sad, across the street from a grocery store.
google avatar

Yelp
Only stopped in for a sake nightcap. Sake service was impeccable. Friendly staff. Comfortable dining room. Delivered a complimentary appetizer. Will definitely be back for sushi!
google avatar

Marie F.

Yelp
Tried sushi mura for the first time this weekend. The rolls were excellent especially the ring of fire! Will definitely be back. My only suggestions would be to add more wine by the glass/bottle options, space the tables a little more (i could hardly hear my friend at one point due to the loud table next to us)and to dim the lighting at night since it was kind of bright. Other than that, a great sushi spot!
google avatar

Anya S.

Yelp
The company at Sushi Mura was great. The servers, hostess, and staff were all very kind and welcoming off the bat. The atmosphere was friendly and the sushi even better!
google avatar

Carly S.

Yelp
I am so happy they reopened! This is such a lovely spot on Southport. We love the edamame and miso soup to start. My favorite sushi rolls are the California, the bulls roll, and the Cubs roll. Honestly though, I don't think I've had anything bad here. The servers and employees are always friendly and grateful, adding to the experience. Sometimes the service is a little slow, but overall the sushi will keep me coming back!
google avatar

Aishwaryaa D.

Yelp
The patio area is nice and the quality of fresh fish is great but too expensive for the amount of food you get and would not recommend.

Ilona I.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile since I live in the area. It has pretty good service, but the fish is not super fresh. Overall presentation is nice, just not a fan of the fish.
google avatar

Jisha J.

Yelp
The food here is fantastic and the service is excellent! I got the salmon teriyaki bento box and everything was so fresh tasting! The veggies still had such good crunch and the California roll and the nigiri pieces were so good! The salmon was a decent size portion and sauce was perfect! I didn't feel heavy after eating it even though it was a ton of food! I would have taken pictures but ate the food too quickly to make that happen. We will be visiting this place again very soon! Overall, a wonderful spot to get some delicious food!
google avatar

Jacque V.

Yelp
The place looks amazing but the sushi doesn't match the price. Ingredients do not taste genuine, like rice for rolls is not good, and not much to distinguish flavors.
