Sushi Ryu

"Having had almost 30 years’ experience working in renowned sushi restaurants in Taipei, the owner-chef opened here in 2017. The décor is traditionally Japanese, with solid wood countertops imported from Canada. He insists on shipping the fish from Japan three times a week and his rice is seasoned with three different kinds of vinegar. Only omakase menus are available; the monk fish liver sushi is a standout." - Michelin Inspector

5 Michelin-Starred Japanese Restaurants To Check Out In Taipei

"Walk past the bamboo-lined doors and enter into a zen-like oasis. The sushi selection include kinmedai, octopus, shima-aji (fish), uni and chutoro. End the meal with a seasonal fruit platter. Expect to pay TWD 3,000 to 5,000 per person." - Kenneth Goh

I visited Sushi Ryu for a special birthday lunch with a friend, and the experience was overall excellent. Every piece of sushi was skillfully prepared and served at the perfect pace, allowing us to savor each bite. The uni (sea urchin) was especially memorable—generously portioned and incredibly creamy, it brought so much joy to the meal! The atmosphere was calm and elegant, with the chefs focused and attentive. We loved the counter seat experience, watching each piece being made right in front of us—it added a beautiful sense of ceremony to the meal. One small downside: I had mentioned during the reservation that it was a birthday celebration, but there wasn’t any special greeting, dessert, or surprise from the restaurant, which was a bit of a letdown. That said, the quality of the sushi itself more than made up for it as a Michelin one star restaurant. A fantastic spot for serious sushi lovers looking for a refined, omakase-style dining experience in Taipei.

Quite pricy but they give you a lot of food. By Taipei standard, ingredients are as good as you can get. Pace is a bit fast which makes the place feeling a bit restless. Service staff is nevertheless attentive. Make sure you ask for chef Shawn, professional and great advice.

I found mixed reviews about Sushi Ryu online when I was doing pre-reservation research on this Michelin one-star restaurant I can attest that the quality curation and taste at Sushi Ryu are still very good. The staff was incredibly helpful, especially when we didn’t get the mandarin names of the fish or an ingredient. They kindly showed us diagrams with detailed explanations of the seasonality and different preparation methods. The Onakase menu could change due to seasonality and the availability of ingredients. During my visit, I had the pleasure to find out how great these dishes were: 燒白鰻配山椒鹽、吞拿魚赤身漬、赤海膽、紅喉壽司配蘿蔔泥 My visit was right before my flight out of Taipei, and the meal was a wonderful highlight in the midst of all the hustle and the trip back home.

For NT9700 per pax without sake, I think the food is okay only

The service is good; food is nice but not too much creativity. There is no sparks for the dining experience. Whether it is worth 7000 dollars for a set menu is a doubt to me. Or I simply spent more on the Michelin star rather than the food and aspirations itself.

The appetizers, while weren’t omakase sushi, were incredibly delectable. But of course, when it came to the actual sushi, it was incredible. Not the kind of place to go for flashy presentations, but the food definitely has quite a lot of substance; I would expect only true connoisseurs would be able to appreciate Sushi Ryu

All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. The service and vibe were also nice. It’s kinda noise if someone talking loud next to you or near you since everyone was sitting in the bar table together.

Yelp
While the food itself was great, the pricing was misleading and service went bad at the end. I would not recommend this place as a Michelin star restaurant. Everything initially started great. The hostess was absolutely great throughout the entire night. She informed us of the menu which was either $7k set menu or omakase until we were full which is typical $9k-$12k. We opted for omakase. Every piece we received was great. We just noticed that we didn't get pieces that others were getting. That's not because each omakase was different. The others who were doing omakase were getting the same pace and pieces. However, it appears the chef or chefs wanted to close up or go home because at 9pm, they stopped serving. We were not full or done. We expected omakase to run until 10pm. Ending at 9 would have been fine, had they informed us from the beginning. Not only that, we were charged $12k/person. But we noticed that we did not receive some pieces others had received. This entire meal felt disappointing at the end. We were charged the full price yet we were rushed out and didn't receive what appeared to be the full menu. If you must go here, opt for the set menu.

Yelp
With friends recommendations, we visited Sushi Ryu. Our friend come here at least once a month. The sushi chef strictly chooses the most seasonal seafood and cook with strict and complex technique. The chef knows how to balance different kinds of flavors to meet the requirement of terrific cuisine.

Yelp
In town for work. Came here after researching about Taiwan's Japanese food and decided to give this place a try. Average service and overhyped food. I'm comparing it to San Francisco's Michelin one star and I'd say it doesn't live up to the expectation. Would not let me take photo with the chef coz he's busy. Asked the owner to take one outside for me instead and she appears impatient and took two bad quality photos without asking if I'm good with those. Also this place is overpriced. $150 USD for the second tier option is not worth it.

Yelp
Full disclosure, the actual date of my visit was January 9th 2019. Sorry everyone, I've been slacking on getting my reviews up. Sushi Ryu is a high class dining experience. My partner and I went here for lunch. I do not believe there is an a la carte menu, Omakase experience only. However, there are different pricing tiers, each entails different grades and selection of fish. I opted for the highest tier, which I believe was about 5,000 TWD. RYU uses less wasabi and the wasabi they use is very mild with a radish essence. Every piece of fish is of superior quality. Overall an excellent Omakase experience certainly worth a trip. Meal started with Chawanmushi--Soft and hot. Some green peas floated in the center of the dish, on a layer of what I believe is kelp broth. Many small bites of various vegetables and fruits throughout, including crab, and scallop. The dish is marked by a lovely smoked bonito undertone. Now from here on I'll get into the sushi, with tasting notes where applicable. #1 Buri or adult yellowtail. There was some information lost in translation, so I'm not entirely sure what kind of fish this was. But nice fresh grated real wasabi on the side. Fresh and succulent piece of fish. #2 Seared Barracuda. Very warm/hot piece of sushi. Served with brown rice. Reminiscent of eel with a grilled complexity. #3 Japanese Spanish Mackerel. Nice in combination with the onions and ginger. Mackerel has clean taste--little to no oil. #4 Hokkaido cod. Cooked medium rare. Nicely cooked skin. Some butteryness going on. Nice complexity from hot pepper flakes. #5 Swordfish--meat doesn't have much taste. Just onions that really come across. #6 Bluefin Tuna. Creamy. Lean but umami. Something crunchy in there...maybe cucumber or scallion. #7--Skipjack #8--Botan Ebi. Shrimp with slight sear/flame taste. #9--Uni #10--Horse Mackerel #11--Sailfish?? Something may have been lost in translation problem here. Regardless, this was pretty good #12---Chutoro #13--Otoro--seared. I actually think i'd prefer it if this was not seared as I feel it created a slightly bitter astringency which detracted from the buttery quality of the fish. #14--Ikura. Yuzu adds nice complexity. #15--Anago #16--Tamago The meal closes with miso soup, which has nice long strands of thin sliced tofu. And a fruit salad ended the experience.

Yelp
For a Michelin star omakase, this restaurant nails it. We were excited to get a reservation while visiting Taipei. The staff spoke minimal English, but had an encyclopedia of the fish we were eating and showed us with each course. Presentation was phenomenal. Everything was delicious. We were able to try so much variety, I think there were 24 courses or so. We had to pass on the soup because we just couldn't make room for it. Staff was professional and kept checking in on how we were enjoying our meal. My only issue was transparency in pricing. We have been to multiple omakase restaurants with Michelin stars. The bill at the end was close to $800 for 2 people excluding any drinks, which for a 1 star felt steep compared to others. Also, there were other tiers we weren't given options to clearly which may have been more suitable considering we couldn't finish the meal. That being said, I'd still highly recommend coming here. The quality is undeniable!

Yelp
The ambiance of this place is incredible. You can watch the chef and his assistants work directly. There are only fixed menus and they are pricey-- you also don't know what you'll be ordering in advance, but if you're up for anything I would highly recommend it! The staff speaks only a little English, but thy go out of their way to be helpful. It should also be noted how attentive the staff are! I would definitely recommend checking this out if you are in Taipei, enjoy Japanese food, and enjoy fine dining. Thank you for an incredible dinner!
