Restaurant Closings in the San Francisco Bay Area | Eater SF

"A 10‑year‑old ramen spot in Mountain View from chef/owner Nobu Iwahashi has permanently closed after business dropped by about 50% due to the pandemic, despite a rent break." - Eve Batey

The food was really good, the flavor and the variety were great, but the only thing that bothered me was the waiters hovering over you, even when you asked for a minute to decide what to order. Also, they need to fumigate the place. We were sitting near the wall, and I saw a cockroach while I was eating, so I moved.

Sushi Shalala is a must-visit spot if you’re craving authentic, flavorful Japanese comfort food in CDMX. I started off with edamame and some perfectly crispy tako yaki, followed by a cold Sapporo beer that paired beautifully with their rich, savory tonkotsu ramen. To top it all off, I had fried plantains and shrimp on a stick—a surprisingly perfect sweet and savory combo to close out an incredible meal. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the food was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully presented. Whether you’re a local or just visiting Mexico City, Sushi Shalala is definitely worth adding to your foodie list.

My wife and I absolutely loved eating here. The portions of the food was great, we had our fill. The atmosphere was great it wasn’t loud, they had some music playing but we still could here each other. 100% would recommend.

Came in around 30-45 minutes before closing, waited to be greeted and then was asked immediately if we knew what was going to be ordered because the kitchen was going to be closing. Cool, order in. Watered down alc drink, whatever. Owner (who has been seen in tiktoks asking people to come in) stands at the doorway arms crossed staring at us for ordering. Food gets here, guess there was a misunderstanding, extra ramen was brought out. Server got a little caddy so whatever we’ll keep it. Food was undercooked, unseasoned and generally not good. Not to mention the owner kept hovering around waiting for us to finish when there were still 2 other tables eating. Cool. We dont eat the food, pay the tab and leave before 845. I’m from out of town and love to support local businesses. Especially if its authentic cultural food but I’m not okay with being pressured and felt like I’m an inconvenience. Would not recommend

If you're looking for authentic Japanese taste in CDMX, look no further. A cozy family owned business we encourage you to support. The first mouthful of their Wakame salad (with their awesome chilli oil!) transported us to Japan! Paired it with their generous size Sake, we momentarily forgot we were in Mexico! 😊

The food are just lame. No flavor at all. You have to eat the food with their garlic chili oil because they have no flavor. And it took ages for them to take the bill. After we called the waitress, it took her like 10 minutes to get us the bill. And when the owner came take the payment, I lost my mind because when he received our card, he even got food on his hand because he was just making sushi over the counter… after using the POS machine and touched the card and receipt, he went back to the counter to make food again without washing his hands…

As long as Asians don't come here then the food might be considered good for local standards, hahha. I don't think Mexican food culture is strong enough to venture into other cuisines. Even Cambodia has better Ramen shops and cheaper too.

Google
Am giving a 5 star because of the authenticity of the ramen and the taste. The noodles are very smooth. Soup is as real as you can get in Japan. Certainly the restaurant is run and own by a Japanese, very obvious. Unfortunately, the service is nothing like Japanese. Staff are very unfriendly, does not look at you directly, and they are basically very robotic. Another suggestion, if you use a big bowl to serve your ramen, perhaps you can also use a bigger spoon with a curve end so that the spoon does not slip into the soup/bowl. I had to scoop my spoon up from the bottom of the bowl

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this place for a while and we finally made it out. Service was nice - staff was helpful in answering our questions regarding the menu options. I wish the owner would have walked around to chat with us. He did greet us but kept moving. Food was delicious - the katsudon was on pointe. The curry katsu udon soup was my favorite. We also enjoyed the beef ramen. Don't forget to order a sparkling lemonade. Bathrooms were clean. We'll be back

Yelp
We decided to eat some ramen after getting a little tired of all the yummy Mexican food while on vacation. We chose this spot as it was not too busy but not totally dead on a Monday night which seemed promising. Although advertised, they were out of Modelo. We went with a Corona instead along with a shoyu chicken ramen and a tonkotsu pork ramen. We were informed there was no more pork and so ordered the chicken instead. The beer took a long while to get to us and the ramen was seemingly never coming. I even started looking up other nearby restaurants as I was getting hangry. The server did not come check on us or apologize for the long delay at any point. Finally, the ramens arrived and I was disappointed to see a very plain ramen served with no toppings. Very unfortunate as the broth and noodles were good! But the toppings were missed. After eating, we had to walk indoors to get someone to acknowledge we were finished and to pay and leave. Overall, the ramen has great potential but the service was extremely lacking.

Yelp
Wear during a cool busy lunch day. The entire Staff were polite, answered questions about options, and were prompt. Ordered Vegetable Ramen Soup and it was served fresh, hot, and tasty. The soups had plenty of vegetables and noodles. Also orders a pot of tea. The tea was served hot and tasted of fresh tea leaves. Look forward to returning for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Excellent food! Great service and a very good atmosphere. What I really liked about this place is the service, a Japanese cook made our order, he was very interesting and polite. The food is amazing, fresh and tasteful! I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Really good for ramen! Their ramen is very traditional with only three different flavor options. I have tried the miso and the pork flavored and the pork is the best. The meat itself has great flavor. The noodles seem like they are handmade but even if they not, they are so good! I haven't tried anything else here, but the ramen is a must-try.

Yelp
Sometimes you want to try something to change up the food here in D.F. I had a California roll w fish. Miso soup n coke for 11 bucks. For the price it's not that good. + Miso soup is good hearty w good amount of seaweed and to fu. The have siratcha! Wifi. _ I have noticed in almost all japanese restaurants in mex the rice on the rolls is too thick and heavy. They add lemon soy sauce WHY? ....No U have to as for natural s oy sauce fir it to be regular.

Yelp
The food was good but long wait and they weren't keeping up with our table so they had to have different waitresses come to us and they didn't pay attention to us and other people. The place was dirty and restrooms too so I wouldn't like to go there is u don't like dirty places but the food is good!

Yelp
Inconsistency! We returned to this restaurant mainly because it was in the neighborhood and we were exhausted after our trip to Puebla. It was Saturday evening around 6 p.m. I ordered the same thing I always get at a Japanese restaurant: shrimp tempura. It was not fresh. It tasted fishy. And the coating was somewhat oily. Fail. The rice was good and my partner remarked that although he had the same thing as before it was served differently and was somewhat better. Imagine that.

Yelp
This is by far, one of the best ramen I've eaten. We also tried the udon soup with raw egg, and it was delicious! We also tried cheese and banana kushiage, really nice ones! And ordered green tea as beverage, which was very good too. Waiters attention was not exceptional, but they were kind with us. I really recommend this place!

Yelp
Mediocre of the mediocre. Sashimi isn't fresh enough. As for the ramen, not authentic at all and below average. But the staff was nice.
