**ALERT – Discriminatory and unwelcoming to foreigners!! Intention to separate Japanese and foreigners**
I booked this omakase well in advance before my trip to Tokyo, but the experience was extremely disappointing and felt discriminatory. We were taken to a private room and told that we had booked that room for omakase, even though we never requested it. Having had omakase many times in Hong Kong and Japan, I never expected to be served sushi at a table in a closed room without the chef in front of us.
When we asked to cancel the booking if we were forced to sit in the room, we were told there would be a penalty. The staff member initially spoke fluent English, but when I questioned this arrangement and asked for clarification, he suddenly pretended not to understand and stopped responding. When I asked for his name, name card, and whether he was the manager, he only replied “staff only”. I said I would file a complaint.
A few minutes later, the same staff member came back and suddenly told us counter seats were now available, even though he had said earlier that they were fully booked. When we went out, there were empty seats at the counter that had clearly been available from the beginning, and no new customers arrived; only four people were sitting at the counter when we first came in and it stayed that way.
As someone who has lived in Hong Kong and the UK for many years, this is the first time I have personally experienced such treatment, and it happened in Japan, which makes it even more upsetting. I left feeling absolutely shocked, upset, and unwelcome, and would not recommend this place to any foreign visitors.
