The 16 Best Restaurants in Mountain View - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"When it comes to sushi, all we really want is high-quality fish prepared expertly and served without too much fanfare. Fortunately for us (and all sushi lovers within driving distance of Mountain View), this is precisely what Sushi Tomi offers. The menu is short, but it’s still packed with standouts, from excellent nigiri, rolls, sashimi, and chirashi, to comforting bowls of udon. At lunchtime, take advantage of the $20 bento box or $22 sushi/sashimi deal for generous portions." - gabi moskowitz

I recently visited this sushi spot, and while it might work for casual diners, it didn’t meet the expectations of a sushi aficionado. The fish quality wasn’t as fresh as I’d hoped, and the flavors were fairly lackluster. Some pieces had an off texture, which was disappointing for a sushi lover. The service was decent, and the atmosphere was okay, but not enough to make up for the food quality. Additionally, the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, and you have to put your name down for a wait. Given the subpar quality, it’s definitely not worth the wait. If you’re not particularly picky about sushi, you might find it passable, but there are far better options in the area. I won’t be returning.

Had the Omakase and it was more food than I could handle. The place feels warm, unpretentious, and homey. The service was kind and welcoming.

An old famous Japanese restaurant in Castro, you usually need to wait in line to dine in. Good atmosphere but the sushi is just your average sushi. Fish doesn’t takes too fresh. We got special nigiri(left) and nigiri set(right)

Great Japanese food. I got a box lunch with katsu and gyōza and it came with salmon miso soup, rice, and a small salad. The serving size is not large, but the quality was very high with the katsu being extra crispy and the gyoze perfectly made. Prices are SV high, and the place is pretty busy.

Almost inclined to give 5 stars since the sashimi is very fresh, but just a bit expensive for the portion (got the deluxe chirashi)

Horrible Experience – Got Food Poisoning and No Accountability! If I could give zero stars, I would. My wife and I had dinner here on 1/25/25, and it was one of the worst dining experiences of our lives. We ordered the sashimi dinner and a dinner combo, and while eating, I already had a bad feeling – the sashimi felt mushy and not fresh. But we gave it the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. After we got home, my wife started having stomach pain and diarrhea. At 4 AM, I got hit with the same thing – nonstop diarrhea the entire day. It was so bad I was debating whether I needed to go to the emergency room. I ended up taking medication, and my symptoms only started easing late at night. The next day, I felt completely drained and weak. When I called the restaurant, the owner initially seemed nice and even encouraged me to see a doctor. He later said he would refund our dinner cost if I stopped by. But after a few weeks, when I finally reached out again, he changed his story, saying he wouldn't refund anything because the city inspector told him not to. What kind of excuse is that? If you served bad food, own up to it. This place made us sick, and the owner backed out on his word. If you care about your health, stay far away from this restaurant. Absolutely unacceptable.

Superb sushi. Love their chirashi bowls and lunch combinations. The grilled mackerel (saba) is fantastic. Not a super big space = very long wait if you go during meal rushes, but they also do takeout. Whatever they have on special is probably fresh and worth trying.

The sushi was fine but not amazing. The miso soup was good. The house salad could have been a lot better - the dressing seemed to be mostly mayo.
