Where to eat before a theater show in Minneapolis | Eater Twin Cities

"Despite the gimmick, conveyer belt chain Sushi Train is a great spot to spot to grab dinner before a Minnesota Orchestra concert. With the usual maki and nigiri options as well as a few creative hits like the “Green Haven,” with serrano peppers and avocado, the food alone is worth a stop." - Eater Staff

This place is fantastic! Staff was really nice, food was great and the place was clean. My kids tried so much and there was only one dish they didn't like, but they're also kids. Side note, the bill adds up fast without you realizing it 😂. Last picture has the price of the plates, as of this month.

Sushi train restaurants are always a fun vibe! The food is always passable, but if you're looking for amazing sushi to go a restaurant where that is the focus rather than a restaurant, that is more about the fun of the experience! We had a great time enjoying the conveyor belt and the cute stickers on the way out!

All staff is super friendly! Me and my Fiance come here all the time and love it every time! Never a bad time coming here. I enjoy the chicken wings and the PB&J Rolls being not a big sushi eater but love it either way!

I love this location better than the Downtown one mostly because of the free parking! It makes such a big difference when you don't have to worry about that. Anyway, I feel like the sashimi here was better as well. We got nice thick cuts of salmon and tuna. They have a new mango roll that is delicious. The usual rolls are there, along with specialty rolls that you pay $6.95 for. As sushi places go, that's cheap. But since you're probably trying other stuff, expect to get about 6-7 or more plates adding but to over $45 per person. On a Thursday night, there wasn't much happening here but possibly it gets as busy as downtown on the weekends. The staff was very helpful and the place is clean. I'd come back to this location ifbI felt like going to a conveyor belt sushi place.

Entered the building; a bright, sunny, hot, and exciting day for me to eat alone with staff greeting me immediately. Setting the scene with it being 3/4pm on a Saturday (not too busy). Sat with a cute waiter and also an overview of what to do as a first timer and how it all works, perfect. My over experience was great (would do 3.5 if could). However the sushi was my only problem as I've had cheaper for better and I feel the conveyor sushi is the trend that comes with the food. Very come and go and come and go it did. I enjoy the spicier dishes and even the seaweed salad was delectable. But, some spicy rolls (yellow tail and salmon) had a plain, not so spicy taste (I usually like spicy and just didn't hit as hard as other places. Will say their spicy tuna was AMAZING. Hands down some of the best spicy tuna I've had. Otherwise other dishes didn't change anything in me for the price they charged (tho the pricing system is easily laid out and dont complain about that). I would come back with friends but not get as much as the plates can be pricey (not someone staff can control as they were all amazing and super nice). Overall my mental review is 11/17 and a 3.5/5.

Google
The food was really good. It is so fun to be able to see the food because you pick it out. Definitely come hungry because you are going to eat a lot! Our server was so nice, friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend coming!

Google
It's overall just okay. The food was okay. It was all lukewarm. The prices was expensive for mid food. Its a cool experience with the revolving belt but that's it.

Yelp
My daughter was craving sushi, I remembered driving past this restaurant once. Nice restaurant with a huge projector playing on the wall and music playing in the background. The server came to give us menu and told us if there's anything that can't be found on the belt, they will make it. Lots of protein and just the right amount of rice in their sushi. Definitely recommend if you're in the area.

Yelp
Quality of sushi/sashimi, best in TC. Atmosphere is pretty appealing and the conveyor belt serving set up blends perfectly with the entire atmosphere. And they offer a la cart selection in the menu as well. Love this place. Will come again

Yelp
Hidden gem for sure. I thought it was well priced for the experience. Staff were super friendly, and the vibes were relaxed. I wouldn't say it's the nicest sushi place, but very good for the price. I'll definitely go back

Yelp
All aboard! Conveyor belt sushi = nostalgia for me, and way better than any model train... But probably more relevant for you in a restaurant view, I'll just mention this sushi here is well above Minneapolis average imo. Of course theres fancypants delicious spots like Kado no Mise, Billy Sushi, etc, but when you want to balance the fullness of stomach with fullness of wallet, while scratching a sushi itch, come be merry at the sushi merry-go-round. Sushi Train's the only place in the cities where I can reliably get ankimo! If you know of other spots, please do expand my monkfish liver map. I also love that there's ikura here. The plates are supposedly RFID'ed so the sushi automatically composts itself or self destructs or something like that when it's past its freshness. I like the uptown location better, but have been to and enjoyed both.

Yelp
My new fav conveyor belt sushi place in the twin cities! We had a fun Mom & Daughter date here because we both LOVE sushi and it's so much fun to just take the plate that looks the most appetizing. We'll definitely be back soon. Not the highest quality sushi but the prices reflect that. I love that all prices are easily figured out by the plate color. And their marketing said that each plate has an RFID so they know when each dish expires and can pull them off of the conveyor belt if it's not eaten in time. Our waiter was friendly and explained that a few of the dishes were order only (not on the conveyor belt). Here's what we tried: Salmon Sashimi (5/5) $6.05 SO delicious and beautiful Volcano Roll (5/5) $6.95 this one was served hot and had to be ordered, then arrived to our table on this cute little train car. So fun! It was a little too spicy for my tween daughter because it has sriracha sauce, but I loved it even though I'm not a huge fan of spicy things. Sweet Potato Roll (3/5) $3.60 was good but not great Philadelphia Roll (3/5) $4.50 standard Shrimp Tempura Roll (2/5) $4.50 but maybe I chose poorly and took one that was close to its expiration time. It was dry and cold.

Yelp
I had never been to one of these restaurants before, but absolutely love every single thing about it! The train is kept well stocked, the descriptions are absolutely accurate, the prices are wonderful, and service was spectacular!

Yelp
I ordered the vegetable tempura udon for delivery. It arrived piping hot, with the broth separate so the noodles didn't get mushy. The tempura was crisp and not at all oily. I was very impressed! I've never had the sushi, so this review is just for the udon soup.

Yelp
The taste was good but I wish I knew about the small portion sizes before I ordered online! I got two rolls, each contained 4 pieces. Might go back again because I did like the flavor but will need to order more next time!

Yelp
I just found this place and what a great surprise! We have been to its other location and found this one is only 5 mins from our house. The food was outstanding and there was items I never have seen before. Our server Jon L was probably one of the best attentive and personable servers I have come in contact with. The establishment is very clean and spacious. I think we will add this to our weekly spot!

Yelp
I have been stoked that Minneapolis has FINALLY gotten a conveyor belt sushi joint. I know they had a location on the edge of downtown/loring park, which isn't the easiest to get to and find parking so when I saw they were opening a location super close to my apartment I was jazzed! The strip mall they are in has really been bringing in some rockstars lately and giving the joint a breath of fresh air and this place is just a great addition. It just opened in the last week so I have to admit they do have some kinks to work through. I heard someone a booth over note there was no carbonation in their soda and they had someone training on my table. There is a range of options and prices, however most of the things I was stoked about were in the purple plate ($7) category which adds up fast. I do like the idea that each plate only has about 4 pieces so that you can get a bigger variety if you so choose. However if you are set on getting your standard spicy tuna/spicy salmon ect... you might find yourself paying a bit more than a normal sushi place. The sushi itself was fine. I got the edamame and was disappointed in it since it was ice cold. I am used to edamame being warm/hot. The place had a lot of people in it which is great to see. One big downside is that the booths are not really body inclusive. I am plus size and felt really squished in the booths and feel like they could have adjusted the booth seats to be more size inclusive.

Yelp
I have only ever gotten delivery from here. Honestly. For being delivery sushi it comes thru in the clutch. I order the maki combo every time and it is consistently good. Can't go wrong with the rainbow roll, dragon roll, or alaska roll. Those are my personal faves. Rhe california roll from here is also satisfying. Whatever you specify they follow and do a great job with that. The mis soup is good, not great but good. I'll probably definitely order delivery from here again.

Yelp
My friends invited me to check out sushi train. Our group ended up bigger than we expected but the staff was super accommodating and kind. I love that the plate prices are listed on the wall as well as on the menus. There was a great variety from marinated baby octopus to the classic avocado or Philly rolls and fun options like the Mexican roll with jalapeno and cilantro. I love the moving picture wall and the place looks great! They also had a great deal going for free hot sake and they had a fun assortment of adorable sushi themed stickers! Great addition to the neighborhood!!

Yelp
Food is fine. Fun experience. DO NOT ORDER mixed drinks. This is not an old fashioned in anyone's experience

Yelp
I think I like this location better than the Nicollet location. Food is a little fresher, and the sushi wasn't mind blowing but you are there for the gimmick and there's a good selection of rolls (although they get pricey). The grabbing of plates off the track is easy enough (they are covered plates on a track), and you can order extra off the menu but we didn't. Drinkswise, I got the Osaka Martini and it was way too strong for me, so I'll stick with Sapporo in the future. Service was kind of lacking- we got sat in the corner and didn't have soy sauce on our table and it took a bit to flag someone down. However, it did pick up by the end, which is why the rating is a 4 instead of 3. The restaurant itself is clean and very pretty with a projection to set the "you're in Japan, kinda" vibe. There's also better parking than the downtown location. Overall, it's a fun spot- perfect if you are newer to sushi so you can sample. Gets a bit pricey with the a la cart, but I would return

Yelp
Food was good and the servers were very kind! We also saw someone dine and dash and that was interesting... But the staff handled it well! I definitely will be coming back!

Yelp
Love the little portions but it adds up. They are always adding new sushi to the menu so every time I go there seems to be a new roll they've introduced. Always great service. Love the ambiance and the atmosphere. Food is always made fresh. Each plate has a timer on it so it's never out too long.

Yelp
We came here for a date night. Our waitress was so kind and helpful with giving recommendations. This was a super fun experience and I would go back. They make the pricing very easy, it is pretty average cost wise for sushi trains I've been to. The food was yummy with lots of options.

Yelp
As soon as we walked in, it smelled like the sea. as a sushi restaurant would smell, but this one had a different aroma, and aroma of fish sitting out for hours on end our first couple plates were amazing until we decided to order entrées off the menu... The miso soup Ramen tasted like water and sea salt at most. They had no flavor. The egg served with it looked like it was out for at least three years. The bamboo shoots tasted like they had gone bad a month ago overall, the noodles were the best part they weren't even good. specifically, the Philadelphia roll was the worst. As soon as I entered my mouth my taste buds got the flavor of curdled milk after we finish the Ramen and our sushi. We decided to eat the Gyoza chicken to be specific. We could tell that it came from a frozen bag straight from Costco and it also tasted quite sour my pro tip. If you enjoy food that taste sour and Old this is a great choice of place to eat everything you will eat will taste old and sour just like it's in the back of your grandparents fridge.

Yelp
It's like its downtown cousin, but with easier parking! And I think slightly more attentive service. This is not the best sushi you'll ever have, but it's decent enough (people, we're thousands of miles from the ocean) and it is a GREAT place to go with kids because you have exactly zero wait for food and the conveyor belt is automatic entertainment. This is where we go when the kids earn a reward for good grades. Treat for them, good enough for the parents.

Yelp
Very delicious and fresh sushi. The people that work here are just so so nice. I'm always welcomed with a big smile (even got free sake!). Good variety of rolls. You can pick from the conveyer belt or order a la carte. They also have a couple of hot dishes. Parking is plentiful and location is nice. Restaurant is clean and well-maintained. Staff are just so nice and attentive. 10/10 recommend. Thank you Sushi Train :)

Yelp
Sushi tastes really good. But not much options for vegetarian..!!! One can get cooked sushi here..!! I especially liked their ambiance.

vanessa f.

Yelp
Great sushi for a great price. I didn't feel rushed either which is not always common with sushi train. Pretty quiet with nice service

Julia W.

Yelp
Good food, really fun concept, and very pleasant, attentive staff. The sushi was fresh and the flavors vivid. I love the inclusion of peanut butter and jelly roles for kids.

Shiroi A.

Yelp
A little spendy, but decent sushi! We went here a little over an hour before closing and they had "closed the kitchen", but were still willing to make anything specific if we wanted. We wound up eating from the conveyor and enjoyed the meal. I love that the booths feel private and the music isn't overly loud. The manager was very nice and checked on us a few times. Definitely recommend if you want some sushi!

Yelp
amazing experience every single time, staff is phenomenal and its cheap for the amount of food they provide.

Emily L.

Yelp
The sushi fell apart while I was trying to eat it. It was not rolled tight at all, and made it difficult to eat. It had good flavor, I can give it that. It was made fast - maybe a little too fast and delivered quickly.

Ash M.

Yelp
Great service! Sushi was fresh, fun to experience, reasonably priced and lots of variety, would definitely go back again, highly recommend the cakes for dessert

Yelp
I live a few blocks away and was excited for a well-priced sushi place open. Not only are the prices low in an ever-more expensive world, it's good quality and a lot of choices on the belt. And to top it off, our server Elizabeth was super tentative despite it being her 4th day. Would recommend to friends and family - will be my weekly sushi spot going forward!
google avatar

Harrison F.

Yelp
most of the rotary sushi was fresh, we had to ask the servers to heat up some of the dishes like edamame
