NYC New Restaurant Openings, December 2024 | Eater NY

"An additional outpost of an affordable, contentious but commercially successful “Australian-style” sushi concept that expanded after the West Village location provoked some clapback but kept drawing customers; the affordable, casual sushi format now has a presence on the other side of town." - Emma Orlow

Best omakase quality to price value we’ve had in NYC so far! We got the Premium omakase (it was so good we forgot to take a photo of every single piece 😅). Seasonings were unique and slight so you could really taste the fish. Fish was good quality and each piece of fish was surprisingly big. The sushi rice was excellent. We’ve enjoyed the cozy ambiance, all 12 seats are at the counter. No tip too, a big plus. We’ve been to many other omakase places in Manhattan at this price point and rate Sushi W the best. Apparently one of the few that is actually owned by a Japanese owner. The Chefs and hostess Irene were great and we had a fun conversation over some amazing nigiri and hand rolls. We’ll be back again soon! If you found this review give me a ❤️ thanks!

I’ve been to both this and the other outlet. The standard of the fish always stands out. You’ll have to choose which Omakase set you’re opting for when you enter. They have three: lunch, basic and premium, at different price points. I chose the premium both times. For the price, this is really a no frills dining experience, which I enjoy a ton! Unlike traditional Omakase experiences in Japan, or more high-end ones, the chef doesn’t speak much. The server, or front of house introduces the fish you’re eating. Other than that, there isn’t any backstory, which I don’t mind. It’s a steal for the lunch price. Everything is always fresh. I’ve been to other Omakase places in the city, and some of them incorporate a fusion style (chilli oil etc), which I’m not a fan of. Simplicity is key, and Sushi W does it well. Bonus point is no need to tip. Everything is inclusive. :-)

WOW! This place is truly special. Great service, delicious & fresh sushi, and good vibes (feels more traditional Japanese with more of their warm greetings than other more tacit and quiet omakase restaurants in the area). All for a good price-to-value. I went for the larger / premium omakase option (also next time I want to try their pre dinner happy hour) -- think it was totally worth it! Sake was solid and white wine was a Sauvignon Blanc. Can't wait to come back here many times (might become a regular favorite) 🍣💞🍣💞

I came here for dinner on a weekday and it was a good casual omakase experience. The interior of the restaurant has about 15-20 seats and it's cozy. We did the premium course, which consisted of 16 nigiri pieces and 2 handrolls for $68. Everything was very delicious and the fish to rice ratio wasn't bad. My favorite piece of the night was probably the ika, which I normally never like but they cut it in a unique way here that made it enjoyable. I love all of the pieces that I got, and thought that the experience itself was very fun (ie. when they poured ikura into a handroll you were holding). If it's your birthday, you also get a free tuna handroll, with a candle and everyone singing to you haha. The only thing that I disliked was that the whole experience felt very rushed (hence, the numerous sushi pieces piled up on my dish in the pictures). The whole omakase experience lasts about 50 minutes so keep that in mind. Overall, it was good sushi but I wish I didn't feel so rushed dining.

Came by with a friend for a fairly early Saturday dinner - they do seatings every hour, I think, so definitely show up on time for your reservations since they are prompt and efficient. (The whole meal was roughly 50 minutes or so). We both opted for the basic omakase set, which came with 12 nigiri pieces and 2 handrolls. I really enjoyed how the chef / staff would explain (cultural?) aspects like how to eat the nigiri, as well as explain the type of fish, where it was sourced from, etc. All the fish was so fresh and delicious, and the amount of food was perfectly satiating without feeling too stuffed. Price point at $53 for the basic set is a little crazy -- in a good way! esp for this quality -- and it was such a pleasant surprise at the end to learn they have a no-tipping policy (it's basically like getting another 18-30% "off" what you would have otherwise expected to pay... not sure how much the tipping standard is nowadays sigh) I think reservations are also not terribly hard to come by (esp if you plan ahead a bit) so I would highly recommend coming by for a visit (or to one of their other two locations) - I will definitely be back soon!

Google
Their prices are super reasonable for an omakase experience, and the fish is absolutely incredible! I love how they pair the omakase with simple ingredients that taste amazing. Right now, they’re offering a $10 discount on the premium dinner menu for the 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. sessions. We paid $58 per person for our dinner. You totally have to check them out!

Got the Lunch Omakase ($38 menu so $41.37 with tax) which consists of 10 nigiri and 2 handrolls. I forgot to take a photo of the Arctic Char but it came between the Ika Nigiri and Torotaku handroll. Starting off with what I disliked, I really did not like the Tilefish. It was the 3rd and last fish of the day and it was just so rubbery and chewy; did not like it at ALL. I also didn't care for the scallop piece because the wasabi completely overpowered it, which was disappointing because I actually really like scallop. My favorite piece was the Kampachi with basil on it, it was the only piece that I really went "wow" at. Everything else was either yummy or just "mhm okay" like it doesn't leave a lasting impression. Judging the omakase just by the pieces, I'd say I had a good time and it definitely gets extra points for the value.

Had a fantastic experience here. My wife and I had the lunch Omakase and an additional add on of uni. We’ve been in NY all week and this was easily our favorite dinning spot. All of the fish was fresh and fatty and the atmosphere was low lit, intimate and relaxing. If you are a fan of sushi i would make it a point to stop here, for the lunch omakase at a minimum.

Yelp
Omakase for 50-60 dollars--no tip... I am in love. The food was so so delicious and each course was well balanced in flavor. Occasionally the wasabi was a tad heavy handed but everything was so fressshhhh. Service was nice. The man serving us didn't make any small talk and the courses moved very fast, (you had to be out in an hour), but the hosts were amazing and food... again was great for the price. The place itself is super quaint and intimate. I really appreciated it. Very nice for two people. Maybe three. More than that and it gets a bit difficult to chat since the seating is bar style for the courses.

Yelp
This is the absolute best omakase deal in this town. My friend and I stopped in for their $38 lunch special which includes 10 pieces of sushi plus two handrolls. Sushi W is also a non tipping restaurant, so that is literally the price for an entire hour omakase experience. Every piece of sushi I had here was delicious -- fresh, flavorful, and inventive. The hand rolls were hearty without being too heavy on the rice. The menu included a mix of fresh fish including scallops, branzino, different types of tuna and salmon, Arctic char, etc. Each piece is already seasoned with just the right amount of soy sauce and wasabi, plus refreshing toppings on each that really elevated the freshness of the fish. The ambiance here feels elevated without being overly fancy. Throughout the experience the servers went above and beyond to explain each dish and check in to see if we wanted to order more drinks, or add additional dishes to our experience if we wanted. I'd recommend this place to anyone who loves omakase and wants to have a quality experience at a price you literally cannot beat.

Yelp
This was my first time having omakase, and I loved that it was only $53 with no tip. There were so many courses for such a good price. I liked how you could watch the chefs intricately make each piece, and it was a fun experience going with friends. The chefs always explained each dish, so I didn't get lost with the list of items. It is cozy, and you will definitely need a reservation.

Yelp
Sushi W is an incredible omakase experience. I've now tried both the premium and the basic omakase (most recently without the sake pairing), and both were outstanding. Every dish was exceptionally fresh and had great flavor. The staff is attentive and informative, thoughtfully introducing each course. If you're in the East Village craving top-notch sushi that's also extremely affordable, this is your answer.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place and I loved it. We managed to make a same day reservation although I recommend booking in advance. The interior was super cute and the service was extremely attentive. They explained each round as we went. You can order more food if you don't think it'll be enough, but we were quite full by the end of it. You can also pair with sake or other alcoholic drinks. Prices were really reasonable it was around $60 per person. They had very delicious and unique combinations. I will 100% be back with a friend to impress.

Yelp
I've been to the other sushi W location for their lunch omakase and enjoyed my experience! I was so excited for a sushi w to open closer to the city! The staff was extremely friendly and I liked how they announced the nigiri piece + where the fish was sourced from. They were also attentive to my water and constantly refilled my water cup. The nigiri itself was pretty standard / mediocre to me. Nothing really stood out too much from the pieces, not too much in terms of flavor or creativity. The pieces did seem a little smaller than I expected but still, the fish to rice ratio was good! My favorite nigiri piece was the charred salmon. Usually, my favorite is scallop but honestly, the scallop here didn't impress me. But in terms of value, it was pretty good. There's a no tipping policy! There's also a -$10 promotion on certain days and times of the week. The premium set ended up being $63 after tax for 17 courses in total. Overall: affordable omakase, friendly staff, but sushi itself was quite mediocre

Yelp
Grateful that my partner honored and entertained my spontaneity for a "last minute omakase decision" on a Saturday night in NYC. While we found Sushi W on a whim, we are hooked and thinking "why didn't we know about Sushi W sooner??" We loved every bite and didn't even realize it was only an hour experience, let alone the last seating of the night. There's a set of appetizers, small bites, and drinks available on their pre-dinner menu for those who arrive early. I love this concept. We went for the premium menu which let us have some premium nigiri (which was urchin) and extra fish of the day. Our fishes of the day were Branzino, Yellowtail, and Fluke. The branzino was one of my favorites, along with the chutoro, and the torched salmon with truffle. We went HAM when it was time for the nigiri a la carte time and it was very affordable pricing for the a la carte. I'm drooling as I look back on these photos as well. The staff was friendly and greeting customers as this was the newest location of Sushi W, known for its other locations in Manhattan and East Harlem. This was a bonus as the owner, Yong Sa, was also joining the chefs behind the counter. What a nice touch to the evening! My partner doubted my ability to find a seat so late in the evening without planning ahead, we thank fate and luck that we got the last seating and got to try Sushi W. We frequent East Village a lot and can't wait to come back!

Yelp
The omakase here was stellar for the price which includes tip and tax. We did the deluxe option offering 16 nigiris and 2 hand rolls for 68 dollars. They offer 10 dollars off if you come for Monday - Thursday 5 or 9pm seating I would put it at the same caliber/quality as Shinn east/west, thirteen water, sushi by M, however, it's even better due to the price and the few unique fish of the day options. I find the cheaper one hour options have way more fatty tuna courses but Sushi W offered unique options like branzino. Service was attentive and the space was big with ample ventilation. We would come back for an easy more affordable omakase experience.

Yelp
I found this lovely gem and couldn't wait to share! The sushi here is so fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. Some standout pieces were the marinated tuna, amberjack with pesto, and the branzino with lemon zest--such amazing flavors. The medium fatty tuna was another highlight, especially with the soy sauce and sea salt variations, but it's only available with the premium dinner option. There are two omakase options: Standard Omakase for $53 and Premium Omakase for $68. Both are worth it, depending on how much you want to indulge. Other delicious bites included the Arctic char with sweet onion, uniquely prepared squid, and the seared salmon with mild truffle powder--so good! If you're feeling extra, you can order two appetizers, which come with a free drink (sake or beer)--a fun little perk! Seating is limited, and they turn tables quickly (one hour seating). Good for those have much to do and see in the city. if you arrive first, you'll get the best seats in the house. They also have a no tipping policy just like Japan!

Yelp
My friends and I came here for dinner and loved it!! Sooo worth the price - you get 17 pieces for $68 only and we were honestly quite full. Every sushi was made with such precision and was great quality. You can only fit like 15 people in here at once so it almost felt more intimate. Definitely highly recommend.

Yelp
Haven't had omakase in a while and this hit the spot and was fine. Was it stellar or super memorable? No. The price is super reasonable for lunch ($38 without any add-ons, we also got one of the $53 to add ikura and uni). We sat closer to the chef which is the way to go as we got everything first and were able to watch him make it. I'm a sucker for torched sushi, so that was my favorite. I didn't feel like any of the flavoring was that interesting or varied, unfortunately. I wish everything had had ever so slightly more wasabi to kick up the flavoring somewhat. But the meal flowed nicely and went quickly. I will say I left a bit hungry but for the price can't really fault the menu.

Yelp
First time trying Omakase here and it did not disappoint! The price is great compared to other spots, offering value. They have two options, Basic and Premium and I went with the Basic, which only excludes three items from the full selection. I loved all the options given, everything just melts into your mouth. The wine was also reasonably priced and paired beautifully with the meal. The chef and staff were clearly knowledgeable and skilled. Interaction with the chef is minimal, which makes it a great setting for catching up with friends or chatting with others around. The space is small and cozy, adding to the intimate, relaxed vibe. Highly recommend for a quality Omakase experience without the hefty price tag.

Yelp
Norovirus May Be Served Fresh! Excitedly wandered in for the first time, drawn in by prices so good they practically whispered, "this can't end well." Blissfully unaware, I scarfed down the meal, feeling like I'd struck the dining jackpot. Fast forward to 5 AM, and surprise! Norovirus crashed the party. Picture me, head over toilet, regretting every life choice in 20-minute increments for hours. Am I 100% sure it was from here? Let's just say I'm not eager for round two and not going to risk it. Eat here if you're feeling lucky--or just stick to playing lottery tickets. Your stomach will thank you.

Yelp
Sushi W on 13th is amazing. We've been at least 4 times since it opened, bring whoever we could. The price is unbeatable and the sushi is delicious. Quick and efficient, the staff is very friendly. Simple and no-frills, you get a lovely meal. The three pieces; truffle, basil, and the short rib are always a a la carte buy at the end of the meal for us!

Yelp
I haven't wrote a yelp review in a while but our chef Francis was so sweet! Came here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and got the premium omakase for both of us. The ambience was great and they gave him an extra piece with a candle on top and sang happy birthday to him! Would come back again for sure.
