Sushisen

"Two smart dining rooms offer two different dining experiences at this restaurant: one with chairs at the bar and a conveyer belt of traditional Japanese dishes; the other serving contemporary Japanese cuisine, including the intriguing Omakase tasting menu. Nearly all the wines and sakes on the wine list are also available by the glass." - Michelin Inspector

So much fun. The sushi was fresh and tasty. I'll agree with a previous reviewer that the premium dishes are not necessarily worth the premium. We went as soon as it opened, but it filled up quickly, so maybe make a reservation if you are going to go later. The staff was friendly, helpful and professional. It's made our "When in Rome..." rotation list.

Good variety of fish, high quality. It's easy to spend too much. I spent €126, including a €29 wagyu tartare, for one person, no drinks. Perhaps I should have gotten the €90 omakase instead. The expensive dishes aren't worth it. Best to stick to basics like salmon, scallop, uni.

I went with my son to have fun at the sushi train seating and it was a sucess The food is tasty, the conveyor belt ia fun, service is friendly, wine list is good. This part of tge restaurant is good for families, kids, friends but also couples. There is a more sophisticated part of the restaurants where i would not reccomend taking kids - for the omakase experience, looks very nice too

One of the best sushi restaurants in Rome! The food was delicious every single time, the atmosphere is very peaceful and authentic, the staff is friendly and kind. Definitely recommend it!

Lovely conveyor belt seating, great variety of japanese specialties. Service was lovely as well. For a change from Pasta in Rome, Sushisen is the place to be.

Google
Excellent service, friendly staff, and a knowledgeable sommelier. Arrived at lunch time and practically had the inner room to ourselves. The omakase options were flexible and worth getting extras, if you wish. While it wasn't entirely sushi, I was very happy with the dishes presented. The fish were fresh and the presentation contributed to the wow-factor. Simply amazing. Aside from the service, the restaurant was very clean and has heated seats in some bathrooms.

Perfectoritto! 🌟 Have been craving for a good Japanese meal and decided to have one for our last dinner in our honeymoon trip - glad that we chose the best possible one in Rome 😊 ⏰ having open at 7.30pm, we arrive at 7.15pm and was asked if we had a reservation, when shared that we didn’t, the service staff immediately registered us for a counter seat and shared expectations that we have to finish our meal by 9.15pm - ample time for us! Ordered quite a bit of stuff from the iPad since I was allergic to fish and the tablet gives English description of the dishes 😊 🫖 ordered some tea to cleanse our palate from the sweet and oily stuff - and was shown the selection of tea! Went with the Hojicha since that’s my favourite. Love nest - very good appetiser, even better presentation! Scallops were really fresh and was very well balanced with the rest of the ingredients. 🍣 salmon were really fresh, both the sashimi and the fried variant of it 🍤 the tempura was one of the freshest fried prawn I have ever tasted, coupled with the sauce that’s provided, it was out of the world! The sushi roll was one of the best we ever had too, crunch on the outside and flavourful on the inside - it’s truly a must order outside of those that’s on the conveyor! 🐖 the Katsu-don suits those who love their fatty meat, as it’s the first time I have had a pork cutlet that’s not entirely lean meat (comes with some fatty components) - probably the only dish I don’t absolutely love Despite a higher price tag than other meals out there, at 89 Euros for 2 pax, it’s well worth every cent for such a high quality meal. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves their Japanese food 👍🏻🏆

Omakase menu was by far the best japanese proposition I've ever had (and I've had a lot, visiting those kinds of restaurants everywhere I go). The subtle and pefect mix of tastes in each small dish, topped with amazing presentation deserve 3 Michelin stars. But to get those the approach to guest would have to be slightly improved. Once you are inside - service is impecable. But if your reservation is for 7:30 pm and your are unfortunate to get earlier, you are kept on the pavement in 35 degrees heat, as they open their dors at exaclty 7:30. Unacceptable for this level of restaurant. They should either open 15 min. earlier and offer a drink while waiting or make reservations for slightly later hour, like 7:45. There was no Limoncello available, even though it is on the menu. Small thing but again - for Michelin recommended place it should not happen. I would actually send someone to the nearest store, it's not a 30years old champagne. So overall - for food - big yes. Service and atmosphere must be slightly improved to rich same level of perfection.

Yelp
Look, I didn't come all the way to Rome expecting to have one of the best sushi meals I've had in years--but Sushisen absolutely delivered. We grabbed seats at the rotating bar (kaiten style), and let me just say that if you're someone who loves watching food go by like it's an edible runway show, this is your jam. Plate after plate of beautifully crafted nigiri, maki, and fresh bites just glide past you, and you can take whatever catches your eye. It's a low-pressure, high-satisfaction way to eat. Nothing felt mass-produced--everything tasted carefully made, with that clean, precise flavor you hope for in sushi. Our favorites were the salmon belly nigiri, which was buttery and rich without being overwhelming. The shrimp tempura roll had the perfect crunch-to-soft-rice ratio. And the spicy tuna had just enough kick to keep it interesting without trying too hard. Even the wasabi felt dialed in--not a sinus assault, just a smart accent. And whoever's in charge of plating back there clearly respects the artform. These plates aren't just tasty--they're a little bit elegant. The interior manages to feel sleek and modern while still being cozy. And since we were seated at the counter we got to watch the chefs at work which was a true highlight. Quiet craftsmanship, no fuss, just focus and intention. Staff were kind and helpful, and while I didn't sample the sake or wine (for religious reasons), the servers never made it weird. Just warm, professional hospitality all around. Pro tip: Sit at the bar, go with an open mind, and trust your eyes. If it looks good, it is good. And maybe skip breakfast--you'll want room for more plates than you think.

Yelp
[In retrospect: A bit of an issue here between platforms. This is actually a dimly-lit, sexy, high-end Japanese place where the photos here make it look like a run-of-the-mill sushi spot] With the stellar reviews, impressive menu, and Michelin recommendation, I thought Sushisen would be a great choice as something to break up the onslaught of traditional Italian food. Though the food service was seamless and the food was really good across the board, the hospitality and immersion you'd expect at this price point was non-existent to us as English speakers. Interactions with waitstaff (aside from the Som) were stiff and we received no introduction to the menu or restaurant or ordering process, no follow-ups on drinks or satisfaction with food, and no explanations of what we were being served (for example, what was contained in the sashimi sampler). Even the iPad menu, which was clunky, didn't have full translations from Italian to English when selecting the English language option. I admit that this isn't fair feedback if we were to just wander into a restaurant in a neighborhood outside the main tourist areas of Rome, but the praise heaped upon this restaurant is quite eye-catching and we would not have dined here if we were aware of the language barrier.

Yelp
Excellent high-class sushi place in Ostiense where they take the representatives of the Japanese embassy. Go during lunch where the plates are half-price! Otherwise, be prepared to drop a good amount of cash.

Yelp
It's a big restaurant with a large menu and a sushi conveyor belt! The food is beautiful. The conveyor belt, however tempting it is to take food from there, is something I don't recommend for your main course! Everything is VERY expensive off that. I'd say pick a main course off the menu and then one thing off the belt just for the experience. Also: the sushi is delicious with all the sauces and what not, however they put a huge amount of rice and I had to cut all my sushi prices in half because no one can fit sushi of that size in their mouth- and if they can they're not enjoying it. But other than that everything was great. I even took something off the belt and ended up not likening it at all and when I told the waiter he didn't even charge me for it! Probably not gonna come back because I just came for the experience but over all great place!!

Yelp
Based on the positive recommendations of local Yelpers, we headed, exhausted, to get some takeout at Sushiyen. I'd have liked to eat a full meal there but it'd been a long few days. If you want me to cut to the chase here it is: this is really good sushi at average prices - it seems the reviews are merited and the crowd of people waiting in line to get in are also a good indicator. For takeout, you order at the cash and wait near the door, which is pretty crowded. Service is not super fast, so it would be smarter to phone in the order. There was a long line up of guests waiting to eat at the conveyer belt, while the restaurant tables were mostly reserved. We got our long awaited sushi and ate in our rented apartment (thanks air b&b). The quality of the nori and the rice cooking is perfect, and the fish is super fresh. We just had a small assortment of maki so I can't comment on the other dishes, but I'd judge this to be amongst the top sushi I have had in Italy (consider that I eat it frequently in Florence).

Yelp
Everytime I went there, there is a long line, but it really worth waiting. The sushi is very genuine Japanese style.

Yelp
This is my favourite sushi place in Rome. The food is very good, excellent quality and innovative ingredients added to the classics. The restaurant is nice, but laid back and it is reasonably priced. I usually sit at the tapis because I like to be tempted by what goes around, but choices a la carte are really good.

Yelp
I went here two times in two weeks for lunch. Everything is 3 euro which is a GREAT deal for this AMAZING place. It's one of the very good sushi place I had(yes I've been to Japan multiple times and had both Michelin star and street side restaurants)

Yelp
Wow... Just incredible! Who would have known the best ramen I've ever had would be in Rome. The atmosphere at sushisen is great, food is authentic and flavorful, and the staff is helpful and funny. You MUST visit here when you are nearby, but make your reservations early! The sushi bar is open everyday, but the other dining is only by reservation. On Saturday I tried to make a reservation for later that evening, but they were fully booked until Thursday and rightly so!

Yelp
The excellent quality of the food here is undeniable. I am a sushi fan and I really recommend this restaurant. It's located near the Piramide metro stop ( from Termini it's metro B - Laurentina direction) and has a very stylish modern design. The price is average for sushi restaurants in Italy and the portions are good. You can either choose the sushibar option or just pick a normal table. I haven't tried dessert but I can guarantee for the rest of the food.

Yelp
When you live a 75 minute flight away the question is not 'Why go to Rome?' it's 'Why don't we go to Rome more often?' So on a recent weekend trip I grabbed an early dinner at Sushisen based on the strength of its Yelp reviews (as I had not eaten here before). Quick Summary: It's great, good service, good food and good value, so go. Now the longer version: There is a selection of Kaisen seating and tables. The tables filled quickly so I assume they were reserved. If you want to seat quickly then get there when it opens, or be prepared to stand and wait. I ate alone and got there ten minutes before it opened, along with about twenty others on a Saturday night, so was seated immediately. Despite the fact I was alone (and therefore had an empty seat next to me as they counted on seating a couple) they were perfectly hospitable and I was sat and watched the Kaisen fill up quickly. As well as the food on the Kaisen there is a menu for other items and I quickly ordered some cold Soba noodles and a 300ml bottle of Dai Ginjo Sake. They have a decent selection of 300ml sake, one of the better selections I've seen outside of London. The noodle choices are very good as well, Soba and Udon in multiple options. I chose cold Soba with dipping sauce and they were very good, the noodles tasted fresh and the dipping sauce was very flavourful. The Soba came with lots of excellent Wasabi which was great as I had started to use Wasabi out of little sachets on the table and it was pretty poor. Some of the Kaisen selections also had the same Wasabi so make sure to ask for some rather than use that awful packet stuff. As I had a light coloured shirt on (and I was sat so close to the people on one side of me) I neglected to 'slurp' my Soba for fear of spots on my shirt. I didn't take shots of the food as I was in close proximity to other diners and felt a little silly, presentation was excellent though. After the noodles I turned my attention to the Kaisen selection. Usually I eat Sashimi and Nigiri and avoid rolls (rarely eat them) and the more inventive (i.e. poor) selections. However there were a very tempting selection of interesting items on the belt. You might want to check out the menu in advance as I didn't have much time to check out the selections as they went past. Towards the end of the meal, after gorging on excellent Sashimi and Nigiri I tried the yaki karaage (crispy fried chicken) as I saw it go onto the belt fresh from the kitchen. Many times this dish is dry as the chicken is over cooked. This version was incredible, the pieces of chicken had some fat on them which had caramelized during cooking and the pieces came in a lightly applied pistachio sauce. This dish was just incredible, I had two portions, the second was also good but not as good as the first so get them when they are hot. Between these two orders of chicken I ordered some Uni from the Waiter, again this was just excellent and the quality of the Sea Urchin just shone through. I ate the Chicken and Sea Urchin dishes with a second Sake, this time an unfiltered one which was milky (of course) and slightly sweet and really enjoyable. My total bill was just under 100 Euros, which when you consider I spent 45 on Sake and had eaten more than your average diner would that is excellent value (a large meal for 55 Eurors of soba, chicken, Uni, two mixed sashimi plates of 6 pieces each and multiple pieces of Nigiri) Honestly there are a number of decent Sushi options in Rome but this one is excellent value, loads of fun with great quality fish, rice and service. I shall go back for sure.
