The Best Bakeries in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Süss (pronounced “soose”) marks the brick-and-mortar debut of pastry chef Jasmin Smith, whose precise, flavor-forward baked goods first earned a following through fruit pockets sold out of her apartment kitchen and later at the Uptown Farmers Market. The shop now anchors a bright corner on 7th Avenue, where Smith draws from her German homeland and Arizona upbringing in equal measure. Her signature fruit pockets — somewhere between a pop tart and a hand pie — come filled with seasonal jams, layered with ingredients like prickly pear, mesquite flour, or local dates. The pastry case rotates regularly but might hold bacon scones with onion jam, chorizo-stuffed hand pies, or pillowy brioche buns. Every item is baked in-house and served in a space that’s small but cohesive — much like the pastries themselves." - McConnell Quinn

Such a hidden gem. Looked inside the Orangewood Estates at the corner of B Missouri and 7th avenue. Cute decor and smells magical inside. Jasmine, the owner greeted us immediately with a smile. All the food was made to order and delicious!! I had the Rotating Veggie quiche… spinach and leek. Delicious!! The opener also gifted my best friend with a free dessert off her choice…. The chocolate chip hibiscus cookie is ❤️.

I was in the uptown area and checked my map, saw that I was nearby so I decided to go and check this place out for the first time (certainly won't be my last, that's fasho!). I was greeted in a warm and friendly manner by Jessica and Jasmin as I walked in. I looked at what was available and made my selections. I started with the raspberry prickly pear fruit pocket, which had a vibrant and tangy filling, wrapped in a tender and buttery pastry that was simply delightful. The cinnamon date muffin was what I tasted next, and it felt like a comforting warm hug in baked form, perfectly spiced, soft, and for a muffin, it wasn't very dense which was nice. Then I tried the chorizo and egg pocket, which was very flaky, buttery!!!, and flavourful. The eggs were soft and well cooked, the beef chorizo was well spiced and had a nice mouth feel, and the cheese melded everything together beautifully. The sautéed onions, green chilli, and peppers added just the right touch of savouriness and a light sweetness, and a bit of Tapatio on top elevated it even further. The corn blueberry honey cake offered a lovely contrast with its moist texture and gentle sweetness, complemented by fresh blueberries and a smooth frosting. As someone who spent a decent amount of their childhood in the South eating cornbread, this felt nostalgic with a bit of a refreshing and elevating twist. Before leaving, I decided I wanted one more thing to go. I told Jasmin, the owner, she could choose for me, baker’s choice! She chose the lemon curd cookie, and it ended up being the perfect way to wrap up this experience because when i got home and tried it, all i could do was smile and nod my head in approval. The cookie had what i presume is a sugar cookie base. The lemon curd was bright, tart, slightly eggy in the best way. The cookie overall was incredibly balanced. The flavour ratios throughout everything I had were meticulously spot on, with just the right harmony between sweet, savoury, tart, and spice. Everything I had was fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and most importantly, made with love! I will definitely be back... It's worth going out of your way to come here to treat yourself to some delicious baked goods.

Want to spoil your taste buds and warm your heart??? This is the place to come. I've been eating these "pop tarts" for years now and they always bring me joy. The honey pecan cookie is perfectly balanced with sweetness, butter, and salt. Your tastes buds and heart will thank you!!!

I found this place through the Too Good To Go app and I'm so glad I did! I got an assortment of beautiful pastries and have already devoured the raspberry jalapeno scone, which was divine. I am excited to go back and try more!

Google
Stopped by the store today and picked up some of the tastiest pastries we've had in a long time. Wow. Tried the blueberry cobbler and green chile bressanes, a couple of the pockets (date brown sugar, raspberry prickly pear), a scone, and a muffin. Everyone at home enjoyed everything but that green chile bressane is ridiculously good. Super helpful, warm, friendly service. We were there around 6:30 so no waiting at all. Easy to park for free out front, too. Worth going out of your way for. We'll definitely return!

Google
Suss Pastries has become a regular stop for me at the Uptown Farmers Market, thanks to their incredible corn sugar cookies. They’re addictive, striking the perfect balance between salty and sweet. Really you can’t go wrong! I'm so happy to see them opening a storefront location. If you're nearby, make sure to swing by and grab a treat.

Süss pastries is the best around! I love the flavor combinations, everything is always very fresh and delicious. Jasmine and Jessica are super welcoming.! They also have great options for gluten-free.

Google
Brilliant. Delicious. Perfection of a hand pastry. They reinvented fruit pockets! Some may remember an over-processed, bland-crusted, light-on-filling, rectangular, breakfast-on-the-go, food product. Suss’ handmade take completely elevates its sorry cousin to a joyful indulgence. The crust could be your grandma’s and there’s no shortage of flavorful filling. You won’t be able to decide which creative flavor to pick, so get a few to cut up and share…just don’t put them in the toaster! lol You’ll find Suss in a shared space with two other great, local food businesses on the SE corner of 7th Ave. and Missouri.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with Suss and everything Jasmine and her team creates! I was first introduced to Suss Pastries at my local coffee shop Driftwood. From the fruit pockets (pop tarts), cookies, muffins, but my top 2 favorites are the pumpkin loaf. I could eat a whole pan of that lol and her strawberry corn loaf. Honestly, everything here has been amazing and I will always support a small business over a chain any day of the week! Can't wait to see what specials she pops up with next!

Yelp
I've tried their pockets ("pop tarts") at other cafes and when I saw them pop up in the Too Good To Go app, I knew I had to snag a bag. I stopped by one weekday morning around 8am. 7th ave and 7th st get confusing with the reverse middle lane and no left turns at certain times. With that being said, I made it here okay and parked in front of their storefront. They share an entrance with a restaurant and they are on the right when you enter. The staff member gave me my box when I showed her my order and I peeked inside before I left. I got 4 pockets: 2 date brown sugar, 1 strawberry hibiscus, 1 blueberry lime. I was excited to get these! I tried them when I got home and really enjoyed the blueberry and strawberry ones. The date one was nice but too sweet for me, I prefer the sour flavors. Great value, delicious, and a good way to fight food waste and support local business. Win win!

Yelp
The pastries are incredible at this place! If you go please try the poptarts every flavor I've tried I LOVE! Even the vegan ones are incredible which is not an easy thing to achieve. I've had their pastries at a few of the local coffee shops around Phoenix and I'm so excited to have found where they're made. It's spotless and attached to Corner on the Market (super good baked goods and good with seating) and Hatch It (which has an amazing breakfast). Good place for a date night or to take friends.

Yelp
Saw this place on IG and immediately wanted to try. I rolled up early on a Saturday morning blabbering to the owner and she was just so sweet lol I got a prickly pear raspberry fruit pocket, date & brown sugar pocket, corn sugar cookie, guava linter cookie, and the chocolate cake with horchata mousse and espresso frosting. The fruit pockets were good! A little on the sweet side for me but good nonetheless. My kids enjoyed them. My mom devoured the guava cookie. I love that it is dedicated to AZ and is just so cute! The corn sugar cookie was good and unique. The cake was amazing! Not too sweet. I am a mousse girly through and through so having a HORCHATA mousse?! HEAVEN. My heart was so happy. Cute shop, great service, amazing product.

Yelp
It took a bit to find them, but glad we did. I had to try the brown sugar date poptart, delicious. Very limited searing indoors but luckily it wasn't terribly hot outside. This Corner Market is a pretty cool little place. Service was a team slow, it was just one gal and she looked like she was cooking and serving.

Yelp
I tried Suss when they were back on 16th st. I don't know why I didn't leave a review. It he poptarts are so yum yum I found them again now on 7th ave next To hatch it and only a he location has changed those poptarts are so good! I'd love to try more of their pastries in the future

Yelp
Go go go!! Suss is a local gem with an amazing, sweet owner and awesome handmade pastries. You can't go wrong with any of their pockets (their take on a pop tart), but my favorite is the brown sugar date! It'll remind you of those nostalgic childhood ones you grew up but on steroids. Her cake slices are also very tasty, cookies, bars, etc. Highly highly highly recommend trying the unassuming corn cookie ... it may look simple but if you like salty and sweet, this is for you!

Yelp
Picked up a box of pastries as a gift. It's a show stopper/crowd pleaser. Excellent customer service, delicious variety, 10/10 creativity - highly recommended. Local gem.

Yelp
I tried my first fruit pocket from Suss Pastries at a Yelp event at Window Coffee Bar. It was a large blueberry lime fruit pocket bursting with blueberry marmalade and topped with white frosting that had a subtle lime flavor and some lime rind. It was so delicious! I was downtown today and we didn't have any sweets at home, so I decided to stop by the actual bakery and pick up some treats. The pastry shop is located inside Corner On The Market, a spot with a very nice seating area including booths and tables with high back soft dining chairs, an area to order wood-fired pizzas, a bread bakery and a full cafe. There are refrigerated wall doors with beer and alcohol and refrigerated cases with food to-go items. There is a restroom as well. This market is attached to a highly rated Hatch Chile burger and taco spot, Hatch-It. Some Chocolate chip cookies had just come out of the oven before I walked in and I asked if I could have six of those. I also ordered one of each of the fruit pockets available: Blueberry Lime, Date Brown Sugar, Raspberry Prickly Pear, and Peach Honey. My daughter just tried the Raspberry Prickly Pear Fruit Pocket and said it was very good. Hubs, who is a chocolate chip cookie connoisseur, just tried a cookie and was nodding while he chewed. He said these were good cookies. I tried the Date Brown Sugar Fruit Pocket and it was very tasty. My favorite is still Blueberry Lime though!

Yelp
Incredibly delicious pastries! I've tried the date and horchata raspberry pockets and both were amazing. Can't wait to try more.

Yelp
This is the source of all of those homemade pop tarts that I've been seeing around town!! This place is only open on Saturday AM (though their pop tarts are sold at several nearby coffee shops if you are craving a pop tart at any other time). They make several different varieties that are all delicious. They also make a couple kinds of savory pop tarts. I was on a pop tart kick, so I bought one of each flavor to try. So tasty!

Sarah J.

Yelp
WOW!! I got an assortment of pastries today and they are all so amazing!!! I now have a go-to Bakery!! Lemon Lavender cookies are to die for! The Apple Brie scone is the PERFECT blend of sweet and savory. Made a sandwich with their fresh baked sourdough and it was perfect! Crusty on the outside and soft and tasty on the inside. Can't wait to try the rest!

Yelp
Hands down my fave pop tarts. I love that they are local and I can walk into so many shops around the valley if I can't make it to Phoenix. Always so full of fruit with a flaky and perfect outside. Yum!

Yelp
I was blown away by this Bakeshop. I needed a last minute cake and had been wanting to try this bakery but saw they were closed. I decided to reach out anyway on a Saturday afternoon for cake on a Monday. They were able to accommodate this and she even helped me pick out the flavor, was responsive and accommodating. The cake I went with I probably wouldn't have chosen (but it was for someone else) chocolate tres leches. It's not at all the soaked cake I was imagining... and I was super pleasantly surprised. I'm not a big chocolate fan and it wasn't overwhelming, was the perfect balance and they layer filling was more like a "3 milk" caramel--amazing. Also not overly sugary sweet. Topped with a vanilla buttercream and chocolate ganache. I had the cake cold and at room temp, both were perfect. My friend loved her birthday cake and how beautiful it was. I'm so thankful they could accommodate last minute. As I showed up, the store front was actually closed on Monday and they still made it happen. I couldn't be more impressed. Will definitely order from here again.

Yelp
A friend brought in a box of pastries to work and they were DELICIOUS!! I tried two different savory items-- so, so good. I can't wait to go to the bakery itself one weekend to try a few more treats. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
Suss makes some very tasty pastries! They're known for their pop tarts, which are fairly unique and flavorful. They also have tasty cookies and baked goods. One time, at their location on 16th, I had a great avocado toast as well. Check them out!

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE the fruit pockets! One of my favorite treats ever!! the combo of the fruity center and flaky crust is amazing.

Jen L.

Yelp
Love their goodie bags. Try to pick them up as often as I can for some sweet treats! Hidden gem and the bakers/chefs are kind and accomodating.

Mike H.

Yelp
These are the best gluten free pastries ever! Way better than any pop tart. Fresh fruit inside is delicious. I was so glad to have stumbled upon Suss Pastries at the farmers market. We buy them frequently. My favorite is the raspberry prickly pear!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Rueben pastries! And great choco chip cookie! The dough is like no other. You can tell everything is from scratch and made fresh.

Susan R.

Yelp
The pastries are delicious! I especially love the pop tarts! So many different and unusual flavors that are delicious!

Yelp
Most of my family is gluten free and so we tried their gluten free pop tarts and the verdict was... they are TO DIE FOR! We have had the date and sugar plum (I think this was a special Xmas flavor) and both were EXCELLENT! My daughter insisted on taking samples to her roommate in LA who eats gluten free - now she can't wait to come back to Phoenix to get more GF pop tarts. My son, who is NOT GF, could not tell that these were GF. GF or not, you will LOVE the pop-tarts. We can't wait to sample the rest of the menu! ...they were devoured so quickly that I didn't have a chance to take photos. :(

Chelsey G.

Yelp
Suss pastries is hands down the most delicious bakery I have ever experienced. I first found them at a local coffee shop and had to ask the owners where they acquired their baked goods. Once I did that, I was a locked in, loyal customer forever. My favorite pocket is the Brown Sugar Date, I love how flaky the crust is and the frosting on top is to die for!! I also love their cheesecakes and their cinnamon rolls. You can't go wrong with any of their baked goods!! 10/10 delicious!

Hanna N.

Yelp
This is the second cake I have ordered from Suss and both have completely exceeded my expectations I first heard about Suss when I saw their pop tarts around town in coffee shops and when I saw they did cakes I knew I had to try one! This cake was a gluten free marble with chocolate mousse, mesquite tres leches, and brown butter cream cheese frosting. PHENOMENAL. I didn't even get a chance to take a photo of our first cake before it was devoured! Jasmin is so helpful and accommodating, the process was so easy, and the price is so reasonable for both the quality and quantity. Thank you for making my mom's birthday so special!

Yelp
Really enjoy their pastries and weekend bake sales. They're located within Modern Harvest, which is a bit of a jaunt for me, but the goodies they make are SO worth it! The only "complaint" I have is that they're not open all the time and I have to duke it out at local coffee shops to snag one of their treats lol

Gissel G.

Yelp
This is the 2nd time I buy pastries that where made by Suss pastries and you guys it is so sad that when mentioning it to her she was rude and unapologetic really I also have proof of that this is a piece of plastic inside the ham why is there plastic idk point is I give my daughter (14) months old everything I eat I almost choked on this string the first time and I still decided to give her another chance and this is still happening pls check your food you might be eating plastic !

Yelp
This place is a dream! Incredible breakfast sandwich and the BEST pastry selection in the city. Do not miss this place.

Yelp
This place just opened up and it's so cute and the pastry selection is devine. You have to try the poptart flavors. There's something for everyone. Plus the local artist wall is perfect for gifts or something for yourself.

Yelp
The cupcakes we ordered for my brothers wedding reception (red velvet) were amazing! But even more important was Jasmines amazing customer service and her willingness to go above and beyond to make sure we still had our cakes for the night! After a mix up in delivery and the fear of us not having our treats Jasmine came through and brought them back after she closed her shop and we still had our delicious treats! Seriously! ABOVE AND BEYOND customer service, and an amazing product!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Grabbed a few treats this am, yummy! Great service and the pastries were divine! Hubby said I need to try everything on the menu

Jacqueline D.

Yelp
They're breakfast sandwich and strawberry cheesecake pop-tarts were to die for! Sooooooo good! My husband and I are so glad we found this spot! The owner and staff were super nice. We will definitely be coming back for more!!
