Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northern Michigan for Viewing Fall Leaves - Eater Detroit

"Perched on the highest bluff along aptly named Hilltop Road, Suttons Bay Ciders offers one of the best views in Leelanau County. And what better thing to drink during an autumn visit than crisp, hard cider? Order the Cherry Fest, also known as the Don Cherrya blend of local apples and a not-too-sweet smidge of cherry juice. It screams Michigan Fruit Belt." - Stacey Brugeman

I dropped by Suttons Bay Ciders a bit before they were officially open, but the owner was there and welcomed me in. He was very friendly, and the place looked quite nice. I was able to sample several of their ciders in a flight and enjoyed them on the patio overlooking the bay. The view is wonderful, and the ciders were excellent. This is definitely a good place to stop if you like cider and want a great view of the west bay, and it’s worth the trip.

Google
Ten stars forever! But kind of using this review as a suggestion box to make an already amazing place ever better :) Suttons Bay Ciders is a permanent fixture in our Up North routine, and genuinely one of my favorite places in the world. We come up from Detroit several times a year, and it’s the #1 thing we look forward to. The view over the bay is stunning, as is the cider (we always leave with growlers of Ginger and Sidra for our Lo Rogers. Also gotta get the cherry slush, when it’s in season—YUM.), and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. We’ve caught full moon rises, watched the fall colors roll in, met the kindest people across the bonfire, sang The Edmund Fitzgerald in unison with perfect strangers, and always try to get Gordy the dog to love us. Too many memories to count. Okay now for the suggestion: Please consider moving the porta potty 🙏 We usually camp out in that corner of the property with our dog because it’s one of the more low key spots. Hearing the door slam, getting the occasional whiff—it kinda kills the magic. Especially now that y’all serve pizza, it’s not the most appetizing to eat next to. Maybe I’m picky! Totally get the hillside issue, but a raised pad in the parking lot (or somewhere further from the hang spots) would go a long way. All that said: we’ll be back again and again to this very special place no matter what. Much love ❤️

Google
Beautiful place to have delicious ciders and other drinks. The views of the bay off the deck and through the bar windows is amazing! Lots of outdoor seating space. Thought the actual parking spaces are limited, people seemed to be parking wherever they could.

Google
My husband, dog, and I visited Suttons Bay Ciders on our camping trip. The view and whole property is beautiful. We shared a flight then each got a drink of our own. The staff were very friendly!

Google
If you have the opportunity of visiting here do it, delicious cocktails and amazing view of the bay. My daughter and sister were visiting from overseas and they were impressed with this place. A gem !!

Google
Great location, great ciders! Dog is adorable walking around. The prettiest view in the area!

Sarah Brooks

Google
The best view on the peninsula!! The ciders are great especially the frozen ciders. So refreshing!!

Google
Gorgeous location with super friendly people. We met the owner and he was wonderful to us and our daughters. The bartender was also very friendly. The cherry cider was absolutely delicious! We absolutely loved visiting! Thank you, Mark, for your kindness. You really made our trip special!

Yelp
We got a flight of 8 to try all of the flavors. $16 for a flight of 8 ciders, good cost, super friendly service, and the cutest vibes! We sat outside at the picnic tables for the flights then came inside so my boyfriend could watch some of the football game on the tv. Gorgeous views and the cutest little spot! They have a deck with umbrellas, a wooded area with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs, and a grassy area with umbrellas and corn hole boards. Such a cute set up!

Yelp
Amazing ciders, beautiful views, great live music, friendly staff ... Suttons Bay has everything! We had truly the best afternoon here tasting ciders and admiring the views. I love that you can order blends to mix up the flavors! I got a blend of the cherry and the spicy habanero cider. And the cider slushies were great! I will absolutely be back next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
First stop, and a pretty good one as it is among one of my favorites. Great scenery, great outdoor and indoor seating areas. The layout is such that you can spread out over the property with lake views pretty much everywhere. Exceptionally tasty cider! Sweet and dry selections to fit anyone's palette. Great and speedy service with whom I assume was the owner personally checking in on us. A must stop while in the area!

Yelp
Some of the nicest staff you will meet in all of Sutton's bay! This place is wonderful beyond words. Beautiful views of the bay, delicious ciders, and there's a dog. Just do yourself a favor and stop here, you won't regret it.

Yelp
What an awesome place to spend an afternoon! The views here are top notch and the cider is delish. They have a pretty decent amount of ciders to choose from so we started with a flight of 8. Most were on the dryer side. I think my favorite was the Power Island and Cherry Fest. My husband really liked Smitten. And later one of the bartenders suggested mixing the Smitten and the Cherry Fest half and half which really hit the spot! We ended up coming here twice while we were in town. They have lots of outdoor seating in various places. The windows inside are nice big picture windows to show off the view from anywhere you choose to hang. If you are a cider fan, I highly recommend making a stop here!

Yelp
Hidden gem! Worth the drive to see this view! Great ciders with great people! Variety of ciders to choose from I recommend the flight.

Yelp
Suttons Bay Ciders is a worthwhile stop while in the area. Here's why you should make a trip to this award-winning, family-owned cidery: 1) Location: On top of a hill overlooking the Grand Traverse Bay, the cidery offers stunning views of the water. Nestled in a forest, the setting makes you feel like you're in the Pacific Northwest. It's near several other wineries, which explains the wine tour buses that stop here. (Warning- those tourists can be rude.) 2) Space: There's a parking lot by a chicken coop. Walk up the stairs to find a spacious tasting room with a long bar and a few tables. There's an outdoor deck with tables, an outdoor tent and an area with picnic tables, two igloos and games like cornhole. 3) Cider: Using local apples, they have a large, diverse cider menu. Order the tasting to try them all. They have ice cider, drier cider, sweeter cider and cider with unique flavors like mint, peach cream, jalapeno and peanut butter and jelly. There's a little shop inside that sells bottles of their cider. You'll want to take some home with you!

Yelp
We absolutely loved our time here! Highly recommend! The cider was amazing and their border collie was a major highlight to an amazing day exploring the area! We can't wait to visit again!
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
We were welcomed at the door on a beautiful fall day. There is lots of outside seating overlooking the beautiful bay. Sitting inside there is a wall of windows overlooking the bay. The cider all have such distinct tastes and there is a great variety. Loved it here! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Carol M.

Yelp
A delightful find sitting among the treetops! The bartender was friendly and engaging, the ciders were delicious and the view from the deck was absolutely amazing! We ordered a flight of four and, honestly, I could have ordered a pint of any one of them and been happy, but I have to admit that I went for the sweeter cider and ordered the "Smitten"...and I was. Smitten, that is! It was very refreshing. I love this place and will definitely return if I am ever in this area again.

Landon D.

Yelp
What a beautiful place! The owner is so nice along with great service at the bar. All of the cider choices are very tasty and you just can't beat the view. Definitely recommend visiting, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
The staff was very friendly and informative. Did the 8 cider tasting. Loved I spy ginger and mosaic. Gordon greeted us. Super sweet dog. The view was absolutely incredible

Yelp
This spot was a really welcome stop on our weekend tour of the TC area. The location is really nice, way up on a hill with a gorgeous view of the lake. Dog-friendly, a big plus! Tons of outdoor seating and some indoors. Set up with heaters and fires outside to keep people warm - presumably more so once it gets a bit colder than it was this last weekend. They also have a really nice cider diversity! I think we tried a flight of all 10 offerings that they had. Not a big fan of some of them, but they had some really nice ciders as well. Staff were super nice and you could try all 10 of their ciders for a very reasonable $18 - which we shared. Not my favorite ciders of the weekend, but some very good ones and a stunning location. Well worth a stop!

James S.

Yelp
The manager Dennis was extremely rude. He treated me like I was trash I he wanted me to leave. Will not go back if he is there.
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Super dog friendly! Loved the patio areas. Bought a dog water bowl & cherry ciders to take home! Great service! Beautiful view! Thank you for a great day!

Yelp
SC and I were in the area a few weeks ago heading out of Suttons Bay (such a cute area!!) and he found this place online so we decided to check it out and we're so glad we did! The staff was friendly, the view was GORGEOUS (we even saw a double rainbow!), and the drinks were really unique!! We got the full flight of 10 (including their dessert wine and special) for $15 which was really reasonable. We liked that you could taste the ingredients in each cider- ginger, jalapeno, lavender, barrel-aged, etc. My personal favorite was the Mosiac. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with varying views to enjoy. A really beautiful place to sit back, enjoy nature and some good drinks! Plus, the staff let us pick out a couple apples to take too!
google avatar

Connor A.

Yelp
Friendly staff, amazing and unique ciders, the view is unreal! Was a sunny January day, so we decided to swing into here for great cider and views. Real fire roaring in the fireplace was great ambiance! Love it!
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
When it comes to ambiance, views, and service. Sutton's Bay Ciders definitely has all that. Where it falls short for me is the product itself. We got the flight of 10 which included their fortified cider, that was probably the only good on that they had. Really wanted to like this place but the cider just fell flat for me. Maybe we got the wrong seasonal batch?

Candace S.

Yelp
This place was by far the best of all of our visits. Amazing view, tasty drinks, friendly staff, best scenery of the weekend and oh, they love dogs and have an onsite chicken that rules the coop.
google avatar

Terry Z.

Yelp
Great cidery, fantastic views and awesome people!! We meet Dave the owner and he sat down with us and we talked about he had started his business, Dave is a great guy and Gordon the dog was a delight to have around!!! We both had a flight and everything we tried was better than the last!! Don't miss out on this place

K K.

Yelp
Average at best. Everything tasted like apple cider with some odd flavorings mixed in. Like most of them come from the same base cider. Not horrible just boring. If u ever get a chance to have Blake's ciders from SE MI then you will understand. These were a no for me. The views are great but the deck is very small.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
During this wine tour this was most definitely my favorite spot...the view was fantastic, the staff was friendly and kind the owner has his dog roaming the property (super friendly) he's the mascot on apparel. The jalapeño wine different but so good I truly enjoyed it there and will return
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Could not have had a better experience here! It was our first time and we were unfamiliar with the menu. We weren't looking to do a full tasting at this point in our afternoon, and our bartender couldn't have been more helpful! She made excellent recommendations based on what we told her we enjoyed. She recommended a combo cider for me which was amazing! Amazing staff, amazing views and great cider!!! Can't ask for much more! We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Sutton's Bay Ciders not only has delicious cider but they have a view like no other! You'll get a great view while sitting at the bar or even outside on their awesome deck. Their landscaping is absolutely stunning as well. This is also a kid friendly facility. They have a stack of board games to play while you're there visiting. Since they don't serve food you're welcome to bring your own. Currently, our favorite Ciders from here are Mosaic and Smitten. Something we love about cider is that it's always changing since no two apples are the same. We were lucky enough to have Mark offer us a tour of their facility. It was really awesome to see their process of making cider from the very beginning until the finished product that was in our glass. Sutton's Bay is another cidery we've enjoying visiting and enjoying since the very beginning. Go get some!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Order the flight of 8 ciders, nothing particularly stood out. In general we enjoyed the sweeter varieties more. Beautiful overlook and location. Nice tasting room and very friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Yelp
This gorgeous tasting room was another stop during wine weekend and another personal favorite of mine. It's tucked off and there's a cute walk way leading up to the entrance. You pass a few benches, lawn chairs and a picnic area that leads you up to the most spectacular view of the nearby lake! Once you get inside there are these huge windows just behind the bar so you can sit, order and enjoy the beautiful scenic background. And that's exactly what my group and I did! We ordered a flight of ciders, which all tasted amazing but I seriously could not get over how gorgeous the view was, just from sitting at the bar too! The trees were lush and all had different shades of green, you could see the water just beyond the trees and a small island as well. The staff was very friendly and provided us with a couple bowls of popcorn which was super yummy and much needed:) There's a pretty decent sized deck for an even better view, and I made sure to take lots of breathtaking pics.

Colette L.

Yelp
Sutton's Bay Ciders is an absolute MUST! The atmosphere is beyond welcoming and the refreshments are top notch. Not only are they knowledgeable, the staff is also welcoming and has an incredible environment to welcome guests indoors and outdoors. Dogs are welcome and there are also several places to relax outdoors given the recent pandemic. Mike and Jon will take good care of you and the local mascot, Gordy, will provide plenty of hugs and puppy kisses. This place was incredible and we will be back in a heart beat with our friends and families. A++++ service and experience!

Yelp
EVERYYTHING is amazing about this place. The drive to it, the grounds, the staff, the coders/drinks, the outdoor seating. I toured most of the peninsulas and this place is a top 5 for me! I had a flight of samples that were so much fun to try. I was surprised at some that I ended up loving! We even took a couple growlers out. My favorite is their dog. He has no interest in you but he's still cool to have around. The staff was having a great time, a seriously great time and it made it that much more enjoyable. The owner was working the place too and I appreciate seeing that, I can see why the staff and everyone loves being there. The owner really made it a point to thank us for coming by.
google avatar

Mari H.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the woods! Beautiful view of Lake Michigan and great setting with friends. I had a 6 cider sampler with the bartender's recommendation. There is plenty of sitting areas throughout the property. Loved it, can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Megan P.

Yelp
My boyfriend is a cider lover and we had been to two cider mills before this place - OH MY GOSH - have we been missing out? This place was the first place where we bought growlers of cider (Smitten is the best). I loved everything about this place - the bartender, the ciders (we tried them all on the flight), the bar area, and the drinking area. Even if you don't like ciders, come for the view. I seriously wish we had come here first so that we could have had an evening cider drink and overlooked the bay. I proudly bought my first growler and a hoodie. I can't wait to come back to this place!
google avatar

Kerry F.

Yelp
Came in asked where the lavender cider was. Guy laughed and said. "Wow naw we haven't have that for awhile and was kind of condescending jerk. Wow. As a matter of fact No I have not been here for while. It's been a year. BUT you've had it for the last 3. So in the future when someone asks where their favorite cider is, instead of being rude maybe realize that they get 1 vacation a year and out of the many, many places in the area I could visit I chose to go here so maybe don't be jerk because I'm sure your bottom line is paved by locals and is tourists don't matter at all....
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this cidery. First, the view is fantastic (overlooking Grand Traverse Bay), and secondly the staff are friendly. Finally... the Cider. Take home a growler of their award winning cider. They just started bottling some of their standards (like Mosaic and The lavender ). I can't wait for them to find a distributor!! We've been here each time we were in the area the last two years. We fill the cooler! Advice: order the 8 sampler, a cheese and meat tray, sit outside and enjoy the view! (And don't forget to take home some ciders!)

UpNorth M.

Yelp
Mixed feelings on this place. On the positive side; view that can't be beat on either peninsula, and Geof and Jon are awesome servers. On the neutral side; ciders are adequate, but nothing special considering other options nearby. On the negative side; driveway/parking is horrendous (especially in winter where I have literally seen cars sliding and hitting each other just pulling in/out, but summer is also bad in a different way), and is a bit chaotic/disheveled setting throughout the property. Also, be aware of the dog onsite. Seems friendly overall but I saw him bite a kid once. The owner kinda brushed it off, and I heard her say something along the lines of "he probably had it coming" after they left. So that tips my score down to a 2-star.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
The woman at the front door was amazingly rude and disrespectful. It was cold and pouring rain when we arrived so we ran to the door to get inside. However....the "greeter" was speaking with another group ahead of us and was blocking the doorway. When the group ahead of us was finally allowed to move inside out of the rain, we stepped inside. Your "friendly greeter" did not like this one bit and was very rude to our group. The view from your balcony was amazing, your cider is delicious, but your customer service at the front door was lacking considerably. A business like yours should have someone cordial at the front door that caters to the needs of the customer and can actually be nice to them. Your "greeter" was not any of these things. Consider more of a greeting area outside the front door to protect your patrons from the rain and post someone there who wants to be there.
google avatar

Andrea E.

Yelp
We were using a winery treasure map to hit every place and this one wasn't on it but we wanted to check it out - it turns out they just opened a week ago so they haven't made it to the being on maps milestone yet. The view is gorgeous - there's windows all along the bar so while you're sitting there you can overlook the vast wine kingdom. And they had a fire going when we went which was delightful. In the summer the patio will be great but it was too cold and windy for us. A 3 cider tasting flight was three bucks - well worth it, and they've got howlers and growlers to take home I'm bummed we didn't get to try the one they've got made from northern spies because it's not ready yet but I'll stop back in for sure.

Yelp
A must visit when venturing from TC to Sutton's Bay. Definitely has a tree house feel with amazing views of the bay. Great ciders and the staff know how to help you find something you will like if you aren't big into ciders. I love ciders with spice and they have had a great one on tap both times I have visited.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
Of all the places around, this one is a MUST! We came here after visiting multiple other wineries/cideries throughout the weekend and this one was our absolute favorite. The views here are the best and the atmosphere can't be beat. The flight of 8 ciders is the way to go, you get to taste basically everything on the menu. All the ciders were so tasty. You can also order glasses or growlers (to-go). The bartenders are very accommodative and are excited to have you there. They are very friendly and can give great recommendations on what mixes to do. We loved this place so much that we want to plan another trip to Traverse City just to come back here! I can't recommend this place enough.
google avatar

Lexi S.

Yelp
We LOVE Suttons Bay Ciders! They have delicious ciders with an awesome view! Try the spicy Sidra LaPeño for a wild kick! Best Ciders this side of the Mississippi!
google avatar

MacKayla M.

Yelp
My favorite place to go in Traverse City! It breaks up all of the wine with some awesome cider with multiple flavors and great prices! The best view you can get and the staff is so nice, fast, and efficient! Gorgeous places to sit, multiple options!
google avatar

Barbara H.

Yelp
A regular stop on our tour UpNorth. Treat you like family and have great ciders. The view from the bluff is worth the visit.. They even remembered our crazy dog from the last visit!
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
This is definitely my favorite place in the Traverse City area! There are always a ton of seasonal flavors of cider to try, so I recommend getting the flight. Even if you're not super into cider, the views from here are amazing, and there's a good amount of outdoor space to hang around in. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Loved this place. Best view, awesome ciders friendly staff!
google avatar

Blaise B.

Yelp
THE BEST place for cider on Leelanau Peninsula! The view is amazing, the cider tastes great, and the owner and other people who work there are all wonderfully friendly. I've seen some reviews where people are complaining because they only liked two or three ciders, but that's the POINT. The menu was designed for that. If everyone likes two or three ciders, they're all going to be different as far as which ciders, so there's something for everyone! I would much prefer that over somewhere where I might like everything, but my friends would hate everything. We accidentally first stumbled upon this place the week after they opened, and have returned several times a year since then. I highly recommend anyone on the peninsula to stop in! My only suggestion to them is that I would LOVE to see them participate in the peninsula-wide events. Tandem Ciders does, and while we make an effort to stop at Suttons Bay Ciders anyway, it would be nice if the tickets we bought were valid there as well!
google avatar

Lindsay O.

Yelp
Pretty good. I expect great things in the future. Still working out things I expect. Amazing view, friendly staff and on the drizzling cold day the fire place was most welcoming. The cider is good, the pours were a little skimpy for the price. Not all my questions could be answered but, to be honest they were pretty tough. The prices and the pours were my biggest beef. There is always room for improvement and the view can't be beat!
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Sometimes a boozy cruise around the Leelanau peninsula is an awesome way to spend the afternoon. We started our day with a tasting flight at Suttons Bay ciders and ended up grabbing a pint at the end of the day because they were open til 8 on Saturday...plus I love the taste of their cherry cider. We were lucky to be served by the owner's daughters who come to town from time to time apparently. They should announce when they're around cause I'd make a point to come back just for them! #ciderbabes
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
The only thing giving them 2 stars is the scenery. We tried all of the ciders. The flight was reasonably priced. 8 tastes for $10. The only one worth ordering is their cherry cider. The bartender was a pompous prick. He was very dismissive was not very helpful and was only concerned about us paying. It's unfortunate they have a sub par product with a phenomenal view.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Friendly staff, amazing ciders ranging from sweet to dry to satisfy anyone's preferences and one of the best views you can find! Our engagement celebrations took us all over the TC are and both peninsulas but of all the places we visited this was our favorite. Tucked away off of M-22 this little slice of heaven offers delicious coders, tasty snacks from local butcher shops and cheese makers and the best view of the bay. Sit outside and enjoy some drinks and take in the scenery. I did not want to leave and I'm already looking forward to my next visit!
google avatar

Michele A.

Yelp
Wonderful small family owned place. The views are stunning from the bar and they have an outside sitting area to enjoy your cider. The ciders we got to taste were all fantastic. They had ciders that were traditional dry to more sweetened. I loved their ginger cider it was amazing. The staff which is all family it seems are super knowledgable.
google avatar

Ron E.

Yelp
A wonderful stop on your wine tour. Fantastic cider. Do the full flight of eight. Also one of the best views. Sit on the cute deck with a cuppa and enjoy!
