8 Best Winter Hiking Trails in the U.S.

"Start this portion of the Florida Trail from Southwest 79th Terrace in Jasper and hike a nearly eight-mile one-way trip to Holton Creek River Camp, passing cypress trees and limestone bluffs en route. Along the way you can explore a white-sand beach and the sinks, swales, and sloughs within the 2,500-acre Suwannee River Water Management District; winter conditions here are mild (70–80°F possible), so pack a long-sleeved shirt and sunscreen despite the season." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. Had a blast but they made my friend leave and tried to steal his electrical cord, then tried to extort him for 50 bucks to give it back. The park officer brought it back. The Mad Hatter is a very popular guy at the festival, so they really got a black eye. The park was great, I had no problems, but the few ruin it for many. So shame on the staff, you should refund Kevin 100% of his money. Until you do I will never come back.

Just a few tables, swingset and some areas to swim. You can get down to thr river to swim as well. There was an area of ruins there. You can see the Suwannee bridge from there.

On the day I visited (day after Christmas), there was no one there. A sign was left on the ranger station window saying the trails were closed, but no one was there to patrol, so you could take the trails at your own peril. It's an overall nice park that has the feel of being out in the woods/nature with some views of the Suwanee River. It made for a nice stop to take a walk in nature before continuing my drive (not far from highway I-10) while also crossing off another Florida State Park from the list.

Just came back from a two nights stay @ Suwannee River state park. We rented a cabin and it was large, comfortable and very well equipped. A/C in this hot summer worked pretty good plus there are fans in each room. Park is gorgeous and well kept. Hiking trails inside the parks perimeter are perfect for beginners. Overall our stay was wonderful. Peaceful and quiet place. Beautiful surroundings

Really nice park! Lots of trails. Great place to picnic, nice restrooms. Access to the Suwannee River to fish, but lots of rocks and root snags. Boat ramp.

The water is very dark and coffee looking. But there is a rope swing under the bridge. I do. Not believe I was able to explore the whole place.

This place was a really nice park but it wasn't quite shining like it should when we were there due to a hurricane that came through about a half year ago as well as high water levels. They seem to be trying to clean up and a lot of the trails are passable but the look outs were mostly closed and there is still a lot of lumber laying on the ground yet, but I'm sure the hard working rangers will eventually have this park cleaned back up and looking like it's former glory soon! And I hope to stop in next year to see it 😉

This is a small park, but it has nice/we'll maintained, level rv pads, we fit our 35ft fifthwheel without any issues. Some of the spots are tight to get into we saw some neighbors struggle, but even they made it. The bathrooms and showers are clean and maintained, I love that their is a coded entry. Beautiful trail system with a boat ramp and river access. And tons of little wildlife to keep the kiddos entertained!

Yelp
Making this my year to visit more state parks along the gulf coast. Suwannee River made the list, and glad it did. Not a ton to do, but great place to relax and step back in time. The river is beautiful. The short hikes along the river bank, to the civil war sites and to the forgotten town of Columbus, FL are all well worth your time. The campground is well maintained, with a very nice, and obviously new, restroom/shower complex. Most camp sites are fairly close to one another, but the trees provide some privacy. Super friendly ranger staff, as well!

Yelp
First time at this small State Park not too far from the Interstate just be careful not to enter name of park in your GPS but the actual address because it will take you to a dead end street where it is very hard to make a Uturn if you are with a toe that can not back up, luckily I barely made it otherwise I would have had to disconnect in the rain. Campground itself is small and sites don't seem to be level. Front to back is easier to level your rig but when one side is higher than the other gives you an awkward feeling inside, rain slope I understand

Yelp
We went on a weekend trip here with my kids and I had an absolutely AMAZING time! We rented one of the cabins and did MY version of camping. The porch was phenomenal. I would have slept out there! The weather at the beginning of May is perfect. Not too hot during the day but not too cold at night. I would definitely bring a light sweater year round as it can be a little chilly regardless. The cabin was well-stocked with clean linens and towels. May want to bring your own beach type towels but there were plenty and we were a family of 5 this weekend. The kitchen had just about everything you could possibly need to cook for the weekend. The back of the cabin had a grill as well as a fire pit. The porch was my favorite part. It wrapped around the front and side of the cabin and we saw deer off the porch several times. It's fully screened in so no worries about mosquitoes etc. There were two rocking chairs, a swing, and a coffee table out there. Again, it was heaven. I could have stayed there the whole time! I took my coffee out in the morning and read a book while the sun rose. We also went canoeing with my older son. My younger was not too thrilled with the idea so he stayed at the cabin with his Nana while the rest of us went. The canoe company picked up us, drove us 8 miles up the river, and provided us with a map, the canoe, and life preservers. They were really nice and had a lot of info on the area. It was an absolute blast. The current wasn't too fast, just quick enough to take up downstream without having to paddle too much. We beached the canoe in several areas to explore. The entire weekend was great. Very relaxing and pristine. For the cabin we got, I expected to pay a lot more. Will be making this a regular early summer trip!

Yelp
Nice park and very laid back. I'm giving three stars for my experience while staying. We came for the weekend and it's mostly filled with senior citizens, which is fine, but means a bunch of yappy dogs. Please if you bring your yappy dogs, don't let them be annoying to other campers who drive a long way to enjoy the weekend.

Yelp
One of the state parks in the area that I wanted to visit. It had it all! Trails, history, a spring run, and the Suwannee River! I really enjoyed it. I walked to all the historic areas, the graveyard, Civil War embankment, and saw the leftover machinery from the sawmill. There was a spring run running through the park that was very refreshing. I went on Labor Day weekend so the only downside was there were a lot of boaters along the bank of the Suwannee blasting music, not ideal for enjoying nature. I stopped in the ranger station to ask a few questions, the rangers were very friendly and professional. I would like to return on a weekend that is not as busy. Definitely recommend hiking there.

Yelp
Great little park, nice easy hike and beautiful views along the river trail. Stopped by here on my way to Daytona for the 500, it's just a few miles off the highway, maybe 15-20 mins. In the main parking area there are 2 covered patios with rest rooms, between is an open area with some grills and plenty of space for small gatherings. On the trails, mind your step... not all roots are roots, seen a few snakes and accidentally stepped on one. Thankfully it wasn't injured and was able to slither off into the ferns. There are a few boat ramps too if that's your thing. Nicely sloped and in good repair. Nice stop if you're in the area.

Yelp
Such a beautiful park and campground! There are many hiking trails, the Suwannee River to boat/kayak on, and close by areas to visit. The campground is quaint and clean - the weather is gorgeous

Yelp
I stayed here in November 2014. It was really cold, and I was camping in a tent, burrr but had a great time despite it, having found a great group of new friends called the Crazy Campers to hang out with. Really had a great time, the campgrounds were beautiful, wonderful time getting back to nature. Amenities were rustic, but everything was clean and grounds were kept up nicely. It's been a while, but I'm sure it's still beautiful.

Yelp
The map pin that shows the park at 132nd St. is middle of nowhere with no parks or trails.

Yelp
I launched my canoe from the park and left my car and trailer here for several days. Very nice park, clean bathrooms and everything was well maintained. Nice wide ramp and easy to launch.

Yelp
The park is beautiful and well maintained. The staff are friendly and accessible. The river is beautiful but can't be seen without a short hike. There is nothing for miles but peace and quiet aside from the occasional train rolling by. If you want peace and quiet and a beautiful river this is a good place to go. The camping spots are a little tight and very un-level so be prepared to to block up the wheels. It has full hook up so that's a nice change as most of the Fl State parks do not. Have all the supplies you need because the closest store is about 15 miles away. It's a good park the 3 star raiting is based on the size, angle, and closeness of the sites.
