SuYu Pei

We come here often and it’s always excellent. I usually get the Mandarin orange chicken and my girlfriend gets the fried rice, and both are consistently good every single time. We also always order the crab rangoon, which are amazing as well. One of the best parts is the staff and owners. Every time we come in, they are incredibly kind and welcoming. They always remember us and even take the time to chat with us about our lives and how we’re doing, which makes the experience even better. My girlfriend has been coming here since she was a kid, back when the restaurant was at its old location. The food and people remained just as great. We love coming in as often as we can. It’s great food, great service, and a place we’ll definitely keep coming back to.

The food here isn’t the best, even when I treat it as American-Chinese and not authentic. I wanted to get their Sichuan chicken, but I was told it was sweet and spicy, not mala, so I skipped it. The orange chicken was way too sweet for me and a bit stringy. The shrimp fried rice was mushy, but the flavor wasn’t bad. The twice cooked pork was actually pretty decent. They serve food in takeout containers which is either lazy or genius. They also bring rice as balls on a plate which is a little unusual. Overall, if you want American-Chinese food, you might like this place. Otherwise, I would not recommend if you’re looking for authentic Chinese.

Best American Chinese food I've had in the area. Vegetables taste and look fresh. The cabbage is crisp. The dumpings, plump. David was a gem, made everyone walking through the door on the cold January night feel right at home. Definitely warm yourself up with a cup of hot and sour soup.

We had THE best food here this evening on Black Friday! I had a curry rice noodle dish with veggies and chicken. My spouse had a Szechuan veggie and shrimp dish. We split the crab rangoons as the appetizer. Talk about delish! The service was fantastic, too - couldn’t ask for more friendly, accommodating staff! They checked on us just enough - not too much or too little. We definitely plan to come back!

They were open Thanksgiving Night. Our dinner plans got cancelled because of several illnesses. We wanted to recreate A Christmas Story dinner, to include Chinese dinner. After calling the Eggroll House, and determined they weren't open, we called Su Yu Pei's, they were open, so called in an order. 10 minutes later we were picking it up. We were greeted when we arrived. Paid for and picked up our food. Sweet n Sout pork, Mongolian Beef, Egg Rolls. The food was awesome! We cant wait to dine there again. Thank you Su Yu Pei's. Awesome job!

What a gem of a restaurant! The owner is incredibly friendly and even took the time to show us the traditional way to eat our Moo Shu Pork – it was fantastic! He also recommended the Drunken Noodles, and they did not disappoint. Excellent food and even better service. This is my new go-to spot for Chinese food.

I was waiting for my car to be ready for pickup at a friend’s mechanic shop and I walked into SuYu Pei on 16th Ave SW for lunch at 1:15 today (Thursday) and was greeted immediately and told I could sit wherever I’d like. Not even 20 seconds later my waiter, Leo, showed up and told me about the lunch specials: For $10, you can choose from a large list of lunch items, each including an entree, side of rice, and a cheese Rangoon! He could tell I was stuck with all of the choices so he asked me what kinds of things I normally liked and recommended his favorite dish, so that’s what I chose. I ordered the Sichuan with chicken, but you can also order it with beef, shrimp or tofu. I’m not lying when I say the food came out, piping hot, in about three minutes. Anyone who knows me knows I love sauce. I didn’t have to get any extra sauce for this bad boy, it was sauuuuucy! 😍 The white rice was nice and sticky, the way it’s supposed to be, and the cheese Rangoon was crispy on the edges and soft and all the way filled in the middle. Leo was so knowledgeable about the menu and fun to talk to, not to mention quick at noticing and asking for refills or if I needed anything else. I even found out that we knew a lot of the same people and we talked and laughed about that fact for a few minutes. After he brought me a box for the rest of my food, I told him my car was getting worked on at a shop nearby so I might sit a while longer if that was ok, and he looked concerned and told me the area wasn’t super great for walking and asked me if I needed a ride back to the shop! Talk about customer service! I’m currently still sitting in the booth at SuYu Pei, but if I didn’t want to be, I could be in and out in 20 minutes easily. With the amazing customer service, super tasty food, and quick delivery times, If you’re looking for somewhere to stop on your lunch break, this is definitely the place!

The food wasn't the best but the waitress that I had her name was Melissa was absolutely amazing along with funny and really sweet

Food is good and not expensive, portion's are great size & feed at least 2 people . Staff are friendly & fast service.

Service is always amazing! They customized spice levels accordingly. My husband wanted extra spicy but I'm a medium spice girl. Huge portions. I love how they deliver food in the to go boxes so you don't have to ask for them.

I have been a loyal patron of Pei's since they were located on the NE side of town. Love their food. Hot and fresh. Great fried rice and crab rangoons and always treated well. I was recently there for lunch and ordered my usual mandarin fried rice. It comes with shrimp, chicken and beef. The amount of meat in my fried rice was so sparce it was extremely noticeable. I didn't say anything at the time but if I dine there again and notice the meat portion of the item is still lacking I am afraid I won't be eating there any longer. I could simply order fried rice and save the money I am charged for an item with meat. I would miss eating there so I am hoping this was a one time oversite.

Excellent food and service! Came here with my daughter and we both knew immediately that we would have to come back again!! It's a small cozy place that made us feel comfortable but not crowded.

Walked in, greeted, ordered take out, they was quick and the food was hot. Great, welcoming atmosphere.

My family has been going to the Pei's restaurants for decades. Since the late 90's. I literally have absolutely no complaints for all these years.

Great tasting food, good portions, and excellent service. I had the Singapore Mei Fun with chicken and shrimp as well as the Hot and Sour soup. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

Simple atmosphere. Nothing fancy but the food quality is very good, hot, and so fast. Madi was my server and she gave the best service. i went there on a Wednesday between6-6:30 and the place was pretty full but everything was good and fast. This is the mid Western United States so authentic chinese food is difficult to find at best and especially getting authentic chinese ingredients is even more difficult but they dk a great job regardless of what some reviews say the quality of food is excellent. I met friends at SuYu Pei Chinese (3200 16th Avenue SW Suite D 319-363-2626). SuYu Pei is a local family owned restaurant They are well known for delicious food and affordable $10.00 lunch specials. They make it easy to order takeout or delivery. I ordered the Mongolian Chicken lunch ($10.00) which includes Fried or Steamed Rice and a Crab Rangoon! I also requested a bowl of Hot and Sour Soup ($6.00) for an appetizer, with Water ($0.00) to drink. Smaller cups of soup ($3.00) are available. Melissa, our waitress, stopped by a number of times to assure there were no issues and we were satisfied. Pei's food hit the spot! I left VERY satisfied. SuYu Pei's is highly recommended! I Definitely Will Return.

Crab Rangoon's are delicious! It feels like they just moved in and aren't settled yet.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this little place but it was very good! Everything was very fresh and our meal was delicious aside from one thing... the egg rolls were literally dripping with grease, so we did not enjoy those, won't order them again. Besides that, the food was great and the service was excellent. Ignore the ambiance, the food is worth it.

Those who know Dave from his prior role at Pei's know that he took over this former restaurant space and is slowly making it his own. The food is so worth overlooking the atmosphere that some reviewers complain about. When they first started out they served the meals in containers as they moved from a take-out-only place. Big deal. Look at it as a unique business model v complaining about it. The rangoons are packed with cream cheese - they don't state they have crab (that way they can be vegetarian). The rangoons are a family recipe in taste and design (not folded allowing for even more cream cheese!!) and echo Pei's Mandarin of yesteryear. The rangoons are well-known to and loved by those of us who have lived here for years. Never had a bad meal. Those of us who know this institution will continue to come back and enjoy a good meal. Haters gonna hate.

So glad Pei's is back! I came with some friends for their $10 lunch special - almost anything on the menu with white or friend rice and a crab Rangoon. It was just how I remember it. I got the Ming's chicken a personal favorite. Whether you are dining in or getting takeout, SuYu Pei's is what you need in your life right now!

I've tried a lot of Chinese places in Cedar Rapids / Marion. Some have been slightly better than others. Some have been very good for a short time. Since I first tried SuYu Pei, every meal I have had there has been absolutely fantastic. They are not just slightly better than the other options. They are head and shoulders above any of the other Chinese restaurants I have tried in Iowa. SuYu Pei is the only place I can think of where I constantly try new things because everything I try is better than the last. If you like spicy food, I highly recommend the Singapore mei fun. If you don't like spicy food, I also love the Mongolian chicken / beef / pork, and the princess chicken / beef / pork.

Superb Chinese food! Pei's food is superb. Fried rice, egg rolls, ragoons, lomein, all cooked to perfection. Nobody will go home hungry because they serve it in big portions. The owner used to own/cook for Pei's Mandarin so he is a highly experienced chef.

Very Good and spicy the shrimp are huge. Best Chinese food in CR. I have tried several dishes and all were excellent but this is my favorite so far.

I'll be completely honest - as far as the food goes, I'd say that this was a 4-star experience. However, I don't want to be "that guy" that gives this new restaurant its first sub-5 star rating. Also, I have a soft spot in my heart for the original Pei's Mandarin over on 6th Street. That was a regular destination for us when I still lived here, and on our visits back to the area we would often go back. So when I learned that this is the next iteration of Pei's, I knew that I wanted to give it a try. The new menu is relatively simple and easy to understand, classified by sauce/flavor rather than meat or vegetable category. That is, instead of having a chicken or pork section of the menu, you can choose from "Mongolian" or "princess" or "General Tao's", and then pick your protein (beef, shrimp, tofu). We ordered takeout, which was a bit problematic at first. The first half dozen times I tried to call, the phone would ring but then would convert to a busy signal. For a while we wondered whether the restaurant was still in operation. We considered choosing a different place, but I was committed to checking this place out and decided to just get in my car and start the 20 minute drive, and I would just place my order when I arrived. However, about 5 minutes into my drive I was able to get through and place the order. I did have just a teeny bit of trouble finding the place, because currently the sign for the former restaurant is what's visible from the road. There is a temporary canvas sign hanging below it, so as I pulled up close I could see that I made it to the right destination. In our takeout boxes that evening were: Orange shrimp - nice plump breaded shrimp coated in a sweet and tangy orange sauce. As is often the case with these kinds of dishes, there was more cornstarch than necessary, but it was a good bite. Chicken chow mein - a fairly standard dish, but pretty well-executed. The chicken was tender but the dish could used some more vegetables. It was cooked with a brown sauce that made the flavor a little difficult to distinguish from our other two dishes, but I appreciated that it wasn't too salty either. General Tao's pork - be advised that even though this is not labeled as a spicy dish, there is a little bit of heat. Flavor-wise, it seemed to be similar to chow mein and the tofu dish, just with a little kick to it. I liked the mix of vegetables in this dish, but the pork was perhaps a little overcooked and slightly tough. Broccoli tofu - as already mentioned, the flavor was similar to the pork and noodle dish. This isn't necessarily a criticism but it wasn't possible to determine the similarities in advance based on the menu description. To be certain, the other flavor options do make themselves clear. In any case, this tofu dish was my favorite of the evening. So, this was an enjoyable and nostalgic experience for me. Glad to see that the Pei family is back in the game, and I'm looking forward to getting food here again when my path takes me back to CR.

Did take out based on other reviews I had heard about and from the ordering over the phone and the pick up which my wife did was such a great experience...so attentive, great customer service! The food - everything we ordered for take out was top notch...quality and by far the freshest crab ragoons I've ever had...everything we ordered seemed from scratch and it showed...compliments to this restaurant and their staff. Looking forward to dining in next time around!

The best chinese food I have ever had, Beijing and Panda aren't even in the same ball park. Everything is so authentic, especially the recipes. The service was amazing, I couldn't have asked for anything better. The food was fresh, hot, and cooked perfectly. I ordered the Mongolian Chicken. I also only had to wait 10 minutes for the food to come out. 10/10 recommend this, if you're looking for the best chinese restaurant in the state of Iowa, Suyu Pei is tho one!

We've had the good fortune to enjoy Asian food in many parts of the US and around the world. What we had at SuYu Pei could hold its own against most. Top 25%. Fast, courteous and a very generous serving(s). Plenty for leftovers. Waitress was very kind. Reasonable price. We'll be back. Thanks.

Fresh vegetables, my daughter had the shrimp said it tasted fresh. The chicken I had was perfect and not at all over cooked. Rice was fresh not old and sticky. Fantastic crab ragoons . Fast service. Highly recommend. Will definitely go back!

I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp and the shrimp was way over cooked. Like a deep fat fried little pud of leather. I also had an egg roll and the cabbage was very coarsely cut and all of it wanted to come out on the first bite. I can only judge based on this one meal so maybe the cook was having a bad night.

jjajangmyeon was so good!! have had it twice now and both times were so good! also tried the general tao's and that was super good too!! the people working in there were super nice both time i've been, excited to try more!!

Great tasting food with amazing portions. It's not the cheapest but also you are getting like two meals with one order which is nice. Service is quick and nice. It's mostly a takeout place and they have seating inside. Add like a TV or more wall decor because it looks like the sit down restaurant part isn't used ever. Will go again for sure! Also gluten free and vegetarian options!

Went based on Yelp reviews, and it did not disappoint. Food was served quickly, even though the restaurant was busy for Father's Day. Egg rolls were served cut in two, which made for a nice presentation and easier eating. The spicy mustard had a very welcome amount of heat to it. No packets of mustard, a squeeze bottle brought to the table. Like how entrees and rice were served in to go containers. Some may not like this due to a lack of presentation, though it made taking home the generous servings much easier. The service was attentive and friendly. Drink refills were prompt, without being requested. We asked for chop sticks, and our server was happy and pleasant in delivering them. That may sound odd, though some places can be challenging to provide them. The food was very good, the Kung Pao chicken was flavorful. My son commented on the generous amount of chicken in the sesame chicken. Definitely will visit again.

The staff was friendly. Ordering was easy. In my opinion, the aroma and look of the fried rice was more appetizing then the actual flavor/taste. I look forward to trying other items on their menu.

Extremely good food! We got the szichuan tofu and veggie fried rice for takeout. It was quick to be done, all veggies were super fresh, and the tofu texture was perfect. I only with they had vegetable (no meat) egg rolls!

I would not serve this to my PIGS! First, the place was filthy. My eggrolls were barely warm, and soggy.. The audacity to think they can put pictures of beautifully presented food on their webpages and then serve you food that doesn't even come close to it. What deception? The wontons they were soggy, and I believe it was cream, cheese, dip, tuna fish, water. And that's giving it a complement. The food was bland, low quality ingredients, shame on them for even attempting to call this food. The tea was served, lukewarm, and tasted stale. I would question the kitchen how clean it is, if you're going to compare it to the front of the restaurant ???? When talking to the management trying to explain the situation. sent out a person with a child's mentality, and the inability to see the problems within the organization. I've been blessed to eat around the world. I can honestly say this was the worst meal I've had in over a decade. This is an honest review. We were told that they're training somebody to cook in the back of the kitchen, and this is why the food that we received was what it was. Why would you use your customers as guinea pigs to teach somebody how to cook. Isn't that what the owners responsibility? It is to taste that food. Some of the lowest standards I've ever seen in a restaurant in my entire life. Considering everything that has happened. The way the food was presented the quality of the food. The cleanliness of the location I feel the Board of Health should inquire into their establishment if they are properly, addressing the needs of the public in the presentation. If you have a pallet, and understand quality and good food, avoid this place like the plague!!!! The positive reviews must be from people that are either friends family or just don't have a pallet. What a waste of money!

We just ate here for Christmas Eve - amazing!! So delicious and fresh. everything was awesome, best hot and sour soup I've ever had. We ordered a lot (family of 7) and every dish was amazing. Leo our server was so friendly and hospitable. Jan's friendliness on the phone was the reason we checked it out. Friendly staff, clean place, great food. We will be back!

The first few times we tried this place we were so excited! The food was amazing! Great vegetarian options. We went for dinner 4 times. The last two times we went for lunch and it was awful. They do not "wok" or stir fry the lunch portions. This time they also did not mix the sauces. I ordered a "sweet and tangy" sauced dish. They put sweet sauce on the bottom, (very few steamed but not cooked or mixed veggies on top--way less than expected) and chili sauce on top, again, not mixed. I've never come across this in any Chinese restaurant! They always flash cook the veggies and sauces in a wok--that's what gives the yummy taste. We may go back for dinner to see if it is a lunch issue or if they got a different cook. It's so disappointing because we had met the new family owners, which are the next generation of the past owner, and they were so great. I hope they consider changing the lunch preparation. I put three starts because it was so good before and I don't want to tank the rating.

I didn't know what to expect, but I saw the reviews and I've been to Pei's in the past, like 20 years ago. There's no good Chinese food in IC, so we drove up here. We nearly missed it, twice, because there's no lighted sign like every other business. Walked in and it was much smaller than I expected, but nearly full at the tables and the phone line. Waiter was a kid, probably still in HS. Behind the counter he didn't look like he knew what he was doing, but ended up providing excellent service. The menu was smaller than normal, but nicely pared down, even my vegetarian wife was pretty happy with choices. Food came fast enough and in the right order. Food was very good, even as leftovers. My only digs are the all-white front-of-house and the Asian kitchen staff (maybe original Pei cooks?). I just thought the division was strange. And the food came in strange take-out boxes, which I understand the practicality of, but it felt tacky. Overall, well worth the trip and will come back again.

Pei's is my favorite Chinese restaurant. They have the best egg rolls and crab raggoons, bar none. They have brought back all of my faves, and I try to eat here as much as possible.
