Essential Austin Indian Vegetarian Restaurant Swad Is Now Closed | Eater Austin

"One of Austin’s fundamental Indian and vegetarian restaurants, Swad closed its North Lamar location at 9515 North Lamar Boulevard on December 25, 2018, a move reported by Austin 360 and confirmed by the owners. The restaurant, which opened in 1996, is particularly known for stellar vegetarian Indian food with a strong focus on Southern Indian fare—plentiful dosas with fillings like potatoes, cheese, and onions, idlis, Indian-Chinese dishes, puris, and more. Swad is not gone forever: owners Manhar and Nikula Patel say they are opening a Round Rock location at 1401 South Highway 35, Suite 220, estimated to open in the second week of February." - Nadia Chaudhury

Such an amazing food truck that we discovered! I’ve honestly never had such delicious Indian food in the US. Everything is made completely from scratch, so the wait was a bit long—but the taste made it absolutely worth it. The person cooking was incredibly talented, managing so many customers while still making every single dish unbelievably tasty. Each bite took me straight back to India. The flavors were authentic, fresh, and full of love. The vibe of the place is wonderful too—an open setup with tables, great Indian music playing, and such a lively atmosphere. I truly hope they open a full restaurant soon so the chef can get some help serving the long lines of customers who clearly love his amazing food. Highly recommend this place if you’re craving real, authentic Indian street food! 🇮🇳✨

It was raining and I was craving something hot and spicy when I found this place. The chilli paneer momos hit me hard from the very first bite — perfectly crispy, spicy, and absolutely delicious. The food was amazing, and the atmosphere made the experience even better. Highly recommended!

As a vegetarian, I loved this veg only food truck where I can go on any day without worrying about cross contamination. Food is prepared fresh every day, and taste is delicious. The location and food truck setup is so good. Both the food at the truck and food catering is good. There are shelters with fans, and they place heaters when climate is clod, and at times we see fire pits to enjoy the warmth and food during cold evenins. They serve the food with great hospitality. There is mobile restroom, and it's clean and tidy all time.

We googled this place and just stepped in today. Absolutely loved the sitting with natural winds , lake view nice place for photos . Food is awesome , loved the taste. We ordered veg . Chili momos , masala dosa, Pani puri all those items will never disappoint. Check on website for more details/menu , we glad that we decided to come here today otherwise never discover the beauty only need a big banner out side, so can see easily from road. We will definitely go again and again , staff is friendly and gentle with providing us a warm welcome.

I had an amazing experience at Swad Mama! The idly, pani puri, and paneer dosa were absolutely fabulous fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. What impressed me the most was that they steam the idly instantly after taking the order and prepare every dish fresh on the spot, ensuring top-notch taste and quality. The service was just as wonderful. Rakesh was very polite and friendly, making the whole visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this place for anyone who loves authentic and freshly made Indian food!

Swad Mama is hands down going to be one of the best Indian spots in the entire US on my list. The food, music, ambience, and that gorgeous sunset view by the water made me fall in love with this place instantly. Their menu is refreshingly unique — the paneer and aloo tikki burgers are absolutely mouthwatering and packed with flavor. I loved watching them wrap momos fresh to order — that kind of transparency and commitment to freshness is rare these days. The chef-owners are clearly passionate about what they do, and it shines through in every bite. Oh, and the dosas are simply top notch!

We tried their special burgers aalloo tikki burger, paneer, schezwan Gobi burger with fries, ghee Karam dosa and momos, mango lassi with coffee. Everything was super, we really enjoyed the food. We were really happy with the service that too with good Hindi Bollywood music. Sure gonna come again!!
