Essential Austin Indian Vegetarian Restaurant Swad Is Now Closed | Eater Austin

"One of Austin’s fundamental Indian and vegetarian restaurants, Swad closed its North Lamar location at 9515 North Lamar Boulevard on December 25, 2018, a move reported by Austin 360 and confirmed by the owners. The restaurant, which opened in 1996, is particularly known for stellar vegetarian Indian food with a strong focus on Southern Indian fare—plentiful dosas with fillings like potatoes, cheese, and onions, idlis, Indian-Chinese dishes, puris, and more. Swad is not gone forever: owners Manhar and Nikula Patel say they are opening a Round Rock location at 1401 South Highway 35, Suite 220, estimated to open in the second week of February." - Nadia Chaudhury

It was raining and I was craving something hot and spicy when I found this place. The chilli paneer momos hit me hard from the very first bite — perfectly crispy, spicy, and absolutely delicious. The food was amazing, and the atmosphere made the experience even better. Highly recommended!

Swad Mama is hands down going to be one of the best Indian spots in the entire US on my list. The food, music, ambience, and that gorgeous sunset view by the water made me fall in love with this place instantly. Their menu is refreshingly unique — the paneer and aloo tikki burgers are absolutely mouthwatering and packed with flavor. I loved watching them wrap momos fresh to order — that kind of transparency and commitment to freshness is rare these days. The chef-owners are clearly passionate about what they do, and it shines through in every bite. Oh, and the dosas are simply top notch!

We tried their special burgers aalloo tikki burger, paneer, schezwan Gobi burger with fries, ghee Karam dosa and momos, mango lassi with coffee. Everything was super, we really enjoyed the food. We were really happy with the service that too with good Hindi Bollywood music. Sure gonna come again!!

We stumbled upon this place by accident, but it happened to serve Dosa—which we had coincidentally been trying at various spots over the past few weeks. It's located next to a Tiki bar with live music. I really enjoyed the food and service and plan to visit again on different days and at different times.

I tried Swad Mama food truck a couple of times early on and while it was decent then, I didn’t really like some of the stuff as much as I hoped I would. I went back today after a few months and really enjoyed the paneer burger and samosa chaat. Flavors, texture and spice were absolutely on point. Great place and definitely recommend!

I liked the ambience, the food was tasty as well, we tried veg chilli momos & masala Dosa, Both are worth a penny. Also we had aloo tikki Chaat, it gave a home made Chaat feeling. The staff is friendly. The menu is all vegetarian that's a surprise. Need to try other dishes as well, definitely will go back again.

The quantity of the samosa chaat was shockingly small—the photo attached shows the full portion, not something half-eaten. Very disappointing. The pungulu were extremely salty and had a bad taste overall. Not recommended.

The food here is incredible for the price! I love that you can grab a dosa at midnight right in the middle of Tampa/Clearwater/St. Pete, that alone makes this spot special. I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of it sooner. The service was excellent, the staff was super friendly, and the atmosphere was great. It’s such a nice experience enjoying authentic Indian food by the water. Highly recommend!
