Swagyu Debuts Japanese Barbecue in Pacific Beach As It Plots Even More Expansion | Eater San Diego

"I saw that Swagyu is headed to Maui, where it’s building a burger spot and butcher shop in Lahaina and planning additional locations across the Hawaiian Islands." - Candice Woo

Google
Decadent wagyu smash burgers and tremendous seasoned fries. Heart attack on a brioche bun territory, but that is a compliment. One of the best burgers I’ve had, and it was a wonderful offset to the seafood and fish we had most of our trip.

Mason C.

Google
When we went there, the food was fresh made and still warm. The thick curly fries where generously seasoned and crisp. The cheeseburgers were a slight bit oily and a bit too much sauce, but otherwise delicious. Despite being delicious, both the burgers and the fries were overpriced for what you receive, at $22 per burger. This took away one of the stars. Other than that, there was a nice, clean indoor area to eat in that was directly next to the food truck, which is a plus.

Google
1/2lb signature & western burger were both two thumbs up. Stellar bun, melty cheese, and nice char on the burger really hit all the burger spots. Would do it all over again.

My husband and I recently spent 2-weeks in Maui for our Honeymoon, and stopped here for lunch on a recommendation from a local. So good, we came back a second time before heading home! We tried the 1/4lb smash burger with Cheese Katsu, as well as the Western 🤤 these burgers are huge, so so delicious, and definitely worth it! Hopefully we’ll find our way back to Maui someday (or another Swagyu location) and would definitely make time to stop for another one of these burgers!

Google
After watching the videos I had to try the El Swagador and it was truly incredible. The combination of the burgers, cheese, pork belly, pickled jalapeños, and onions was just Magic! Next time I’m going to add the Katsu cheese! It made driving over from Kihei totally worth it! Highly recommended!

Google
Got the 1/2lb signature burger with katsu cheese. It was AMAZING. Was able to split it with my husband. Located at a near food truck lot.

Google
MUST GO! Wow! I personally love food trucks and have found some amazing food. This place however, blew my mind. There were 4 of us and we all got the burgers. And all 4 of us had to put our fingers up to stop each other from talking because we needed a minute to enjoy that first bite. This was hands down, the best burger I have ever had. I tried the signature burger. The fries are big enough to share. There are tables under the trees to sit at and some covered seats. Definitely do not skip this place.

Google
Fantastic burger. The 1/4 lb wasn't as thin as a typical smash, but it was perfectly cooked and went great with the delicious toasted bun, fresh pickles and their special sauce. Pro tip: Both the Sly Mongoose and Koholā Brewery allow outside food

Yelp
A5 Wagyu Smash Burgers? Sign me up everyday of the week! We were staying in the West Side of the island, and saw this place pop up on Yelp and knew I had to give it a try. I went all in and went with the 3x3 which in hindsight was way more than I needed. The meat is rich which means a single or 2x2 is all you need. The crisp on the smash was perfection and the bun was pillowy soft. The sauce complimented everything well. My only regret was not asking if they had Serrano peppers before I ordered bc that would've added a whole other level to an already amazing burger. $30 well spent. If you just look at the menu, you might have sticker shock, but they are using A5 meat for the burgers which is why its higher priced. Compare it to most food in the area, everything is overpriced bc it's touristy, at least at Swagyu you get a quality tasting meal. Worth every dime in my opinion. They have locations in San Diego as well, and all I could think of is how much money I'd spend if they had a spot up in the Bay. Smash burgers done right is so hard to find, if they had one in the Bay I'd be a regular here for sure.

Yelp
Straight up the best burger I've ever had. If you are a cheese fan and a burger fan you can't do better than this spot

Yelp
Often times when eating a burger, you very rarely get that feeling of "Oh, THIS is a burger" with how many fast food versions of it exist, bur Swagyy Hawaii is DEFINITELY one of those that gave me that feeling. Their classic burger, the cheese katsu, the western - all of them did not disappoint, and the staff were super friendly and the restaurant allowed for a great atmosphere and space to enjoy my food. Seriously recommend anyone looking to try some of the best quality burgers on Maui to visit Swagyu at least once and have their burgers change your life (you can even add and combine things together, like have the cheese katsu added with any of their burgers) - Miguel Morales Photography

Yelp
Their food truck is located in the old sugar cane train station in Lahaina! Nick the owner also came out for a quick chat and he was super friendly and showed his aloha. Glad to see more food trucks pumping out quality food and great service! They got a pretty straight forward menu, and a window that displays their wagyu, so it's no joke! We ordered a 1/4 lb wagyu smash burger and it was delicious! Wish we tried their sidewinder fries, overall, 10/10 and we'll be back for sure!

Yelp
First timer! I got the 1/4lbs Signature Burger and it was so delicious. Juicy, well seasoned, pickles were crunchy, buns soft and buttery. All around a very soft and tender burger. 10/10 The sidewinder fries are incredibly delicious. Inspired me to try and make them at home as a little reminder of Maui They give you enough Fries to satisfy even the biggest of appetites. (I'm 6'1 270lbs) The food does take a little bit of time to come out as everything is made to order! Staff was very friendly and helpful!

Yelp
As I sit here, recounting the epic journey my comrades and I embarked upon to taste the renowned burgers of Swagyu Hawaii, I can't help but feel a mix of exasperation and disappointment. This was a quest that spanned 45 minutes of winding roads, hungry stomachs, and hopeful hearts, only to culminate in the bitter realization that our coveted burger paradise was veiled behind the deceitful shroud of a closed sign. I had heard whispers of this legendary burger joint, where the sacred fusion of wagyu beef and Hawaiian flavors was said to create a divine gastronomic experience. My curiosity piqued, I rallied a band of culinary adventurers and set off on a pilgrimage to this hallowed ground of burger excellence. Alas, fate had other plans for us. Navigating through the labyrinthine alleys and neon-lit boulevards of Hawaii, we relied on the digital oracle of our times--the internet--to guide us to our destination. However, the digital whispers proved untrustworthy, for every website and social media platform sang a different song of operating hours. Foolishly, we chose to believe the most favorable of the bunch, and so we found ourselves salivating outside the doors of Swagyu Hawaii, only to be met with the grim sight of darkness within. As I leaned against the cold, locked door, I couldn't help but feel a sense of betrayal. How could a place so revered in the hearts of burger aficionados fail to present accurate operating hours to its devoted followers? Did they relish in the torment of hungry souls like ours, lured to their doorstep only to have the pleasure snatched away? I wondered if this was some kind of culinary prank, orchestrated by the malevolent gods of food. Yet, even in my disillusionment, I couldn't help but conjure up vivid fantasies of the burgers we were denied. Swagyu beef, tender and marbled, kissed by flames and cradled between perfectly toasted buns, crowned with the tropical symphony of Hawaiian flavors--pineapple slices, teriyaki glaze, perhaps a hint of smoky charred jalapenos to ignite the senses. My mouth watered at the mere thought. Oh, Swagyu Hawaii, your name will forever be etched in the annals of my misadventures. I will never know the true taste of your legendary burgers, but the legend itself will endure--a cautionary tale of internet follies and unfulfilled cravings. To all the weary travelers who might chance upon this review, learn from our tale of woe. Call ahead, confirm the elusive hours, and may your journey to Swagyu Hawaii be crowned with success where ours met a somber conclusion. As for me and my intrepid crew, we shall seek solace in another culinary escapade, for such is the essence of travel--embracing the unknown, savoring the unexpected, and, sometimes, lamenting the burgers that got away.

Yelp
Review for late March 2023 More sauce than burger. Got there and couldn't find the workers that were in the back prepping. It took some walking back and forth and waiving to get their attention since the bad 90s rock music was blaring and I didn't want to shout. I had a few questions about the sauce, as I have a food allergy, and the tattooed blonde guy (not the owner) was very unfriendly, almost menacing. He treated me if I was me as if I was stupid and a burden to assist. Being that we were the only customers during the prime lunch hour, you'd think they'd be happy to see us. Also, I'm from the bay, and my family is from HI, so trying to stare me down isn't going to fly. ANYWAAAY, I ordered the double patty to share with my husband, as a trial run. Between the completely crappy attitude of the cashier, and the overly greasy everything yet somehow dry and under seasoned burger patties, and the copious amounts of sauce that mostly just ran out everywhere and made a mess, I don't know if I'd go back. I was really excited for this place, as I love nothing more than a good greasy, juicy, indulgent burger, but the employee kinda soured the experience. I worked as a waitress for small family owned SF restaurants for over a decade, and hate to write bad reviews, but the employee's attitude alone made me feel so unwelcome, and there are plenty of other places on the island to try.

Yelp
Amazing, Amazing! We had the 4x4, 3x3, Smash Burger, Cheese Katsu and Sidewinder Fries. I am not a burger fan only because of having to watch calories and eat healthier..... but.... This was an exception. Glad I took the plunge and indulged. Every bite was worth every calorie. Hehe. More than the burger which was the BEST, MOSELY who took our order was outstanding. Warm, kind and made our swagyu experience incredible. Thank you to the chefs and most of all to, Mosely. You made our night.

Yelp
These burgers don't taste like they contain 100% wagyu beef anymore. I eat a lot of wagyu, so I know how the mouthfeel should be. Taste like regular ground beef with wagyu fat or something. Checked with some sources and seems like this may be what is going on in the beef patty formulation to lower the cost and increase profit margins on these burgers. The burgers aren't bad tasting but not too different than In and Out, just more melted fat. Consumer beware! Don't buy these thinking you are eating wagyu beef.

Yelp
I'm not a burger fan. SWAGYU made me one. It's the best burger I've ever had. It is Bursting with flavor, has the best meat a secret special sauce, and delicious pickles. it's a burger to die for! The owners care about quality and customer opinions. If you come to Maui it's A Place to GO for BURGER Didn't try the fries but they are unique and they look crispy and delicious Thank YOU Swagyu!

Yelp
Oh my! This place is ridiculously delicious. I've lived in Maui a few years and am so sad I'm barely reviewing. It's too good not to though. The burgers are so juicy and sweet. My mouth waters thinking about them! They are pricey.. but worth it to splurge. You won't regret it. The keiki was good enuf size for me.. it's a pretty big burger you will be satisfied. Also, don't forget to order the fries!

Yelp
This place was so good! I had a burger and it was amazing! This place is a little bit pricey, but it's well worth it!

Yelp
Great portion of Wagyu burger with cheese Katsu for its price ($20 before tax/tips). Really hit the spot! Could have used a bit more of salt or hot sauce if available though. Overall, a solid place to stop by for a quick and delicious burger!
google avatar

Cory F.

Yelp
Best burger I've ever had. Like I always say in regard to burgers, ITS ALL ABOUT THE MEAT, and these guys do it right! I just wish it was easier to get from Seattle lol
google avatar

Trace G.

Yelp
50 bucks for a couple average burgers and fries. Price, customer service, fries, brioche bun, and wagyu burger were all meh. Sauce and katsu cheese were good. Sauce was basically like a copycat Cane's sauce, and katsu cheese was a panko-crusted fried cheese patty of American, cheddar and pepper jack. Unfortunately, the burger patty itself was the biggest bummer. I was expecting to have one of the best, juiciest, and most flavorful burgers I've ever tasted, but putting wagyu in a beef patty was a waste. Patty was surprisingly flavorless, unseasoned, and dry. It sat like a lump in my throat, I had to drink so much water with it, lol. I've had tastier burgers for a fraction of the price at the old Cow Pig Bun joint, Five Guys, Cool Cat, Teddy's, and even Carl's Jr. and Burger King.

Yelp
Welcome to flavortown!!! If you didn't know you do now.

Kea G.

Yelp
Everytime we come the guy working is so kind we really appreciate nice business owners plus the food is impeccable (everyone in Maui knows this already) The best quality meat and fries thank you so much for the aloha

Yelp
Went by today at 1130. Heard from the food truck next to them that they are closed while they get ready to move to a new location. Didn't see anything on their website about that just be aware I don't think they're open right now.
google avatar

Dom V.

Yelp
The best burger I've ever had. Mosley was so hospitable...super kind dude. Would recommend this place to anyone who visits Maui and loves burgers!

Sean L.

Yelp
This place is GARBAGE. We got FOOD POISONING after eating one of their 3x3s. Their employees are DIRTY as HELL not washing their hands after they wipe their ASS! Only after this review , mabye they'll start washing their hands. For the low price of $70, you can get your stomach turned inside out shitting soft serve for DAYS with a side of fries. If i wanted that, i couldve went to ARBYS, matter of fact they better than these mid ass burgers! L food truck. Wouldnt lie to yall

Christy D.

Yelp
Great burger & fries!! The burger was juicy had a great taste, great pickles and so worth the price! We will be back on our next visit to Maui! Go give it a try!!

Dina E.

Yelp
HELLA good smash burgers. Awesome quality and flavors. Cooked to perfection. Loved it and one of my favorite finds in Maui.
google avatar

Ty F.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. A very simple and tasty burger, juicy and bursting with flavor.
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
So they were closed when we got there even though they were supposed to be open. Then we see 2 men on a table in swagyu gear. To my families surprise as we were looking for some life inside the trailer we hear one of the guys say to the other " well i hope you speak spanish" then they look towards us and laugh. It took everything inside me to keep my cool and ignore the racist comment We will never support them or any of their establishments on the island or mainland.
google avatar

Kenny B.

Yelp
Hands down the best burger I have ever had! Dudes were great and service was top notch. We'll definitely be back next week (or tomorrow) for the western!
google avatar

Myla S.

Yelp
Delicious burgers and great service! Just like the one in Imperial Beach! Thanks Moseley!
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
It's all about the Burger........... it's beefy and brawny all in one! My only real issue isn't with Swagyu... it's with Wagyu style ground beef, kind of an oxymoron for me, if I mix regular ground beef to a 70/30 doesn't that make it wagyu???

P M.

Yelp
It's unfortunate this place was lost to the Lahaina fires. I'm glad I got to try it a couple of times but this was by far one of the best burgers I've ever had.
google avatar

Jasper A.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best burgers, if not the best, I have had in my life. The wagyu beef was so soft I did not even recognize I was biting into it... thinking it was just the bun. The softest beef patty in a burger I have had hands down. Their secret sauce was amazing and the bun made it even more delicious. Ordered the fries since I wanted something more from the menu not because I was hungry but just craving for some more food from their cuisine. The fries were outstandingly seasoned and was delicious even without the sauces provided (ketchup and a secret sauce). I made a real connection with the owner. He was such a genuinely great guy that just loves what he does and loves wagyu. The overall experience was really outstanding!
google avatar

Christopher R.

Yelp
Straight fire burgers .... A must the best burger joint on the island.... .... To fire to take a pic straight devoured !! Keep these friendly guys here man!!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Straight up, the burgers smack! Excited to come back and grab a steak to grill at home

Alan M.

Yelp
Awesome burgers!!! Nuff said. More words because I have to: - great beef - great sauce - balanced toppings

Lanell A.

Yelp
Definitely recommend! Got two burgers, a cheese sandwich and fries to go. We eat a plant based diet, so we were a bit out of our realm. Our son was following this new eatery on Instagram and told us we had to try it, so we did. Really yummy, good sauces, good fries. Lots of food. Normally burger places don't make a cheese sand, so I was pleasantly surprised. I was planning to just eat fries. The staff was really friendly and enthusiastic. They also gave us a little gummy candy burger, not sure if it was because my young daughter was there, but it was a nice touch. I read somewhere they just took over the old Sugar Cane Train station, I think for seating only. Anyway, definitely worth a try!

Daniel M.

Yelp
The burgers are awesome I've graduated to the half pound from the quarter pounder no pickles. The crew is awesome they'll shoot the shit with you talk story while you wait you can't go wrong it's a great burger the one thing I wish they would do is like a sautéed onions but it's their place I'll let them run with it. Just don't be that guy that brings up his own sauce to have them cook the burgers in it or put it on the burger‍‍ Burger:5/5 Staff:6/5
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
Awesome burgers and wonderful staff. Thank you for bringing the best burgers to west side!

B. J.

Yelp
I have heard so much about wagyu beef and how good it was we had to try this food truck while visiting the beautiful island of Maui. Unfortunately I do not see what the hype is all about. The burger was good, but I have had better! Perhaps it was just an off night for them. The burger was crispy and seemed to be over cooked. Wagyu has been described to me as "melt in your mouth" but this was not that. We were disappointed in this visit. Again, the burger was good, the fries were good, but I have to say I have had better. Honestly, it tastes like a Freddie's Steak Burger if you have ever had that!

Nico N.

Yelp
Love the burgers, but you guys are never open. My family is visiting and has been so excited to try your food. Monday and Tuesday it says you are closed and today is Wednesday and you are also closed. It's 2:37 in the afternoon. Fix your hours of operation. Very disappointed my family didn't get to try your food since they leave island early
google avatar

Issac W.

Yelp
The burger is absolutely delicious. The restaurant owner is very hands on with the customer. The juicy beef and the simplicity of the burger is authentic which is the togo place if you want a legit burger on the island. Will get another burger before I leave to Los Angeles. However an issue arises as I waited for my burger over 30mins however the owner made it out and took care of me.

Josh R.

Yelp
Hands down best burger you will ever eat. Must stop every time in Maui. Fries are killer too

Megan C.

Yelp
Incredibly disappointed. We tried coming here on Wednesday and they were closed. No sign. Nothing on their website. Tried again Sunday at 5:30, closed again. Now we leave tomorrow (Monday) and still don't get to check it out.

Mary A.

Yelp
If you want the best burger on the island go here!! Take it over to Koholā brewery to enjoy with a cold craft beer! You can't beat it!

L S.

Yelp
This was a recommendation from a tour guide and we love food trucks. The real winner here is their fries. Super tasty, flavorful and nicely cooked. The burgers were good. I think there should be options for lettuce and tomato as well as cooking them a smidge less so they are more juicy. The secret sauce was good but overwhelmed the cheese and burger flavor. I probably wouldn't go back. Staff was friendly and came over to check on those eating. Worth the try.

She C.

Yelp
I've been to Thailand and THIS is the best I've ever had! And we go all over the country. So glad we stumbled upon this stop. Highly recommend!! Fast and friendly service. Very clean

Mike J.

Yelp
Awesome burgers. A little pricey especially for a food truck but the burgers were great.

Hue G.

Yelp
These guys honestly all have the worst attitudes. Fresh off the jet haole/mainland style. Every time your ordering it's like you're bothering them. Sunglasses/, no smile, bad tone of voice, then they got the nerve to ask for a tip on the screen. I can look past the owners cheesy online presence but rude people at the register when I'm dropping 80 bucks is lame.

Pena H.

Yelp
Best burgers I've had ,melts in your mouth. The service was fast also . The prices were worth it.

Jess B.

Yelp
Killer burgers and fries seasoned to perfection! They also have steaks to take home that are incredible!!! This place is a must try.
