Roswell’s Greenwoods and Swallow at the Hollow Have Closed | Eater Atlanta

"Launched in 1999 as the founder’s barbecue joint, this barbecue spot closed permanently on December 31, 2017 according to a pre-recorded message that thanked patrons. A sister business to the longtime Southern comfort restaurant, its closure has been attributed by local restaurateurs to the owner’s retirement after a 30+ year career and a possible sale of the property." - Beth McKibben

My first visit to Swallow At The Hollow was positive. This spot has a local dive bar feel, with friendly staff. It can get a bit noisy if there's a sporting event on TV. The menu features plenty of Baltimore and Eastern Shore classics, such as cream of crab soup, crab cakes, and hand-cut French fries. The fries were fantastic – perfectly fried and even better with malt vinegar. I had the soft-shell crab sandwich special (not on menu) which came on toast with mayo. I asked them to bring it on new bread, which they did without issue because I didn't know it came with mayo. A brioche roll would be a nice touch, but the sandwich was still delicious. The tomato slices were ripe, the pickle spear was good, and drink refills were timely. I also tried my friend's French onion soup, which was a bit too salty for my taste and had some Italian seasoning on top that didn't quite fit. Maybe less salt and no Italian seasoning would improve it. Prices were very reasonable, and I'd definitely return. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'd recommend Swallow At The Hollow to anyone looking for a nice local spot.

Awww, Loved it here. Stopped past on a late Sat afternoon with a gud friend after a movie @ Senator Theatre. Cute Cozy little Neighborhood Bar/Pub Dive located within Belvedere Square area here in Baltimore. Very Often, the simplest places are some of The Best food & service. Just come in, sit somewhere; we had no long wait. I discovered why they are Food Network Approved. ✌️ Menu was adequate. They do have Specials. Food didn't take that long but I can imagine when swamped might take longer: Worth the Wait though. This is some Delicious Home Cookin;' Not Fast Food. There is Care Put Into the food: You Can See & Taste it. Very Cool, Laid-Back, Fun & Friendly Vibe. Not too crowded but still a decent amount of ppl relaxing, eating, enjoying. You will feel Comfortable here no matter who you are. Genuinely Cool Staff who are Nice, Friendly, & Efficient without being intrusive; they really take Care of u too. Food was gr8! Everything came very warm almost hot. Quality meal & ingredients. 1 of THE BEST Crabcakes in town: Seasoned & Broiled to Perfection. Nice & Moist, tender : DELICIOUS. Never had a cake seasoned (SO Flavorful) that way + nice amount of crab w/ minimal filler. Luv the crispy fries w/a bit of potato skin. Nothing was oversalted which is happening in far too many restaurants now. Good Portions. Tasty Wings & Fries. Reasonable Prices. Clean. Not TOO Loud. Temp inside not too hot or chilly but just right. You can sit back watch games/TV and/or just Chill & Talk. They were having a contest for Orioles Game and if you guessed the right #, u got a free drink. Another Hidden Gem here in Bmore. Will Be Back: Totally Recommend!💯✌️👍

Google
If you're looking for a true dive bar experience this is one of the best I have had. The bartender was great, giving excellent recommendations, friendly, and happy to help. And then the food came out!! we split the crab cake sandwich and steak wrap which were both phenomenal!!! Flavors were on point and portions were perfect. Highly recommend seeking out the #DDD location if you're in the area.

Google
Stopped here on a whim. This was a great little neighborhood bar that has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Food Network. I was super excited to try the Rueben. Sadly it was just ok. Plain lunch meat corned beef and not nearly enough rose marie sauce. Also a thinker cut of marble rye would add some support to this sandwich. The Steak Wrap which was featured on Triple D also was lackluster. The steak was chewy and was not seasoned at all. This wrap also needed more salsa. The wings were delicious but alas needed more sauce for my tastes. The place was packed and it was hard to find a seat. Also the food and alcohol prices were absolutely phenomenal!

Kevin H.

Google
The wings were great. Decent price drinks and food. It's a little tight, but it gives it that charm of a Baltimore bar.

Lyle S.

Google
Neighborhood bar with some really great tasting food. The Maryland Crab soup was really good. The steak wrap was very tasty and filling. A lot of the other food I saw coming out of the kitchen looked really good. Place was packed and lively.

Google
It was nice spending time with my mom. We really like this place. And it's always nice for her, and I to see her old friend that works here.

Google
This is Baltimore's best bar food and an awesome atmosphere. Try the Swallow Tots and the cream of crab soup.... They are amazing! Update: As popular as ever! Great food and cold beer :)

Yelp
One of our favorite spots to have dinner before a movie at The Senator! Any food item I've had is always delicious and cooked well. This past visit I had the sliders- cooked perfectly- and French fries. Add on a few cheap bohs and it was a perfect night! They have a decent selection of draft beer, good food, great bartenders. Not much more you can ask for! This place has local flavor. We were invited to join a first inning bet on the orioles which of course my friend won a free beer off of. Seats are limited, and the space is a little tight, but I highly recommend checking this spot out.

Yelp
If you like dive bars and good wings, cold beer and good service this is your place. First of all it's small inside. The bar seats maybe 7 people. You can feel the vibe of Baltimore in this place. It's a ride for me. I live in Northern Virginia. I went April 1 . It was a nice ride, I found a place to park a block away (pay to park kiosk). It's lunch time and there's a few people inside. I grab a seat at the bar and order a Yuengling. I peruse the menu and decide on the wings. (This is really why I went). There's a few TVs behind the bar to watch, a few more people come in and grab seats. The beer is going down fast so the bartender comes over and I order another. Service is pretty good. She is helping tables with food and drink plus the bar patrons. Wings are up pretty fast, hot and fresh. They smell amazing. Definitely worth the trip. Fresh cooked, seasoned perfectly. The ranch is just enough to handle the amount of wings. Celery and a few carrot sticks compliment the feast. The beer is gone again and I order one more. I get tee plus my check, pay and I'm out the door. Definitely will be back. A solid 9/10 for quality, price, service and taste.

Yelp
Amazing spot to hang in Baltimore. The food specials can't be beat anywhere in the city. You can get super cheap and filling burgers or cheesesteaks along with a cold drink to wash it off. The spicy wings pack a punch. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
Swallows has great staff that makes you enjoy the great beverages and bar food even more! One of my favorite local spots where I can find consistent good food and drinks for reasonable prices. Don't sleep on their chicken wings. Top 5 in Baltimore!

Yelp
Finally I got to try this bar and grill. It's a small place with barstool seating and about 8 tables for groups to sit together. I heard about it when it was featured on TV a few years ago, so I bookmarked it on Yelp. Maryland is known for their crab cakes, the taste test was on! I ordered a crab cake sandwich, a cup of crab chowder and a beer. The restaurant has been in business since the 1940s, but acquired by the current owner in 2011. The menu was immediately upgraded from serving ready made (frozen) bar food to freshly made scratch soups, salads, sandwiches, and popular chicken wings with their secret "ghost" pepper sauce. The crab cakes were tasty, delicious and a must try. The vibe was buzzing with jukebox music playing on a busy Saturday night. It was worth the trip and I would definitely return again to have made to order crab cakes and wings. When you're in the area, give them a try and don't forget to tell 'em Rosemary sent ya!

Yelp
Best dive bar around. Boh dog special during an O's game is spectacular. This visit we added orders of onion rings and curly fries. They were excellent. The bartender did a great job of tending to us at the bar and the remainder of patrons seated at the tables.
google avatar

Yuteng W.

Yelp
came here with friends for some late night bites and it's a very traditional sports bar with proper seating for diners as well. i got the ghost pepper wings that were the perfect spice level and zing. i will say they were a little over cooked making the meat a little tough and dry but overall was some of the better wings i've had. friends also enjoyed their meals and service was very friendly and nice!

Yelp
Good neighborhood bar with variety of food and drinks. Busy and folksy. Like to drop in every so often.

Yelp
What a great place!! Don't miss this true dive bar where the food speaks for itself!!

Yelp
This is a bat with a small section where you can sit and order food. We went here because of Guy Fiery's recommendation so to speak. They were featured by him. Didn't expect the Swallow at the Hollow to be this small. But who cares, it's the experience and the hope of some good food. There is street side parking but you must pay and many of the meters are broken. The food is good, but not as good as Guy made me believe when I saw the episode online. Never the less it was another experience on the long list I carry. Steak wrap aka burrito was good, company was great, and the experience can't be undone, I swallowed it at the Hollow.

Yelp
Update: Still a regular here, we come every 2-3 weeks. We never tire of the great food and amazing service.

Yelp
Just my type of place. Good food. Good service, good drinks and a chill crowd. Wish there were more of these places around.

Yelp
Stopped by to watch bball game with friend and found seats at bar. Great bartender that was waiting on entire place. We had wings and Natty Bohs. Wings were awesome (asked for crispy and they were) and beers were cold. Very reasonable tab. I told my wife that everyone needs a place like this near their home!! 5 stars again.
google avatar

Enola C.

Yelp
Great place for a good burger & Drinks. Awesome place for locals (nostalgic) is what they call it, I can go along with that because it is always clean and they have great food. They usually have two people working the bar and waiting on tables, the food is cooked downstairs separately and sent up. Service is very good, but as I said, limited to two people usually no matter how crowded or empty it is ! To their defense of only having two people at a time working they are always on top of their game and are excellent with service.

Yelp
This place smacks of being a local dive, no offense intended, it's small, dark, comfortable place to gather with friends. This was a weekday lunchtime visit, there were a few people there and soon became a spot to congregate. Lots of laughter and camaraderie. As you come in there is a chalkboard of daily specials along with the back of the menu. Prices are not updated on the internet for the specials. Our server was running the floor and she was very efficient and checked back just the right number of times. We did not order anything with alcohol, but there was a very extensive list of beers posted. They serve wine as well. Our order seemed to take a long time coming. I ordered the ghost honey wings (8)., the server said they were spicy and yes, they did build up heat as time went on, I managed 4, served with ranch dressing. My husband ordered the burger special, $9.50, loaded came with French fries and coleslaw. The fries were good but a bit wilted. All in all a good experience, be aware, parking is difficult, we resorted to park below where the shops are.

Aga F.

Yelp
Not sure if it's the Guy Fieri hype or just misplaced enthusiasm, but I'm scratching my head over the rave reviews. The place has a laid-back dive bar vibe that feels right at home in the ever 'up-and-coming' Belvedere neighborhood, but the experience left much to be desired. On a busy Burger Night Wednesday, I made the fatal mistake of ordering the crabcake--a decision that left my Maryland pride in shambles. Dry, flavorless, and downright disrespectful to the state's legacy. To make matters worse, the service was shockingly sub-par. Despite sitting at the bar directly in front of two bartenders, I felt invisible. Stick to the burgers if you're feeling lucky, but don't expect the hype to translate into Maryland pride or quality.

Yelp
Cold beer at a great price! Atmosphere and service great! French onion soup delicious, salad fresh, wings sweet and spicy and cooked perfect.
google avatar

Yelp
In a way, I'm glad I didn't know I had the most perfect late night chicken sandwiches within walking distance. This place is highly underrated. What a gem! I wish I took a picture-our food was perfect.
google avatar

Clifton C.

Yelp
I was looking forward to a nice casual meal and walking into the olde style pub atmosphere made this seem promising. Alas, it was a little bit of a disappointment. I expectantly ordered the shrimp Po' boy which turned out to be a little dry, so nothing really adhered to the roll making it difficult to eat. The flavor was okay and the draft beer was cold and fresh tasting. The staff was attentive and cordial, and responded graciously to my disappointment.
google avatar

Evan F.

Yelp
I have a go to order. Ghost pepper honey wings and loaded tots. This is a guilty pleasure of mine and when they are done right the order is great. The issue is consistency seems like it's a hit a two third of a time. My picture is a miss. These "loaded" tots aren't very loaded. It seems like when the day is slow the quality is on point if they are slightly busy it's very hit or miss. I love what swallow represents but wish their food was more consistent.
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
This is a consistently solid local joint, super small. Right now it is a Wednesday night at 6 pm and it is packed with about 40 people but super comfortable and chill. Age avg is 30's. Food is good, beer selection is unusually large. Been here for decades. Just go.
google avatar

Chloe S.

Yelp
Thankful that they're open late! The space inside is kind of small, but cozy. There were two tables left when we were there last Friday around 10pm. I got the Asian wings, my date got the chicken cheesesteak. I asked for my wings crispy, but they weren't. I was bummed about that, but was too hungry to send them back. The flavor of wings was good though. I asked for the honey reaper sauce on the side to try and it was definitely spicy! I was happy to try it, but happier I didn't get the wings coated in it, it's exactly as it sounds- very honey flavor at the front end lots of spice at the tail end. The chicken cheesesteak was fine, the fries were good & probably the best part of the meal. I'd come again for late night eats and drinks, but would choose somewhere else during normal dining hours.

Yelp
My wife and I came here about 3pm on a Tuesday before going to our hotel near BWI for the night. My wife had checked the reviews and commented that it was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We checked online and it aired on DDD in November of 2014, we figured go for it! The place still gets very good reviews. It was not very busy and we had a seat at the bar. There is also a small dining area on the other side of the half wall. They proudly feature National Bohemian beer originally brewed in Baltimore and known locally as Natty Boh. It was first brewed in 1885. We started with an order of the pepperjack cheese balls which are served with cocktail sauce. The cheese balls were crunchy on the outside, very tasty and you get a lot of them. We had noticed the food came upstairs from the basement via a dumbwaiter. We asked about it and were told it was one of only four manual dumbwaiters in the state of Maryland. My wife ordered the steak wrap aka burrito which was featured on DDD. I decided to get a bacon cheeseburger. Our food was delivered in a timely fashion, looked and tasted good. My wife said the burrito was delicious. Our server was very attentive and filled my wife's iced tea three times. Overall a great experience!
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
Found this place because it was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners Drive Ins and Dives. It definitely lives up to the hype! It has a very "divey"/chill feel inside and was full on a Wednesday night. However, it was not noisy/loud at all and you can easily hold a conversation. They have a board with a very large menu of drafts (probably 15-20). Started with crab balls which, were amazing - basically all crab and no filler! We also got the ghost honey wings, buffalo boneless wings, and swallow fries (melted cheese with bacon and ranch on the side). Everything was finger-licking good. I can't wait to come back and try other things on the menu.
google avatar

Adria B.

Yelp
Great place for happy hour drinks and appetizers in the local neighborhood. Came here after work one day to meet with some colleagues and we had a great time! The taps were good, the appetizers were tasty and I didn't have to spend an arm and a leg. Parking can be annoying depending on the time of day, though. Always a good time!

Emily D.

Yelp
Idk if someone new was cooking tonight or what but my go-to comfort order (steak burrito) was NOT its typical magnificence, so disappointing. I don't think they cooked it long enough. The cheese wasn't melted, none of the flavors were melded together like usual, and the sliced steak...wasn't sliced, just these giant lumps of undercooked steak that was difficult to chew and swallow. So disappointing!!! Idk if I can ever order it again if it's gonna be like this

Scott H.

Yelp
Great food....Service...and just a fun night out. Loved my time there with my buddy. Loads of regulars all having a laugh watching the baseball.

Jack M.

Yelp
Classic dive bar. A Baltimore classic you have to go to if your in town. Such a great atmosphere to catch a game and some classic dive bar door.
google avatar

Jillian S.

Yelp
Returned here about a year after my first visit. The food continues to be delicious, portioned well, and reasonably priced. Yet again I ordered the crab cake sandwich since I knew it would be good and it was. Crab cakes are usually packed with other filler ingredients, but not these. Swallow at the Hollow's crab cakes are full of real crab and come with tartar sauce, coleslaw, a pickle, and a side. This time we brought along some others and a couple of them also chose the crab cake sandwiches. One of them chose the Reuben and enjoyed it. The onion rings and the tator tots are super crispy, just how we like them. The menu is short, available online, and easy to read. Ordering take out orders over the phone is quick and simple. Overall, we continue to recommend this restaurant and would eat here again!

Yelp
I'm glad one of Baltimore County's finest introduced me to this place! A cop friend of mine invited me out to this quaint spot for drinks the first time a few months ago. As we looked around the room, many of the seats were filled. I didn't quite expect that for such a small establishment during Covid. This made me plenty nervous. But everyone stayed to themselves and there wasn't very much mingling--which I actually appreciated. The crowd looked mixed. There were some other officers, some young people, and some old people. So I definitely couldn't just look around and tell for sure what kind of spot this is. I had to get to know the staff in order to get the personality. The staff is insanely kind! Not to mention, they know good eats. I tried the wings, curly fries, and crab cake. I wasn't expecting much. But the food goes beyond standard bar fare. SATH brings flavor, balance, and interest to each dish on the menu. I had no clue they'd been on Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives a few years back. But it made perfect sense. After I ate well and chatted the staff up, I became a believer. I've been back at least 3x since that first time. It's certainly the kind of place where you eventually want everyone to know your name.

Lindsay C.

Yelp
Heard a lot of good things about this place and was looking for a nice, easy meal after work, yet somehow I'm unsure if I spent less time with food in front of me or less time receiving any form of service from the staff. Besides, waiting over 20mins before being able to put in a food order (which I get if you're busy), my food was cold in the middle. For context, all of the meatballs in my sub were cold in the middle. After finally being able to flag down a staff member, because nobody came to check in on us, my food was sent back to the kitchen and it never came back out. I never received an update or an apology, and there seemed to be no sense of urgency. At one point, one of the staff came over and asked how everything was, when I mentioned my food was cold and went back to the kitchen he said, "Oh" then continued clearing tables. An hour and a half is too long to wait for food and any service update, especially at a bar. Sadly, I wouldn't return to this place as it felt clear that regular patrons were being taken care of, and my table was being ignored.

Yelp
Atmosphere was perfect, staff was very inviting, and crab cake was delicious! Glad I gave them a try.

Yelp
The ambience here is fantastic. I felt like i would be accosted if I was a woman, but that's how i like my restaurants. I got a cheesesteak, and let me tell you, it is one of the best I've had in Baltimore. I have tried over 48 cheesesteak and it is ranked in the top 5 for suresies. Anyways, come down and swallow some food.

Yelp
Meaning to try this place since we moved down to Baltimore 4 years ago after watching it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Stopping in on a Saturday night around 6:30-7:00 it was busy but we were able to get a seat at the bar after a 10 minute wait. The bartender, an older man, was a perfect bartender for a long running college town dive bar, quick witty. We had a couple of beers which was great and watched the basketball game. We ordered wings (buffalo) and curly fries to start which were both very good! Then we ordered meals of a crab cake sandwich and Steak wrap aka burrito. I have to say the crab cake was one of the best I have had and the burrito was very good as well. Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere for a dive bar. Would absolutely recommend this place, we came in after a few breweries that we went too so it made for a great way to cap our evening with some food and a last beer or two.

Yelp
I moved to the Towson area a little over a year ago. I wanted to find a spot to watch the Kentucky Derby and this was very close to my apartment so I decided to go in for a drink and to enjoy the race. I didn't know it at the time but this place has become my second home. I can't say enough good things about this place. What I believe carries this establishment is the staff. John, Jeremy, Erin amongst others are one of the best bar staffs I have ever seen. They go above and beyond to make sure your experience is top notch. They know the perfect balance of bar small talk so it doesn't make you feel pressured. The food is...OUTSTANDING... everything is cooked to perfection. The daily specials are unbelievable. I recommended the regular or chicken cheesesteak. But the burgers are also high level. The wings are bigtime with a variety of flavors for any occasion. There is always a great variety of drinks choices. Whether it's a local brewery to the Budweiser. COLD & REFRESHING In closing, the Swallow at the Hollow is the Towson / North Baltimore area's hidden gem. I would compare it to Andre Iguodala. At one time an a All-star but even today, still one of the most reliable guys in the league. Does the job every time.
google avatar

Dylan A.

Yelp
their wings are seasoned/cooked wonderfully I have never had bad food from here, their service is amazing they make it feel like your apart of the community. it is kinda loud so I would not recommend going with a baby since there is sports going on and you know it is very competitive.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
The definition of a dive and in that sense, perfect in every way. It's the kinda place that they learn your name by the second time you visit. Go for the honey ghost wings - they are spicy (3.5 or 4/5) but not mouth destroying with a great peppery flavor. Limited but good selection of beer on tap with many more bottled. Come by to watch an Oriole's game and get a $5 chili cheese dog with a Natty Boh' beer.

Candice S.

Yelp
Swallow at the Hollow is consistently good, and a great atmosphere for lunch, dinner or a drink. Their servers and bartenders are some of the friendliest people you will meet. The regulars at the bar often look over and wave when someone new walks in. Between my husband and I, we've probably had almost everything on the menu at one time or another. It's all good. Classic bar food, very well executed.
google avatar

Shelly B.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood bar with a large beer selection and outrageously good bar food. Their wings and cheesesteaks are always great. Love the fact that they have CURLY FRIES as well. Don't see them at too many places. Their peel and eat shrimp is a huge portion that comes with potatoes and corn. Would definitely describe this as a dive but it's clean and the service is always fast and friendly.

Kat T.

Yelp
Food is consistently good. Pretty much always get wings. I don't really dine in often but when i have they have a good beer selection.

Yelp
A cozy, friendly, usually quiet, neighborhood pub in north Baltimore City, with very good food and fair prices. The nearest parking is metered, on Northern Parkway. The pub is next to the popular Belvedere Square and a block from the historic Senator Theatre.

M P.

Yelp
Best wings - amazing - 5 stars!!!! Can't really comment on anything else as it was takeout.

Laura M.

Yelp
Great food, great service! Best burgers, cheesesteaks and fries. It's our local go to!!!

Yelp
This place appears to be holding up after Toms departure. Many are worried and keeping a watchful eye on all developments. Things will get dicey as his sense of "humor" isn't around for sports championships that he has no interest in. Long live Tom.
google avatar

Yelp
Infamous bar and food joint with first class food. This is in the heart of a small upscale food and shopping district, a few hundred yrads from Clarks Burgers. While they have no poitie, they certainly have a selection. This includes ribs and their famous burgers. Our service was no nonsense and straightforward, as the whole business appeared to be handled by two peopke. Selections were suggested, and the beer was good. Wings wre good, but the cheese steak was in need of a trip to philly to refresh the idea. Eat well, tip well.

David H.

Yelp
Hidden gem! By far the best bar/restaurant in the area with great food and drinks at reasonable prices. Everything is great on the menu, but my favorites are the wings (any flavor), rueben, and the burrito. Natty Boh seems to have a direct pipeline to the factory. It just tastes better here!

Yelp
My bf and I live close by and had driven by soo many times. One Saturday night around 10pm we decided to stop in. We sat at the bar as a couple was leaving as we walked in. There were some folks standing. You wouldn't tell by the looks of it but the food is delicious. I think I had a cheesesteak sandwich and it was soo good it actually caught me off guard. The drinks are old fashioned and no-fuss so u have to know what u want to drink before you come in. There is no drink menu. But if u like simple foods and simple drinks done right, for the right price, this is a great neighborhood gem. We both had two drinks and a meal and we left with a tab under $50. Can't beat that.

The server was cool. Even though we got there right l when the kitchen closed, he did his best to make sure we had everything else we wanted
