Chinatown Dim Sum Specialist Impérial is Relocating to Brossard | Eater Montreal

"Located on the sixth floor of St-Laurent Street’s Swatow Plaza, Impérial is a three-year-old dim sum specialist whose spacious banquet hall has long been a place to polish off dish after dish of steamed shrimp dumplings, barbecue pork buns, and plenty of other dim sum. I report that owners Josh Hsieh and Kyle Cheung were told in July they must vacate because the building is being redeveloped for condos, but the landlord later revised the timeline so the Chinatown location can remain open until at least the end of November and potentially through the holidays. It’s a popular Chinatown spot facing the sort of displacement that has alarmed community members and activists as the neighbourhood undergoes gentrification." - Valerie Silva

Montreal Chinatown Restaurant Imperial Robbed During Curfew | Eater Montreal

"A neighbouring barbecue counter owned by one of Impérial’s proprietors, Charsiu was shown in the same photos to be in total disarray on the ground floor of Swatow Plaza and was affected by the same theft; security footage indicates masked figures broke into the Saint-Laurent Boulevard space and removed a cash drawer containing $500 in about a minute. The owner says the thieves exploited the emptier streets caused by the province-wide curfew, and the incident adds costs and safety concerns to businesses in Chinatown that have already faced vandalism and break-ins since the start of the pandemic." - Valerie Silva

The place was quite nice. The service is very fast, even a little bit too huried at times, but the food is really worth the long wait that you might have to do at the front door. Also, they have several portion sizes, which is perfect for a couple like us that eat in very different quantities.

This plaza is not very big or stylish. It mainly features Chinese stores and the main focus is on Chinese products.

Bathroom code upstairs (turn left if take escalators) appears to be 3358 as of 2024. Please keep tidy... Escalators broken. They have a anime hobbies store as well as two Asian beauty stores.

It's worth it for the 2 extensions of cosmetics shops outside IF thqt's whqt you're looking for, but note they have no bathrooms.

Love Montreal China town. Feels very vibrant, clean. Although small compared to some other China towns like in Toronto or New York. It doesn't overwhelm you. Great variety of restaurants to choose from and parking is abundant around.

Centre commercial à plusieurs niveaux avec un restaurant chinois et des magasins vendant des aliments asiatiques, des produits d'anime et des articles pour la maison. I love Chinatown. I always take my Eropean visiting friends to pass a day there and they are amazed. They do not have similar. Many things to see: the sweets, the food, the narrow roads. The pagoda, the shows in the plaza. They buy clothes and gadgets a souvenirs and food that we do not know so we can try when we return home. We go to the shaman to read our hand and tell us our future. We go to the foot massage parlor and then we visit the Beautifull and lovely old Montreal!

Chinatown business owners ensure that the streets are as safe and clean as possible. Swatow Plaza houses many shops, there may be some flats on uppee floors, and obeys Covid 19 protocols very well.

Yelp
What a sad little mall :( The only cool stores (at least to me) were the bubble tea place (Haru Tea) and the Asian cosmetics store (C&C Korean Cosmetics). There are a few restaurants as well as a grocery store. I think there's a bookstore and a store that sells Chinese herbs. All the action is on the ground level. The second floor is like a ghost town. I feel sorry for the few stores that are open there because most stores are boarded up and vacant. I don't think there's anything on the higher levels. It looked too isolated and creepy, and the escalator wasn't working, which I took as a sign not to venture up there. Definitely not a shopping destination according to me. Hopefully they will revitalize it and I'll have to write an update!

Yelp
Swatow Plaza in Montreal Chinatown looks promising.... 6th floors including basement of shops and services. Right now only really the second floor and the main floor is occupied. Yang's Sushi opened up recently in the main floor.. and small independent clothing and accessories boutiques set up shops on the second floor. Close at 6 pm Sun-Wed and 8 pm Thu -Sat during Winter, the business hours are relatively short. Hopefully more stores will open next time when I come to visit!
