The 38 Best Restaurants in Singapore | Eater

"For more than 50 years, this pared-down restaurant in Jalan Besar has been keeping the night owls satiated with baskets of handcrafted Hong Kong-style dim sum, like char siu buns and xiao long bao. Relish it in the comfort of the air-conditioned shop-house or, if you prefer, in the alfresco back alley, but only after tackling the queue, which typically lasts about an hour. The line’s a bit shorter at lunch, so come closer to 11 a.m. if your patience is thin." - Evelyn Chen

Prawn paste carrot cake is quite nice and the french toast hit the spot. But the fried beancurd prawn is a tad too oily. They should have drenched the oil a bit more before they serve it. Photo shown is the oil at the bottom when it was just served. Cant imagine the amount of oil at the bottom if i was to leave it on the plate for a while more.

Customer service was very horrible. I wanted to pay at the counter and he insisted that I pay online. I told him I wanted to pay using shopback and he keep telling me to pay online. How do you expect me to pay online when online don't have shopback? He just went back and lean against the wall lazily. The cashier was also rude and talk back to us. When we ask the guy why his attitude was bad, he suddenly raised his voice. We said we would record him if he talk like this, but he didn't stop. When others ask him to go inside the cashier, he said" why must i go in, I didn't do anything wrong. Why must I go in, I don't want I don't want" Not only was the customer service bad, the food was terrible too. The egg noodles taste so plain and the chang fen taste extremely salty and sweet. I have the video of the guy and If y'all want to know more, pls contact me.

Dining space is limited so need to wait for a table at least 30 mins... Dim sum is average but I would recommend the following: 1. Braised chicken feet - flavourful 2. Fried sesame lava ball - nice flowing black sesame 3. Pan fried carrot cake The minced pork century egg porridge is bland. Fried banana with prawn - prawn is tough is dry...

Food wise all taste like ready make or instant unlike the main shop at jalan besar. Either too bland or no taste at all. Can be better if u standardize the food quality with jalan besar.

Despite eating this several months ago, until today i am still vividly remembering the taste of the fried rice. The dry shrimp chilli was so fragrant that it added a layer of taste to the fried rice. Their deep fried dim sum were hot and the steam one are nice as well. The price of the dim sum are mostly affordable and please go early if you did not wish to queue. Edit 24/07/2025: Still good as always.

Out of the dishes I ordered, the red oil dumplings were the highlight. I really enjoyed the sauce—it was tangy with just abit mild spiciness. The meat filling was well-seasoned and of good quality. However, the filling in the xiao long bao didn’t quite compare; it was a bit tough, and the bun skin was similarly dense. The yam paste was overly sweet and not very pleasant; I've had better versions elsewhere. I arrived an hour before closing, but the staff's demeanor made me feel somewhat rushed during my meal.
