Essential Denver Ice Cream Shops for Savoring the End of Summer | Eater Denver

"A family-run operation, Frozen Matter offers carefully created varieties with seasonal options like the lemon blueberry swirl. A new location just opened on Gaylord Street, though all the ice cream is produced at the Uptown original, which features a rare on-site pasteurizer (not to mention the Frozen Matter speakeasy located behind an unassuming freezer door)." - Eater Staff

Google
Such a great treat just blocks from my hotel DT Denver. The mango sorbet was a delicate balance of sweet and tart and very refreshing on a warm spring afternoon. Stop in and say hivto Nicki, who is absolutely pleasant and helpful.

Google
I've only visited for ice cream. It's delicious. It's obviously made in house as there are inventive delicious flavors. The strawberry chamomile is soo good. I love the addition of flowers for summer. It's so relaxing and fresh. My other favorite is whisky brickle and the chocolate and the fudge. Just all great!

Google
Loved the garage door entrance. Went for the speakeasy but it wasn’t open until later in the day. We grabbed the butterscotch ice cream, which tasted just like it sounds! & the milk & cookies ice cream which was really good!! Peach cobbler ice cream was my favorite! It literally had cake in it! So fresh & fancy. Staff was helpful with samples too.

Google
This iceream shop also has a speakeasy. The guy up front (I think his name is paul) was very chill and exciting. He was fast at service but also good at selections for icecream especially with my dietary restrictions for gluten and vegan. I will say the icecream was freaking phenomenal! Vegan options are usually blan but this was good. The speakeasy side was a little small but such a chill vibe. We went on a Wednesday. All the drinks on the menu were the same price, making it easier to focus on the experience of the drink. They also make standard drinks as well. You can also bring your icecream in from the other area. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in Denver, CO.

Google
Sweet Action/Frozen Matters was delicious. The staff was great and the Brownie with Ice cream was delicious. The atmosphere was also amazing. We had some outdoor seating that was fun and enjoyable. We also found it impressive that the staff are paid without tips. They pay the employees enough to sustain employment without the need for tips. Good for you! We will absolutely visit again.

Google
These guys are killing it! Amazing ice cream! The only reason we're at a 4 instead of a 5 is because the flavor selection is limited. However, the flavors they do have are on point! Leopold's Absinthe, Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookie Dough (that's one flavor), Grapefruit Ice, Gramma's Cookies, V for Vanilla, and some others. They have a window into the kitchen where all the ice cream is made. That is really cool! Definitely a fun place! They are pricey, though. But, they have Beer Floats!

Google
Been wanting to try this place for a while now. Finally got a chance to and the gothic looking kid who runs this joint at night was completely rude and out of line to my wife and I. He would not let my wife's service animal inside and his attitude is just absolutely uninviting. Pretty bummed actually. Sweet action could have had two loyal customer's if it weren't for this person.

Google
Second time having a sweet treat from sweet action. If I had to pick between this and retrograde, sweet action is the winner. Had the vegan cookies and cream, definitely a 10/10 and wasn’t too sugary for a vegan ice cream. Love the patio that is off to the side, great selection in general. Good service and samples available.

Yelp
Love Sweet Action! Always lived in this area and have been coming here since it was Frozen Matter. The speakeasy in the back, Retrograde, is a cute plus. Plenty of street parking around. I love all the dairy-free options they have and the alcohol infused flavors! The only thing that I'm mad at is that they have not brought back the vegan banana flavor! With this, their rotating flavors give a good chance to try unique flavors each time I stop by!

Yelp
While on vacation, if I want ice cream, then I want ice cream whenever I want it. I found Sweet Action, an ice cream shop a few blocks away from a restaurant that I ate at. While most, if not all, places ask for tips these days, this one doesn't, so keep that in mind before visiting. Upon walking inside, I immediately knew that I wanted an ice cream sundae, but also realized at the same time that they had a sign up that said that they were out of hot fudge. Despite this, they were happy enough to substitute it for chocolate sauce, which, according to one of the employees, had a similar taste to chocolate pudding. That was good enough for me, though. I ordered their brownie point sundae ($15 plus tax), which included chocolate ice cream, two brownies (one hot and one cold), chocolate sauce, and whipped cream on top. It was really good and I was able to finish the entire thing, but it was not really worth its' value, with it coming in a medium cup. I would come back again but choose something that matches its' value. There is no seating inside, but they have one picnic table that is accessible through a back door, if you're lucky enough to get it. Otherwise there's a bench on the sidewalk a few feet away. This is worth checking out if you live in the neighborhood or just visiting. Very good sundaes!

Yelp
Really fantastic and unique flavor options for ice cream and late night sweet treats. They are so gracious and let you sample your options so you can get exactly what you want. They even have waffle cone pieces for dog treats. No seating so this is an order and go place.

Yelp
Such a cute ice cream shop!, All three flavors we tried get a thumbs up.. The person that helped with the ice cream was really nice. Definitely would recommend and try again soon There's a small seating area, inside and outside the shop.

Yelp
Great ice cream and location! Went there on a weeknight with my son and enjoyed a cone and take away pint. With the extra effort instead of just buying Store ice cream

Yelp
Quirky, delicious flavors and excellent service! The key lime was amazing and tart. Tried a sample of the toffee pear and I'll get it next time.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Top 3 ice cream places in Denver for us. Y'all, I don't like banana flavored anything but looking over the counter there was something that just looked tasty with huge chunks of chocolate and swirls. I don't even know what the flavor was called but the banana just provided a minimum sweetness while the toffee added a salty accent and the chocolate was the perfect tie in. Also, very fun environment!

Yelp
My friends and I actually came to this spot, because inside the store behind doors is a speakeasy, but after we were done, we decided to get a sweet treat. I got the lemonade flavored sorbet and thought it really hit the spot! It was so refreshing and sorbet is always my favorite because it isn't creamy and doesn't get heavy. If you're looking for a treat after the speakeasy, I would recommend getting a scoop!
google avatar

Yelp
The drinks were good as well as the vibe. But for $23 with tip I wish it wasn't as salty.....
google avatar

Yelp
I am surprise with their ice cream flavors and they are open pretty late! Love it and will definitely go back!

Yelp
Awesome customer service and creative delicious ice cream! GO! NOW! Beat this Summer heat and pack on the pounds.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times. The ice cream is good! They have a great selection of flavors and everything there tastes really good. The ambiance is nice and the service Is always friendly. Definitely check them out!

Yelp
Delicious and wonderful service. I was here with my family who were looking for a quick cup of caffeine. As they are usually sweet coffee drinkers, the barista was very patient and helpful to us in making a drink selection. If you like a good cup of coffee for its flavor this place is great. (I'm a plain iced latte gal.) the cafe had sleek and clean vibe. Their pastries were beautifully made as well. I ordered their croissant with ham, cheese and green chili. The layers were perfectly buttery and flaky while the filling was savory and well-balanced. I am tempted to return based on their food selection alone. I also bought home some of their loose leaf tea for home. Their Morning Mist green tea (light and smoky), their Honey Orchid Oolong (light and toasty), and their Dehong Snow Phoenix (a mellow Silver Needle white tea). I was very pleased with these and they steeped a wonderful cup of tea. Top marks.

Yelp
Still a great place to grab ice cream! Or visit Frozen Matter (speakeasy) in the back. But only when there's parking available. So many times I've driven around in circles looking for a spot, spending more time doing that than actually enjoying the businesses. But I like their variety of flavors. Decent service, too. I do like this neighborhood and especially the little clear greenhouse tents on the patio leftover from COVID lockdown days.
google avatar

Yelp
This small regional ice cream chain serves up classic tasty ice cream flavors...and also weird, funky and eccentric hipster inspired flavors...perfect! The friendly staff thankfully let me try a few flavors before settling down. The Whiskey flavored ice cream wasn't for me, and I do love Whiskey! Surprisingly the Brie cheese ice cream hit me in the heart, as I am a cheese whore, especially brie! I pared with with a scoop of coffee ice cream...delicious! Seems a bit pricey a $8.50ish for 2 full scoops in a big waffle cone, but that's the normal price I've seen for high end hipster ice cream.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was good and the ice cream was great. Although a little bit on the expensive side. I particularly like the salted caramel.
google avatar

Danielle L.

Yelp
Always a lovely treat in the summer for ice cream. I adore their unique flavors. Great local spot for the summer or warmer evenings with family.

Kevin C.

Yelp
Live in the neighborhood and decided to give this place a try. My son and I were underwhelmed by the flavors compared to numerous other options reasonably close by. The breaking point was $7.00 for one scoop. Zero value at that price. I know other places have similar pricing, but these scoops are small by anyone's standards. If this is what the cost needs to be to run an ice cream shop, it's a said state of affairs in Denver.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere and 1st class flavors await you! Not to mention a friendly staff and great location! All in our group agreed, we will be back!! Picture says it all.

Yelp
Walked over to Sweet Action, we were barely greeted and after not getting the cone we wanted without an apology, and paying 7.00 for a single serving cone each. We were very disappointed in the experience. We will save our 14.00 for dessert next time. Sorry Sweet Action.

Yelp
Just went today to grab some hot chocolate which I LOVE but was met with sooo much disappointment. The hot chocolate was lukewarm at best and had a lot of floaties... perhaps it needed a good stir to mix up but I wasn't expecting little slimy bits in it. She also did not fill my cup all the way up! It's a small cup for $4 so it was disappointing to see my cup was not full. We also got a milk shake and AGAIN it was not filled to the top (see photo). These milkshakes are overpriced as is but to not have it fill is thievery. I also noticed the small milkshake is the same price the large one used to be but it is WAAAY smaller. $8 for a small milkshake when that used to be the price for the large or at the time "onesize." I've cut back on going there due to price but I've always been able to get good quality but if this is the quality they are giving moving forward I will not be going at all. I used to LOVE this place and still have hope for the hot chocolate.

Yelp
I've been here twice in the past two weeks and I have no complaints so far. The consistency of their ice cream is great, taste is great. I do wish they had more sorbet or vegan options but great overall. This trips flavors: Vegan vanilla Vanilla Milk and cookies Strawberry Mint and Chip Favorite? Milk and Cookies 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Melanie T.

Yelp
The consistency of the ice cream at Frozen Matter is no joke. It's very smooth and just feels like great caramel that melts on your tongue. But it doesn't melt into liquid water just because it's super hot out so you can still enjoy an ice cream without rushing to slurp it up. Ube was delicious and creamy along with cookies ice cream flavor. There's a speakeasy located in the back so the line may be confusing at times.

Yelp

Yelp
We got here around 9pm and we were so excited that it was open. I ordered a single scoop of milk and cookies and my sister got a brownie with salted butterscotch. The brownie was perfect, and the serving was pretty spot on. It wasn't too much and it wasn't too little. This was a great way to end our night.
google avatar

Jacob B.

Yelp
I have tried multiple flavors and haven't been too impressed with their bespoke options. I will say their mainstays, like their cookies and cream and chocolate varieties are good. I very much appreciate the workers getting paid reasonable wages so tips aren't requested.
google avatar

Austin K.

Yelp
I tried some samples (Salted butterscotch and cardamom lemon bar were both good) but ultimately settled on strawberry chamomile and Whiskey brickle. As you can tell, they have some unusual flavors but none of them seemed gimmicky and I like all of them. I couldn't really taste the chamomile too much but it was a good creamy strawberry and the whiskey was certainly present but again, more muted than you might think. I might get the cardamom lemon bar next time I'm in for a zingier flavor. $6 in total for a single scoop with a split (extra charge) but they already include the tip, so it was $6 flat which I appreciate.

Yelp
tried to come in at 4:10pm since they open at 4 and they were closed so I went home and called them around 4:15 the girl I spoke to was very rude and said they were open and it was clearly posted on the website then hung up on me. I then went back at 4:30 and they were still closed

Yelp
Where has this dairy free ice cream place been all my life! Was in the are for an event and a few people I was with mentioned Frozen Matter as one of the best ice cream establishments for vegan/dairy free ice cream. Naturally, I had to check it out. We walked over and the women was kind enough to let us all try a few different flavors before making out selections. I got the Orange Honeycomb. A unique flavor that also had and unexpected chocolate shaving through. Typically dairy free ice creams just aren't as creamy has traditional ice cream but, Frozen Matter has figured out the secret.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the Green Apple one! I loved it so much I didn't care about trying the other ones. I'm glad we stumbled upon this place.
google avatar

Yelp
DAAAAAAAAAAAAANK!!!! This is such a great icecream shop. I had the vegan chocolate with toasted marshmallow fluff. Yep, you read that right- TOASTED marshmallow. The moment I had the first scoop I thought I died and went to heaven. Absolutely scrumptious. 10/10 would recommend specifically the toasted marshmallow. It's a game changer when it comes to icecream *licks lips*

Yelp
Cool place for ice cream. Frozen Matter has some crazy flavors. It has both ice cream and sorbet. Bad thing is that it's expensive. The ice cream though is high quality. Has a good amount of flavors. I came here with a friend. There was plenty of room for outdoor seating. It has so many good sounding flavors. There's always a few non dairy sorbets. It has some interesting ingredients. Sometimes these are not typically what you find in ice cream places and they can be unusual. I had the coconut lime sorbet, and my female friend had the cantaloupe cardamom sorbet. It's about $5 for a cup, which is kind of a lot for this. The sorbets has so much taste and they should be priced higher than typical ice cream though. It's high quality stuff compared to typical ice cream. This is still of course too expensive to get often. It should be checked out if you like odd flavored ice cream. Lots of crazy ones to choose from There's also a speakeasy that's hidden next to this so we have to go back there.

Yelp
Meh - just about okay!! Visited this place after reading a few reviews on Yelp - this place belongs to sweet action which is actually one of my fav ice cream places in Denver - so my expectations were high! I tried the green tea caramel ice cream - cloyingly sweet, so was the pecan ice cream! Also tried the black sesame ice cream - not a fan! I am more interested in trying the speakeasy that's in this ice cream place! The ice cream here is okay and nothing great!
google avatar

Tatiana A.

Yelp
Love stepping out of my comfort zone, especially when it comes to ice cream flavorsCheck out this cool location if you are in the Colorado area! What's cool about frozen matter is that not only do they sell ice cream but they also have a speakeasy in the back. Must be 21 and up to enter. Visit yelp for more info. I got 1 scoop of Cantaloupe cardamom sorbet and 1 scoop of peach Thyme |Tips|: Make sure you view yelp reviews in regards to the speakeasy. I was not able to get in due to time but they do have a long wait list
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
The mint chip was so so good. This is a walk up ice cream place in a cool part of town. They have a small section for seating, cute little glass huts. It's expensive, but the portions are huge and the flavors are really fun. I had the mint chip and it was amazing. Free water station too.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
The service was great! The staff was very knowledgeable and offered us samples. We tried multiple flavors but the vegan coffee, butterscotch and milk and cookies were absolutely delicious! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Dej C.

Yelp
I guess this place has two names but on Apple Maps it pops up as sweet action but the sign outside says frozen matter and the menu says both a little confusing BUTTT it was all worth it because the ice cream was extremely delicious. We had got the brownie points with whiskey ice cream and vanilla. I absolutely loved the ice cream didn't really care for the brownie that much. Very rich but much for me. Check it out nice safe area. Service was good.
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
Try the fall flavors before they are replaced, caramel apple, witches brew, and green chili. I hope they keep dirty chai forever, because I will never get bored of it. The staff is passionate and doesn't take tips.
google avatar

C T.

Yelp
Got lost because the name on Google maids is different but was totally worth the confusion. E we got the Stranahan whiskey ice cream which is made in Denver with the brownie. The brownie was rich in chocolate and was soft. Service was good and the location is in a great neighborhood we walked stoned while eating ice cream.

Trevor L.

Yelp
Zack was the best customer service I've received so far in Denver. Visiting from vegas. The Ice cream is fire too
google avatar

Dexter N.

Yelp
Pretty decent ice cream but the cost was just a little too much for me. Almost $7 for a single scoop is a little over the top. But the French chocolate ice cream was very tasty! The service was very friendly.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Came here on a whim & found a delicious gem! I sadly can't have dairy but they have a few amazing vegan flavors! Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff was friendly. It seems like there are rotating flavors so I am looking forward to trying new flavors!
google avatar

Kailee N.

Yelp
I love taking people this spot! Unique flavors, vegan options, a speakeasy in the back, and great service, all in one place! I was so excited to see soursop ice cream on my most recent visit and the guy up front was so much fun to chat with! Give this place a try if you're ever in the area and wanting a cold treat!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
The flavors here are off the charts, the only downside is how expensive they are. They have fun and unique flavors and they do them each so well. Flavors that I didn't expect to like, I enjoyed. In one pint you're able to mix 3 flavors, which is great for someone indecisive as myself. In one scoop you're also able to split flavors - even better. I had a single split scoop of their caramel with dark chocolate dipped pretzel and that was INCREDIBLE - didn't think it would be my favorite but it was. The caramel icecream wasn't TOO sweet and the pretzels gave a good taste and texture. The mint chocolate chip had a good ratio of chocolate flakes and icecream goodness. As for the pint flavors i had: Peppermint: you know how things can be way too minty you feel like you're eating toothpaste? NOT THIS. they balanced creamy and minty with this flavor. Bread Pudding: this one was my least favorite flavor actually. it had chunks of bread with caramel swirled in. it was good but not to die for Spiced Rum: this tastes like the holidays in a cup. If you like those warm, gingerbread, nutmeg flavors you're going to fall in love with the spiced rum. Overall high quality icecream, but can't break the bank going here every week :(
google avatar

Brandi B.

Yelp
The ice cream here is so good! Friendly staff and amazing unique flavors! I got the salted butterscotch, so buttery and yumm!

Hillary P.

Yelp
Looks like a walk up stand in the plaza not a sit down place, and advertises pup cups but when I was ordering the cashier told me no dogs allowed... okay, but how am i supposed to order and why do we sell pup cups if my pup isn't allowed. Overall very awkward experience no customers service skills. Didn't even offer to take my order outside, she just stood there and stared at me until I walked away.... Didn't even get to try the ice cream. Please have a sign that theirs no dogs allowed....
google avatar

Joanie W.

Yelp
Great icecream flavors. Love that there's a speakeasy in the back (haven't tried that one yet tho). It gets a big congested aft night if the speakeasy line is long and you're here for icecream. I usually get an ice team Sunday and they use homemade fresh whipped cream. Minus one star because of price (it's expensive compared to other local icecream shops) and lack of seating.
google avatar

Sunina G.

Yelp
The ice cream is DELICIOUS! I got the dirty chai and the maple pecan and they were both sooo good! My sister got the milk and cookies and she loved that too. Highly recommend checking out for the ice cream. It is on the pricier side, but worth it for a little treat! We do not recommend getting the brownie (at least the ones you buys separately). It was hard and crunchy (even after warming) and honestly not edible.
