Don't like leaving bad reviews but this one feels deserved as I have had consistent issues with Sweet Basil Express unfortunately and hope this feedback is acted upon. bad pad se ew? Had it from here before and it was fine but ordered recently and it was AWFUL. pad se ew is my favorite food feel like its pretty hard to get wrong. far too much pepper and the flavor was just very very off. paid over 20$ for it to be delivered and didn't even eat it. Delivery packaging should be changed as when my food arrives its a soggy gross brick in the container. There was no wait the food was picked up immediately and dropped off within 20 minutes. If you cant handle offering delivery then don't offer it. When I pick up from here as a delivery driver during peak hours there's always a wait and like one or maybe two people working clearly understaffed.

Go to spot since college! Anytime I come back to town, have to stop here for the pad see ew, my faveeee. Everyone loves the pad Thai too, the best in town.

Google
A friend recommended this place to me. The staff was friendly and the portion is big, however, the food is average. Everything kinda tasted the same. I don't have high expectation coming here, since we were not in San Francisco. However, if you're college student, it will fill your stomach!!

Google
Tried the pad see ew and was not disappointed. They have the widest noodles I’ve ever gotten! I also got the Oh My God, their version of a crab Rangoon, and probably my favorite version I’ve ever tried too! The sweet plum sauce to dip them in was the cherry on top. Definitely going back to try more of the menu!

Google
Tight quarters. Yet walk in we did. My friend Steve and I. As with any good Thai place, lots of Thai-type photos. We ordered Green Curry with Chicken, Gang Keiwong Ghai. Good spice. Good taste. Pad Kee Mao. Very good. Subtle with a deft touch. Very good. Sounds and scents of a restaurant hard at it cooking. Good on them.

Google
New cook is not good. Puts whatever in the dish rather than what is specified in the menu. Learn to cook and follow the menu. You are cooking for other people not yourself!

Google
I've eaten here a couple of times during my visit to Eugene. The House Special Curry (with tofu) was very tasty and my friends enjoyed their meals as well.

Google
Order the food via DoorDash. Found out the restaurant was going to close. Try to call the restaurant, if they ever get the order because the money already taken out of my credit card. Nobody picked up. Gotta drive there to confirm. The lady who work there was very rude. Not ever going to go here ever again. Sorry. I love supporting Thai community but this one is a hard pass

Yelp
I ordered my food to go. Customer service was great. The food was amazing. I ordered the vegan spring rolls, fried tofu, khua Gai, and Garlic lover. Everything was delicious. I would reorder it again. So far the best vegan spring rolls I have had. But I also have not had many yet. Loved this place. I will have to dine-in to see what the experience is like.

Yelp
When we first walked in I thought: Hole in the wall? Oh yeah, this'll be a good spot. I was sorely mistaken. While not horrible, we definitely won't be back. The young guy at the counter was polite and kind but the food was just kinda meh. The fresh rolls were premade, and the last ones in the cooler... sadly they weren't that fresh. We took a break from Ta Ra Rin to try something else, but after this I know where we'll be going for Thai next time.

Yelp
Great portions and fresh. Couldn't really tell a difference in flavors with many dishes. Just a warning, Medium is spicy. Mild is not. It's more of a peppery spiciness. I was fine with it. The fried tofu was underwhelming for the price.
google avatar

Melinda G.

Yelp
Ordered the garlic lover with chicken. If you love garlic, you will love this dish. Served with white rice and vegetables (mushrooms, onions and yep...garlic) with the most delicious garlic sauce I have ever had. Very fresh and full of flavor. I will definitely be back to try more menu items.

Yelp
Just not worth it in my opinion. I'd only eat here if it was the only Thai place open. Coming from the Bay Area, California where there's lots of competition and the thai food is generally very good. First things I noticed were the pad see ew noodles were mostly just noodles, usually I get more veggies and toppings when I order this. Some noodles were rather stiff and some tasted very salty. The tofu tasted like it was cooked separately and added as they were assembling the dish. I know it's common for the tofu to be prepped beforehand but somehow the flavors just didn't meld well. Yellow curry: unpeeled potato's, I know eating potato skin is fine but usually at Thai restaurants enjoy the skin removed. This also sounds silly the vegetables were unevenly cut. I never thought I'd complain about veggies not being cut nicely but I think Asian restaurants are good at this and it makes a difference in enjoying the food. Also this is one of very few times I've had rice that wasn't cooked nicely at an Asian restaurant. It was a bit dry and stiff... Overall I think it tastes like wannabe thai food that misses the mark. I joked that it doesn't have the Asian mom touch of being made with love and care. It just taste like food assembles into what can look and mimic Thai food.

Yelp
very nice people, efficient but WOW SO OILY . the flavors were not bad and it IS a campus tiny drop in but would likely not go again. BTW I am a mom not a college kid ;-).

Yelp
Medium heat was just right for me personally on the yellow curry. Enough spice to sweat but not too much burn. Pad See Ew was straight bussin. Best I've had and we have 4-5 other great local Thai restaurants

Yelp
Hole in the wall Thai restaurant in the middle of Eugene. You go up to the counter and order, and food comes out in about 10 min. There's tons of indoor and outdoor seating. Everything is made fresh in the kitchen, so food comes out piping hot! I ordered the pad kee mao with tofu ($12) which is a Thai basil based wide rice noodle dish with peppers and onions and egg. The pad kee mao was just okay - the tofu was a little burnt and veggies a little undercooked. The stir fry sauce was soy sauce based and didn't have a lot of Thai Basil unfortunately. My dish also wasn't spicy at all so I had to add hot sauce. The portion was huge and I was stuffed at the end. I feel like Eugene probably has other Thai food I'd try next time.

Yelp
One of my go to restaurants for a delicious quick and affordable lunch. Service is good, great menu.

Yelp
Could have been MUCH better on a couple of occasions. I would love the opportunity to speak directly with the owner of Sweet Basil Express at 1219 Alder St, Eugene, OR 97401. My wife and I have considered this to be one of our favorite places to eat however, there are some behaviors by the workers at the location that need strong attention or they will risk losing patrons like us. The ones who spend several hundreds of dollars at your establishment annually. Max S, the Business Owner who wrote "I'm a believer in superb customer service and a good product for a fair price. I have an excellent reputation where I live as both a hotel owner and restaurateur. I like to believe I serve the best Thai food locally at Sweet Basil Express!" Make yourself available to have a discussion please.

Yelp
The food is fresh, steaming hot and delicious. I appreciate the range of heat offered in each dish and that it seems accurate every time I come here. This place is best as a to go order because the atmosphere is barrenness highlighted with stark florescent lighting. It's not about ambience here--its about getting your delicious food to go so you can enjoy it elsewhere.

Yelp
Survived college because of this place. Get it wild spicy. Good and fast service. A campus staple

Yelp
For campus food this is tasty Thai food. It is not my favorite spot to go, but it is one of the better places to get Thai. Anytime I have gone it has been really busy, making you think you might not find a place to sit which has never been the case. I have always been able to find seating, and you bus your own tables after. The food has been hit or miss for me. This last time it was really good. We had the kee moa, and the cashew gai. We forgot to order the Thai iced tea this last time. I know I have had it here, I just can't remember what it was like. Must not have been bad, or I would have remembered. Ha! The fresh salad rolls didn't seem so fresh, but were still decent. The peanut sauce is really good...almost addicting good! I think I want to try the phad Thai next time just to try the peanut sauce.

Yelp
This place was the bomb. The worker was kind and helpful, the food was well priced, and the Pad Thai was just what I have been looking for. I just moved to Eugene from TN, and have been trying to find Thai food as good as at home! This was pretty darn closer, much closer than anywhere else we've tried! I also tried their pot stickers and they were really good too. They have an inside sitting area and then some spots outside (not big spots to sit for more than 3, maybe 4 people). My friends and I really enjoyed it and 100% will be going back!

Yelp
Overall the foods pretty good but delivery containers need some work. The curry wasn't in a container so upon delivery it was everywhere.
google avatar

Pookie M.

Yelp
Ordered from this restaurant twice via doordash. Messed up my order every time. First time I ordered pad se ew. I got pad Thai instead. Second time I tried again pad se ew. Second time I don't even know what the hell I was sent bc it was not pad se ew. It has bell peppers bean sprouts, onions, and jalapenos. Definitely not pad se ew with the basic broccoli, noodles, and egg. Don't know how you mess it that bad or twice. Not ordering again...

Yelp
Small place near by campus in Eugene. They have lots of Thai food options, from soup, noodle dishes, rice dishes and more. Pretty friendly and accommodating about specific diets, like veganism for me. Food came out super fast, and is really inexpensive. I ordered a side of peanut sauce ($1) and was given a super tiny amount in a togo container. I asked for a second and was given it free of charge. If you want peanut sauce I would recommend ordering or asking for 2 servings. Pad thai was super delicious, even served in a takeout container. Big serving and came with a lime slice! Wish they had a little more seating, either indoor or outdoor. Good spot for some inexpensive but good quality thai.

Yelp
When I ordered the Tom Yum Noodle soup with chicken and wontons, I was served the wrong soup. Since it was delivery, there was no way of returning it. Can't eat that spicy soup so I just wasted a bunch of money (delivery/service fee, tip etc) and still ended up making my own food. Sigh

Yelp
Ordered through Door Dash and chose the "I Love Veggies" with Tofu and specified Vegan. It got here fast but this is one of the most disgusting things I've tasted in my life. It tastes like old meat and rancid oil. I took one bite and spit it out. I thought about asking my neighbors if they wanted it but it was just terrible so it all had to be thrown away. What a waste of money.

Yelp
We ordered Thai just last night from Sweet Basil. Now, I always hesitate to review off of a delivery only, so I do plan to try the restaurant again in person and will update this if my views change. Once we placed our order, it seemed to be prepared and delivered pretty quickly, I'd say about 35 minutes from start to eating on our couch, LOL The food was actually still quite hot when it arrived--not always the case with delivery--and that was much appreciated. We got Tom Kha Gai (amazing and full of flavor!!), Pad Kee Mow (good though on the oily side) and Pad Thai (mostly, meh). Overall, this is a solid yet pretty standard Thai place. It's a good choice on a Monday though as most other Thai restaurants in Eugene are closed that day as we found out!
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Came here three days in a row and would come again tomorrow if i could! Sweet basil has really delicious pad thai as well as a yummy yellow curry. The orders come out really quick and are very affordable. Check it out!
google avatar

Miki M.

Yelp
Nope. It's not good, and it's pricey. I spent $15 for massaman curry. They put the curry and rice in one container. Usually curry comes in a soup container. Very little meat. Under cooked, unpeeled potatoes. I don't think I'd go back here

Uriah D.

Yelp
cute dude with a cute smile with good service and good food!! the place is adorable too!

Frank M.

Yelp
Used to have the best pad kee mao in town. Now it costs twice as much and has no flavor to it. The last 2 times i ordered it didn't even have Thai basil in it.

Yelp
It was my first time coming to this restaurant and a very rude person was working the front. I stood there for several minutes and he never acknowledged me. He then walked away. I asked the cooks if anyone would take my order. Then the guy came back, told me to wait and proceeded to do tasks that could be taken care of later (putting lids on drinks for mobile orders, tidying up his station). No idea why he deliberately ignored me for several minutes. Took his photo to warn people about this guy. I wished him a nice day then he started trash talking to me to his colleagues as I left. Idk why any of this happened. Lol was literally just waiting to order lunch. There was also music blasting in the restaurant so loud that no one could hear me. I had to shout to get the cooks to hear me when this man walked away. It was like I was in a nightclub with a sassy person working the front that is rude to patrons for no known reason. what an odd experience. I went to Izakaya Jinsei next door and they took my order right away, allowed me a space to sit and wait for it and offered me water. I would recommend hitting up other restaurants in the area just to avoid this one man. It's sad, other reviews seem to be fine. I guess I had the unfortunate experience of meeting their only disrespectful employee.

Owen P.

Yelp
Food is O.K. but portions are very small and customer service is poor. Not something I would recommend.

Hans S.

Yelp
Best and quickest food near campus wonderful people. I miss them all so much.

Yelp
I don't know why Sweet Basil even bothers to post their "hours." They claim to be open until 9:00, but this evening, we arrived at 8:15 and their chairs were up, doors closed, and open sign off. It's a crapshoot each and every time we try to go here after 8pm...seems like their staff is always trying to cut out early and often won't do dine-in orders within an hour of close. I get that you want to go home, but this isn't exactly the type of dining experience where it's going to take an hour to order, receive, and eat food. It's one thing if I try to come in at 5 minutes before close...but an hour? It's really too bad, as their food is usually pretty solid (and very affordable).

Yelp
Great place for vegetarians, my son recently turned to the Dark-side (he is now a vegan) And it's hard to find places he actually will eat out. He has become a Very picky eater. At 19 years old I was amazed at the high compliment he gave this restaurant he said " I would eat here again" i'll take it!
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
The salad rolls were excellent, the best I've had anywhere. The pad Thai was inedible. It was greasy and tasted like rancid oil. The vegetables in the curry were way over-cooked. We won't be back.
google avatar

Jess N.

Yelp
Always a fan of sweet basil! The pad Thai is always a good choice and is gluten free! You have your choice of tofu and different meet options as well as different spice levels! I like the extremely spicy option for both the pad Thai and the curry! If I don't get the pad Thai I get the green curry (though I was disappointed that last time I hardly got eggplant). Anything you get there pairs well with Thai tea and their veggie wrap in rice paper, which comes with heir peanut sauce which is delicious and I can just eat a ton of!
google avatar

Nikalia C.

Yelp
My food was ordered 40 minutes in advance and despite the place being empty when I got there I still waited 10 minutes. My food was completely burned (not over cooked) like charred. There was two pieces of pineapple in my PINEAPPLE dish. There was a very sharp piece of metal in my food that cut my gums. For my first time at this place I will skip it next time.
google avatar

Hana N.

Yelp
I ordered the House Curry! I thought there really wasn't a lot of sauce to topping ratio (they put too much chicken). They sauce was decent but was more on the sweeter side. Overall it was okay!
google avatar

Jean Y.

Yelp
This place has good "pad see ew" and their "oh my god" is tasty too. Unfortunately, I wanted to try something new after starving the whole day from taking a long exam. I ordered the new, special ravioli and it was far from special. It had white noodles that were just boiled, taken out of the pot and placed on the plate looking bland. There was definitely no flavor at all and the ravioli tasted like the same package you can buy from Costco. The cook didn't even drain out the water. The only decent part of this meal is the pork and the little PUDDLE of coconut flavored sauce on the way bottom. Anyways, this was the worst meal I've ever had.
google avatar

Taco B.

Yelp
My friend and I both ordered pad Thai. This was the worst pad Thai I have ever had. There was barely any sauce, fried egg, tofu, peanuts or bean sprouts. It was basically just noodles. For $12.75 that's not okay! I won't be ordering from here anymore.
google avatar

Jer E.

Yelp
Fuck these people. My first time trying to go to them. I tried to order six dishes from them and waited for five minutes for them to take my order with the phone set on the counter hearing all the loud noises. When the guy came back on the line, I asked about the first dish and what he thought was the protein was best with it. He simply said to call back when I knew what I wanted. I heard their customer service was bad but really??? I hope they go out of business!!!
google avatar

Danielle P.

Yelp
I will start by saying I love their food, however I'm sick of paying for "extra protein" and getting double the amount of noodles.
google avatar

Emmanuelle M.

Yelp
"We're not allowed to use plastic bags anymore so here you go" : / Is that really how you feel about pollution? Those plastic bags are killing environments that you don't even live in, the least you could do is be mindful of your impact. As for the food, If I had a middle name, it would be spice or "Extremely Wild" to use your spice chart LOL. I asked for wild but aye, extra heat doesn't scare me. :) I grew up eating and cooking African Food. Heat however is NOT a synonym for flavour. You don't just marinate lamb in habanero alone and call it good. The "spice" was too overpowering, masking any and all other flavours. The noodles were cooked perfectly though and the tofu was decent, but I felt like I was eating spicy ramen noodles not Pad Thai. Where's the depth? I didn't even taste the peanut. :( On top of that the pot stickers were burnt and uneven. Tsk Tsk. *Walks away sad and disappointed*
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
I'm still in a quest to find a good Thai place here in Eugene. I ordered Pad Thai. It was ok. The place is in the middle of the Ducks Campus. Parking is hard to find if you go at the wrong time of day. A friend of mind said the soups are worth trying do I may go one more time to try it out.
google avatar

Angi G.

Yelp
Ugh. Still trying to figure out how our order was so messed up. Often get decent food and service but now haave come home with take out that is not what was ordered.
google avatar

Robert N.

Yelp
The food was perfect just what I wanted. The delivery person was late, but understandably so since I live in a manufactured home park and my space is hard to fine. Will definitely order again. Great food great price.

Alesha A.

Yelp
amazing food. highly recommend everything. service was so good, sweet workers. the ambiance is cute!
google avatar

Patricia DeAnn W.

Yelp
I love this little place, there is another one that is further away from the university and is more of a restaurant than a quick stop in. You can sit at either, however if you want full service go to the one not near the campus. The food is great I love the cream cheese roll that is fried. The soups are good and the beef thing with lettuce rocks! Friendly and casual good beer selection too.
google avatar

Nicky T.

Yelp
I'd been here once before with my companion and her mom, it was a fun, enjoyable and spicy expedience! Today I went, alone, and ordered the Tom Kah Gai soup (wild spiciness 4/5 chilis) and a Pepsi (because I can't resist corporate branding). The wait wasn't long at all. The soup was served in a ceramic cup and was a perfect lunch portion. Despite ordering it wild, I put two more scoops of chili oil and two heaping scoops of chili sauce to kick it up - yet it still wasn't making me sweat. A few pieces of chicken didnt cut it - the chef should add more mushrooms, chicken, etc into the soup. The color was a beautiful red/orange end of spectrum instead of being more white and coconut milky. I wish there was more of a citrus flavor too! Despite these shortcoming, I enjoyed the heck out of my soup and I'll definitely return - way better than noodle head and terriyaki boy around campus.
google avatar

Jules B.

Yelp
This place solidly met expectations. For less than $8 per plate, we each received a large helping of food (I had the chicken pad se ew, the bloke had a curry) that had pretty good flavor. There was a good selection of the usual condiments with which to customize your dish to taste. Service was polite, friendly, and food came out relatively quickly, though we did wait a few minutes to order as the cashier was perusing his phone and didn't notice us standing there. The food and experience were worth what we paid for it, and I would go back again. While I would not call the flavors competitive with Chaiyo, Ta Ra Rin, or Ubon, it is definitely superior to Tasty Thai or Manola's when competing for "cheap campus Thai".
google avatar

Hayley S.

Yelp
I love their chicken pad Thai. It's fantastic! My only critique is that some of the staff can be a bit rude.
google avatar

Goddess G.

Yelp
I always get the veggies with rice and shrimp. The flavor is fantastic, the portions are generous. I always order online so I cannot speak to their customer service.
google avatar

Mollie P.

Yelp
Food is generally ok though I do love their tom kha gai and get it often for lunch. Haven't been in in a month or so and they've dramatically decreased the side of the serving and didn't even fill it up all the way. A bit sad.
google avatar

Gordon H.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Eugene. The prices are reasonable, the service is fast, and the portions are large. The Pad Kee Mao has a nice balance of flavors and is my favorite. But medium spicy = hot at most other restaurants! There isn't much ambience but the good food makes up for this.
