The 16 Best Restaurants in Hilo, Hawai‘i - Eater

"Owned by a family of farmers, Sweet Cane Cafe has been serving vegetarian and vegan dishes since 2011. Sisters Cherub Silverstein and Seraphina Prell incorporate sugar cane juice wherever possible on the menu, including in fresh-pressed juice and juice-based smoothies. To go with the drinks, look for cassava pizza, daily soup, dairy-free spreads, and hearty salads made from organic vegetables grown on the family farm, where Silverstein and Prell have help from their parents, Jackie Prell and John Caverly. During the school year, Sweet Cane is a popular spot for University of Hawai‘i students, who make good use of the free Wi-Fi, comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, and homey atmosphere. Try the Durian Cacao Smoothie, a local favorite." - Maya-Lin Green

As vegetarians we find it hard to find restaurants with good vegetarian options. Sweet Cane was our paradise! With a full vegetarian menu, the portion sizes were great and the food tasted amazing. The sandwiches and burgers could have done with a little more seasoning (it didn’t have salt) but overall loved the freshness of the food. We tried the pumpkin soup which was amazing, ordered a taro burger and avocado sandwich to eat there and also ended up ordering the Poke Bowl and Pesto sandwich for takeout. Loved the place and went back to order our lunch the following day as well! Must try!

Loved the poke bowl. Burger was all right, although I would have liked it with fewer micro greens.

Google
Super clean, fresh place to eat. Food was quick to come out, and tasted so good. I also had a cold brew, and it was delightful. Prices are understandably a little higher than some may find comfortable, but is justified by the quality of the ingredients served. I recommend it!

Google
Yeah this place was awesome. Hidden gem for vegans in Hilo. Came here with my daughter after doing the nearby caves. Had some delicious food, I had a bowl and my daughter had a sandwich, also an amazing protein shake. The staff was super friendly. Very clean, lots of parking, lots of seating, great value: would definitely return.

Google
We came here looking forward to the food but were disappointed with the service. The order taking was unfriendly and indifferent. When the food was brought to our table the burger bun fell off the plate on the table, we were asked what we wanted to do instead of offering to take it back. And also we were told the table was cleaned! We did agree to have it and not waste food but this was weird. The food was decent but the experience was not.

We just loved loved the food and everything there. We eat #jain food which is without onion garlic or any root vegetables. Cafe was sweet to customize the food for us. We loved it so much that we drove 2 hr to eat here. We had their kale salad, pancakes, açaí bowl, chickpeas burger. They had so many vegan desert options. All of it was super delicious

Oli

Google
We ordered the pancakes, avocado sandwich, and pizza. I thought my pancakes were pretty good considering they were oat and buckwheat based. The other meals weren’t as good but we’re also not vegetarian or vegan, so we might have not been able to fully appreciate these vegetarian meals.

Delicious, healthy Whole Foods The banana/peanutbutter smoothie was super good and tasted like a milkshake

Yelp
Normally between my class schedule I will swing into this place for a smoothie or something satisfying to eat. I was on a Daniel Fast so I needed all vegan diet and this place was wonderful for just a quick stop and/or sitting in their dining area. Highly recommended, especially if you are looking for more of a vegan dietary guide. It's absolutely delicious, whatever, you decide to order.

Yelp
My favorite cafe in the island! Fresh, healthy, farm to table food that I can actually eat! Allergy friendly. I was able to go dairy free easily. The cassava crust pizza made vegan was exceptional, so flavorful! Even my meat loving guys thought it was really good. Everything our family of five had was delicious. I love the expanded space! The last time I visited the island they were closed when I was in Hilo, and the time before they were in a little closet sized shop. I had loved the cane juice then, and the zoodles with mac nut pesto were so good that I remember them to this day (no longer available, dang it, but the other menu items make up for that). There are a lot of grab and go items for sale too, like freeze dried island fruits, coconut yogurt (so good), frozen and fresh juices, vegan ice cream, healthy chocolates, and so much more. This cafe makes me want to spend more time over in Hilo on the next trip to the island. Highly recommend! Parking was easy and free too, in their lot.

Yelp
Vegetarians rejoice! This is the place for you in Hilo to enjoy healthy & tasty choices on the entire menu full of locally sourced goodness. It's a little pricey for the portion size, but the food is creative, flavorful & well prepared so worth it. The atmosphere is Friendly & casual - pretty much self-service for dine in. You order & pay at the counter and then the food it brought to your table. It's a spotless, comfy environment - i had lunch here for the first time in a long while, just ordered one of the salads. Fresh, simple and delicious. I've also taken advantage of Sweet Cane's catering service in the past. It was for a professional event with about 40 people and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Yelp
Such a great cafe with healthy, fresh food and eco-friendly dishes and containers. The coconut matcha shake was delicious. The acai bowls are prepared beautifully. Service was excellent.

Yelp
My parents and I came here the other day for lunch. The staff was friendly and they have a lot of local stuff for sale in the front. They try to be farm to table, everything is really healthy and clean. The taro burger was my favorite and the most flavorful, the spicy sandwich was interesting and tasted similar to a turkey sandwich with a kick, the pizza was filling and different as well. We got some juices to go that were really good. We also got the purple sweet potato roll and that was good. Over all not a bad place to stop for a healthy lunch, just wish things had a little more flavor to them.

Yelp
Great vibes and a good option for healthy food. I got the cassava pizza with dairy-free cheese. My boyfriend got the chipotle black bean burger. My pizza was good and surprisingly very filling, I could only finish 3/4 of it. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of his burger. We had our dog with us so we had to sit outside but they had live music inside and it seemed like a good place to meet up with friends. It was pretty busy on a Saturday lunch service. Overall it was good

Yelp
Its a cute cafe with amazing vegetarian options! The staff was super friendly and the service was quick. We loved the food and recommend trying it out!

Yelp
I get so dehydrated being on a plane for over 5 hours to the Big Island and nothing quenches your thirst like fresh sugar cane juice. Got a 1/2 gallon where I enjoyed a cup on site and took the rest to go for our 2 nights in Hilo. The only strange thing is they don't have 1/2 gallon containers for fresh pressed cane juice to go so it was put into a gallon sized container half full. They only have 1/2 gallon jugs in the prepacked ones which costs more as we found out when we went back for a refill before heading to Kona and they rung it up as such. Tried the durian cacao smoothie as well but the sugar cane juice is where it's at.

Yelp
Get their freshly pressed sugarcane you won't regret it !! It's naturally sweet, cold & refreshing perfect after a hike to replenish. 16 ounces for $6 The macadamia nut pesto sandwich was delicious, just the right amount of melty mozzarella and basil pesto. Not heavily salted either so it's a healthy choice. I don't recall tasting macadamias but it may have been blended with the pesto giving it a crunchy bite, but nothing significant. It comes with a side of chips or daily specials. I had the pickled daikons, they were like natural vinegar chips. Even so, I wouldn't pay $16 for this sandwich next time. The spot has both indoors and outdoor seatings, clean bathrooms just outside the cafe, and a small parking lot in the bag. Staff had given us the wrong order, but kindly remade it once we let them know. Check in for 10% off your order

Yelp
It had been years since our last visit and to be quite frank, it'll probably be years before our next. We were on the search for the best açaí bowl in Hilo and heard many great things about Sweet Cane Cafe. We went and got a bowl to share and it tasted like...nothing. We were very confused because the smoothie itself was relatively flavorless. We also got a vegan(?) chocolate mousse dessert to take home for our family and they also didn't care for it. We were slightly disappointed by the acai bowl, but I hear the other menu items are pretty good. It is a cute cafe and has a lot of seating, so it'd be a good place to hang out and catch up with friends. I also think there's WiFi if you needed to get some work done.

Yelp
Farm to table at its finest! It was really nice to walk into an establishment and be greeted with sunshine! The lady behind the counter was so nice. She took her time with us as it was our first time there. We ended up ordering the spicy pickled pepper sandwich on gluten free bread and buckwheat and oat pancakes. It was delicious! I still haven't stopped thinking about the gluten free bread. The bread is made in house and all the ingredients are sourced locally. For me, I feel really good about supporting not only this local establishment but also the surrounding farms as well.

Yelp
I called in a phone order, really easy to place. Smoky taro burger - I opted for vegan Mac nut cheese over cheddar and no sprouts, so they asked if I wanted lettuce instead! My side was sauerkraut, and it tasted so good with the burger. The whole combo was delicious and I loved the Mac nut cheese. So glad I didn't listen to the reviews that said it was dry or not good. My fav meal on the Big Island so far Mango bliss smoothie - with mango, strawberry and lilikoi. not sure I tasted the lilikoi but still really tasty. We picked up and ate at a garden close by. They do have plenty of seating inside, water station. There are a ton of baked goods to choose from as well which I saw when I went in to pick up. Highly recommend stopping by! I would come again if we were staying in Hilo longer.

Yelp
Came in for lunch one day, and was pleasantly surprised with how many options there were! If you have food allergies or restrictions, this is a great choice. Their menu is focused on healthy, local, veg-forward, and mindful food choices. I had a vegan sandwich and grabbed a few baked goods on my way out. The sandwich was really good while eating it in the shop, though I found it less enjoyable leftover. Eat it there to fully enjoy the experience.

Yelp
We came in on a Thursday during Merrie Monarch. Everywhere we planned to go was busy & this had a lot of good reviews, so we ended up here as they just opened! We shared 3 sandwiches between 3 of us. Pesto, Spicy Pickled Pepper, & Grilled Cheese. The flavors for each sandwich were so good! They each had their own distinct taste. There was no meat in the sandwiches & it definitely didn't need it. We're so glad we came into this establishment. I could eat this every day. They have an option for gluten free bread!

Yelp
Wow. This place is outstanding. There is ample free parking and the store front restaurant is surprisingly large. It is a very natural feeling cafe lots of wood. The staff is warm and friendly. Be prepared for full house. We happily came for lunch on the early side and did not have to wait long. It was taco Tuesday, so we had the surprise pleasure of having jackfruit enchiladas. They were delicious- Serve with fresh guacamole and pineapple salsa. My LO Wanted the adult grilled cheese and it really delivered. It has lots of sauteed veggies. DH and I shared a cassava pizza and kale salad. The cassava pizza was less pizza and more casserole with toppings, but it was delicious. The kale salad was among the best that I have ever had. It was so delicious that we had to order dessert. The sweet potato brownie was rich and delicious. The banana bread muffins was over the top fantastic. It was still warm from the oven. I highly recommend their juices as well. All is super fresh and delicious. You should definitely check this place out.

Yelp
Incredible vegan-friendly cafe with so many kinds of food, baked goods, desserts, and drinks! Everything in the display cases and fridges looked so good, and the girl at the counter was super patient and nice while I browsed. I finally decided to try the durian mocha raw pie which was really cool- strong durian flavor and not overly sweet. I also got the raw nori wrap which was delicious! One note- a lot of the items are marked vegan even though they have honey, so be sure to read the ingredients if that matters to you. I definitely plan to come back to try more treats!

Yelp
So happy to find this gem of a place here in Hilo. Lovely ambiance, with fresh tropical flowers on every table. We came in here for breakfast and so glad we were the first ones at opening time. Soon the restaurant just filled up in minutes. The highlight of our breakfast was the SUGARCANE Juice. Freshly made and tasted it heavenly. Being an Indian this was one of my favorite memory of summer in childhood. I'm glad the kids were able to enjoy that in their own country. The microgreens were a great addition to all of the dishes. Such a lovely breakfast experience, felt like a great start to a vacation!

Yelp
Consistently delicious vegan cafe! Clean, large comfortable indoor dining area, or seating outside available. Very friendly staff with not too long of a wait! Love eating here

Yelp
Delicious!!!!!!! Pizza? AHmazing. Smoothies? Sooo yummy! Salad was very fresh. Whole restaurant has a very cute, cozy and wholesome vibe. Fresh, vibrant, flavorful and delicious food.

Yelp
Stopped for the kale salad and was not disappointed. It was delicious! Calm ambiance inside

Yelp
Recent trip to Hilo and decided to check out sweet cane Cafe. They have their own parking lot and interior was refreshing with lots of tables and space. The front area sells lots of local coffee, honey, essential oils, dressing, pressed juices and chilled desserts. Service was friendly and my breakfast was delicious. My buckwheat pancakes were delicious and I loved the fresh banana and mango that it was topped with. I also had Ka'u cold brew coffee which was yummy! They also have a large selection of smoothies that look delicious, I'll need to try one next time. Great place with healthy local food.

Yelp
If you have a few minutes, Sweet Cane Cafe offers the sweetest vegetarian experience. They have fresh, energizing food, not fast processed food. - Sweet Potato Brownie is rich, we try not to eat it before our real food - Jalapeno Ulu Burger! They are often out of it so I'm grateful when I can order it. I usually substitute a side salad instead of the bun - Ulu Poke is also really good - Smoothies - Shots of juice and all the goodness

Kristen S.

Yelp
10/10 Recommend Acai bowls were blended perfectly, smooth consistency . These are 24oz bowls , I ate half and was able to save the other half for later. $16 each

Yelp
If you're looking for something healthy to offset the locomoco and lau lau come here. Nice spot with a big air conditioned dining room. Got their two patty dish and had the ulu and taro burger. Also got ulu chowder and a cane juice. All tasted great

Yelp
Wonderful place with great ambiance and delicious sustainable ingredients juices and pizza.

Yelp
Didn't have the best experience here. I appreciate what they are trying to do here (support local business, offer fresh and healthy options...), which is why I visited and wanted to support, but probably wouldn't return. They (and I think most places on the island) were unfortunately out of açaí, which is what I initially wanted, but luckily they said I could get any smoothie made into a bowl, so I got the mango bliss. The bowl itself was pretty basic, it's just coconut granola and maybe a quarter of a banana sliced up thin. Prices are fair, but I'd probably go elsewhere to get a more interesting smoothie bowl.

Yelp
The two of us came in for their first time, even though we've been living here for two years. We ordered bagel with cream cheese and sprouts, a coffee, avocado, toast, banana bread, soup and carrot cake $50 pretty expensive meals but the food is fresh and worth it OK. Must tell you it was not worth it. The banana bread was extremely dry. The soup had hardly any flavor. Avocado toast, with simply that avocado cut on a piece of toast no pizzazz no thought. The one thing that was good was a carrot cake. We will not be back. On a positive note, decent service, and friendly people
google avatar

Judith E.

Yelp
Healthy fresh and tasty. I had the ulu burger with a side a of pumpkin soup. The soup was more of a stew and was extremely flavorful. The ulu burger was delicious. My 10 year old granddaughter loved everything as we always taste each other's plate. She had the açaí bowl and was not disappointed. Plenty of seating and a parking lot also makes this place attractive. Sometimes in Kona or Hilo, parking becomes the deciding factor in which restaurant we choose.
google avatar

Carly Grace H.

Yelp
Delicious gluten-free, dairy free pancakes and drinks! I got my with mango and defrosted strawberries the first time to drink a Turmeric Mlyk blueberries the 2nd time with mango and blueberries and a coconut iced matcha Guest wifi
google avatar

Cheryl L.

Yelp
Great spot! Super fast service and very friendly. Everything is house made / farm to table and vegetarian. Their macadamia nut pesto sandwich was good, but I really liked the "poke" made of ube and taro. In addition got sugar cane juice, and a lilikoi, ube, and haupia cake. Everything was pretty solid
google avatar

Brandy W.

Yelp
Stopped in at this local Hilo joint for lunch along our drive around the island. We bought to-go, but they had a display case of desserts, sides, various dried fruits and things. There was also a large dine-in area and clearly people loved it because it was pretty full. The place is vegetarian and serves only V or VG foods from what I could tell. Taro burger was good, but the taro was very mild and the bun was pretty dry and dense. I did love the macadamia but spread (asked to swap this with the taronaise) bc it was super flavorful. I also got a side of sauerkraut and if you're a kraut fan, this can't be missed. Once added to the burger, it was phenom. The husband got a poi bowl thing and it looked good.
google avatar

Sarahbeth M.

Yelp
Well, I had three hairs in my smoothie and I wasn't impressed with the gluten free bread. For having vegan and gluten free options I'm sad to say I wasn't impressed. The food was all very bland and having hairs in a smoothie is a huge turnoff. I was hoping this would be my regular cafe but sad to say I won't be coming back again. Super busy place and decent ambiance, but isn't worth me coming back.
google avatar

Austyn N.

Yelp
Tasty food, kind servers, and a calm space to relax. I enjoyed their different food options.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood vegan place. Great, friendly service. Very casual place a bit worn around the edges but the food was great.
google avatar

Karishma A.

Yelp
This place looks beautiful- love love the ambiance. My friends and I got the poke bowl, grilled cheese sandwich, black bean burger, squash soup, sugarcane juice, and tea. The place is on the expensive side considering my bill came out to be above $80 I loved the poke bowl - it was very very different from what I expected but delicious. It's kinda like potato salad but subtly different. My friends didn't really enjoy their order however - both the burger and sandwich were dry - they could have used some sauce. The burger patty - black bean - was kinda delicate and fell apart and was under seasoned. It really needed some salt and it's quite drying so some sauce! The soup was quite nice. The cafe hosts were really friendly and let us try a couple of things while we were ordering! On the whole - considering half of the order wasn't really delicious and the price I am in split minds about recommending this place.

Yelp
Last minute breakfast in Hilo brought us to Sweet Cane Cafe. Nice place featuring food ingredients from their farm near Pahoa. I ordered the veggie poke bowl and french press coffee. Within a few minutes the coffee was delivered, rich, bold, piping hot and delicious. A few minutes after the coffee was delivered the poke was delivered to the table. Super fresh, delicious and very filling. What a great find!
google avatar

Darryl S.

Yelp
A terrific little cafe we popped into before our flight to Oahu. Definitely a different kind of poke! Coffee was excellent.

Chloe P.

Yelp
They have lots of interesting flavor combos here. The presentation was gorgeous and the blueberry coffee smoothie I had was delicious. It feels homey inside and the employees were nice. The only thing I would suggest is to say that everything is vegetarian somewhere on the menu. (Unless there already is and I missed it) My partner ordered a burger here not knowing that it didn't have meat. It was a surprise but he still enjoyed it. Will definitely be coming back when I'm up Hilo side!

Yelp
I have to give a 4 stars to this place for having a variety of vegetarian options as well as vegan options. Several of their baked goods were vegan so of course we grabbed some of the vegan banana breads. Pesto sandwich:4 stars. The best one. It was delicious and cheesy. Taro burger: 2.5 stars. Meh. A bit mushy in texture even with the cheese. Not much flavor to the patty itself. Vegetable lentil curry with rice: 2 stars. my dad said the curry was good but there was very little of it and most of it was the brown rice. They serve the to go in one cup with the rice in the bottom and curry topped. Seems weird because it would mush up the rice... also the rice was 2/3 of the cup with the curry only filling about 1/3. I was not too happy with this. Cassava fritter: 1 star. tasted tumeric but cassava was still a bit hard. Also no sauce to help flavor. It was somewhat bland with just the tumeric. Cane juice: 3 stars. tasted ok. I've had sugar cane juice fresh squeezed many times before but it was really light (maybe my fault for letting the ice melt before drinking it. Durian cacao shake:5 stars for even having this as an options. but the cacao surprisingly help muted out the durian flavor. I do like durian so I enjoyed the shake immensely. Overall, I'm glad the restaurant provided some options for vegetarian and vegan diets. Some dishes were good and some were lackluster. I would t mind coming back it I'll probably try some different dishes.

Cole O.

Yelp
Love this place 85 characters long review is kinda pointless... everything at Sweet Cane is delicious.

Michael A.

Yelp
Super fresh food! Very waiter was super helpful and very chill. I had work to do so I used the free wifi for a couple hours. It was a very quiet spot.
google avatar

Josephine N.

Yelp
All vegan cafe! Dishes were new to me but very tasty. The sugarcane was previously frozen but decent. Would return for the food!
google avatar

Sydni K.

Yelp
I went to Sweet Cane Cafe for breakfast on a Sunday morning. It's in a residential area, but there's lots of parking in the lot. There's other businesses in the lot, but Sweet Cane Cafe is at the corner closest to the street. I totally missed the entrance the first time I drove past it, but there is a decent sized sign that says Sweet Cane Cafe. I just wasn't paying attention haha and was listening to my map. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, but the cashier offered suggestions. I ended up ordering the bagel sandwich. The bagel was thin and had lots of cream cheese and sprouts, which I loved! It also came with a side, and I chose the sweet potato poke. This was one of the best "pokes" I've had. The potato wasn't too heavy, and it was seasoned perfectly to taste like poke! There was a lot of indoor seating with a few outdoor tables. It has a very homey ambiance and would probably be a great place to do work. Overall, a relaxing place with delicious, healthy food in Hilo.

Aysha B.

Yelp
This place is so delicious. Tons of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. Food is fresh and high quality and I'm in love
google avatar

Valerie L.

Yelp
Oh this place is a gem! We tried the cacao drink and golden mylk and had them both warmed. So delish! The matcha was yummy, the pancakes were bomb w super fresh fruit! The acai bowl was also very good and better than we've had over in California for sure! They have a nice selection of pre-made items in the fridge. I'd love to eat my way through the whole menu but hence my time on Big Island came to an end...for now. :)

Andrea M.

Yelp
If you love vegan, organic food this will be a highlight. Not vegan myself but fresh ingredients, locally grown and I really enjoyed the meal. Chill vibe, great service.

Julia K.

Yelp
The service and french-pressed Ka'u coffee was great. The dinning area is larger than I expected with plenty of seating in a cozy "Hilo town" setting. Will definitely be stopping by for breakfast more often.
google avatar

Kshama P.

Yelp
They've a good variety ranging from savory to sweet, freshly baked items and frozen/cold items as well as snacks for purchase. Indoor and outdoor seating, easy access, parking lot right outside and restrooms available. Went in on Saturday morning, not busy so we got our food right away. Got a vegan poke bowl (good flavors but too heavy on the taro), raw cacao pie (delicious) and ginger creme cane juice (yum).
google avatar

Adel W.

Yelp
Unassuming from the outside, but the inside is beautiful and large and has so much fun stuff! I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I loved my picked pepper sandwich and sauerkraut, and my coconut limeade sugarcane juice tasted like liquid key lime pie! Everything was super fresh and tasty, loved the vibe here.
