Portland Restaurants and Bars to Visit During Feast 2018 - Eater Portland

"Pregame those Pacific Rim delights with a Neapolitan-style pizza. Sweet Heart, a project from prolific fast-casual restaurateurs Matt Lynch and Micah Camden, is an airy, counter-service spot perfect for a quick bite before Night Market; try the simple Margherita or something salty and fun like the lamb merguez. Close to: Zidell Yards" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Mattie John Bamman

Google
While this bread was delicious, the menu lists it as "cheese sticks" and provides four options for the type of cheese sticks you'd like (no photo). Maybe that should have been a red flag, but I was disappointed when I got this home to find this was just bread covered in melted cheese of my choosing rather than actual cheese sticks - which was what I needed for the wine pairing I'd planned to try (Austrian Zweigelt & cheese sticks). I got the real cheese sticks elsewhere, but be warned if you order that this is actually cheesy bread.

Was able to pick up a nice little treat from Sweet Heart the other week! They've got a nice location in South West. It seems that they are only doing take out because they had a booth out front blocking the door and you could either place your order there or order beforehand. I understand this is the way it has to be and they do a good job of keeping everyone safe!! We had the Mushroom pizza, definitely a good choice. Was a tad burnt but flavors were all still there. I look forward to having them reopen the restaurant and getting the full Sweet Heart experience

Google
The mushroom vegan white sauce pizza (can't remember the name lol) was AMAZING!!! Might be my favorite vegan pizza in town. And the staff is so friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend!

Best restaurant in south Waterfront. Thinner crust pizza, not oily, and simply but flavorful toppings

Google
Really sad this place is still not back open. We’ve gotten this pizza to go (before COVID) several times and always loved it. I should add my husband is from Italy and he enjoys his pizza every time here. He always gets the margarita and I get the margarita and add salami - so good!! We miss this place.

Google
The Pizza was AMAZING!!! Love the customer service and the atmosphere! Best pizza I’ve tasted in Portland by far.

This place is close to where I live so I eat there regularly. I love their Potato pizza and caesar salad 👌🏼

Google
Last minute pizza order around 8pm and I was glad I found Sweet Heart Pizza that was open and still taking orders. Great flavor and evenly placed toppings not too much not too little. The margarita pizza I added more cheese for $1 at it was so worth it. Crust was a bit too much white flour for me but over all a good crust. Fast delivery and for Neo style I really enjoyed. Reasonable priced as well I would def order from here again! Thank you for serving me in this heat.

Yelp
Thin crust pizza is the only pizza I eat so I was thrilled when Sweet Heart Pizza moved into the S Waterfront area. Their pizza is cooked in a wood fire oven and comes out piping hot with a nice char on the crust, which has the necessary al dente chew. Sometimes there is too much char, IMO, so it's hit or miss. I try to remember to ask for just a light char. With pizza, I think less is more. Our go-to are the Margarita, which is tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and topped with fresh basil. For me, you need to be able to get this simple three ingredient pizza right for me to try more. Well, done! The Pepperoni is also classic and theirs comes with plenty of pepperoni so you taste the spicy pepperoni with every single bite! Delish. We've also tried the fennel and sausage that has a white cream sauce, not usually my choice, bit it is very good and it's crave worthy. Sausage and fennel are a perfect combo. The Cesar Salad and their fresh green salads are the perfect accompaniment. If the beat and goat cheese salad is in the menu, get it! Prices for their 14" pies range from $12-16 and for Portland, that is very reasonable. I'm from NJ where you can get a stellar pizza on every street corner for under $15. When I moved to Portland and experienced $24 sub-par pies, I was in shock! When eating there, they have craft beer, hard cider and several wines available by the glass or bottle. It's refreshing to be able to get a glass of wine for $6-8. Thank you for keeping it real and reasonable. While I won't go as far as saying this is the best pizza in Portland - Apizza Scholls continues to rank #1 in my book - Sweet Heart makes a darn good, Neapolitan style pizza at regular people prices, with great service, in a comfortable and clean atmosphere. Plus takeout during Covid. All combined, makes it a five star pizza joint.

Yelp
Crispy, tasty thin crust pizza, perfect for a light lunch! My wife and I had appointments in the nearby OHSU CHH building, and in-between them, we stopped in for a slice! We ordered a half Quatro Formaggio, half Spicy Lamb, catering to both of our tastes, and each of us ended up being happy with our choice In fact, my wife raved that it was among the best pizza she'd ever had! I appreciate a good pizza place that knows how to let the ingredients do the heavy lifting, as well as not weighing me down with unnecessary carbs and calories, due to an absurdly thick crust. In this regard, Sweet Heart has found the sweet spot! We'll definitely be back, the next time we're on the South Waterfront.

Yelp
Came back to Sweet Heart Pizza again! Got their sausage fennel and their mushroom pizza! The sausage fennel pizza has white sauce, provolone cheese, Italian sausage, shallots, scallions, and fennel pollen. It kind of reminded me of a cheese pizza but creamier and with meat because there isn't much texture to the pizza. The mushroom pizza has white sauce, tallegio, roasted oyster mushrooms, lemon peels, sage, roasted whole garlic. I really love their roasted garlic with the oyster mushrooms, then the pop of lemon peels brings some freshness. The sausage fennel pizza was good, but my favorite is still the mushroom pizza! The pizza is big enough for one person if you have a big appetite or can be shared with two people.

Yelp
Soooooo good! This is our go to pizza joint! Thankfully, it is located at the base of our apartment complex so it is always convenient to get our favorite pizza, anytime we want. This is our Friday night tradition. Has been for over a year and we have never had a bad slice of pizza or experience. The toppings are plentiful and incredibly fresh, the pizza is typically ready within 10 or 15 minutes. Best of all, we are always greeted with a smile when we walk in the door. My personal favorite is pepperoni with green olives. However, they also have a very good Hawaiian and margarita pizza. The next time you are in the South Waterfront area, check them out!

Yelp
So I'll be totally honest - it had been awhile since I had good pizza. I had kind of given up on quality pizza and given in to the convenience of round table and ... frozen grocery store pizza ... so when I found out about this place I went in with zero expectations. HOLY MOLY WHY HAD I BEEN SETTLING FOR SO LONG. I ordered the mushroom pizza and the Caesar salad (cuz ya know, balance right?) and boy was it delicious! Their crust and dough were flavorful and the combination of ingredients were different but so complimentary. Like who puts lemon on a pizza? But it was the perfect addition of flavors!! Portion sizes were perfect and we even had leftovers. I can't wait to try more of their pizza and may even take a risk and try their vegan cheese option.

Yelp
I'll give a four on potential and the likelihood that some one will like it more than me. It's pizza. I was just thinking how one thing that kind of annoys me about wood fired pizza is that the crust is boring. However if the bitterness of the char is counteracting something else then I get it. I was pleased to see a glistening crust. Perhaps this is topped with fun. Unfortunately it was a little salty. Not pretzel salty but a little salty. I got the Hawaiian. While I appreciate prosciutto use it was also quite salty. Combined with the crust, we're now sitting double salty. Sauce was standard sauce and a fair amount of cheese. I really didn't want to take leftovers and wasting any of a $14 pizza just didn't sit right so I ate the whole thing and exacerbated my headache. I appreciate the spiced pineapple. This was fresh cut seasoned pineapple, not that garbage from a can which the haters love to hate upon. Service was friendly and the space inviting. I have a sensitive palate for salt so maybe I'll bring the wife and she'll dig it.

Yelp
Simply delicious and straightforward pizza and seasonal salads. $12 for Margherita pizza - it's a good slice $8 for the squash salad - great textures $3 for a bottle of sprite Very affordable lunch for two. I found street parking easily, though the rate for an hour 15 minutes was $3 vs $1.70 in downtown and SE Portland. It's good for parties of 2-6, I think 8 people might be tight. I'd like to try the mushroom, potato, or sausage & fennel pizza next time with the roasted beets.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the potato pizza today and it's ridiculously good. I'm obsessed. Definitely in the top 5 pizzas I've ever had. Will be my new regular order from here for sure! I've had the cheese and margarita pizzas as well and they're pretty good. The ceaser salad is okay but would be better if it came with more than one small slice of lemon. If you go here get the potato pizza I'm telling you! I wasn't planning to make a review so I didn't take a picture before we started eating but it's so good I had to.

Yelp
Good pizza not great. Great dough...on the sweeter side...I wouldn't mind a basket of just warm, thin dough. I don't feel like the toppings really added much...the crust wasn't even crispy. The salad makes me angry...like seriously...angry...I mean...most salads disappoint me...but this one made me angry. Just not enough...really light, no filler...hardly any notes of garlic...in a Caesar? Barely any parmesan...seriously question whether or not I got the right salad but there was enough of those components to affirm I had the right salad. Next time, i'll just stick with the pizza...or if I can just get a couple of crusts :) The seem to have a great set up for take out during Covid...they've at least got that going for them.
google avatar

Louise G.

Yelp
Much better now. They seem to be more consistent. I wish they have more traditional pizza toppings though.
google avatar

Yelp
I really liked their Quattro Formaggi pizza! The price of $14 was a decent price but the $10 salad was a bit small for that price. They are super friendly and quick. Give them a try!

Yelp
I've lived a block away for 2 years and I finally made it to this cute place! I have a serious concern that needs to be addressed, but otherwise I throughly enjoy the food and would love to return. The hubby and I shared the merguez fennel pie and the squash salad. We LOVED the salad. It was a very big portion and could feed up to 4. Salad fiends that we are, we ate the whole thing. The pizza was pretty darn good, too. Definitely better than Pizzicato a few blocks away. The salad and pizza combo made the bill about $25 with tip, and we were nice and satisfied. SERIOUS CONCERN: I saw the guy who was slinging pies take his shoe off and inspect his foot as he had a massive hole in his sock and then put his shoe back on, and return to work without washing his hands. There was a lot of gross foot-touching. Management - can you please get that under control? Yuck.

Yelp
Ok so... welcome to the neighborhood Heart Pizza! It's been a long time coming... but South Waterfront finally has a wood fire pizza restaurant to call its own. The storefront is located at street level on the northeast corner of The Riva apartment building. Great location for the residents of the area but a tough area to find parking. The Portland streetcar and Tri Met stop within a block so for outsiders coming in it's a great way to get there. Micah Camden, one of the owners, was actually on site checking product quality and training. He seemed really engaged and it was nice to see an owner engaged. Everyone working was very busy as there was a continual feed of patrons through the door. The guy that took the order was very pleasant and welcomed us to Heart pizza. We ordered both a Margherita and a Pepperoni pizzas to go. I literally watched Mr. Camden supervise the quality control of our pizzas from start to completion is he work the long side his employees. Pizzas were complete within 10 minutes but they were busy. Not bad at all! Not only were the toppings just right but the pizzas were cooked perfectly. The sauces were very rich and authentic but the meat was high-quality and not greasy as well. Very tasty! Thank you... winner winner PIZZA dinner! :-)

Yelp
First time I have ever tried a SH Pizza, I got the Spicy Lamb. The green olives and pickled red onions were too delicious-sounding for me to choose anything else. The lamb was pretty darn spicy, but the feta evens it out a bit which is nice. The lamb was tender and flavorful though! The crust was a little thin and charred for my taste, but that's just my preference. The pizza size itself is more of a personal. If two people were going to share, I would want to get a side if I was really hungry. Service was on-time, knowledgable and friendly. What a cute takeout window!

Yelp
Sweet Heart is NY Style Pizza that is borderline Neopolitan. I like their pizza a lot, one of the best pizza shops in Portland!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
This is the go to pizza parlor in Southwest Portland. It's a good thin crust pizza, a 7-7.5 of 10

Yelp
Seeet Heart Pizza is back! Yay!!! Their menu is tightened up a bit, limited to 2 great salads and 8 pizza options. (They have GF crust now, btw.). Staff is super friendly. You can order thru their website and just pick up your order at their window kiosk. Or you can give them a call. They also have delivery thru Door Dash. Here is their updated menu

Yelp
I arrived and entered the store and was standing at the counter before they open at 10:30am, they open at 11am. Girl comes out from back tells me "we're not open yet", ok No problem, I would just come back... but what pissed me off is the employee that was there in front, he looked at me several times, saw me standing there and never peeped a word just left me standing there a couple minutes. Would've taken him 5 seconds to give a little customer service.

Yelp
I loved this spot. It conveniently located and delicious. It isn't your typical pizza spot but it was different. Don't expect your basic pizza because you might be disappointed. Their flavors are unique and delicious. The beets were very good along with the kale salad and the ceased salad. The pizzas are decently sized and the crust is thinner and crispy. We ordered the mushroom pizza which is baked with lemon on it so it does have a citrus taste to it but if you like mushrooms and citrus you'll love it. We also tried the vegetarian which was delicious. Overall it was a great place to eat. There is also a park near where you can walk off the food and relax. Highly recommend checking this place out and giving them a try. The price isn't bad either.

Yelp
Sweet Heart is a cute little pizza place located in the South Waterfront area of Portland, near OHSU and right amongst an up and coming housing and retail development. It's also right next door to a large open grassy park. We stopped in for lunch while wandering around the area and split a pizza between 2 people (though I'd suggest also ordering a salad too as my boyfriend wasn't completely satisfied after finishing his half). The staff was able to split toppings for us - his half was Hawaiian and mine was vegan Margherita. While I did not actually see vegan cheese noted on the menu, we asked one of the employees and were pleasantly surprised to find that they do in fact offer this option. The pizza itself was a little bit on the crunchy side for me (I tend to like pizza a tad fluffier), but I loved the salted crust! We enjoyed ours at their lovely outdoor tables, but taking it next door to the park would have been a nice option as well.

Skylar C.

Yelp
My Hawaiian pizza had almost no cheese and as a result too saucy. I cannot recommend.
google avatar

Katelyn S.

Yelp
Very cute and cozy vibe with a unique, ever changing menu. Crust perfection. Gooey paninis. Yummy, veggie dense sides. Rotating beer on tap and perfectly selected assortment of bottled beer, wine, and soda.
google avatar

Lisa V.

Yelp
I miss Sweetheart Pizza! Please reopen soon, even if only for takeout. Such a great pizza (love the crust) and adorable shop. I miss the awesome staff as well.

Greg H.

Yelp
Needed something simple and relatively quick. I had the spicy lamb pizza. Being a devotee of traditional Italian pizza, this is extremely good. Bread, sauce, toppings all good. Loved the green olive twist. Btw, if you order a glass of wine while you wait, order the wine first. They are fast...on a Saturday night.
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
I am not sure how you can sell a burnt pizza and not notice it is burnt. I usually love their pizza, salads and sides but tonight it was a major disappointment. At least try to be good on the quality of product you provide to clients.
google avatar

Graff J.

Yelp
How many more ingredients could they have taken off bf having to officially call this BREAD??
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
I'm not really sure what was going on the day I ate here. My pizza was fine BUT this location was so full of smoke that you could not sit inside. PLUS quick pizza? Nope. In their defense, they had a huge order that was turned out soon after we arrived. But I wish I had been told how long it would take. My margherita pizza was fine, not great, not terrible. The beverage choices were meh. So I appreciated the chilled water that was available. I was in & out as quickly as possible because of the smoke and the staff seemed stressed. I can see it being popular with local worker bees...if they can produce a fast pizza.
google avatar

Ricci H.

Yelp
I'd review the food, if I had ever ordered. Three times I've walked into this establishment and I've been ignored. The service staff is too busy in their own conversations to even acknowledge the presence of customers....now that Portland is a "pizza" town, I'd skip this place. Maybe the pizza is great, but who knows?!?
google avatar

Austin C.

Yelp
We live down the street and always love this place. So delicious and the staff are so friendly. Recently a person was walking by with groceries, while we were sitting out front eating, her grocery bag unexpectedly broke and she dropped her things all over the sidewalk. An employee ran out with replacement bags and helped the woman recover from the spill, super thoughtful!!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I was super hungry and decided to stop in. The staff were friendly, and the pizza was done fairly fast. I was conflicted about what to get and ended up having the clam pizza. I was really impressed by the flavors. I especially loved the pickled lemon slices and the really delicious sauce. The crust had a nice, fluffy chew, but I could have used just a bit more crispness. My main complaint is the clams on the pizza were sort of limited and chopped. I used to live in New Haven, CT and was used to plump, fresh clams dotting my pizza. I get that there might be a need to limit costs, but I wouldn't mind fewer clams if they were whole. I still ate almost the whole pizza in one sitting, so I can't say it wasn't a-okay, but I think it could be slightly better.

Brent N.

Yelp
Sweetheart pizza is the best pizza in Portland. The crust (the base of all pizza) is incredible and then they build from there. You can't go wrong with their menu.
google avatar

Niraj R.

Yelp
Great place to have pizza. Quick service. Nice thin crust. Oliveto had a very refreshing flavor- the almond orange pesto was amazing. Wife loved the sausage fennel too. Will return for sure to try the other flavors!

Bossy G.

Yelp
The pizzas are lovely. I highly reccommend. But such a disappointment that they no longer have their amazing salads. every restaurant in town has Caesar and mixed greens. Sweetheart made delicious salads, fresh and added things like roasted squash. Where have they gone.? Not having them is a deal breaker for me. Makes me sad. Just another thing Covid took away.

Mary H.

Yelp
Does anyone know why they are closed? The Yelp pages says they'll open April 2023, doesn't sound good.
google avatar

Clifford H.

Yelp
Delicious pizza for reasonable price. Sausage fennel with mushroom was good. For the thin and small size it is pricy, still a good craving filler.
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
I got the margarita with pineapple. The pizza was nice but something was missing. Overall it was worth trying.
google avatar

Chels O.

Yelp
My friend and I ordered the white sauce sausage pizza add prosciutto, but they forgot the cheese. How do you forget cheese... overall good vibe. Nice place to waterfront condos, but idk if I would recommend it if you have the ability to drive to another part of Portland for a better slice.
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
Ok, the price is worth it. Ingredients are excellent and the crust is among my favorite in Portland. We just moved out of state and I will surely miss Sweetheart Pizza. I took a bunch of people here after they helped us pack up our moving truck and they all loved it. Great food. Great pizza. Good atmosphere. Eat here.
google avatar

Tess A.

Yelp
We are visiting from out of town & found this place on a whim, and whoa! This place is SO GOOD!!! The ingredients are fresh and the pizza was cooked to perfection, we were super impressed! We will be back next time we visit!! Keep up the amazing work.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Ordered DoorDash. ETA was about 75 min. At 70 min, the dasher told us he was there but it would be another 60 min+. Ultimately it doubled our time. Pizza was not hot despite living only 5-10 min away. Super disappointing and overpriced.
google avatar

Carlinn Y.

Yelp
Pretty amazed by the flavors of the pizza, really enjoyed the flavor of the crust as well. Their cheese shakers were all nice and full and the cheese was very hydrated and peppers spicy. Thank you!

Yelp
My wife ordered for me and my first thought was why did I do that.... oh how I was so wrong.. I am going to take you all on a journey that defies sheer logic and time, even stepping into another dimension of my visit here at Sweet Heart. Let me start off by saying I will only review a place of food if it is either mind blowingly good or uncannily bad. I don't do in between because who has time for mediocre eats? No one does, so stop eating at Pizza Hut because its straight trash. Now back to the story. My meal begins like any other family going out somewhere would, you want to enjoy what you eat and this place had decent reviews, plus it was close to where we were and that was pretty much the defining factor at this point. My wife is a connoisseur of things like vegetables, and plants and all that stuff that I personally feel we could all live without. I knew that if I let her order though, my marriage would be happier and I would probably live longer as she tends to pick the healthier options when we do dine out. She said we would get a salad (barf) another side (which she was favoring the golden beets, also didn't sound appetizing) and then the pizza special. Each of these will now have their own dissertation. Let's start with the Squash Salad. I was super reluctant to even try this. like who thinks to put squash in a freaking salad? Isn't a salad messed up enough as it is? Ha... as I was blankly staring out into the streets of Portland watching the people freeze out in the wind my hand had been stabbing at some tender arugula mixed with almonds, butter nut squash, balsamic and what imagined to be the only thing holding this salad together, parmesan. IF you have ever seen Dr. Strange you will know what I am talking about when the Ancient One touches his head and BAM he is off in all crazy part of the known and unknown universe? Yeah it got my attention like that. Every flavor in that salad was in such great harmony that I tenderly held the bowl after it was gone wishing that I could eat it all again, and again, and again. The tender arugula, the crunch of the chopped almonds, the perfection of the squash chunks and drizzle of balsamic, equally yoked with parm.. Seriously whoever created this must be some form of a being from another planet..OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD. Next we talk about gold. Golden beets of course. Now, I like beets and ill eat them at home as often as I can, we have even pickled beet (a favorite of mine) and so, why not? But I hesistated.. goat cheese... not a huge fan. To me it tastes like dirt, or outside earthy garbage, so reluctantly I tried them as well. I am salivating thinking about those delectable pickled golden gems of goodness smothered in a pesto dressing and garnished with the finest goat cheese that has ever been created. Those flavors together got me to actually enjoy and rethink goat cheese. I hated it before and this..this was just out of control good. 5 stars for this amazing creation of pure awesome. Finally the pizza. The creation of the day the Carciofo. However you spell it I am sure in some other language it means delicious. I am not new to open fire pizza and some people make it better than others for sure. This place does it well. The special we got because my wife loves artichoke hearts and this had it, along with katamala olives, aged mozz and other delectable toppings that were equal to nothing short of great. Hats off to you well organized cookers of deliciousness. In short, don't even read any other reviews, go have a good time, indulge your senses (all of them) into a world (and out of this world) experience that is sure to get your Sweet Heart on your good side for date night. Unless your are single, but even then its still really good and worth it.

Yelp
Full disclosure, I ordered from PostMates. Not sure who was responsible for the pizzas arriving really cold. This pizza wasn't for me as the crust almost tasted underdone or burnt (depending on the slice). The pizzas we ordered were the potato one, mushroom one, and margarita. Mushroom one had great flavor, it was the favorite of the 3 that we ordered. Overall, I'm sure some folx will really like this pizza. Just not for us.

Jacob R.

Yelp
Unbelievable taste. Noticeably quality. Hands down the best Za I've ever had. Elizabeth and Zoe are the best!
google avatar

BP A.

Yelp
Thank goodness for sweat heart pizza! Hands down one of the best pizza joints in town. Everyone has their opinions regarding pizza, and this is mine. I could eat sweat heart pizza all day everyday! It's the closest thing I've found to a Napolese style wood fired pizza in Portland. We typically order at. Least 3 or 4 pizzas at a time for the two of us, cause they're just that good!
google avatar

Waxx M.

Yelp
Great pizza with very fresh topping crunchy crust and a nice options for mixing topping ... Only had delivery and was very happy, taste like a wood oven pizza should taste. I don't get the most other poor reviews only complaining on the price point ! Show me other pizzas places in town with same quality for cheaper ?!
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Perfectly charred crust, flavorful sauce & good amount of cheese to toppings ratio! Had the Rapini pie & will be back to try the others next time. Great addition to the Waterfront area, bonus points for cute decor & proximity to Blue Star!
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
5 stars all the way, this small wood fired pizza place sets a cozy down to earth feel that you can really get into. The pizzas were big for the price and the flavors of both the sausage and the lamb left me wanting more. We will definitely be going back and telling our friends is a must!

Yelp
No, No, NO... this place is all wrong! I live in the neighborhood and have been looking forward to giving Heart Pizza a try. I'm sad to say my meal was terribly disappointing. No beer on tap... only cans No wine by the glass... You can get a CAN of wine (about 2 servings or a bottle (Limited selection). We had an arugula salad and Caesar salad... Both were fair/average. We ordered the Rapini pizza and added sausage. The rapini was extremely bitter. The pizza had minimal (MINIMAL!) cheese - and this is from someone who does not like cheesy pizza. And lastly, the tomato sauce was flavorless... no salt, no basil, no onion, NO FLAVOR! I did like the texture of the crust... At least I can say one positive thing. Honestly, the best part of the meal was my can of red wine. I hope this tells you something. There is too much good pizza to be eaten and enjoyed in the town. Don't waste your time or money on this place (Go to Apizzascholls, Lovely's Fifty Fifty, Pizza Jerk or Please Louise). I really expected more from a Micah Camden restaurant... I'm usually a fan (Not today!).
