July /7/2024 Welcome back Sweet Lady Jane I feared she had left us I had the pleasure of tasting three of their most extraordinary creations: their Cherry Pie, Red Velvet Cake, and Triple Berry Cheesecake. The Cherry Pie is simply perfect. Each slice is thick and filled with exquisite cherries, a triumph of flavors that burst with every bite. The crust is flaky and buttery, creating a wonderful contrast with the juiciness of the cherries. A generous slice allows you to fully enjoy the pie, just the way I love it, offering a taste experience that completely envelops you. The Red Velvet Cake is another masterpiece. Fresh and incredibly delicious, each slice is a treat for both the eyes and the taste buds. The soft, velvety texture pairs perfectly with the creamy, light frosting, creating a perfect balance of flavors and textures. Every bite is an experience you’ll want to repeat over and over again. Lastly, the Triple Berry Cheesecake was a delightful surprise. Even though the price has increased compared to last year, every penny spent is absolutely worth it. The slice is generous and incredibly fresh, with a balanced flavor and a creaminess that melts in your mouth. The berries add a touch of freshness and tartness that perfectly complements the sweetness of the cheesecake. Despite the higher cost, you don’t mind paying a bit extra for such excellent quality.

Best cake ever!! We had a custom made oder for our daughter’s graduation party — they works with me in design and the end result exceeded my expectation. even more delightful was the cake itself - full of flavor and incredibly moist. i highlly recommend SLJ.

Google
Very delicious, yet light tripple berry cake. One slice portion is big, enough for 2 people!

When I visited for the first time, I was truly touched by how beautifully the desserts were arranged. The variety of options made it such an enjoyable experience! Rosie was incredibly kind and took the time to share the top three popular desserts, which I really appreciated. I absolutely loved the welcoming atmosphere of this place and felt so comfortable. I can’t wait to come back and savor more of those delightful treats!

So I almost always leave positive reviews and I try not to go on here and leave negative reviews, but I have to say the last two times I went here (And I gave it two times because I was hoping it would be different the second time) my cupcake was completely stale and hard. The buttercream icing wasn’t sweet at all. Just a bummer. And one day it was buy a cupcake get one free and I had to literally ask for the free cupcake, they didn’t ask me. So I don’t know. I prefer sprinkles or Susie Cakes wayyyyy over this. Sad because this place used to be good.

The sandwiches are very tasty made with their own bread. Iced Americano was perfectly strong & smooth. The service was WONDERFUL from the team of ladies today.

Google
A beautiful case full of unique cakes, cookies, scones, bars. We tried one of the cookies, and a macaroon, with a cappuccino. Definitely the best macaroon I've ever tasted. The servings are very generous too! Yum!

Google
The carrot cake was delicious but cold, I do not think you should serve by slice if is straight from the fridge. I ate after some 3 hours at ambient temperature and was right delicious. The servers also didn't help me to bring cake and coffee outside, even if I had a small baby to take care of.

Yelp
Service isn't my favorite here, but they have plenty of outdoor seating as well as some indoor seating. Their carrot cake is absolutely phenomenal.

Yelp
1/18/25 - ref Typo. SLJ as in Sweet Lady Jane on Montana. SAT- 01/18/25 - SLJ Not up to par with its legacy reputation I once knew so well.. now: overall proportion - noticeable a quarter smaller than before, the to go boxing - my slice was smashed into a similar box used at KFC for chicken and biscuits with flaps that tuck in not a cake box they used to preserve the integrity. The Price for a slice is $12.99 v then $6.75-9.75. The Taste - the triple berry cheesecake yesterday was chalky grainy, not sweet, and crumbled when struck with the fork. The foot traffic wasn't bad, however, this is my hometown and mom shared the neighborhood grumblings. I find it to still be cute and offer some small indoor and outdoor seating. First come first serve.

Yelp
"SLJ used to be our favorite bakery. At my first job in fashion right after college, my boss would get birthday cakes for everyone, and I have so many happy memories associated with those treats. I even ordered a huge baby shower cake for my best friend from here. When they closed abruptly, I was heartbroken--but thrilled to hear it reopened under new ownership. Unfortunately, it's just not the same. The iconic triple berry cake used to have beautiful moss-green vines, but now the color is a bright, artificial green. The cake itself is much sweeter than before, and we couldn't even finish it. Really disappointing.

Yelp
The flourless chocolate cake is rich, decadent and delicious! The delivery was quick and efficient.

Yelp
June 2024 | Santa Monica: During our Girls Spa Day, my friend & I stopped by the beautiful bakery, Sweet Lady Jane for delicious dessert to go! Oh my goodness, there were so many delicious looking treats to choose from; it took a while to decide! Dark Chocolate Chip Cherry Cookie $5.50: Yummy with every single bite! The cookie is thick, gooey, a large size and the added cherries had my taste buds dancing! I loved the combo, absolutely delicious! Note: I don't normally like dark chocolate, but this cookie was incredible and I highly recommend! Vanilla Cupcake $7: There were so many pretty decorated cupcakes to choose from & though I selected simple Vanilla, it was packed with flavor, which I enjoyed and devoured quickly once I got home! Haha! I almost ordered a slice of cake instead, as they are tempting, even at $12.99 a slice... maybe, and I did say maybe, next time... as they were absolutely beautiful! Customer Service: Top of the line and friendly! She took the time to show me several options, told me more details about several, even taking the glass cover off of the cupcakes and spinning the platform around, so that I could look at each one! They were so pretty, had to have one! Seating: Inside, as well as outside underneath vibrant, yellow umbrellas! Overall: Beautiful bakery, love the location & wonderful customer service with a smile! Yes, it's a bit pricey, but overall, worth it, for the items I ordered! I will be back!

Yelp
SLJ has a lot of selections and GF options! I wasn't a fan of the frosting, more whipped than buttercream but the cake itself was very flavorful. The service was amazing! Rosie was great and so helpful with my sisters and I. The shop is beautiful, clean and very organized! I will come back to try other goodies.

Yelp
Adulting is deciding you want cake for lunch and making it happen...right?!? But on a more serious note I love the triple berry cake from Sweet Lady Jane! It's perfectly fluffy and yummy and the fruit is always fresh and sweet. I've had it for special milestones throughout my life like birthdays and my college graduation. It's always just as good, every single time. When I heard that Sweet Lady Jane was closing permanently a couple months back I was devastated to say the least. Imagine my surprise when I was casually strolling up Montana Avenue a few days ago and it was still open. I was ecstatic and made a point to come back today. Come here to satisfy your sweet tooth or purchase a cake for a special occasion. You will not regret it :)

Yelp
Let me begin by saying that I gave this business 3 month to "make this situation right!" After months of communication on my part they have REFUSED to work with me! We reached out to this business for a custom wedding cake months before the wedding, we purchased a variety of slices of their cake selection and loved the Princess Cake. We requested it be made in all white and after weeks of not hearing back from them, I finally got a hold of the manager she told me that the cake could indeed be done in all white. The DAY before the wedding she said it could NOT be done so we were in a bind, she asked if there was another color we would accept (which we sent) which I did not understand as I own a "Sweet Business" and always have request for for different colors and have to start with a base "white" color, so why couldn't they do it "all white?" We ended up with two "Blood Red" cakes. Needless to say we were horrified! The best Sweet Lady Jane would do was refund us $60 on a $800 for the "color charge" which we didn't want in the first place! I had the cell number of their customer service person, every time I reached out she said she would get back to me which she never would. After much research on trying to locate the owner's email, I found that the business had reopened in March 2024 after being closed for years, so sad that they don't care about customer service!

Yelp
This was my first time trying this place. I read the reviews and it seems like quality has gone down based on recent reviews. One review in particular was spot on about the ham and cheese croissant. It's a massive croissant which is nice, but they literally put one tiny slice of ham in it. Overall it was tasty, but lacked in ham department. I got the princess cake for my mom's birthday. At $85 for a six inch cake, I had high expectations. I'd say it's not worth it. The cake is gorgeous and well decorated. But the taste and quality weren't there. The cake inside was a little dry. But where it touched the "imported" raspberry jam it was kind of mushy. Like all throughout just major inconsistency with texture. The flavors were good. I'm usually not a fan of marzipan, but the almond flavor went well with the raspberry and vanilla. Service was pretty nice and efficient. I did think it was odd they didn't mention storage/serving info like if it needed to be refrigerated and when to take it out before serving. So I had to call for this info after leaving. At the end of the day this place seems like mostly hype and the inflated prices do not match the lackluster quality of the cake. Do better new owners.

Yelp
Absolutely unforgettable cakes! I don't have money to burn, but when it comes to celebrating a birthday or holiday or wanting to share something special with friends and family, SLJ bakes the cakes my friends and I can't live without. Their triple berry cake just keeps getting better; one friend says the slice he ate this Friday was the best yet. For my birthday on 2.10.25, we celebrated with the Beverly, and my friend loved it so much he is still keeping his glass cake stand on his table. For me (chocolate lover), it was the best cake I've ever eaten, bar none. I could go on and on. The staff is charming; they bend over backwards to be helpful. Outside tables and a lovely location are delightful. Share a slice of unforgettable cake and take a leisurely walk along beautiful tree-lined streets and forget your troubles. Sound nice? IT IS!!!!

Yelp
The cupcakes are incredible and so intricately decorated. The sweet box is perfect if you want to try a little of some of each item that they have Los Angeles top bakeries . They did a decent job on making the items, but their delivery processes not the easiest.

Yelp
Parking can be quite a hassle since there's no parking lot. There are meters nearby. The cakes are super pricy but super worth it!!! It was the best cake I have ever had. It was the white cake with the fruits inside. The frosting is so delectable, you MUST try at least a slice if you're in the area. We got the smaller version of the cake, it was about $80. They also ran out of bags... The service could be better. We arrived about 30 minutes before closing, and they looked irritated that we showed up. Not to mention, answering our questions super vaguely.

E D.

Yelp
I used to always order the triple berry cake for my birthday, but when I got it a few years ago, I noticed a decline in taste and quality. That was likely before the ownership changed, and I decided to switch to Whole Foods cakes instead. A few days ago, I gave this place another shot and ordered a slice of red velvet cake. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations--it tasted like a cheap variation. That said, I have to give credit to their staff for being attentive and friendly.

L L.

Yelp
How unfortunate! Apparently new owners decided to cut corners and it shows! Your customers know the difference and you are not fooling us. We expect high quality. Period. Original owner used high quality ingredients to produce excellent baked goods. This crap is awful. This has happened to so many places on Montana, and they disappear. I am joining the many who will not patronize your business any longer.
google avatar

Lola C.

Yelp
Ahhh what a terrible disappointment! I got a cake yesterday for my son's birthday, the triple berry we usually get. It was inedible! $100 in the trash. You can't even cut a piece , it falls apart and tastes like an old sheet cake from Vons. And no it's not due to being natural and organic, Erewhon sells a version of this per slice all natural and organic and it's delicious. This was just awful. Even the little marshmallow ghosts were bad.
google avatar

Sue L.

Yelp
I will always pay homage to the original Sweet Lady Jane on Melrose (which basically served all the cake needs for the celeb crowd and LA power players, at least back in the day), but I also absolutely loved my (former) neighborhood SLJ for its convenience and easy accessibility on beloved Montana. It's all about the Triple Berry Cake. Always and forever in our memories.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
My husband and I went to Sweet Lady Jane to pick up dessert after dinner. When we arrived, the place was closed even though it should have been open based on their posted hours. The employees were inside starting to put away the items and had clearly decided to close early, ahead of the bakery's official closing time. They saw us outside and could not have cared less. 0/10 in customer service.
google avatar

Martina T.

Yelp
Visited Sweet lady Jane under new management owned by Julie Ngu. She also owns Pacific Bakery. The prices have increased tremendously with inflation. 6 inch triple berry slice is $12.99, 6 inches is $85, 9 inches is $120. The slices are hard to cut, very crumbly. A plastic cake cutter is now included. The box has evolved to a modern creme colored, simple but classy. The cake is good, not too overly sweet, frosting and cake was ok. Still not as good as the original sweet lady Jane of about 10 years ago. The quality went down with the previous owner. The cake is more of a statement piece, prized gift due to the name and history.
google avatar

Norbert K.

Yelp
Sorry I didn't finish my review before I heard the sad news: Sweet Lady Jane abruptly closed its doors on New Year's Eve after 35 years in business.

J L.

Yelp
Before the temporary closing of SLJ, I was a huge fan of their triple berry cake. I bought it for special occasions like family birthdays and everyone loved it. I was looking forward to enjoying a piece of cake after the reopening but was sorely disappointed. The cake bears no resemblance to the cake we enjoyed so much before. The cake consistency is very different - very crumbly and dry and it tastes worse than cake mix cakes. The frosting now tastes like it's made with seed oils rather than actual cream. And the berries inside the cake were very skimpy and not so fresh. I am definitely willing to pay a premium price for an excellent cake, but paying $12.99 for a very mediocre piece of cake is outrageous. Thank goodness Whole Foods got the message and went back to their original Chantilly berry cake recipe. Will stick with that for the time being.

Marissa T.

Yelp
I came from out of town and ordered a cake via telephone for my daughters birthday. I communicated mostly by email with someone at the bakery. The cake was $128 for a tiny 6" round. I was willing to pay it bc I thought it was going to be beautiful for that price. I was wrong, very wrong. The beach themed cake looked like a beach disaster. All of the "shells" that were supposed to be made of fondant or chocolate looked unrecognizable, were falling off the cake or otherwise terrible. I emailed the person I had been communicating with within 15 minutes of picking up the cake and never received a response. DO NOT USE THIS BAKERY IT IS A RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!

Carol V.

Yelp
Very disappointing. We have ordered pies and desserts from them over the years and have always been happy until now. We preorderd a strawberry rhubarb pie ($60) for Thanksgiving dinner. Aside from being expensive the pie was very underwhelming. The topping (not crust) became very pasty and soggy. The pie did not taste great. They asked us to send a picture so they could show the boss. Offered us a sandwich as compensation. Will not be patronizing this establishment any more. :-(
google avatar

Vicky N.

Yelp
Stopped by Monday morning to get a slice of the triple berry cake for breakfast for my goddaughter. Disappointed to pay full price ($13) for less than half a slice of cake. Even my godson (8) asked what happened to the cake. My SIL got a slice for my birthday a week prior and it was a full slice.

Yelp
This is an adorable shop! It is not the best or the most affordable, but it is an absolutely adorable experience. I had the Beverly cake and it was divine. The warm, creamy, decadent ganache atop fluffy yellow cake separated by thick chocolate buttercream really satisfies a cake craving. The macaroon was not the best I've had but it was tasty paired with a warm beverage. The texture of the cookies is immaculate. It is rare to come across well-made dessert shops, but the dessert here is solid. My slice of cake was $10, which is not a bad price for the quality, flavor, ambience, and adorable packaging. The service was friendly and kind. I would visit this shop to meet with others for the vibe of its sophisticated and darling interior and exterior. However, there are better spots for dessert in the city. Overall, I would recommend this shop as a quaint experience for a sweet treat.
google avatar

Ane V.

Yelp
It was my clients 85th birthday. The daughter ordered from this bakery thru door dash. The cake was heavenly. Smooth and moist. The sweetness's is just the right amount. The berries are very good and they didn't over power the taste. I would definitely come check this out in person and see what else they have.
google avatar

Thom P.

Yelp
The service was nice and staff was friendly. The croissants were well beyond their "eat-by" date. For these prices I would have expected a fresh croissant and not what we paid for!

Katie L.

Yelp
I have gotten the Tri Berry Cake every year for my birthday for the past 5 years and was so happy to hear SLJ was reopening after its abrupt closing. But unfortunately the quality with the new ownership is nowhere near what it was before. The cake is dry, the frosting is waxy and too sweet (not fluffy like it used to be) and totally just not worth the money. I don't really care if the owner keeps replying to reviews that "the recipe is the same" because clearly it isn't, or they need to change something because it's not working anymore. Hopefully they'll take this feedback seriously as longtime loyal customers are leaving. Unfortunately, I can't justify buying from here anymore. RIP!

Eloise P.

Yelp
Was very excited to visit SLJ during our trip to LA after having lived a block away from this bakery for many years and eating it almost daily. I was incredibly disappointed with our visit. There were very few cakes in the display and no princess cakes at all and what was there looked sad and underwhelming. Most of the cupcake icing looked like it had been bumped or wiped off, the cakes that were there were also poorly decorated with uneven icing and the pastry case was underwhelming with large, soggy looking pastries. We missed the pastry chef painstakingly decorating each cake in the window and wonder if their cakes are brought in from WeHo or somewhere else and damaged along the way? Regardless, we walked out without buying anything and my seven year son said he wanted ice cream down the street instead. Such a disappointing experience!

Customer 1.

Yelp
I am sad to say I finally tried this bakery but it did not live up to the hype. I got a cake made for my best friend's 30th birthday (which only happens once in your life). We chose the gluten free vanilla berry one since the woman on the phone recommended it. When we went to cut it yesterday, it was just completely falling apart. We couldn't even get a single slice to be whole... so when we were serving it, it was just plates of a pile of crumbs. It looked awful and we couldn't take photos for her to remember it. And the cake itself was extremely dry. For $85.00 ... I had high hopes it would be better. I will not be ordering again.
google avatar

Egg O.

Yelp
Under new ownership. $13/ cake slice. Cake slices are bigger than they were a few months back HOWEVER, the taste is extremely underwhelming. They must have kept the same recipes but changed the brand of certain ingredients to cheaper ones thinking nobody would notice (WRONG we do) to cut costs the quality is not what it used to be. Higher prices than before yet underwhelming. Give up already. This place needs to close. Not returning.

Ariana S.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! The whole reason we ordered a cake from them was for a specific phrase to be written on it. They sent a confirmation description promising that the phrase would be on the cake, but the actual cake we received did not have the phrase on it. The birthday girl was extremely disappointed! It ruined our night!!
google avatar

Philip R.

Yelp
Love this place! Glad it opened in the neighborhood! The treats are the best, and our favorite are the brownies!

Fatima S.

Yelp
I stopped by today, the first time after the reopening of the Montana store. The recipes have changed completely. I ordered a slice of the princess cake... was craving for that sweet lady Jane flavor, instead I could taste the uncooked cake powder. There was no fresh whipped cream, the almond flavor was tasteless and did not seem fresh. My stomach started to hurt.. I only had half of the slice... Whoever took over the brand name is doing great injustice to its original owners.
google avatar

Sunny B.

Yelp
Sad to hear they're closed forever. They had been a go to bakery for many of my friends for many years

Katia ..

Yelp
They changed their recipes for their triple berry cake. It now tastes dry, and the frosting tastes like it's made with (vegetable shortening). Will no longer buy.

Yelp
Came for a "sweet-stop" after breakfast with my fiancé, she wanted to try their Triple Berry cake. She said she heard good things about it. I went for moral support and to be her driver. Once we got there though I started to get hungry. I knew they were a bakery, but I didn't know they had food food. I was in the mood for a breakfast burrito, but was sad when the worker said they didn't have that on the menu. But surprisingly, the worker said "Actually, one second," and went into the kitchen. She came back out with a big smile and said they actually can make it for me if I still wanted it. I said "Heck yes!" and we waited at their outdoor seats. When the burrito came out it looked too good not to be on the menu. And the taste definitely matched the visuals. After I finished, I went back inside and thanked the worker who helped us. I don't know if these custom orders happen everyday here, but I definitely appreciated it. PS. My fiancé loved the cake and ate it before we could take a photo of it. She said we're definitely coming back.

Yelp
I love this place. I'm a dessert kinda guy and everything i have tried here so far is amazing. Plus they have a cafe now and there pancakes are fluffy and tasty. Had the pleasure to meet Gloria there gm and she is just delightful. What a wonderful spot in Santa Monica
google avatar

Yelp
They catered pies to our workplace. They "sniff in" at 3.5 stars... CHERRY LATTICE PIE: -- crust overdone and dark in color and very firm and hard to cut through -- filling pretty good but not great -- I prefer and adore a cherry crumb over this -- it was edible but flawed as presented RATING = B ALMOND PEAR TART: -- a little doughy but delicious -- ample delicious almond paste -- a very tasty option RATING = A

Yelp
I had the worst experience with Sweet Lady Jane for my wedding. I'm so upset with their customer service and cake. I ordered a double tier cake for my wedding day and it arrived with what it looked like as hair all over the cake. They said it was from the cardboard box that it was delivered in. Instead of replacing it immediately, they picked up the cake so I did not have any cake or dessert at my wedding. I'm extremely upset and disappointment in Sweet Lady Jane. I will never be going back to this company. They handled this situation horribly.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
We used to be fans of SLJ but prices now since reopening are outrageous. Went by to at least give them a try after they opened the shop again. It's just not worth it and the selection is limited. When another local walked by as we were having our coffees and a tart slice outside, I told how much things like cakes now cost, her response was "Get the fxxx out of here!" I don't see how they'll sustain the business. We won't be going back.

Dahlia S.

Yelp
Ever since Sweet Lady Jane's rebrand, the food and service have been severely lacking. Sweet Lady Jane used to be a warm, inviting, nostalgic bakery/cafe. In recent years it has been rendered cold and lifeless. The service interface is clunky, the wait is long and the food is no longer worth its high prices. Even the triple berry cake, the backbone of SLJ, is dry and uninspired. I was hoping this gem would recover after the pandemic, but it has become a shell of its former self.
google avatar

Sarni N.

Yelp
This place is great! Love their cakes. The Triple Berry Cake is definitely my favorite. The cake was airy, fluffy, and overall delicious. I especially loved that the cake wasn't overwhelmingly sweet; most of the sweetness came from the fresh berries themselves. The staff there is great! Always friendly and welcoming! They have a great selection of cakes, pies, cookies and treats. They take pre orders 48 hours in advance, highly recommended. You'll be glad you did!
google avatar

Glenn J.

Yelp
The world's best cheese and ham crossiant with lucious melted cheese and a large thick ham slice is no longer great. New owners changed it to cheese toasted at the top of the bread, now crispy, and 70% less ham.

The P.

Yelp
There is clearly a new pastry chef in the back because the coconut flan is nowhere close to the way SLJ used to make it before closing for a period of time. While the flavor is acceptable, the flan is stockier, higher and much more dense and consequently "dry" completely lacking any air bubbles and sugar syrup at the bottom. It is also missing the golden raisins completely! I think this might be a cost cutting action on SLJ's part. I will not be buying the flan again. Sadly.
google avatar

Arlene F.

Yelp
So disappointing. Have not been to SLJ in a really long time. Today I ordered the almond croissant and the cinnamon roll, they were both really dry and lacked their namesakes almond and cinnamon. They landed in the trash. Sad to say I won't be back.

Mandy M.

Yelp
The famous berry cake here has been a staple birthday cake for friends and family for years and years in my house We just returned to the store after it had been closed for a few months and taken over by new owners. They've literally doubled the price for the same cake. I'm sorry I'm not paying $100 for a 6 inch cake no matter how good it is.
google avatar

C C.

Yelp
Great sea salt brownie and bread. Also love their coffee and service at the Santa Monica location. Clean bathrooms and easy parking

Yelp
Unsure why the rating is so low. This is my favorite dessert shop in LA. Always have a great experience and each time I go back, I do my best to come here., My favorite: red velvet followed by triple berry cake. The team is always very attentive and the shops are always clean and organized. Thank you!

T A.

Yelp
I have ordered countless berries and customized cakes over the last 22 years.. and all have been terrific.. but since new ownership, we ordered the famous berry cake in May and I have to say, it doesn't taste the same.. cake was much sweeter, not in a pleasant way, and fruits and cake clustered together in chunks, not the smooth tasting we're used to before. And finally the birthday writing on top seemingly an afterthought. Just not as elegant and delicious tasting as before. I'm disappointed and will try one more time and hoping things taste the same as before..
