Where to Eat Crepes in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Marlen Alchinov and Aigerim Mambetova, the spouses and owners behind this cozy cafe and bakery in Ravenswood, bring a Central Asian lilt to Chicago’s crepe scene — to great effect. The couple immigrated in 2013 from Kyrgyzstan and their roots are evident throughout the menu, including among its selection of sweet and savory crepes. Standouts include halal ground beef crepes with rice, cherry tomatoes, greens, and sour cream; and “classic crepes” slathered with condensed milk and strawberry jam made on-site." - Naomi Waxman

My friend and I decided to have lunch at the restaurant on Saturday. We ordered Tom Yum soup, coffee, tea, and dessert. I really enjoyed the spicy flavor of the soup — the food was fresh and prepared quickly. For dessert, we had honey cake, which turned out to be perfectly sweet, soft, and fresh. The coffee was delicious. Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant, the place was clean, the restroom was well-maintained, and the staff was polite. There aren’t many seats, so I recommend making a reservation in advance or checking if there are available tables. They also offer takeout. All in all, I recommend this place and would happily come back

Love Sweet Moon! I frequent this place every few months and always enjoy the food and drinks here. They offer a mix of classic Soviet and Central Asian pastries, which are fresh and delicious, and breakfast and lunch options that are flavorful and well presented. Good portion sizes as well. The staff is also so friendly and kind. Great place to enjoy a meal with friends or just to enjoy some tea or coffee and do some work. I look forward to my next visit!

This café has amazing service! The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home. The desserts are absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. A perfect place to relax and enjoy a great treat. Highly recommend!

Google
Food and desserts are yummy, good selection of teas. Got honey cake and pistachio raspberry cake, both were delicious and burrata toast was highlight of the day lol. But honestly I really enjoyed that toast. Tea got cold (and a bit sour) fairly quick though, would be nice if there was an option to have it reheated or refilled. I don’t think there’s designated parking available, but there’s street parking and the bus stop is almost right in front. Accessible washroom and wi fi, AC was working👍🏼

Google
The best coffee in Chicago!!!! Very tasty and soft. The sausage rolls are also very nice. We will come back for more food. Thank you!! 🥰🥰

Google
They have RAF!!!! (Coffee) Good place to stop by a sweet cake (I guess a bit too sweet imo). The Raf coffee really brings back memories from the place it was created. Conveniently located close to the brown line. Service friendly and chil (they missed 2 items, but when asked, they acknowledged it and corrected pronto). Good spot to bring your kiddos.

Sweet Moon is honestly the cutest spot. No idea how they hire their team, but it’s gotta be based on pure vibes everyone’s so kind, funny, and just… real. They always greet me like, “Hey, the usual?” or you feelin’ breakfast today?” and it makes my day every time. My go to is the strawberry matcha w sparkling water not even on the menu, but they still make it 4me. I keep coming back for that drink, their insanely good breakfasts, and the kind of energy you just don’t find anywhere else in Chicago , promise y! The whole place has this light, such a great vibe. You can tell everything’s made with love from the way they pick their staff to how perfect their desserts are. Y definitely should try honey cake , and bounty cheesecake. Sweet Moon just hits different!!:>

I recently visited Sweet Moon Cafe, and it was an absolute delight! From the moment I stepped inside, the cozy and welcoming atmosphere immediately made me feel at home. The decor is charming, with soft lighting and comfortable seating, perfect for relaxing or catching up with friends. The real highlight, of course, was the food. Their selection of desserts is incredible, with a variety of unique treats that are both visually stunning and absolutely delicious. I tried their signature moon cakes and a matcha latte – both were perfection. The balance of sweetness was just right, and the flavors were rich without being overwhelming. The staff was friendly and attentive, offering great recommendations with a smile. You can tell they take pride in what they do, and it shows in every aspect of the experience. If you're a fan of quality desserts in a relaxed setting, Sweet Moon Cafe is a must-visit. I can't wait to come back and try more from their menu!

Yelp
Delicious food! Solyanka and Syrniky are top notch! The atmosphere is also great, very cosy and quiet place.

Yelp
My friend and I came here after a Friday morning workout at the local gym since it was recommended to us by another friend we were staying with while visiting for the weekend. On the outside, the shop is unsuspecting and quite discrete. On the inside, it's spacious with plenty of seating and a minimalist chic set up. The vibe was pretty tranquil and offered a good spot for people to study and do work. We decided to look into the pastries as our post-gym snacks, and ordered the following to share: - Garlic & cream cheese donut: FREAKIN DELICIOUS. This was by far the best of the three. Loved how the garlic flavor compliments but doesn't overwhelm the flavor and texture of the cream cheese. The texture was nice and airy, but also the pastry itself offered so much flavor for such a decent size. 5/5 for sure! - Sausage piroshky: Good, yet tasted like your typical pigs in a blanket pastry. 3/5 since it didn't really blow me away. - Pineapple coconut brioche: This one was a good balance - not too sweet but also the texture of the brioche was smooth. 4/5 since it did its job well! I will definitely return here if I visit the area again. The spot is lowkey but it accommodates for the possibility to work, reflect, and indulge!

Yelp
The food and drinks have been very good. They mostly serve breakfast foods (omelets, waffles, crepes, etc) so keep that mind. The portions aren't the biggest but the quality is good. I've gotten the mushroom omelet twice. I really like their desserts - they served my basque cheesecake with warm chocolate and it was soooo good. My only complaint is that seated is very limited and it takes a while for the food to come out.

Susan S.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. I had a mushroom omelette which was very good, it's a bit thin but tasty. The potatoes were very good too. Usually a salad that's on the side is often just okay but this one was fresh and delicious. My friend had a breakfast sandwich which she enjoyed. There isn't drip coffee so I had an Americano. I would have liked a 2nd cup with my dessert but wasn't going to spend more money on a coffee. The honey cake we split was soft and not too sweet, a perfect bit to end the meal. It was a bit chilly in there and there aren't many tables. I already recommended this place to a bunch of people.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while looking for brunch places on Yelp! I'm so glad we came here! The decor is whimsical and filled with warm wood, bold green chairs, and all the pretty plants. I also appreciated the fresh flowers at the table. A great date spot! The staff are really nice and patient. Salmon Croffle: I was expecting just a sandwich, but it surprisingly came with a full plate of fresh veg too! I really enjoyed the sweet tomatoes as a compliment to throw savory, bready bites of the croffle. Pistachio Latte: well balanced latte that I got with oak milk. Not too sweet- it was perfect.

Yelp
Happened to be walking by and thought I would check it out. Ended up buying so many things and they are all delicious! The triangle chicken pastry they have was phenomenal. I will go back for more of those for sure. Perfect seasoning and flavor. Also got an almond croissant, a slice of Napoleon cake, and a couple other pasties, but I don't remember the names. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Fabulous local breakfast and bakery. The honey cake is a must! the Eggs benedict and omelets hit the spot, but did I mention the honey cake?

Yelp
My goodness. Sweet Moon is not even a mile away from my home and I've never been to it before today. I must confess, there have been many restaurants that have flitted in and out of this and the space next door, so I don't even always know what might be here at any time. And I never seem to see people in the restaurants along here so I hesitate to get attached. But I hope that Sweet Moon bucks the trend! They've been here for two years and I'm keeping my fingers crossed they are here for many more. Their food is great. I met some friends here and their chai was really good, and if it is made from a concentrate I couldn't tell. It had a subtle flavor, but also didn't taste watered down like is often the case. They also have pastries and small bites as well. I got a sausage roll and mashed potato... thing (I don't know what it was called) and both were really good. Well, so was the potato! They also had a few free samples out so we tasted a raspberry donut and mango. The mango was ok but not my thing (maybe because mango isn't a fruit I generally choose; I'm fairly indifferent) but the raspberry was so good. It didn't taste like a sticky jelly the way most filled donuts do; this was more like a raspberry gel or cream or something Fuller flavor and more true to the fruit, in my opinion. Next time I'd buy a full sized raspberry donut. I can promise it won't be another two years before I stop in again. There's street paid parking if you don't live in the neighborhood, or it's about a block or two north of the Damen Brown Line.

Yelp
- Delicious passion fruit tea. - Tender cake - Inside cozy sofas and chairs - Great choice on the menu - Service staff is good - I recommend
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
I got their breakfast plate, which was super fresh and yummy. I also got an iced banana latte which was ok. The mango eclair's pastry was delicious but the filling inside was too heavy for the pastry. It's a bit more expensive than other brunch places I've tried but I think it's worth it. They also had the viral cookie croissant, that I didn't get, but if you're looking for it, they have it!

Yelp
Very cute Korean cafe with a wide assortment of savory breakfast/brunch items, drinks and coffee, and delicate pastries. I have only tried the quinoa salad and smoked salmon sandwich, and they are both solid and worth the price! They both had so much salmon in there. I loved the rich nutty flavor of the pistachio latte. I will have to come back to try their renowned honey cake. Love the vibe of this place! It is great for working/studying and the service is good.

Yelp
When I lived in Chicago, my friends and I loved to go to a Ukrainian restaurant because some of us are of Eastern European backgrounds and this food felt like home. Upon our recent visit, a friend recommended Sweet Moon and I was really excited for some Russian food. *Chicken cutlets - these were pretty good! *Lamb dish that I can't remember the name of, but it was delicious and had some pine nuts that added some nice texture and a good sauce *Syrniki - these were pretty good *Piroshki with potato - a good little bite to start the meal off! *Merengue roulette cake - this was my favorite of the cakes! *Honey Cake - really good traditional cake *Pistachio raspberry ice cream cake - also really good, and got better as it softened and got a little less frozen Overall, the food was really good and definitely a taste of home.

Yelp
Beautiful interior, cozy. Various desserts, pastries. Very tasty tea with passion fruit, mint and orange. Varied menu. Friendly and polite staff. Lots of tables, very comfortable chairs.

Yelp
Outstanding!!! Can I give 6 stars? Great, cozy cafe for one or many with outstanding unique food and great drinks. The portions are quite large for the plates but so worth getting to try lots of different things. Mushroom omelet was full of fresh veggies with a balsamic glaze on it. Potatoes, asparagus and some bread-- yum. And the salad was great however a bit dressed. Probably only critique is to have the dressing on the side. Breakfast plate has all the great things, meat, eggs, veggies, bread and cheese. Waffle has ice cream!!! Enough said! The little pancake things are a different texture, a bit grainy but mild flavor and with the fruit, super good. Pastries were great and service was wonderful. Cannot wait to come back!

Yelp
I saw Sweet Moon while on my way to another cafe and decided to give it a shot instead. They have plenty of seating and food options as well as coffees. I didn't look at the menu, but was immediately tempted by the baked items they had on display. The garlic donut with cream cheese was fantastic- melt in your mouth good. I could've eaten 5 more of them. They have plenty of seating and there are outlets if you need to charge your laptop while working. It didn't have a cafe vibe but I would still come back.

Farisa M.

Yelp
We have been to sweet moon several times. The food has always been good, but we really go back for the teas, which we find are great. This review is not about the food, but the customer service. We walked in today and the cafe was packed and people were waiting to order. Since we knew that we were going to be having our food there, my kids found a table and sat down while I waited in line to order. This cafe is not a sit down restaurant where the orders are taken tableside, we have always seen it be first come first serve. As I waited to order a couple in front of us started to complain about the tables are being taken instead of trying to get a table. The server came to the table my kids were at and asked how many we were and made them get up and leave because there was a bigger party in front of us. There were three of us, and two (melanin challenged) people in their party. The table was given to them. I found the situation very frustrating since we got to the table first to ensure that we could actually have our food for dining in and not getting our food and then looking around for a place to sit. Super rude and disorganized space.

Yelp
Sweet moon is a cute little cafe spot on Lawrence. There's street parking, they offer pre order on their website which if you're picking up food other than pastries I would recommend doing the pre-order so you won't have to wait for your order to be ready. You walk up to the counter to order/pay and they bring your order out. The seating area is super cute if you decide to dine in. It's picture friendly but if you're in a group they have limited seating. I tried the salmon sandwich it's got a strong dill flavor and cream cheese but over all a light sandwich. The pistachio raspberry cake is the best thing we tried and second is the flat croissant. I was surprised by the honey cake I've never had one before and it won't be the last time. The pain au chocolate is super flakey and had a good amount of chocolate. I want to try some of the drinks next time we visit. They have a cute flower wall which has now become a typical for cafes. I can see myself bringing my friends here or a brunch date with the hubby.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
It's not only a cafe with good desserts, it's a variety of light bites and lunch. Sweet moon offers a variety of options. It has a casual feel that you order up front and they bring it to you at the table. The chairs are really comfy and lux. We sampled a few desserts we picked in the window, as well as a few savory bites. They were all delicious. The fruit teas were infused with actual chunks of fruit and whole spices.
google avatar

Alex Anne M.

Yelp
The plating at Sweet Moon is so exquisite that I imagine a chef using a pair of tweezers to meticulously place each item to be displayed on the dish. My mother and I talk for at least two minutes about the layout and design of the plated food before diving in and being even more amazed by the flavor combinations. My favorite menu item is the Merengue Roulette, a gluten-free merengue with mascarpone pistachio cream, raspberry jam, baked almond, and whole pistachios. For such well-crafted and well-balanced dishes, the wait time is not long, usually not exceeding 10 minutes. Although the place is typically always filled with people all customers are respectful of the noise level and it is quiet and serene. Great place to work or catch up with a friend!

Yelp
Great food! Love the setting. Hard to choose from the pastries. The breakfast was really good.

Yelp
Don't sleep on Sweet Moon! For the looongest time I would walk past here and lament that they were never open when I was in the neighborhood. And then they expanded their hours sometime not too long ago! Hurrah! I had also confused this place with Sugar Moon. No, this is not the place with the cookies and big pastry assortment (their pastries do seem fine though). The honey cake ($6) I tried was REALLY good and everything I dreamed it would be. Graham crackery and creamy and rich and not too sweet. It's also beautiful and something I could never pull off in a million years. I also tried the cappuccino which was solid, and their eggs Benedict, which was very unique. Instead of an English muffin you get waffles, and it includes smoked salmon, avocado, and a nice side of potatoes ($17). Big portions, too. Alas, if only I lived closer. The interior is really nice and roomy, too, and a good place for working/studying. Service is casual and you pay up front, and there's a self-serve water station in the back. Overall highly recommend for their unique menu and good food, and will definitely be back if I'm in the area! Especially for that honey cake.

Aaron S.

Yelp
Came in with the family on Christmas Day since most places were closed. We were pleasantly surprised by how good everything was, such a yummy place and we will definitely be back. Really pretty presentation too!!!
google avatar

Tomiris A.

Yelp
A very sweet and cozy place for breakfast and tea. This is my second time here. We had a passion fruit tea, tom yum soup and Benedict eggs. It was very filling and delicious! The tom yum soup was spicy and hearty. The huge portion of Benedict eggs with salmon, baby potatoes, spinach, poached eggs and a gluten-free waffle is a go to breakfast choice for me.

Yelp

Yelp
Really great place to grab a bite to eat. I don't remember what I ate but darn was it delicious. Nice selection in the bakery, good drinks, and super cute interior!

Yelp
Excellent food. Bakery & pastry offerings are impressive. Unique find for the neighborhood. I will return.

Yelp
My family and I had a wonderful breakfast experience at Sweet Moon. The standout service made us feel exceptionally welcomed, and even my dad, usually critical about non-traditional foods, was impressed and eager to return. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality is undeniable, offering a sense of luxury worth every penny. Don't miss out on their pastries to go - a delightful treat! Highly recommend Sweet Moon for a top-notch unpretentious breakfast experience.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Sweet Moon is hands down the best spot for breakfast in Chicago! The syrniki was delicious, and the coffee was rich and flavorful. The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is super friendly. Perfect place to start your day--I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
Such a cute place! Sweets on display look so good, but when you order to eat there, they make the sweet thing look even better - fresh fruit and chocolate drizzle - before bringing it to your table (as pictured). Friendly staff to boot!

Margo M.

Yelp
They bring food very fast, everything is delicious. Stuff are very friendly and the have best desserts!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! What a hidden gem. The food is fantastic! This is definitely my new favorite brunch spot.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Found it randomly one day and ate there with wife and kids 4 times over the next two weeks. Best brunch, best omelette, best chill and relaxing vibe in the whole city. Get the Shrimp Omelette and/or a slice of the Honey Cake. I think my eyes rolled back the first time they were so good.
google avatar

KT O.

Yelp
Such a great vibe. If I lived in the area, I would work out of here and enjoy the delicious food. It's decorated in a calming way. Chill music at a low level. The food: I had a sausage roll. So good. The roll part was perfect and the sausage was great. I also enjoyed a DELICIOUS delicate meringue dessert. I'll be back even though I don't live in the area.
google avatar

Luke L.

Yelp
I had the moon cake and a pistachio latte. This place is worth going to and I knew it would be amazing just looking at the dessert display. The honey cake is super impressive as are all of the desserts and the pistachio latte is not as green as I was expecting it was more of a light brown but the flavor is so unique and the more you drink it you can taste the pistachio flavor but in a good way. It's why I came.
google avatar

Whitney N.

Yelp
A newer cafe that garnered a lot of positive reviews right away. Instagram worthy vibes, food is immaculate, and drinks are refreshing. I bring my laptop to work and always spend over $20 here because I can't resist the selections.
google avatar

Kathryn Y.

Yelp
Sweet Moon is a sweet spot! Came here with a girlfriend on a Friday lunch hour. Super quiet inside when we got there, plenty of room to sit. I had the salmon bagel sandwich, and if you love lox, it will not disappoint imo! Yummy looking pastries. I'll be back to try some more.
google avatar

Kawla Jane B.

Yelp
My boyfriend brought me here due to a family recommendation. I got the crème brûlée cheesecake while he got the milk cake and it was both so good! They were both so creamy and filling. We didn't get to try their drinks because we just bought Starbucks so we will definitely coming back. It's a street parking so be prepared to look for a spot and pay. There were also no wait and we got a table to sit right away. Love the ambiance too, very chill vibe. I can't wait to try other things from them.
google avatar

Anjum G.

Yelp
Everything was so good! The breakfast was different then any other place in Chicago. Such a cute spot too. We got tons of things out of which the mini pancakes with mango sauce and the kabobs stood out. The pistachio latte was also one of the best I've had! Not too mention it's halal
google avatar

Nor A.

Yelp
My favorite cafe in the city. I love the food, the coffee, pastries, and the customer service. I hope they keep this wonderful place up and expand.

Derek H.

Yelp
Sweet Moon has good food but the people who run it are horrible and discriminatory toward customers. I've spent hundreds of dollars and hours of my life in their restaurant and the way they treat certain customers is unfair and hateful. If they don't like your appearance / race / religious garb, they will make you wait for 45 minutes for your food. I've seen them do this to certain people dozens of times, no matter if the place is busy or not. They'll be insanely rude to you and make you wait forever. This is in effort to make sure you never come back, because they don't want someone like you in their restaurant. Well, Sweet Moon. You got what you wanted. I will never come back, and would advise any religious person and any Latino person to avoid this place unless you're in the mood to be treated like less than human.
google avatar

Arlette R.

Yelp
Husband baby and I went early Sunday for the opportunity to get out of the house and have food outside. After we placed our ordered, we sat down and unfortunately waited for 45 minutes for a sandwich and crepes. We didn't even order beverages. We got tired of waiting as the baby started to get angry and decided to ask for the order to go. We used to rely on Sweet Moon as a place were us and other parents could take a break and breath. I understand there could be issues in the kitchen. Perhaps low staff. If this is the case, they should communicate this to all customers and notify them of the delays. After we got our food to go with ZERO APOLOGY, I got home and checked the ordered and was livid. I paid $4 for a handful of potatos. What!? Are you telling me this is an order? I had the potato's before and I had 3 times the portion they gave us. This place is going down hill. DO BETTER!
google avatar

Yaroslav S.

Yelp
Even though it's they call themselves "cafe, bakery", on my opinion it's a hidden gem, it's a restaurant with cafe prices. They have such a solid and big menu, rly good dishes. Caesar was the best in my life, as well as cake Ambiance of the place is very quite, chill and stylish. I feel so relaxed, like at home, every time I'm there. And you may meet the owners almost every day there, make sure you catch them and have a small talk, those guys are incredibly friendly and with interesting background!

Yelp
If you are looking for the best place for breakfast, Sweet moon café is the best choice. It has a great vibe, a very clean cafe and most importantly it has amazing breakfasts. The food here is very tasty and very beautifully served, which is rare to find even in expensive restaurants in Chicago. The desserts here are the most delicious, especially honey cake!

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Incredible little place! Bigger than it looks with beautiful seating and ambiance. Great coffee and food as well! The creampuffs are to DIE FOR-- incredible pastry and filling. The people who work here are the kindest souls and so so sweet. I came to study with a friend and we stayed for several hours, and the man at the front refilled our lattes free of charge and gave us complimentary cream puffs and kind words!! HIGHLY RECCOMEND!

Evelyn K.

Yelp
Such a nice coffee shop. All the pastries we tried were amazing, pistachio latte was great, and the whole place just has a nice vibe (drinks/food came on real plates, seating is high quality, etc)
