The Best Croissants In Chicago

"The ridges on this Roscoe Village bakery’s croissants look like the shiny mountain range we wish we had in our giant cornfield of a state. And those caramelized grooves play an important role in texture, starting with the crispy crumble at first bite, followed by a nice airiness. The smooth, laminated layers are like thin stacks of warm blankets freshly plucked from the dryer—when you finally remember to use fabric softener—and there’s a pleasant hint of nuttiness from the whole wheat flour." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen

Sweet Rabbit Bakery - Review - Roscoe Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Through its big windows, Sweet Rabbit looks like a small neighborhood coffee shop with a few tables and an espresso machine. But once you see all of the trays lined with pastries, it’s clear this Roscoe Village spot is a full-fledged bakery. They have excellent whole wheat butter croissants, plus more unique pastries like a rye ham and cheese croissant with a generous sprinkling of everything bagel seasoning. Sweet Rabbit is a popular morning rush spot for people needing a quick bite and caffeine to-go, so it’s easy to grab a seat for you and your creamy ube ho ho." - John Ringor

Sweet Rabbit truly feels like one of the most underrated bakeries in the area. I don’t know how this place hasn’t gotten more popular! Their pastries and bread always are absolutely amazing. I plan my weeks around getting baked bread here (especially the miso bread). And their pastries are out of this world! I especially love the Hunny Bunny (truly melts in your mouth) and the Morning Cardio croissant (my go-to, the filling is so yummy). Lastly, their sandwiches are perfect to take to-go, especially to grab on the way to the lake. You truly can’t go wrong with any of their baked goods!

Coffee: okay Tea: good Pastries/bread: excellent Customer service: if you get the guy with dark hair and tattoos then 1/10. He seems perpetually grumpy and looks offended every time a customer walks in the door. If you get the older gentleman then 10/10 - he’s super sweet and adorable. Overall: quick service and good product

We had the carrot cake and coconut ube pie for Easter dessert. They were outstanding! The carrot cake was a perfect balance of tasty, but light cake and creamy frosting. One really tasted the ingredients instead of being overwhelmed by sugar. I've never had anything like the coconut ube pie. It was a thin layer of chocolate with a dollop of cream with coconut in it. It was perfect. I highly recommend this bakery. Its owner is quite talented. I've heard the sandwiches are terrific too!

Google
Their bakery goods are better than their drinks. What stole the show for me was actually their milk bread they sell. I don't currently have a picture, but it was phenomenal. Besides that the honey bun was an absolute delight knowing the frosting was honey flavor based. For a shop that's been around roughly a year, they're doing a great job!

Google
Loved it so much we are going back the next day for more. Chocolate Croissant, passionfruit Pavlova, and sausage egg and cheese sandwich. Everything was delicious, exactly what we were hoping for. Tomorrow we are going back for more and to get a fresh loaf of bread, that they slice! This was a gem

I stopped by Sweet Rabbit for a quick afternoon snack a few days ago and while the pastries are awesome I think the customer experience can be improved. There is ample seating that actually looks cozy, but the restaurant is a little awkward to navigate. There's no clear spot to stand in line or wait for drinks and the staff isn't around or friendly enough to help. I came in around Noon and there was no one nearby the till, which did give me time to peruse the case, but I didn't see any menu nearby or prices so I just sort of picked what looked good. Drinks are listed small and far away from where the register is so it's kind of hard to piece together your order. When someone did come out from the back to take my order, they said probably less than 2 words to me, but did quickly grab my pastries and hand me a drink. A little more friendliness could go a long way here in retaining repeat customers. All the minor complaints aside, I am SO happy to have a local bakery and coffee shop in the area and they fill a much needed void for us south of the main Roscoe Village strip. The pastries are to die for and I can't wait to try more!

Google
Definitely worth the wait for this bakery to open! Their house sourdough is the best I’ve ever had. Crispy and crunchy crust with a soft and slightly chewy inside. Add some butter and you will be in utter bliss- Warning…you might end up eating the whole in one sitting ;) Their sweet bakery items are also of superb quality and taste. Everything we’ve tried has been fantastic. They also have quality local- Metropolis. The staff is also wonderful and very helpful. The proof is in their products. I hope this place is around to bake many more loaves for years to come !

Google
Really delicious bread—the miso rye is excellent! I also enjoyed every single pastry I’ve tried here.

Yelp
Amazing selection of pastries and breads. Good coffee and space inside with lots of seating. Great spot to order a bunch of pastries to go, I think.

Yelp
Cute and minimalist cafe with just the right amount of bakery options. I got the ham and cheese croissant and they were nice enough to toast it.

Yelp
Went here after a beauty appointment across the street. The place is cute. I had the almond croissant, which was amazing, but my chai latte was okay. Would definitely come back so I could try their ube flavored ho ho.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the pastries here. I just happened to stumble upon it while I was getting my puppy groomed. The hunny bunny is just a cinnamon roll with honey glaze on it, it was good but nothing overly special. The two croissants were awesome. I especially loved the chocolate almond croissant. I'm generally not a big fan of chocolate and avoid it, but I loved it here. I ended up eating the entire pastry. The pistachio croissant was also pretty good, but I got a somewhat orangey taste from it. The cafe has a nice little vibe and lets you see back into the bakery which is cool. The staff were also very welcoming and it was clear they know all their regulars well! The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars and not 5 is because of the price. These three pastries together were almost $20 which is very expensive. I would definitely come back here, but likely as a treat and not too often due to the price.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by here on a Sunday morning around 10:30am. Sweet Rabbit Bakery had a cute interior and wasn't too crowded. We ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches with the sausage ($9 per). Service was friendly and quick! We both really enjoyed the sandwiches!! The bread was light and fresh, and the sausage was juicy and delicious. The thing that really put it over the edge was the Chili Crunch Pimento Cheese - it tied everything together and gave it that "it" factor. Overall we were really happy with the food and will be back! What a great addition to the neighborhood. I'll also have to try their coffee the next time we come!

Yelp
I was skeptical about going to this bakery because the area didn't seem as bustling on a Saturday morning, but I was very impressed. We tried the chocolate almond croissant, pistachio croissant, and honey bun. All the pastries were very yummy! I think the chocolate almond croissant had the perfect amount of filling, but the pistachio one should've had more filling :( My only other complaint is that the prices for pastries are a tad bit pricey (about $5 and up). Other than that, I think this is a great spot! The bread loaves look awesome too!

Yelp
I don't know that I would eat-in, but this is a very good option to grab a coffee or tea. The iced green tea was delicious. The biodegradable straw is a bonus. The treats all look fantastic but I opted for the carrot cake. The gluten free options were tempting. The carrot cake was just what I needed. I could've shared it, enough for 2 people if you just want a couple bites. It's clean, the staff were nice, and quick easy service.

Yelp
Sweet Rabbit Bakery is the definition of a good morning. As we watched the pastries being made in the back while ordering them in the front, we were blown away to receiver pastries that even looked better than the ones on display. A great vibe overall and I will most definitely be back early enough to order that Miso Rye loaf! Service was great and they had very kind people at the front. Also pet friendly and the coffee is fantastic (best dirty chai I've tasted). 9.8/10

Yelp
It's 9 AM on a Wed morning & already the ube ho ho roll and ham & cheese croissant are sold out. Good sign for a new bakery! To the dismay of customers lined up behind me, I took my leisurely time studying the unique & traditional baked good offerings in the Pastry case. The soft-spoken and cordial owner, Andrew, patiently answered my questions about his intriguing creations. Ultimately I selected a rich, flaky kouign-amann laced with black sesame and Morning Cardi-o, a sweet cruffin dusted with cardamom and orange zest sugar. Couldn't leave without a buttery, pillow loaf of Japanese milk bread &iced matcha with oat milk was perfectly creamy with the right hint of sweetness. I can't wait to return and try the ube offering or the hunny bunny! Come out and support this *sweet* neighborhood bakery!

Yelp
New bakery at corner of Belmont/ Leavitt in what used to be a Starbucks. Walking in, it's very modern with some seating, glass pastry cases & espresso machine. Nice pastry menu consisting of croissants, kouign-amanns, cinnamon rolls & even a baklava bearclaw!! They also have muffins, cookies, brownies, etc. Bread seems to be the focus here and they have many varieties which vary each day, they said. House Sourdough made with Turkey Red Wheat! Stopped in earlier to try a few things and they were very good; they seem to do slight variances to traditional pastries to enhance flavors. Awesome Cinnamon Roll called a "Hunny Bunny" with a honey/ vanilla glaze as well as a very good Banana Muffin. Cant wait to go back and try some of their bread! Prices average/ give them a shot! talk later

Yelp
What a delight to visit Sweet Rabbit Bakery! Andrew Cheng has built and incredible bakery with some of the most delicious breads and pastries I have ever tried. The Buckwheat Kouign-Amann is a must have. Flaky, nutty buckwheat plays so well against the black sesame paste. The miso rye bread is the perfect texture - crispy on the outside with a delightfully chewy center. A must try!

Elisa T.

Yelp
THE BEST bread, pastries, and cookies that are truly inspired!!! For breads, the miso rye is deliciously earthy yet light and the seeded bread is chock full of a yummy seed variety. For pastries, I loved the rich flavors and fluffy textures that did not feel heavy: buckwheat with a slightly chewy black sesame topping, refreshing cardamom ginger and light orange zest, a generous decadent slab of chocolate in the flaky chocolate croissant. (I already loved the regular croissant but a foodie friend and I agree this chocolate croissant is the best ever.) For the chocolate cookies, they are HUGE and have the right mix of crispy outside and chewy inside. Service and ambience was perfect as my friend and I enjoyed our oat milk lattes at one of the tables against a wall of cheery paintings. Andrew the owner/baker and his staff thoughtfully helped me pick out what to try at the bakery and what would keep for my flight home (a bag of housemade granola too!). The Sweet Rabbit icon is so cute and I got trucker hats and t-shirts to give away with the bakery goods. The hats and t-shirts are on a stand in the hallway to the 2 clean, accessible bathrooms. I was staying in downtown Chicago's Marriott and it was a quick 15 minute ride in the morning. It was definitely worth it to try and buy something unique and delicious to bring home and give away. My small carryon suitcase fit a paper bag of the round bread loaf, a dozen pastries/cookies, the granola, and the hats/t-shirt. The pastries and cookies didn't crumble or squash after I came back home and took them out of the suitcase. Other fun facts: Another friend who lives in Chicago had gone 5 times in one month alone, just a couple months after Sweet Rabbit Bakery had opened, and she ended up ordering $100 of pastries to give away. Sweet Rabbit Bakery made one of Chicago's Hot 10 restaurant lists for a reason! I love the fact that this local bakery, which uses locally sourced ingredients that really elevate the quality and taste, used to be a Starbucks location that left the neighborhood. I'm telling everyone they MUST TRY Sweet Rabbit Bakery whether they live in or visit Chicago! The website allows you to order for pickup or delivery. I'm bringing a bigger carryon suitcase next time!

Yelp
My regular coffee stop during a stroller walk with the baby. Such a cute little neighborhood spot to get a coffee and a pastry. Warm, welcoming, friendly and accommodating staff. Simple, modern and cozy seating inside. Love that they have a dog friendly somewhat sun-shaded outdoor patio in the back. Been there now a handful of times and absolutely love their cold brew and have tried several pastries and all were fresh and delicious. Welcome to the neighborhood. We needed a coffee spot right where you are!

Yelp
Sweet Rabbit Bakery and all its staff are delightful! My wife and I had been eagerly stalking their instagram over the last year as they worked through construction and permitting until their opening and we have been blown away. All of their pastry goods are impeccable (personal favs are the Cardi-o, Ham & Swiss Croissant, the Banana Muffins, and all of their Milk Bread variants) and they also do fantastic loaves of bread. They've also opened up their patio with some seating, which makes for a lovely little space to enjoy a baked good and coffee during a morning walk. The whole staff is really lovely and I've been impressed as how quickly they seem to have hit their groove. Super excited to have Sweet Rabbit in the neighborhood! I highly recommend stopping by and grabbing something delicious. You won't be disappointed. :)

Yelp
One of the best bakeries in the city. Incredible bread. Wide selection of pastries. Great breakfast sandwiches.

Yelp
We visited this quaint neighborhood bakery on a quick trip to Chicago. The pastries were delicious and unique!! In fact we visited both days we were in Chicago, and my only regret was I didn't buy more to take home. Service was great and we loved talking to the employees and the owner .

Yelp
Second time here and wowza! I tried the savory danish pea, ricotta (which I'm not the biggest fan), hint of orange and I think it had white pepper on top. I might have missed an ingredient but who cares it was just so yummy. I wasn't going to get but so glad I did it was a taste of heaven in my mouth so good! I also bought English muffins this time can't wait to try, carrot cake and lemon danish. Staff so nice. If they keep this up will be in my top 5 bakeries in Chicago. This is a must everybody.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful bakery with delicious baked items. Such a hidden gem in our neighborhood

Yelp
Awesome baked goods. The milk bread smelled delicious til the last bite. Look forward to going back and trying the unusual offerings
