Nine Excellent Charlestown Restaurants That Deliver

"Sweet Rice, which serves a mix of Thai and Japanese food, is currently delivering and offering takeout from both locations (Charlestown and Jamaica Plain). Can’t decide whether you’re in the mood for a sushi boat or khao soi? No problem; Sweet Rice has both. Order: Official Site" - Terrence Doyle

Google
Both food and service are great. We went there past lunch time, therefore it was not busy. It is a clean place and the lady was very welcoming and attentive. The Pad Thai is top 3 in Boston so far, and you can request to make it spicy. The noodle is authentic and delicious. Will go back to try other dishes. Highly recommended.

Google
You can tell a lot about a Thai restaurant if they can do authentic Thai regional food and have it be similar to being in Thailand 🇹🇭. Khao Soi is one of my favorite Northern Thai dishes and Sweet rice does a fantastic one! I’ll definitely be back to try more things on the menu cause they nailed one of my favorites

Yojairy Jaime

Google
I love Sweet Rice! Both locations have had amazing food and the service was quick. Tried their salmon nigiri and it was refreshing. Their thai tea is superb.

Google
Such an amazing surprise! Delicious food, we'll become customers, no doubt!!

Google
Fantastic drunken noodles, but just alright chicken satay. The drunken noodles were full of flavor and had fresh vegetables. Note: the spice level is an Asian spice level—I got spicy 3, and it packed a punch. I took off 1 star because the chicken satay was just average: dry, lacking flavor, and not pairing well with the peanut sauce. Additionally, the staff were rude. While waiting for my food, I observed multiple encounters where staff flippantly told customers their food wasn’t ready. I also requested utensils in the bag but didn’t receive any. Overall, I would come back for their drunken noodles and would get spicy 2 next time.

Ordered from Grubhub almost $100 later I had oily agedashi tofu and really tough seaweed. I was travelling for work and thought that close to the sea meant sushi was safe. Deep fried ice cream was melted

Google
Thai was a little diluted, calamari was good!, pad thai taste great, drunken noodle is fair, berry crab rangoon was effin’ good!, mango sticky rice is fair and crispy chicken basil is not that amazing for me. Our server was nice and proactive. Table spacing is wide. Bathroom is clean and smells good. I think people like it here as there are alot of takeout orders waiting. No parking space, so you got to roam around if the street parking is full. Accepts credit/debit. High chair available.

Google
Rangoons, Sushi and Pad Thai were great. Lemongrass chicken was unfortunately not very good. Dining in can be kind of annoying as they do a ton of takeout and there’s people always standing around you. But if you can get into the other dining area it’s much better. I recommend ordering from here for sure.

Yelp
The mango rice dessert was delicious. But they didn't wait till dessert time to give it to us. They just kind of threw everything out as it was ready. My favorite was the Thai pancake. It was my first time tasting something like that and it was delicious. Very hot and fresh. The mango duck curry was pretty watery. It didn't feel like they simmered it enough. I like my curry nice and creamy. They also forgot to give us our dragon roll. We had to remind them after eating half of our food. And then they put the order in.

Yelp
Sweet Rice is my absolute FAVORITE restaurant in Jamaica Plain, having lived in JP for several years. I always get their Pad Thai with Chicken. I honestly haven't eaten a pad thai from another city or state that I've enjoyed as much as Sweet Rice's. I also have to drink a Thai Iced Tea every time I visit. Yum! Sweet Rice is never so busy that you cant get a table quickly, though they can get quite bustling on some evenings. The food comes out quickly, which is great when I arrive feeling ravenous! It's never too loud inside that I can't have a nice conversation someone.

Yelp
The worst experience at a Thai place ever. I was visiting Boston, and stopped by here because we were hungry and in a rush. There were no signs anywhere claiming the restaurant closes at 3 pm, but we came in at 2. The server should've just refused us service so this whole mess couldve been avoided. She sat us down, and proceeded to rush us. She gave attitude when we asked for straws for our water. She brought the bill out at the same time as the food and asked us to pay right away. We didn't write a tip on the receipt because we were going to give cash. She then took the receipt and said "NO TIP? i'm working on my break and you guys give me nothing???" We were astonished. We have never ever been asked that, especially because we DID have the intention to tip. She was so so rude and made us hand over the cash tip immediately so she could go to the bank before it closed that day. -1000/10 service: i would never ever come back. (the server is asian and bigger in size, wears a bun)

Yelp
Got takeout from here this past weekend. For appetizers I got a Thai pancake. It came pretty thick which I was not expecting but it tasted really good. It came with a sweet ginger sauce which paired nicely with the umami flavor. I got the drunken noodles for my main. It had a little bit of a kick which was nice and the vegetables were the perfect amount of crunch for texture. The chicken was a little dry and I do wish it had a little bit of sweetness. Overall, it was a good meal

Yelp
It is very groovy to have this restaurant close to Old Stinky"s plush, but not overly ostentatious condo. It was very hot today so Stinky did not even want to go out, not even for a smoke. So he grabbed his MyPad and ordered up some Thai. Tried the Tropical Noodles and Vegetable Spring Rolls. He probably should not have gotten the white rice since he did not expect the main dish to be so noodle heavy. Oh well. The Spring Rolls are always wicked pissah! So crisp and tasty. The noodles were quite tasty and had Chicken, veggies and other groovy stuff. It had quite a zing to it, which is educational for further orders, since Stinky ticked off only 1 star out of 5 for spiciness. He can only imagine what the 5 is like. At his advanced age and unpredictable Gastric System, it is best not to go spicy for reasons the old dude will not go into at this time, but let's just say he ain't named Stinky for nuthin'. Portion of main dish was really large as usual for this place. He could eat not quite half, so that leaves some left for Stinky's pie hole tomorrow. He has ordered from Sweet Rice many times and it's his fave Thai restaurant. Never disappoints the old dude.

Yelp
I've done carry out from Sweet Rice twice and had different experiences! The first time was sort of disappointing. The second time we stuck to sushi and miso soup and it was so delicious!! Absolutely loved it. I'll definitely try Sweet Rice again.

Yelp
I ordered takeout via UberEats from here and overall was satisfied with my order. When I got my food, it was still very hot! I took a chance and tried out the blueberry crab rangoons- very delicious and the flavors worked really well together. The spicy tuna roll was decent, nothing special. I was saddened to see that any sort of sauce for most dishes were considered a $1 add-on. The pad thai was a little bland but the spice level was definitely there. Overall I would order again if i'm in the mood!

Yelp
Pad thai was incredible!!! Best I have had in the area since moving to Boston in 2021.

Yelp
I frequently eat at Sweet Rice and love it. The food is exceptional, fairly priced and everyone that works at the restaurant is very nice!

Yelp
Nice place to stop into for some sushi or Thai food. Their salmon and tuna is very fresh and tasty, so I usually don't stray from having those, but the fried rice and dumplings are great too. They also have different sizes sushi boats which are cool to try! The place itself is usually pretty quiet and they have a cute setup, but the service could be improved. I have found the servers to be a bit cold and short. For takeout - they seem to have a very successful takeout process. Every time I am in I can see bags lined up and ready to go!

Emily C.

Yelp
They serve UNRIPE mangos in your mango sticky rice... not happy that this has happened 2x, I was hoping this would just be a one time thing where the mango was unripe but they clearly do not care about the quality of the food.

Chelsea H.

Yelp
Whether it's delivery or dine-in, I've never had a bad meal from Sweet Rice. Ironically my favorites are the fried tofu and Brussels sprouts from the appetizers, but the red curry (chicken), drunken noodles, and pad c-u are all top choices. I think most things can be made vegetarian, which was great news for me. Table mates at the last dine-in raved over the hamachi collar, crab rangoons, and garlic salmon. Excellent service and a very laid back but modern atmosphere.

Yelp
Location matters a lot!! This Sweet Rice is so much better than the one in JP. Years ago, I probably wouldn't have said that. But, this one is good. The food is always fresh. The service is always prompt but not necessarily friendly. There is a chilling politeness but doesn't distract too much from the experience. The food is hot and tasty.

Yelp
The restaurant is really cute, I ordered the drunken noodles and spicy tuna roll, it was pretty good. The prices are decent and it's also a great location in Charlestown
google avatar

Yelp
Decent delivery option for Thai food in Boston. The food was freshly prepared and arrived warm. The pad thai was alright but the beef was a bit overcooked.
google avatar

Yelp
Not Sweet Green.. This is cute little restaurant on Main Street in Charlestown. Menu has many items designated as lunch items and priced lower although I do not know when lunch ends but that's where we ended up. I'm sure glad we did, the tempura was very good. My tofu vegetable dish was delicious. Fresh and came w rice. They offer Thai, sushi and some Chinese? It was two thumbs up and grabbed some menus to bring back to my apartment building and leave in the lobby . All right.

Kya W.

Yelp
The food here is amazing. Service could be better, waitress was extremely inattentive. She sat at the bar on her phone for an extensive amount of time before checking in. I sushi and asked for my Thai iced tea to be in a to go cup. She brought everything out in a to go cup and proceeded to tell me I couldn't stay to eat my food.

Yelp
This place is very affordable, has good portion sizes, and tasty. I ordered the drunken noodles with vegetables (lunch) and chicken basil fried rice (lunch). The drunken noodles were soo good. The noodles were soft but not falling apart and had absorbed the sauce well. The vegetables were very fresh, still firm, and with so much flavor and color. The sauce was on the sweet side with a bit of spice from time to time. The chicken basil fried rice was spicy. I don't think it was an unbearable spicy but I do think it could've tasted a bit better with less spice so others natural flavors can shine such as the chicken and veggies. I really enjoyed the times when I would find pieces or small chunks of fried (actual marks) rice, it just had a way better taste. Overall, the vegetables were also crunchy and tasty and the chicken was tender. These meals were very simple, but had tons of flavor and were able to fill me up all for $20. I ordered again from this place and they did not disappoint. This time I would give the food 5 stars! I had the chicken typhoon lunch and pad Thai with chicken. The pad Thai is sweet with a nutty flavor, and occasional crunchy texture from the bean sprouts, nuts, and scallions. The chicken typhoon lunch is excellent with an even mix of spicy and sweet. The sauce is a tiny bit thick and really gets absorbed by the chicken and veggies. The veggies are fresh and crunchy and mostly sweet which contribute to balancing out the spicy flavor. Especially for the price, AND flavor of these dishes, you cannot go wrong with getting any of these plates for lunch.

Yelp
Stopped in here while in the area for lunch and the place may be small in size but it was pretty good. Fast service and a nice interior, friendly waitstaff and a menu of both sushi and Thai food of all types and a nice cocktail menu. The food was delicious and hit the spot and was fresh and tasty. Plus the prices were not bad at all. Parking is tight around here and its all on street, however if you can find a spot, stop in here.

Yelp
Great little spot at the base of the Bunker hill. I've never been so psychedelically spiced out in my life, in the best way possible. Avocado curry is the move. Their food quality to price ratio is the best around in my opinion.

Yelp
Walked in right before closing and they sat us down right away. The food was AMAZING and very flavorful, the service was efficient and quick. Their mango sticky rice dessert is a must try! 10/10

Yelp
Even though my order was 30 minutes late, since I went to pick up my order, the girl with glasses standing at the counter is very rude and uninterested, all she does is look at her phone. he has a careless attitude

Yelp
I don't know why this place has 3.7 stars!! I went there on a whim with my friend and we were just amazed by the food, the fast service, the presentation, the decoration, everything!! It was fantastic food. We got pad Thai, sushi, fried avocado and sweet rice. It was all so perfect. Give them a try!!

Barb M.

Yelp
The food is great have been or ordered from this restaurant and the food is always great and at the right temperature.

Kait M.

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in Charlestown! The restaurant is really nice in the inside, very clean, and well decorated. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The food is also delicious, and we appreciate how much they can customize and accommodate. The chicken broccoli dish is one of our favs!
google avatar

Victoria H.

Yelp
One of my go-to takeout spots in Boston! My food is always fresh and absolutely delicious; the sushi bomb roll happens to be my favorite.
google avatar

Allegra P.

Yelp
I had a great time here, the water is so good and they never let your cup run low. The sushi is great and the crispy chicken pad Thai looked so good I'll have to come back and try it!
google avatar

Damian M.

Yelp
Just ok. Neither great Thai, nor sushi. Just OK. I know better than to expect much from Asian restaurants that mix up their cuisine. Food was delivered by Grubhub fast hot and efficient. The food traveled well and was packed really well. It's good in a pinch but I'm going to keep looking for that killer Thai spot somewhere out there in Boston:)

Rae S.

Yelp
Sushi does not taste fresh. I've given this place so many chances because I want it to be good so badly, and to have a sushi restaurant in my neighborhood. But it's just not good, sad to say. Steer clear if you want good sushi.

Skyler M.

Yelp
A must visit. Best sushi I've had in Boston. The specialty rolls we got were delicious and so fresh. The noodle curry dish was amazing. 10/10 recommend.

Ray S.

Yelp
We dined in for a change. Being local we usually do takeout. The restaurant is clean and quaint and the food was tasty and quick. We will definitely be back for table service.
google avatar

Dana R.

Yelp
Very long wait..order ctook about 1 hour ..longer than app said. Uber Eats reported it was ready and had to wait 10 min more Food is usually good bit very inconvenient.
google avatar

Yelp
I would recommend sweet rice for anyone on the hunt for sushi in Charlestown. There is plenty of indoor dining as well and makes for a great lunch or dinner spot. The staff is always very friendly as well! The hungry dragon roll is my favorite and you can't go wrong with the gyoza or fried rice
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Not feeling up to going into the night for dinner, I arranged an online delivery of sushi from Sweet Rice. It arrived just about on time and the order was correct. The only thing missing was a pair of chopsticks to go with the maki and hand roll. The rolls were assembled well and the hand roll was nicely stuffed with salmon skin. Easy to eat and it felt like I was making a healthy choice. I would order from Sweet Rice again.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! The food was amazing, and I love how there is a Thai menu and Japanese menu. The quality of seafood was great, and everything was very fresh. You also get a lot of food for the amount of money you're paying - pretty decent cost! I would highly recommend coming here for food if you're visiting Charlestown.
google avatar

Ali K.

Yelp
Love sweet rice! Im so confused by the negative reviews on here, I've been a sweet rice take out customer for the last 3+ years. I've had nothing but positive interactions with staff and great food consistently. I live nearby so I stop in frequently. Favorites: crab Rangoon- they add an interesting twist with berry, chicken satay - masterfully grilled chicken and great peanut sauce, steamed Gyoza - perfect, tuna & avocado roll w/mango - go to sushi, roasted Brussels- deliciously crispy with soy sauce flavor, cashew chicken - sooo good I would eat this everyday if I was allowed to, sweet & sour chicken - I crave this all the time, massaman curry -good rice, tasty overall, not too spicy, & somewhat uniquely has tomato. I'm working my way through there massive menu and keep being delighted to find new flavorful favorites! Great takeout, I highly recommend for Sushi and Thai!
google avatar

Gaby L.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite Thai/Japanese food I've ever had. I think I order from them at least once a week! The pad thai, kua gai and Tom Kha soup are all AMAZING!

Mark A.

Yelp
Crab Rangoon are delicious! Been here quite a few times never regret it, fast service too.
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
Ordered lunch from them. Should have thrown it away immediately from the smell. The chicken tasted like leftovers from the night before as well as the dumplings. I called the restaurant to complain. I was told that she could not find my order; that she was busy. She also asked if I ordered from their other location. Then she told me to call Grubhub which I did and got a refund.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
With the limited (aka almost none) Thai and Chinese restaurants in FiDi, my coworkers and I turned to Foodler to find some good delivery for lunch. Sweet Rice seemed promising so we gave it a shot. Lunch specials themselves are about $10 - portion-wise, I was a little unimpressed with my Seafood Kee Mao (Sautéed shrimps, scallops, mussels and squid with bamboo shoots, string beans, red peppers mushrooms, basil, and minced hot chili) - the spice was there but the variety in Seafood? Not so much? There was A as in one mussel. Maybe 2 scallops. 1 shrimp. You get the point. My one coworker enjoyed his spicy chicken lunch special and my other didn't really enjoy her pad Thai. Apparently the way the meat was cooked tainted the flavor of the pad Thai.
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
Wow! Amazing Sushi. I tried this spot in Charlestown by chance. I wanted sushi. My boyfriend wanted Thai food wow, A+ for both cuisines. Cute interior. Good for lunch if dinner. Good for a date or with the family or solo. Awesome sushi.
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
Came here from New York for a snowboarding trip and was looking for a decent Japanese place in Boston and this place came up! Amazing sushi and sashimi! Had a great time here and will definitely come back again when we are in town ;) ps. Wonderful service as well!
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
Decided to venture out of Boston and into Charlestown for sushi. EXCEEDED expectations! Not just sushi, Sweet Rice has both Japanese and Thai cuisine so if you're feeling torn as I always do you don't even need to make the choice. Okay so honestly, every thing was great. Really, can't go wrong from the salmon rolls to varieties of fried rice and pad thai. Now with that said there was one unexpected star of the order. Admittedly I ordered it almost solely for the name alongside several other rolls. But THE SPONGEBOB was everything. If I remember correctly it is Shrimp Tempura, cream cheese, and cucumber wrapped with rice and topped with MANGO Fresh Mango! And I think the real secret is the honey coconut sauce, very interesting, unexpected, but exceptional. So all I'm saying is order what you normally would but don't forget 'The Spongebob'!
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
We've eaten at Sweet Rice quite a few times over the years and have done take out from there as well. Last night (Saturday) we dined in with a group of four people to try new dishes (and some old favorites). The food was, as always, outstanding, and the service was wonderful. This is a true family business and it shows in the care given to every aspect of the meal. We love their duck dishes, have had all three many times now. Our favorite is probably the roasted duck due primarily to the luscious spicy hoisin sauce which comes with it). Eggplant and bok choy dishes are always excellent as well. Last night we also tried the sushi/sashimi platter (for the first time) and were very impressed with the quality of the fish as well as the presentation. They have some wonderful appetizers (the Hae Kainge and the Shrimp Nime Chow are two of our favorites, though we had bone-in spareribs, shrimp rolls, and steamed pork dumplings last night to try something new and were very impressed by the flavors) to start the meal and their array of mixed drinks has something for every taste. They also make a perfectly balanced Thai iced tea. There are so many dishes we have yet to explore and are looking forward to doing so.

Yelp
Sweet rice is good, but lacking in some areas. If they run out of something you'll get your money back, but not with the tax you initially paid for. Also, I found a hair in my food recently. :( Got delivery and the driver missed a bag completely. The restaurant apparently forgot to give it to the driver. All in all, this place is good and if they fix these little issues I'll continue to support their business. PS: Thai pancakes are bomb, and the spongebob roll is also amazing.

Shaun M.

Yelp
Great food - delivered on time. Basil veg with tofu was great - chicken satay a bit dry

Yelp
I ordered for a VIP meeting in my office through these guys, through EZCater. The VIPs loved it, so now I"m just going to order the sushi, the chicken, and the tofu array that I ordered last time. Presented pretty well. Smelled lovely. Looked pretty.

Lauren T.

Yelp
Best thai food in boston. Hands down-- get the crab rangoons. It's my go-to take-out and the place I'm the most regular at. It has yet to fail me.
