Thai Rolled Ice Cream and Waffles Shop Sweet Charlie’s Opens in Austin-Area - Eater Austin

"Sweet Charlie’s, a Philadelphia-based chain that serves “Thai-inspired” rolled ice cream and Belgian waffles, is getting its first Austin-area location this summer. The store will open at 2800 South Interstate 35 in Round Rock on Saturday, August 10. Sweet Charlie’s allows customers to make their own ice cream creations. Starting with an ice cream, yogurt, or vegan base, ingredients are added to create flavors like strawberry cheesecake or coffee and donuts. The ice cream is then chilled on a frozen surface and scraped into rolled, before adding free toppings like fruit, chocolate chips, or whipped cream. The ice cream can be served in a cup, in a donut, or on a Belgian waffle. The shop will also serve milkshakes. Sweet Charlie’s was started in Philadelphia in 2015. It joins other rolled ice cream specialists Frozen Rolls Creamery on North Lamar, Holla Mode near Zilker, and brick-and-mortar Zero Below Ice Cream on Research Boulevard." - Erin Russell

Google
First time here and it wasn’t obvious how to place your order. Might want to work on your menu board to explain the steps to build your order. Very confusing and had to ask multiple questions. The ice cream was really good when it was served. Expensive but very good.

There are obviously pros and cons with having to use a QR code to order.. we liked the fact that we could order and customize online so we could take our time ordering being a first time customer and not hold up a line.. also, it frees up a worker to work on orders, who would otherwise have to tend to people ordering upfront, which in turn could possibly delay making orders.. they were obviously short handed, only 2 workers with about 10 customers.. but with that said, we didn't mind it at all and the guy that made our order was very friendly and funny.. we ordered the mini pancakes and were made to perfection! Crispy crust but fluffy in the middle.. we opted for chocolate drizzle, toasted marshmallows with strawberry and pistachio ice cream.. wanted some fresh strawberries but they were out..and honestly, did not need them.. Will definitely come back with the kiddos next time..

Super friendly and welcoming staff. We enjoyed watching them make the ice cream, and it was delicious. I thought it was a large serving for the price. Will definitely return!

Google
The best ice cream you can find in the area! Very good service and speed. They make it fresh in front of you. The flavor is amazing and the ice cream is rich, creamy, and delicious and not overly sweet (don’t worry it’s plenty sweet). Very good ice cream; much better than any other shop in the area.

Google
We were visiting Austin and wanted to find a good ice cream place. Sweet rolls came recommended so we decided to try it. Great ice cream and generous portions. The owner was very kind and clearly cared about what he was serving. Definitely will be back next time we are here.

Took my mom and kids here. They had a great time. We loved the rolled ice cream. I recommend regular ice cream compared to frozen yogurt. It’s more rich, unless you are looking for something more tart. I tried the mocha and my kids had one with cake and sprinkles. They have halal gummy bears/marshmallows, etc. Definitely want to try more flavors next time.

$17 for two “medium” cups? I wouldn’t even call them medium — the cups were almost empty. The ice cream had no flavor, just something cold. Definitely not worth the price. I wanted to take pictures for my story, but the presentation wasn’t appealing at all. On top of that, the girl serving us was cold and unhelpful — no smile, no guidance on how to order. Ironically, the” little kid “I paid was more welcoming and engaging than the actual staff. I’ve always wanted to try rolled ice cream, but sadly, this experience completely killed my excitement.

Yelp
A random discovery after dinner turned out to be a great experience. We walked in to a warm welcome. This place is run by family & friends and they were happy to walk us through the concept of a rolled ice cream. Kids loved watching their treats being created right in front of them. Overall a great vibe and a fun experience. Go treat yourself!

Yelp
This was not our favorite way to enjoy ice cream. It's a cool concept and I like that you can add custom ingredients to the mix, but we didn't care for ice cream rolls and it was super pricey! FYI: Be prepared to wait a good 20-30 minutes for your order They only had two people working and it took forever.
