Sweet Yams

Amazing!!! Homey, such healthy and comforting flavors, and amazing staff. I am gluten free and dairy usually makes my stomach upset, so I'm always looking for gluten free alternatives, and usually they're also vegan friendly places like Sweet Yams. The atmosphere is like walking into a greenhouse-- its so quaint and special. Even the ordering window is cute. I ordered the blackened and sweet chili salmon and it was well cooked, and such a balanced meal with salad and brown rice. I also got the sweet potato cupcake. The cupcake blew my mind. It was so moist and cinnamon flavor, resembling a carrot cake. When i move to San Antonio, this is going to be a go to place! Especially for that cupcake! I can't wait to try all the other items

No parking, smack in the middle of the city. It's like an old run down house. No thank you.

When I was diagnosed with Celiac in the early 2000s, this place was one of the first that had food I could eat. I felt less anxious and embarrassed about my new diagnosis. Shame on me for never giving it a proper review, for not having photographs to add, and, most importantly, everything I ordered is now in my belly (lol). I devoured the mac and cheese, the lemon chicken, the rice, and the salad. Not to be forgotten are the sweet potato cupcakes for dessert. In 2011, I kindly asked if they could make me a whole cake since I cannot have gluten, and they did so. I'm very thankful for this establishment providing healthy, organic Southern takeout. I told myself that there was such a bigger offering of food for me, and I'd save half for dinner, but it was so delicious it's all gone! I want more mac and cheese, so I'll be around again and not be such a stranger. They have a cute outdoor patio, and parking is a bit tight, so there's also a delivery option. In all the years I've been there, it's the friendliness of the owners and staff that keeps this place thriving. The vibe is great, and there are plants inside and outside, as well as art.

I lamented earlier today how there aren't a lot of healthy lunch options in San Antonio... and then I tried Sweet Yams. Wow! A hole-in-the wall type place offering delicious, fresh, nutritious, no-frills type meals. Just real. good. FOOD. My husband doesn't gravitate toward health-type food but even he said we would absolutely be back. Seating is a covered outdoor patio. Even on a 90-degree day we were pretty comfortable and loved the quiet oasis ambience with all the plants. Worth the price, friendly staff, and a nut-free kitchen which is of particular interest to us!!

This is my first visit to Sweet Yams. I had been trying to get here sooner and never did. When I say this is a hole in the wall, believe it. But you know what they say about hole in the wall places, they have THE BEST food and this place didn't disappoint. I got my food to go, at first I thought the portion was skimpy for the price. But when I plated the blackened chicken, brown rice and salad, it filled my plate(see pic). This was a FABULOUS meal!! I couldn't even finish it, will finish for dinner. Their dessert, sweet potato muffin and sweet potato pie was also delish. Although I am pretty far from the location, I will be returning.

SWEET YAMS IS SO GOod!!! My first time eating here and OMG!! I wasn't disappointed!! The service was awesome , the portions were huge and I definitely will be going back to try an another meal. This is the new vegan come up!!

First time eating here. My husband Googled healthy food and this popped up. We enjoyed our food and the atmosphere was nice. Sitting outside was kind of romantic but hot, they have shade though. No issues with service, everyone was pleasant and answered our questions about the menu. Good healthier option when in the downtown area.

Holy crap. This place is AMAZEBALLS!! We are in town for the Rock-n-Roll half marathon and needed a gluten-friendly place for some good carb loading, and we totally hit the jackpot here. The food is absolutely delicious, and I was so impressed with how many good gluten-free options there were. I'm so used to those options having terrible texture or no flavor, but that is not the case here!! The staff is all extremely friendly and welcoming, and the patio area is super cute. The entire space is inviting. 10/10 would recommend...we're already talking about coming back for one last pre-race carb-loading meal tonight.

Parking contains about 4 spaces, plan to park a block away. Takeout window can be painfully slow, like a food truck. Food options are varied. I ordered the blackened bbq chicken breasts. Food was delicious and the spinach salad is a welcome healthy option. Seating is outdoor patio style.

I stopped by Sweet Yams because I was in the area and wanted to pick up a healthy gluten-free lunch to take home. This establishment is a gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurant that is only a couple of miles from the downtown area. The parking is extremely limited to the point that only three or four cars can fit in the parking space. Inside Sweet Yams is not much larger than their parking lot. But it's a really cool place. Nothing magical, nothing fancy, nothing classy, but simple. It's the structure of a small wooden building with nettings covering the top and sides so it gives you the feel of outdoors, which I liked. I also liked the many plants and flowers that they have linking the structure. There's a walk-up window where you place your order which gives the surf club vibe with all of the stickers everywhere. I ordered the Bella & Onions Chicken and sat at one of their "window seats" to wait on the food to be cooked (I love that the food is not pre-made). The food portions were huge...probably could have eaten it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! The chicken breast was nice and tender but I could have used a little more seasoning. I loved the brown rice and mushrooms! The salad was very plain, greens and carrot slivers but the salad dressing was AMAZING! There are more interesting items on the menu and Iwill definitely return to Sweet Yams for more of their healthy food options.

This place is soooooo amazing. I love that they are organic as well! Everything was delicious and bonus points for being healthy. The restaurant is a small, cute location that sits on a street by itself. Service was fast and workers were very nice. Everytime I visit San Antonio I will always come here to support.

Oh my heavens. This is the spot!!!!!!!!!!! Was looking for a quick and healthy meal to go to near me and Google suggested Sweet Yams. I've passed by this place before and made a mental note to check it out, but forgot about it. I ordered a meal online - blackened sesame ginger chicken with brown rice and a side salad, and picked it up about 20 minutes later. When I telll youuuu this was the most flavorful, delicious chicken I have had in San Antonio... I am not kidding!!! Far exceeded my expectations, I'm dying for this chicken recipe. It was so delicious and satisfying. I can't wait to try more of their food!! It's a very casual place near the Alamodome. They do have a patio you can eat at or you can take it to go. The lady in the window was so kind. They do have limited parking spots in their lot, but I'm sure you could find some street parking too. This is a hole in the wall place absolutely worth checking out! San Antonio needs more healthy options like this!! Compliments to the chef!

Outstanding restaurant just east of downtown. The food and service are excellent. Our favorites are the blackened chicken, Mac and cheese and salad. The sweet potato cupcakes are a must as well! Parking lot is very small but the food is worth checking it out.

Update: So it's been a couple of years since I visited, due to the pandemic. Today I decided to share this gem with a dear friend of mine and I was immediately surprised. Sweet Yams created a new outdoor seating area in the front of the restaurant?! Wow, ok I loved the nostalgia of the old outdoor seating out back (it's no longer available) with the feel of the garden, but this was very pleasant and quaint. We had the Turkey Chili, Garlic Shrimp and Salads. Y'all know how I feel about the Sweet Potato Muffins already. The delicious food, the retro music, the entire vibe...all speaks to their care and hospitality. My friend was beyond impressed! I could see her skepticism when we pulled up, but please don't judge this heavenly restaurant by the exterior. I even caught a glimpse of one of the owners dancing in the kitchen (we shared a laugh) as she prepared the food...made my day. That's how much love and positive energy goes into to the food everybody. Don't hesitate...please go by there and support this awesome restaurant!

I haven't been to Sweet Yams in 4 long years. Covid and life have caused me to be otherwise occupied. It's still the delightful hole in the wall it's always been! The mushrooms on their mushroom burger are amazing. They taste just like an excellent mushroom soup I had in England 6 years ago (and ate about 3 bowls of). It's not cheap, but there's a lot of heart put into the food. I'm very glad I came back. Give it a try! Also tip: it looks like their only seating is on an outdoor semi-covered patio. If the weather is bad, maybe take the food to go. They used to have indoor seating when I went there four years ago, but there would have to be a lot of furniture shifting to make room for tables now.

Loved this place. It has a wonderfully comforting outdoor seating area- small but nice. They serve great tasting meals. I didn't take pics. :( But you order up front.

If you're looking for something refreshing, comforting and delicious I highly recommend Sweet Yams!! I love salmon and Sweet Yams definitely knows how to season their food!! Reminds me of home cooked meals, and if your wanting to eat in they have an outside patio and is just so peaceful. I believe Shanon one of the cooks, I spoke to her and she was very lovely and as well the other workers, very friendly and welcoming

Today Shannon and her team delivered 300 hot meals to the City of San Antonio event. Shannon did an amazing job. Food was so delicious. They were on time with the delivery and all smiles. Thank you SweetYams for an amazing lunch!

The weather was so nice yesterday! I decided to get out and try Sweet Yams Located on N. Cherry St. I really love to support local businesses within my area. I had the salmon with ginger sauce over rice which came with a delicious fresh side salad. I also decided to try the sweet potato pie. Everything was super fresh and tasty! The portions were generous and definitely healthy. The service was fantastic as well. The seating is covered / outdoor seating . Which I absolutely love being outside. Within walking distance from the Alamodome. If you like being outside great place to go eat healthy and get some fresh air!

Tried this place for the first time with a group of friends. There's only 3-4 parking spaces out front and you have to park across the street. You can actually miss it because it doesn't look like a food establishment with so few parking spaces. There are large plastic picnic tables with seats inside a screened in space. The menu is at the front of the entrance and the bathroom impractical. You have to get out of the way to open the door bc it's right up against some shelves. It was clean but defiantly not easy too maneuver. I ordered the mushroom burger that came with brown rice and a side salad. It was just OK. Another lady ordered the chicken and didn't like it. Shortly before I finished my meal, mosquitoes started biting my ankles. I was so miserable that I bowed out early. I didn't even order something for my daughter, like I planned because the mosquitoes ran me out of there. It seems like a good idea for plant-based food that delivers and does takeout, but sitting there to eat is not ideal. Actually, the mushroom burger was disappointing, the parking a mess, and the bathroom situation not safe, so I would not recommend.

I love eating healthy, so I'm so glad that we discovered this little gem! The first time we came here, we thought we were in the wrong place because it looks like more like a makeshift greenhouse than a restaurant. However, we gave it a chance, and I'm so glad we did. I ordered the blackened salmon with chili love sauce and veggies. Husband ordered blackened chicken. Our two teens ordered the sesame ginger chicken. Everyone loved it! Even though hubby's blackened chicken was good on its own, he said he wished he had added the chili love sauce. I highly recommend adding it to everything! Tip #1: Get there early because they sometimes run out of the veggies. Tip #2: There's no a/c so if you go in the summer, I'd recommend taking it to go. Tip #3: Get the Chili Love sauce & veggies!!

OMG! Like O-M-G this place is absolutely amazing! I mean their food is a 10/10, it tastes like a comforting fresh home cooked meal. Their food tastes very fresh and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone :-)

The food was great and so was the customer service, BUT the atmosphere was horrible, that is why I haven't been back in years! Will I give it another try, maybe! I believe in supporting small business, especially on the east side. If you cannot put the money that I spend back into your entablement, that is a problem!

"Cute" little place tucked away off Commerce in SA thats little more than a hut type take out place with just a few seats and tables out back. Most orders are take out it seems here. Nothing fancy at all but a sole focus on just what they make quite clear in their mission: healthy, organic, nutritious food that taste good and is good for body, mind and planet. I got the bella chicken with organic brown rice, side salad and a sweet tater cupcake. All for about 12 bucks. Portions are not bad, quality is solid and flavor is on point. Its pretty much like the meal prep type meals I do at home but here they doing it for you. I would suggest the bella chicken for sure as a good pick. The sweet tater cupcake also a nice sweet ending to a grab n go lunch. I wish I had more time to do a sit down meal here to really take it in more but tis not the case. Shannon the owner (I think) who took my order is awesome, kind, friendly and obviously happy to be doing what she does there.

If your veggie & GF, there's a lot of options to choose from, or combine & make your own dish. The food is always FRESH, Delicious & Homemade. Also, no matter how busy they get, the service is always excellent. You may want to order in advance if your on a time limit because everything is made to order. This little Diamond in the rough may look small, but they have plenty patio seating in the front & in the back of house, or take out.

I finally made it!!! This restaurant has been on my "vegetarian go-to" list for what seems like forever. I'm so glad I went and even better enjoyed it! It's a quaint restaurant on the downtown east side. I went on a Friday afternoon for lunch. I got there at about 11:15am so ahead of the crowd. I pulled up and the place is a quaint, earthy looking building. The parking lot alone really let me know the vibes and I loved it. They have a compost bin in the parking lot and some areas were they fo or trying to have a garden. Walking into the quaint structure my eyes wanted to look everywhere. Not that their was a lot to look at but it's different. It's not a place I think they expected people to stay and eat but because it has such a cool, chill vibe you want to stay and eat your food there. You order at this little window which has a really friendly cashier. You can see that on the other side of that window is the kitchen which isn't really big. Once you order they will call your name to come get your food. If you order a drink they are located across the window in giant coolers. I didn't know that's how you get your drinks so I thought I'd pass it along. They have some old wooden tables and chairs inside, not many. They have about 5 picnic tables outside which is where I ate. It's a covered area and really chill you can hear the music but you should check inside for your food because you can't hear them call you when outside. I ordered the Zen Veggie sandwich. It's sautéed vegetables with their po'boy sauce served with a salad and brown rice. It was great! I really enjoyed the sautéed veggies and the gluten free bun was not bad either. The Brown rice was great, like cooked perfectly! I had thought this was a strictly vegetarian restaurant but it's not. They also have chicken and fish food options. That's good to know so I can drag my meat eating friends along next time. I'll definitely be back to try their other vegetarian options and enjoy the cool vibes. Hopefully they'll be playing Earth, Wind, & Fire again when I return!

Haven't had their food, but sweets were pretty good. Place is cute and will probably try one day if they ever stay open passed 2pm. Hours start at 11am.

Quietly sitting in an unpretentious little building on Cherry Street is this little gem. If you are on a clean diet, this is a superior place for you. They definitely saved our sanity during a detox diet. You could not ask for a sweeter greeting, or a sharper person than the young lady who will take your order. She remembered our orders from the very first day! On return visits, she has known exactly what we ordered in the previous visit, which has helped us to order the correct items for our diet. What a blessing! A favorite has been the Bella & Onion Chicken, with a side of sweet yams (ask for butter, if you'd like). Last visit, we added the Broccoli & Garlic. Sweet Yams will be on our regular rotation of restaurants from now on.

The salmon with the Chili Love Sauce was amazing! The sauce was sweet and with a hint of spice, very flavorful. The sweet potato cupcake was so good. Tasted like a sweet potato pie in muffin form! Just enough icing on top not to overpower the cupcake. The could not tell Mac n cheese was gluten free! Very cheesy and the noodles were perfect. The salad was just salad, nothing more or less. The gumbo was very tasty as well. Flavorful, full of veggies and meat with a nice kick! Parking is limited. No way around it. And there isn't really street parking available bc it's off a main road. It's just first come, first serve. The service was pretty fast though. They gave me a buzzer and I wanted maybe 10-15 minutes before it went off (if that long). There is space for dining in if you choose. I had a great first visit and can't wait to try more menu items!

Definitely a hole in a wall type of place. Does not look like much but the food is delicious and packed with so much flavor. Portions look small but are filling and you are left with a light feeling not heavy which makes you groggy. They're always on time with call in orders for pick up. However, their parking is horrendous and it's very hard to maneuver out with a car larger than a compact car.

Two words HOLY SMOKES. All of my taste buds just died and went to heaven. This place is PHENOMENAL. Our food was ridiculously flavorful, fresh, healthy... out of this world delicious. Everything was made to perfection. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better ... the sweet potato cupcake and mini sweet potato pie came out. We will be back.... tomorrow !! Haha Customer service was on point , the food cAme out quick and the vibes here are great. Lots of greenery and great music. It's a little hole in the wall cafe that will most def blow your mind!! Hidden gem.. almost drove right by this place.. so glad i found you! The cashier was very helpful. He suggested i try the organic mushroom burger which was a great choice. I ordered the sautéd greens and 2 sweet potato cupcakes .. everything was scrumptious.. i will add this place to my list of faves Only con i arrived too late in the day and they were out of mac & cheese ! So next time I'll show up a little earlier. I totally recommend this place!

Lemon chicken and rice does not get better than this . Best rice I have ever tried in my life . Always come here for lunch and they never disappoint. This lemon chicken is very flavorful. If anyone is by the area and wants a quick healthy lunch . This is the place to go !

Delicious, fresh and low key. It's hard to spot and not much to look at but we enjoyed our food. Be ready to wipe down your own table after your meal.

Have never ordered anything not tasty from here. The blackened chicken is delicious! Comes with brown rice and a tasty salad. Have ordered takeout during covid through their online site and have had zero issues. They send out a text when your order is ready. The staff is friendly and the food is tasty! A plus that they have organic and other healthy food options as there's not that many to start with in a city infatuated with Tex-mex. Easy access downtown too so riding your bike here is not a problem. Come give it a try!

I had my best meal in San Antonio right here at Sweet Yams, chilling in what looks likes someone's backyard. This is a small but mighty business serving up satisfying veggie eats. It's the kind of place you go hungry, order at the walk up window, and wait patiently for made to order freshness. Upon first bite it will make you start mentally checking your schedule to see if another visit is possible. You may even contemplate ordering more food for later just so you can take it with you. It's Southern inspired, which means we were compelled to order sides of red beans and rice and sauteed greens with our mushroom burgers. Every bite was delicious. My only regret here is not being able to come back for a second trip. I'm kicking myself for not learning about the door dash app sooner and satisfying another craving for this food. I don't plan on coming back to San Antonio anytime soon, but if you're going you should stuff your face here.

They are currently ensuring a safe environment for customers and employees. They are only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays for take out. You can call in or order online (my suggestion) Food is ready within 15 minutes but I called them to let them know I would be about 90 min late. I wanted to get my order in, as they sell out. Omnivores, pescatarians and vegans can not just find something to eat, but find a something that precipitate a suddenly personal When Harry Met Sally diner moment. Like how is this vegan red beans and rice so good?!? This shouldn't be, but it is. Thank Gaia it is.The chicken was so succulent and was flavor punch to my face! I was so pleasantly surprised by how intriguing the flavor of the mixed greens were. The sesame seed flavor was delicious. The greens were sautéed to perfection. They had a crisp crunch in all the right places. I can't believe it took me this long to get here. I'm so glad to have fresh flavor food available! Found Sweet Yams on Instagram. I'm so glad I finally tried it...ordered online and picked up. It didn't disappoint. It was every bit as delicious and fresh as their instagram pictures look. I tried the lemon shrimp and garlic shrimp. I can't stress how fresh the food tastes. It's nice to have such a good fresh meal you can take out instead of fast food. I also saw they had a nice covered patio too. And the cashier was very friendly, pickup was on time, and they send a text when it's ready which is helpful. Parking was a bit tricky but I read in other comments there is free parking on surrounding streets if their small parking lot is full. Glad I saw that for my future visits because I'm definitely going to be back and highly recommend to others.

Outstanding food. The shift there really know their stuff. If you're looking for organic fresh raw vegan clean food this is the place. Excellent chef. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Place is awesome atmosphere clean. Great place to meet friends and hang out for a good food and drinks. One of my faves in San Antonio!!

I was super bummed that they were sold out of the mac n cheese and the gumbo- those were both the things I wanted, but I get it, If it's good you gotta get there and get it before it sells. So instead I ordered the lemon shrimp. ....but then they didn't give me lemon shrimp, they gave me Lemmon chicken, and I didn't realize until I got home. Whhhhhhy, world?! All good though, whatever, cause the bbq chicken sandwich was bomb, the corn was perfectly seasoned, the yams were steamed just right, and that tiny little cupcake was the stuff dreams are made out of. Hopefully next time they're not sold or the bests, and they get my order right

You have to know I didn't know where I was going or what to expect...a local said, "Oh, you Must go..." And so I did. In the most torrential downpour - and found it seemed to be quite wet and cold inside Sweet Yams because the inside is the outside. I think. It seems to be a shack of a place - complete with rickety door - guarding the INSIDE kitchen area. I think I walked through hanging sheets of screening... mismatched chairs and tables...a circular space heater...grab your own drink from the cooler on a table. The girl behind the window said, "You are in for a treat!" Was super friendly and made noncommittal suggestions about what was good - because it's all good. I ordered a Chicken Joy (veggies, salad, cous cous ) for $9 and didn't find it noteworthy. Fresh. Good. Not over the top. What I did find awesome was a local social worker who bought me (visitor) a yam cupcake and said, "You've got to have one of these as a welcome to our city!"

You have to stop by here. Such good vegetarian options. The shrimp were 10/10 and the mac & cheese was divine. The dessert cupcake was mouthwatering as well. The place may not look like much from outside but you seriously need to give it a stop!

Ok the spot is very small and unassuming. I took my elderly parents and immediately thought I should've taken them to a handicap friendlier spot. That being said... I love their food, menu, execution and balance with salad, protein and carbs. I finished my plate and didn't feel bloated. Everything was tasty because yes I picked at everyone else's plate. Idk how they're managing in this swelter heat of summer but order it to go. It is is perfect picnic date food. Parking is tight and seating is limited. Prices could be more reasonable for the area.

The food is fresh and delicious. It is a little pricey. Come early if you want to have something in particular as they run out of stuff quick. The mini pie was so delicious. Loved the flavor of everything we had. The turkey chili, the shrimp po boy and my ginger sesame shrimp.

They are the best. Fresh ingredients, great flavor, quick service. Support this incredible local business! I am vegan and my daughter has gluten intolerance, so we love finding places we can eat together.

Best hidden gem in San Antonio by far. Food was great and we loved the patio setting. Will be back.
