Ann Arbor’s 11 Best Ice Cream Shops | Eater Detroit

"This South U shop serves trendy Thai rolled ice cream — a thin layer of milk mixed with different ingredients on a frigid griddle until creamy and rolled into a cup. Choose a flavor like Monkey Love (bananas and Nutella) and Sweetheart (strawberry and graham cracker) and add additional toppings for a decadent chilled treat." - John Reyes

I appreciate the response to my original review, but I want to clarify that what was said doesn’t reflect what actually happened during my visit. The kiosks were not in the middle of updating—they weren’t even turned on until about 15 minutes after the store opened. One staff member arrived late, and for a good while, both employees were in the back laughing and talking while customers waited. I had only stayed because my daughter had been waiting for them to open, otherwise I would have left. I understand that things happen, but I was disappointed not just in the delay, but in the lack of urgency or acknowledgment from the staff at the time. I do appreciate the offer to make things right, but I also think it’s important to be honest about what actually happened so improvements can truly be made.

We got a little frustrated because one payment machine was down, but they didn’t have a sign or tell us, even after we went through the process several times. The service seemed a little slow. But the results were amazing! Loved the ice cream! Great flavor combinations!

Brown Sugar milk tea is my go to drink. The workers are always nice. I like ordering on the kiosks I can see all my options and customizations. Easy to park at the mall

The tea was so good! I’m not sure if the pumpkin spice tea is seasonal but it’s amazing. I would get lower sweetness as the normal sweetness is a lot. Will come again! It’s great.

Cute place with yummy treats 😋 We had the cookies and cream rolled ice cream and you can choose up to 3 toppings included in the price.

Alright I know this was not right when I looked at the color. This is tea flavored milk, instead of milk tea. Two stars are for nice staff and convenient location, but if you wanna real milk tea, go to Coco/Kung Fu Tea/Moge Tea/Tea Ninja, not here or Boba House or Chatime. They add too much water into the drink

My husband picked up some rolled ice cream and a taro smoothie for us and brought it home. I’m surprised the ice cream wasn’t melted after the 20 min drive home. I’m not sure how to describe the texture of the ice cream but it was amazing. The taro flavor was so delicious and the texture was so much creamier than other rolled ice cream I’ve had. I loved it, my daughter loved it, my husband loved it. Big fans and we’ll definitely be back. M taros smoothie was also delicious. He said the teens who were working last night were helpful and clearly did a great job!

Yelp
We ordered through the kiosk and had no interaction with staff. Once the tea is ready they set it on the counter and turn right back around. The space is small and visually busy with lots of decor but they do offer a seating area. This boba place is located right as you enter through the restaurant side. Prices were about $1 more than the boba tea place right in the middle of the mall from them. The drink overall looked and it tasted okay more on the bitter end.

Yelp
I visited Sweeting for the first time a couple of months into the Pandemic and I found the drink at that point to be well below average/borderline bad - I have it in my notes that the drink was watered down and the boba was all stuck together in a big blob. I decided to stop by again to give it a second chance since I was in the mall. Original Milk Tea, Large, 50% Sweet w/ Boba ($6.70) - Sweeting normally uses whole milk in their milk tea drinks, so it leaves a distinct dairy flavor vs. a more traditional creamer or milk powder construction. The black tea taste does come through, with a slight bitter astringency. The boba had a sticky and chewy exterior with a nice qq interior very reminiscent of a honey soaked boba. While it was on the slightly hard side throughout, the boba was greatly improved by whatever sugar syrup they use as a soak (I'm not certain it's honey but it certainly feels like it). Overall the drink was pretty good for a place that mostly prebrews their tea and is much improved over my previous trip. Sweeting has definitely made a good recovery from the Pandemic blues, and I would be glad to come back in the future.

Yelp
I was awaiting Uber and had a taste for boba tea so I stopped in. It's overwhelming with everything on the flyer but I asked upon dairy free and I saw they had the option and was told upon it. I saw they had frosty, in my mind I'm assuming fruit slushy so I ordered lychee with boba.even mentioned to the individual working that I want to do something fruity this time. So I get the tea and I try it. I went back out of curiosity and asked was this brown sugar because I didn't really taste lychee and they assured it's just the boba that made it appear to be brown sugar inside. I sadly threw it away. I didn't taste so good. Sometimes you have to stick to basic ones going different places. But I was assuming I had a fruit drink and wasn't asked to remake to what I was asking.

Yelp
I'm not a big fan of bubble tea, but this place has the best bubble tea in my opinion. They have multiple locations, but I had mine at the Ann Arbor location. There are so many different flavor options and toppings it will make your head spin. Will definitely come back for more

Yelp
One of my favorite places to get bubble tea!! I prefer the one by the university campus because they have my favorite dessert but the bubble tea at both locations is perfect. So many options, love that you can get the fruit teas with black tea instead of just green. So many places only do green tea for the fruit teas and I don't like it. I usually get mango black tea, half sugar with tapioca and jellies. 10/10

Yelp
Since I have lived in SOCAL, I have never found a boba equal. Until now. The young men opted for : frosty pina colada with additional jellies and taro almond milk with double boba. I rolled the dice, ordering rose milk tea with half sugar and double boba. We were all pleased. We were especially pleased with our ability to modify orders and the ease of kiosk use!

Yelp
Pretty good! I ordered a large thai tea with 25% sugar and boba, and it was a little over $5. It was pretty quick and the taste was as I expected it to be. Everything is enclosed, and the crew were wearing a mask behind the enclosed space. It's a nice option to get my boba tea fix on my way into work on occasion.

Yelp
I will not come back to this place for bubble tea again. I ordered strawberry bubble tea, They used powder and it tasted terrible.

Yelp
This is my favorite bubble tea spot in Ann Arbor. They have a HUGE selection of teas it makes it a little hard to decide which one. So far my go to is a Thai milk tea with pudding. The prices for a tea is between $4-5 which I find pretty standard for drinks in Ann Arbor. I haven't tried the rolled ice cream yet but its fascinating to watch.

Yelp
Love that I can get Sweeting at another location now! Their drinks are consistently yummy, and the ice cream has a lot of customization options (on top of the delicious flavors). I like to watch them roll the ice cream right in front of you.

Yelp
Always fulfills my bubble tea cravings!! The customer service is really great, and they allow for a lot of different customization, so I can always find something I like (ie. Adjust sugar level, lactose free options, different flavors and toppings, etc.). Would definitely recommend if you're ever at the mall and in the mood for something sweet.
