Bar Tano is a cozy Italian bistro where you can enjoy elevated flavors and a welcoming vibe, perfect for casual nights out or pre-show bites.
"What It Is: A casual neighborhood Italian restaurant in Gowanus Perfect For: Eating At The Bar, Date Night, Casual Weeknight Dinner Most neighborhoods in NYC have a casual Italian place like Bar Tano, but Gowanus just happens to be the one lucky enough to have this particular version. It’s a great spot for just about any situation. When we came here around 7pm on a Monday, the bar was completely full of people drinking Happy Hour specials and sharing pastas and bruschetta. There were people on dates, a woman from the bartender’s yoga class, and groups of friends catching up over some drinks and burrata. And it just happens to be very close to The Bell House, if you need a place to eat or drink before the comedy podcast show you have tickets for. The Verdict: A good option to know about if you’re spending time in Gowanus." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg, chris stang, matt tervooren
"From the good people who gave Park Slope its favorite casual Italian bistro enoteca, Bar Toto, Bar Tano is a smaller and more alcohol-oriented outpost. Try dozens of wines, draft beers or exotic herbal cocktails at the long zinc-covered bar. They also have small plates, snacks, sandwiches and grilled pizzas. It's open at most hours, so pop in any time for a short rib panini or an elegant drink." - Hyperakt
"The Bellhouse has all kinds of shows, from live comedy podcasts to surprise Michelle Wolf and Jim Gaffigan drop-ins. It’s massive, mostly standing-room and located on a street with more warehouses than visible humans. The closest spot is Bar Tano - a casual Italian restaurant with Happy Hour deals on both food and drinks. If you’re waiting for a friend who’s (always) late and you get a text that says, “the R has a mind of its own!!” just stop in here and hang out at the bar with some pasta and a glass of wine." - Hannah Albertine
"Most neighborhoods in NYC have a casual Italian place like Bar Tano, but Gowanus just happens to be the one lucky enough to have this particular version. They have a solid Happy Hour menu and an outside area with string lights for when it’s nice outside. Come here for a date, to catch up with friends over some wine and pasta, or just to hang out with the friendly neighborhood strangers at the bar. It’s also very close to The Bell House, if you need a place to eat or drink before that comedy podcast show you have tickets for." - Hannah Albertine
