Where to Drink and Dine in Portland’s Kenton Neighborhood

"The “and” naming trend (the Ampersand Movement?) of the 2000s and 2010s seemed intended to evoke nostalgia for an era of when things were built to last — bars, restaurants, and ice cream parlors that conjured the feeling of a cast-iron skillet or fixie. Epitomizing solid, Swift and Union is the neighborhood pub carefully designed to leave no one in the party disappointed. The kitchen prepares reliable gastropub favorites like fish and chips, panko-dusted mac and cheese, and a hearty quinoa bowl. A handsome selection of beers and ciders on tap are matched by a better-than-average wine by the glass offering. Dine in the spacious dining room or along the sidewalk on picnic benches." - Nathan Williams

Where to Find Wildly Tasty Game Burgers in Portland - Eater Portland

"Ken “Zig” Naffziger opened up this Kenton neighborhood restaurant in 2015 and since then, the lamb burger has been a regular favorite. Swift and Union grinds its lamb in-house for a patty cooked medium-well, simply adorned with arugula, dijon, and pickled red onion. Swift & Union is open for indoor and outdoor service, as well as takeout." - Maya MacEvoy

It was slammed when we visited and the servers were running around but very friendly. Food came out pretty quickly and we all loved our food aside from one of us. His French dip was not very good but it may have just been an off night. My smoked pork tenderloin was very tasty, if a tad overcooked. The fish and chips were delicious and generous. The mushroom pasta was lovely. I really enjoyed the experience and look forward to coming back again.

Google
Well prepared food, drinks, and dessert. It was so much better than what I was expecting. WTG!! Great, kind, thoughtful, helpful, and patient staff and servers. Whatever you're doing, keep it up! SO, SO, SO good. I'll be back!!! I found parking to be tricky because it seems like it's street parking only. So, finding parking can be frustrating. Also, lots of 30-minute, 60-minute parking, which made the amazing experience at this restaurant, create an aspect of anxiety, which is subjective to each individual.

A friend and I were looking for a place to have lunch and we stumbled upon Swift and Union. We had been discussing that fish and chips is what we were both wanting. When we walked in to take a gander at the menu lo and behold, there were fish and chips on the menu. We were trying to decide if we would sit outside but then we just took a table inside. The environment is very casual and inviting, our wait person was prompt to acknowledge us even though they were rather busy. We both ordered the fish and chips and had a beer from their great selection of local breweries on tap. Before we knew it our food had arrived and what a pleasant surprise. We both looked at each other and said "I've never seen just one large piece of fish presented before" the fish was moist and flaky and the batter was something that I've never tasted before. It had a tangy but yet slightly sweet combo that worked perfectly with cod. The fries were house cut & prepared, the same with the coleslaw, which had the perfect amount of sesame seeds and fresh horseradish mixed with it. All in all a fine meal. Price points were excellent for what we received. We will definitely be going back and recommending to our friends.

Google
This place has an amazing happy hour. Not only the price but the serving size is well portioned. Without a doubt one of the best places in north Portland to have brunch. I recommend the eggs Benedict on a fresh home made biscuits and smoked pulled pork smothered in hollandaise sauce, yum, yum, yum! And as always having a nice clean bathroom is a must and this place has two unisex bathrooms that are roomy and clean.

Google
Solid place. Been here several times despite it being across town. It's an enjoyable, typical dinner atmosphere. Solid beer options. Food is well above average. Service was about average. Definitely worth checking out if you're near by. One small TV near the bar area. Not the best place to go watch a game but the local game might just be on with you roll in.

Google
First timer. We came in for an early lunch. It was nice and comfortable inside. I ordered the fish and chips but substitutes the chips for a salad. My son ordered a cheeseburger and it came with fries. Our lunches came out appropriately timed, not to quick and not to long. They were hot and freshly made. My fish was a real fillet with the tail blunt slightly curled up. The breading was nice and light. And the salad was had a nice oil and vinegar dressing. My sons cheeseburger was VERY tasty and a perfect medium. We will definitely have lunch here again and hopefully we’ll be able to have dinner sometime when we come to Portland again. Staff was great and the bathroom was nice, well lit, and especially clean. 👍👍👍

Google
Very solid flavors for an okay price. The menu isn't too extensive though. We got the Union Burger and the Lamb Burger. Patties could have been slightly larger, but they were cooked well. The accoutrements that came with, like the Bibb lettuce and onions, were very fresh and sweet. The decor is also nice and fits with the industrial, small town feel of the area.

Google
Great staff and management, excellent customer service. Really good food. Parking in this neighborhood is VERY challenging. Inside of restaurant is a bit small, but they have outdoor/ sidewalk dining when weather is warm.

Yelp
OK - first the ambiance and setting. It's in a great little neighborhood with free parking everywhere. Not far from the chaos of Portland and it was clean and calm. The restaurant is pretty big with good seating. We got right in even though it looked busy. Since we were meeting friends they waited to order food until we got there. However, we ordered a couple drinks first. The old fashioned was good. They had a spin on it but it wasn't so hipster that it wasn't good... We shared the steak fritas since it was a big meal and we had a ways to drive. The steak was SO good. Just melted in your mouth. The fries were hand cut steak fries and they were really good. This is getting three stars, however, because the waitress, although she was really nice, was just not attentive enough. We were there for over an hour and a half and never even got a second drink. Not only that, but, we'd ordered something else first and 30 min later she said they were out of it. So, we switched it up and had to get this. Crazy. If the service had been better it would have gotten more stars. She may have just been having an off night but it made our experience less than it should have been. Perhaps we'll try it again on our next trek through Portland.

Yelp
Decent spot to grab a burger or sandwich. Located in a residential area with no parking (drive the neighborhood and park in front of a house and walk). Walked in for an early dinner to a warm welcome and picked my table. Menu is on the small side and debated between the fish and chips and the steak and fries. In the end went with the steak. Asked for it medium rare and it was over cooked. Meat was juicy and well seasoned. It was served on top of fries that were good but not great. For dessert had the crème brûlée and it was also pretty good.

Yelp
This place had been a favorite of mine for years now. Conveniently located just blocks from my parents house, I typically eat here a couple times each visit. Their happy hour is incredible between the quality of the food and the prices. You can't go wrong with any of their burgers, however, the steak frites are still number one in my book. A swift kick (their version of an old fashioned) is a must on any visit. Be sure to check them out if you're ever in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Great staff, great food, great value! They have updated their menu for 2023. A couple items have been taken off, a couple items have been added. I've tried several things on the menu and nothing has disappointed. My favorites are the Philly cheesesteak, lamb burger / goat cheese, and fish & chips (I recommend a side of the garlic aioli for dipping). This is one of the few Portland restaurants that has RC Cola (brings back childhood memories).

Yelp
My friend and I shared the lamb burger and fries and the fried brussel sprouts. Service was friendly. We sat outside as it was a nice day. It took about 40 mins to get our food on an early Sunday afternoon. Other than that, it was great. Lamb burger was moist and delicious -- cooked properly. Fries were crispy. Aioli was super garlicy and light. Brussel sprouts were yummy and smokey and fried. I will definitely be back but maybe not on a Sunday.

Yelp
Having good restaurant reviews is crucial these days. It is not just making our decision to pick one easier, it is also helping the restaurant be more successful. It makes me wonder why owners do not have their staff represent them better. Our Masonic group stopped in after a meeting. The food was decent. The service is par. Atmosphere is chilled and cool but the staff seems a little too laid back. There isn't any one thing I can put my finger on, just matter of fact and why are we bothering you attitude. Typically the server would have conversations about menu items selection choices. Today it was flat. I would give them another try just to see if it was a bad day versus the general style of management.

Yelp
Overall it was a very cute place for an early dinner/late lunch. We initially went there for the steak frites as that was what we were craving. The fries were delicious but the steak was more on the drier side. For the price it was an affordable steak frites order. We also got kale salad which was pretty good, can't go wrong with a salad. Service was good, although it did take us about 30/40+ mins to get the steak frites.

Yelp
The lamb burger I ordered was better than I imagined- very tender, flavorful, and fulfilling. The aioli was amazing! Great balance of acidity, saltiness, and other flavors. I will def order it again. The fries look really dark and scared me at first - I thought they were burnt. But the taste was pretty good actually. It would be a lot better if it weren't that dark (maybe old oil?).

Yelp
Been there a handful of times and it's always good. Sometimes it's great. Most recently had burgers which were both excellent, cooked properly and served on lovely billowy buns. Loved the fries. They had a pork soup not long ago that was positively amazing... jam packed with flavor. Had a lemon corn soup recently... it was just okay... it was so thick it ate like grits opposed to a soup. Fantastic icy boozy coffee drink... the bolognaise is delish.... could use a tad more sauce in the sauce/pasta ratio. Servers are always pleasant and it has a cute ambiance.

Yelp
Since the pandemic, menu choices halved, prices significantly raised. Service is spot on and it's an enjoyable place.

Yelp
Yummy cocktails, good food, friendly service. A good place to grab a drink and dinner/lunch

Yelp
Salmon Burger! Local ales! Good people! Kenton is such a great area and this spot might be the best for lunch, dinner and a beer.
google avatar

Yelp
The return of the Mac burger was pretty good. There was too much meat to the bread ratio, but the sauces were good and gave me a slight hint of a Big Mac. The fish and chip is always fun to get since it's just one giant fish. The fish meat is tender and has a good breading flavor. The tartar sauce isn't too overpowering so the fish still comes through. There is a no mask with vaccination proof protocol but they don't really check if you walk in with no mask.
google avatar

Yelp
Neighborhood staple. Used to have an amazing burger, now it's pretty okay. I will say don't order a cocktail if it sounds strange. Stick to what you know and then it's great!
google avatar

Yelp
Don't come on Sunday brunch. kitchen is not adequately staffed and there is two people staffed for a full restaraunt and bar. Long wait times for food, wrong food given etc
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Not sure how good the food is, but the server just looked at our family of four sitting there and proceeded to serve several other tables that came in after us without even saying hi. We waited about 10 minutes and left to go down the street where we felt welcome.
google avatar

Travis T.

Yelp
We came here after another restaurant had to cancel our reservation due to an outbreak. I called ahead about a reservation, but it's first come, first serve. We arrived at 6pm on a Friday night and several tables were open. For drinks, I started with their special $7 cocktail. I don't think I've been able to find a cocktail for that cheap in Portland when it wasn't HH. It was solid, but I liked their smokey (?) mezcal drink even more. For entrees my wife got the union burger with a side kale Caesar and I got the steak & fries. I LOVED everything. The steak was very tender with great flavor. The fries were cooked to perfection with the perfect amount of salt. The kale Caesar was perfectly coated with dressing and the croutons that tasted like garlic bread were fantastic. I would order everything again. We finished with the cannolis. Not the best I've ever had, but still very good and I would recommend getting them. We will definitely be returning to Swift & Union.

Yelp
Amazing food & service! Love the weekly specials & happy hour! Recently tried brunch as well & enjoyed that too! Love that this is a place I can walk & enjoy locally.

Yelp
Swift and Union: decent burgers and gluten free choices. A friendly neighborhood hangout! Good cocktails also.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and a great spot you should try in the Kenton neighborhood in PDX! I've alway had a great experience here.

Yelp
Great neighborhood place. Nice happy hour. Great fish and chips, burgers and more. See you there

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would. Worst service I've ever had ANYWHERE in Portland. We were told not to order at the bar - quiet rudely may I add - because there were two servers "running around". Not only did we BARELY get checked on during the 35 minutes we were there, when my friend inquired about her food taking 15 minutes longer than everyone else's food, the server remarked that they weren't sure what was happening with her meal, and that they "have other stuff to do". If you like being shit on, definitely make a quick stop here! We'll never be returning.

Yelp
Super delicious food, the fish and chips was the best my mom had ever had in her whole life, plus it was MASSIVE. Wedge salad was had a really light blue cheese dressing which I thought was really nice for a hot summer day. Tasted so good too. Everything we ate was delicious and special in its own way. Highly recommended, will be coming back!

Yelp
Delicious food in and great service in an open room cafe setting in Kenton. I only went here for lunch but the burger and fries I had could've easily been a dinner meal. Yum!
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoyed Swift and Union ... and Jennifer. Her name was Jennifer. Her role was server. As in, "server of the year" goes to Jennifer at Swift & Union in Portland, OR. The only thing better than a great recommendation from a server at a newly discovered restaurant is two dynamite recommendations ... like the warm, lightly-battered, and oh-so-thick-n-flaky Fish & Chips or the tender, tasty & terrific Pork Belly Banh Mi. * Fish and Chips ($18 - 5 stars) Flakiest ever! And, served piping-hot! Take-out is not an option because this fried most-flaky-of-flakies fish is meant to be eaten and not shared ... immediately ... with the House Tartar Sauce. Don't get distracted by the soft Fries or Fennel Cabbage Slaw. * Pork Belly Banh Mi ($14 - even better than 5 stars) Today's menu in heaven features: Soft 'n savory Pork Belly in a fluffy Fresh Baguette topped with Pickled Carrots and Daikon, Cilantro, Jalapeno, and Maggie's Mayo. It's spring which means cocktails are in season like the awesome April Showers Cocktail ($10 - 4 stars) with Orange-infused Gin, Lemon, Egg Whites, Pamplemousse Rose, Honey, and Creme de Violette. It was the natural precursor to a marvelous May Flowers Cocktail ($9 - 4.5 stars) with Vodka, Lemon, Elderflower, Rosé, and Orange Blossom. Both drinks were perfect to toast Jennifer ... for her obvious experience, speedy service, and, most importantly, recommendations for the very best of Swift and Union: the Pork Belly Banh Mi and the Fish & Chips.

Yelp
Needed a quick snack while out urban exploring. Stopped in here and ordered the steak frites. Oh wow was it delicious. The meat was tenderly cooked with a wonderful aioli. The fries paired well with the meat. I liked the ketchup it was much sweeter than what I am accustomed too. I liked that it was different.

Yelp
We were looking for a spot close to the University of Portland. Street parking wasn't too bad for a Thursday night. We also didn't have to wait long for a party of 6. Inside had warm and cozy feel. Pleasantly surprised by this place which was mostly burgers but they had salads and other apps. Most of us got burgers which were very good, but the fries were a little salty and limp. I do like it when they're made from real potatoes but I was hoping for something with a little more crisp. Good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. Would go again when we are in town.

Melinda S.

Yelp
Food and atmosphere was AMAZING , cute little bar decorated in a cow theme . Service was horrible . Slow and rude !
google avatar

Yelp
Had the house made black bean burger with the soup of the day (carrot ginger) and it was divine. Good flavor with a kick to it (The burger) with a nice brioche bun. I love having the option of soup instead of fries! Cool staff, too. Recommended!

Yelp
Has stayed consistently good throughout many visits. It would be nice if the menu could be expanded a bit, but it is not easy times for restaurants. Great music selection when I've been in. The broccolini and the asparagus are top notch.
google avatar

Devin V.

Yelp
Now thats a tasty burger! Came by on a casual Thursday night during happy hour. Had a burger and fries, and a brew. Super great deals during happy hour! Really like the cozy retro vibe, and the food was awesome too. We live right down the street, so we will be back soon!

Yelp
Cute restaurant for sure! Got a to-go chicken sandwich today. Meh. It comes with a deep-fried frozen chicken pellet that is flavorless, which is not helped by their std toppings. The fries soggy and overcooked. Well, the bar looks impressive and maybe the other food is good ??

Yelp
The wife and I went here last night for date night after wanting to go for a long time. The ambiance and atmosphere was inviting; sort of an "upscale casual" feel. The service was great. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and gave us recommendations. For drinks, my wife got the PNW Mule & I got the Swift Kick based on the waitresses' suggestion. My wife liked her drink okay and mine was great. We started with the mussels, of which there was a healthy portion. They were served with a red sauce which had pieces of sausage and onion in it. My wife liked the sauce more than I. Overall they were okay; nothing wrong with them but not spectacular. It comes down to personal preference on the sauce. For dinner, my wife got the crispy chicken with cauliflower puree, seared kale and a wine reduction. We both thought the wine sauce was too sweet. The chicken was cooked well and the puree was good. The portion seemed a tad small for the price. I had a hard time choosing between the pulled pork sandwich and fish and chips, and went with the latter based on the waitress' suggestion. The fish was cooked well and there was a healthy portion. I prefer mine crispier on the outside, these weren't. The fries sat below the fish and were a bit soft/soggy. The coleslaw was a huge hit with my wife, while I hated it and couldn't eat it. We both thought the tartar was good but a little too thin of a consistency. It tasted like they make their own ketchup which is cool. All in all, our impression was positive mainly because of the service and atmosphere. The drinks were good with slightly above average food. For the portions and quality, I'd say prices were reasonable. We'd go back but we probably won't go out of our way.

Yelp
Been coming to S&U for years and I still love it. There were some post pandemic hiccups w service and quality, but that appears to have ironed out and S&U is back on their game. Great burgers, salad dressings are subtle and delic, and the staff are attentive and sweet. Cheers to you! Keep up the good work.

Yelp
Such a cool find in Kenton. Really great food, really good cocktails. Such a clean and cool environment. I loveeee the decor and ambiance of this place. The workers are incredibly nice and always in a lovely mood! 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed Swift & Union. We came here after not being able to get served elsewhere with a party of 12. We were seated within minutes and had excellent service throughout our meal. Many of our group had burgers, while others had chicken sandwiches, and salads. Overall the food was very good. If I lived in Portland, I'd go out of my way to go to Swift & Union again.

Sha S.

Yelp
Glad we stopped in for lunch. The fish (& chips ) was delicious. It was served on top of the french fries which allowed the fish to release some of the oil without sitting in it and getting soggy. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I really wanted to eat a few fries, but too oily - Not a complaint. There was such a big portion of fish I couldn't have finished all of it. Can't wait to come back and try the "Sunday gravy". We had a relaxing & casual meal, thanks!
google avatar

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot, hearty meals, delicious cocktails, always a reliable go to. Great place to meet friends.

Tricia S.

Yelp
This place always knocks it out of the park! I've been here a few times and usually take business guests to lunch here for a "Portland experience". Everything is delicious! Steak Bahn Mi sandwich, fish and chips, burger with bacon jam ... all of it. Yesterday I had their salmon main dish - good sized piece of fish with crisp potatoes, grilled asparagus, and Meyer lemon sauce. Each bite was perfectly seasoned, potatoes was soft inside and crisp outside, and the salmon was juicy and moist but crisp on the outside. It gets busy so I advise going early ... we try to show up near opening (11:30a) to avoid the crowds and wait. Staff is friendly but can sometimes be slow - because the place fills up and there are only 2-3 wait staff.

Yelp
Creative & tasty drinks, flavorful food. Love having restaurants like these in N Portland, we need more!
google avatar

Yelp
Upscale pub in North Portland with fancy drinks and an upscale twist on comfort foods. The service was great. I shared the falafel sandwich with a friend, which was decent. And I very much enjoyed the Marion berry drink. We sat outside to be Covid safer. Not my usual neck of the woods, but a good place to return to.
google avatar

Randall T.

Yelp
Pretty decent. Good beer, nice vibe and a bit off the beaten path. We had dinner here and started with clams. They were prepared nicely. I had the pork belly Sammy (because why not?) my girl had the Salmon. All was very tasty and the fries were perfect Only reason I didn't give all 5 stars was the juxtaposition of music between the main dining area and the kitchen staff. Only comment would be both choices were good, but pick one ;)

Yelp
Update #2 I love this sometimes imperfect place because they do get a lot right. The salmon, oh that crisp exterior, moist interior salmon, is always pitch perfect. As an entree with polenta and grilled asparagus or atop the best-ever Caesar salad, this is my dish. The steak and frites are consistently good, and the kitchen seems to be rallying from whatever change hit them a month or so back. We get the appeal of outside seating but can't help noticing the service suffers when we sit outside. No problem--we can sit inside and enjoy the level of service we've come to expect from S&U. We're glad, and we will still voice our love for the appetizer cauliflower--chant with me, people: bring it back! Bring it back! Lowering my rating for my beloved S&U isn't an easy truth, but my last two visits warrant an update. --slow, slow kitchen --overly salty food. It's still well prepared but now salty as hell --the crispy chicken now features hind quarter and it isn't crispy --the service is inattentive, distracted and less engaging than our previous experiences I'm not sure what's different with S&U, but I hope they make adjustments and resume their excellent standard that once captured my five-star raves. Former Swift and Union is a solid five star experience for us after many satisfying visits: -reasonable prices with reasonable portions -warm atmosphere that's well tended, clean, artful -consistently good service -the cauliflower appetizer--it changes from a sweet undertone to savory, and it's always wonderful -the menu is interesting and manageable; we've enjoyed everything from salads to sandwiches to fish and chips to steak frites. -the outside seating on warm days (the service is still great) -we don't waste food here, and we don't overeat. Swift and Union has perfected a human scaled meal. Don't love crowded intimacy or waiting for a table? Arrive around 8 pm--the kitchen is still primed for excellence, and you'll have a choice of several comfortable ta This is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. Consistently on point with a satisfying, interesting menu, Swift and Union delivers on food, service, and experience. The salads with perfectly prepared salmon are my favorite picks, but the fish and chips and steak frites are equally satisfying. I've been here for sunny sidewalk seating for late lunches or early happy hours. I've been here on crowded evenings--sometimes at a table, sometimes at the bar. It's all comfortable, and we've always received perceptive, well-paced service. The service, the brilliantly prepared comfort foods make this place feel intimate and romantic even on crowded nights--it never seems too noisy to hear. That's a feat. We've yet to be here for breakfast or brunch, but that's just a matter of time, especially since they offer bacon jam.

Yelp
Salty fries and my union burger came with so much mustard. Overall an Okay burger. Union Burger

Yelp
love this spot, good fries, burgers, fish and chips, the reason no 5 stars is please have ranch available for customers

d g.

Yelp
We walked in with a notice on the door, fryer is broken so no fries or fish and chips. So they offered us salad or soup, with really doesn't flow with a lamb burger. Other than that, sandwich burgers and drinks were ok. Waitress was nicely organized to up-sale, but well informed. Ambiance was ok, bathroom was clean, lots of local walk-ins. Funny, we sat in the corner close to the street and saw homeless guy picking inside our car for smash & grab. Just had to press my alarm to get him away. Lamb Burger

Yelp
My girlfriend and I were visiting from out of town and needed some lunch, so we found Swift and Union through Yelp and saw it was not too far from where we were staying. We came at a pretty quiet time so it was not busy and we were seated immediately. They have a fully stocked bar with many different types of liquors and spirits, as well as a short cocktail, beer, and wine menu. We both ordered the "Sealed with a Kiss" which tasted similar to a Cosmo but had cinnamon in it. It was an interesting twist, but we both really enjoyed it. Their overall menu was quite small. For our main entrees, I had the fish and chips and my girlfriend had a burger. The fish was one large piece of white fish served with seasoned fries. The fish was flakey, juicy, and not too oily. I also enjoyed the fries that came with a creamy dill sauce. My girlfriend enjoyed her burger as well. Our waitress was friendly and we had a great time overall. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I came during happy hour and it was pleasantly warm and cozy after being in the cold. Ordered the homemade broccoli soup, a burger... very delicious! Also has a great selection of local beers. Will be back!

Yelp
This restaurant is so warm & inviting. Everyone that works here is great! Delicious food
