The Best Restaurants and Bars Along Lake Superior’s North Shore in Minnesota | Eater Twin Cities

"Sydney’s Custard has rebuilt in downtown Grand Marais following a devastating fire. The new spot serves the same flaky wood-fired pizza and overflowing cups of thick, creamy custard." - Joy Summers

Support local businesses! Enjoy a brief hike followed with on the waterfront views from this hidden gem. Worth the hike up the stairs to view the bays and chill with a delicious frozen custard. Fresh air!! I drove up from the cities where air quality from Canadian fires still warn air quality. This place is a breath fresh air. Photo taken after hours just before sunset- most places closed early Wednesday night.

The crust on the pizza in this restaurant is so thin you feel like you’re eating a cracker. And because it’s so thin, it has the same texture as a cracker. Fine, but to also have them be $25 for the tiny pie you receive? No thanks. It’s so thin they don’t even give you a pizza box, they give you a paper bag. They know it’s thin too. Someone was even looking at the pizza menu while we were walking out and we warned them how thin it is and to consider going elsewhere. I think they walked away after. Atmosphere gets 5 stars though. Seating right on the deck with a view to Lake Superior! It’s just too bad they spent all their money on their rooftop deck that they had to ration the dough for their pizza to make extra margins when selling to their customers. Also I don’t know why, but the mushrooms on their pizza tasted weird. Like they went bad or something. We were so hungry after this that we walked to Hungry Hippie Tacos and got food there. That place is worth going to.

The apple Gorgonzola pizza was delicious. My fiancé said it was one of the most flavorful pizzas she’s ever had. I agree with her. The view from their upper deck is the best from any place to eat in Grand Marais!

The price at this place is absolutely ridiculous. My girlfriends and I got ice cream after a long hike and when we got our treats they were already melting, like the ice cream had was sitting out for too long. The service was just so so and the people working in the food stall were engaging it way too much PDA for our liking. I think we would have been happier with getting ice cream from the grocery store.

We ordered 3 custard items-2 single scoop sundaes which were made like shakes and 1 vanilla shake. Our total was $30-I couldn’t believe it. The custard was good but not worth that price. The service wasn’t awesome either.

Great roof deck views and looks like more to come when indoor seating is completed. Margherita pizza was so-so. Crust was too thin for a wood fired oven leaving a carbon charred crust where there should have been occasional blackening. Marinated tomato, basil, and cheese were too scant. Like they were trying to cut too many corners for the $22 price tag. I know my pizza. I used to live in Italy and was in Rome, Naples, and Sicily last month! I understand they are recovering from a fire, but they have a ways to go

Great little spot right on the lake for pizza. The pizza is actually good wood fired pizza which is increasingly hard to find in the mid west. There is picnic tables on the beach and roof to eat at. Bring your own drinks because a can of pop is $4!

A nice place to stop while in the area! The owners are very nice and have the cutest dog as well. The homemade pizza was like no other.
