The 15 Best Restaurants in Lawrence, Home of the University of Kansas

"Nothing caps off a day in downtown Lawrence like a visit to Sylas and Maddy’s, a hometown ice cream shop since 1997. Flavors like Rock Choc Jayhawk (sweet cream ice cream with brownies and fudge) and Mahomes Magic (butter pecan, chocolate flakes, coconut, and graham crackers) infuse the sweet treat with a bit of KU pride. In addition to crafting original ice cream flavors, Sylas and Maddy’s makes fresh waffle cones from scratch daily." - Erin Socha

The smell is a little strange when you walk in but don’t let that deter you. The ice cream is delicious with some unique flavor combinations. There are a couple dairy free options (an orange sorbet and a raspberry sorbet) and a wide range of toppings. The staff was really friendly and they allow samples. You can’t see the descriptions of the flavors until you get to the counter, so my only suggestion would be to have a menu with the descriptions available. It might make the line move faster!

Prices are good. Flavor range is fine. There should be tap water or a water station. Asked for water and there was no bottled water and apparently serving tap water in Lawrence is a health code violation? Absurd in 2025. My only other issue is the max or two flavor tastings per customer. Maybe do small samples so we can try the weirder flavors before we commit. This is 2025.

Best ice-cream shop in Lawrence. Always busy and super charming. They make their own waffle cones, huge selection of flavors the “classics” that are kept year round and other seasonal ones. Free samples to help you find the flavor you’re wanting.

Not the first time visiting Sylas and Maddy's. Always a wait due to a line of ice cream aficionados. The list of uncommon names of flavors can seem overwhelming but due to the line, you have a few minutes to figure out your choice. The staff are a great mix of patience to help you make your decision, then quickness to fill your order. The place is clean and just the right amount of light. The art on the wall provides interesting interpretations of the different flavors. I prefer the blueberry cheesecake, but the toasted coconut was pretty good. You also have various classics available as well. So, if you're in the mood for something tried and true, or feeling a bit adventurous, Sylas and Maddy's has ice cream for almost everyone. One note: if you have food allergies then this is probably not the place for you. The scoops are reused so the ice creams can cross contaminate, if you want to call it that. They make this clear with signage at the front of the order line.

If you're looking for fresh ice cream with tons of new fun flavors and your favorite classics, look no further. Try a melt in your mouth waffle cone as well. Best ice cream, hands down.

Great one cream. Friendly staff. They had so many choices it was difficult to choose. I with i has been more hungry when we went because I would have ordered two flavors. I really enjoyed the waffle cone i ordered. It was so good I finished it even though I was already full.
