The food is great unless it has a sharp little plastic piece in it. This restaurant used to be one of my favorite breakfast places. We would come everytime we were in town. This morning while eating the pot roast skillet I bit on a hard piece of plastic. When I told the waitress, Missy, that it was in my food, all she said was “I’ll let the cooks know.” There was no apologies of any sort and I had to pay for food that had a sharp piece of plastic in it. I am very dissatisfied with the service here.

Such a little gem! Went here a few times while visiting. First time, got the cranberry turkey sandwich, I substituted cheddar for Swiss and it was good. Also got the BLT and that was good as well. Cheese curds, fantastic! My sons got cheeseburgers, my daughter got French toast sticks and cinnamon French toast. Interesting those are sold by the piece, lol. My husband got a Philly cheesesteak. Every single time we got donuts and danish and cookies and boy were they delicious! Homemade right there. Super nice staff, even ones who just started.

Syl's is such an awesome place. The pasties were so good. Breakfast with the blueberry pancakes and syrup along with the garbage omelette were fantastic. The Pannu Kakkua which is a Finnish baked pancake was awesome! The chicken cheddar jalapeno soup was delicious. The giant cinnamon roll was so light. The best we ever had. Syl's is a very busy place, despite that, the service is tremendous. Thank you to all the servers and your beautiful smiles. We appreciate you! Syl's is a true gem and can't wait to return.

Amazing selection of food from Pizza to pasties and pastries. Excellent service for a very reasonable price.

Excellent find on our travels through the U.P. Started with the cheese curds and they were the best or close to the best we've ever had -- and we're from WI. The food was also fantastic: cheeseburger and beer battered fries, garbage omelet with sourdough toast, and a turkey/swiss/tomato/lettuce sandwich on cranberry wild rice bread with beer battered fries. Food came quickly and my daughter followed it up with the best danish ever. Cozy atmosphere. Our server, Hannah, was a delight.

Google
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is known for the pasty. I tried a lot of pasties in the U.P., and my personal favorite was found at Syl's. My kids had a cheese pizza and a cheeseburger slider. Syl's is very economical and reasonably priced, and all the food I've tried is absolutely delicious. If ever you find yourself in this area, do yourself a favor and give Syl's a try. You won't be disappointed.

Google
Amazing Restaurant with amazing food and great service. We snowmobiled there and they provided all of our stuff needed to wrap our leftovers

First time here. I will definitely be back. Our food was delicious. And bought a bunch of bakery items to go.

Yelp
We stopped in on a whim hungry and tired after a day hiking in the Porkies. Boy, are we glad we did! We had the Syls Special pizza and it was delicious! Loaded with toppings, lots of cheese and wonderful crust! Saw a box of their cinnamon rolls and picked them up too! They were fresh, just sweet enough and there were 9 good sized rolls in the box. Price for both the pizza and cinnamon rolls was a little over $28. Our server was a middle aged woman who greeted us warmly and treated us as "one of the locals". A definite yes if you're looking for good food, good service in a cute cafe!

Yelp
Amazing service and extremely generous proportions. Highly recommend this restaurant very large food selection and many choices to choose from. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing and gives you a small town vibe.

Yelp
Great food, staff, service. Small town cafe, lots of variety, breakfast, lunch, pizza, bakery goods, a wide variety. My friends had pizza and loved it. It's a simple place, and the food is good, mostly domestic offerings. Not expensive. Fast kitchen that remembers a variety of orders. Recommended.

Jody K.

Yelp
I was in Otonagon and asked the hotel owner for restaurant suggestions. He said that Syl's Cafe was one of the more popular places, and after looking over the menus that he had, I decided that it sounded good. I ordered the turkey cranberry sandwich. It was really good, and kind of an unusual combination. I loved the cranberry sauce that was on the side. I also got a breakfast pizza to go. It was also delicous -- both hot and cold! The service was also friendly, efficent and good. Syl's is a nice, small town restaurant that I'd definitely go back to if I was in the area again.

Yelp
After a long day hiking in the Porkies we stopped by Sly's. Our waitress, Kristy, was so sweet and kind and working her butt off. We needed a yummy filling meal and what's exactly what we got. I ordered the pasty and my hubby ordered the turkey sandwich because Kristy recommended it. Both were so good and we cleaned our plates. We had such a great experience that we decided we had to stop by for breakfast. So we came back bright and early, and Kristy was there again serving up with a smile. We both had the cinnamon French toast and it was scrumptious. We also ordered a few donuts to enjoy on our 6.5hr drive. You absolutely need to stop by Sil's when you stay in Ontonagon!!

Bob I.

Yelp
Everything here is excellent, including the servers. They seem a bit shorthanded so it is slow when the place is busy. We stayed in town for a week and were here nearly every day. The only negative is the donuts look amazing but are not great IMO. No crunch and they're soft and doughy.

Vijayanarayanan S.

Yelp
Cute breakfast spot in the middle of nowhere, Michigan. We stopped here on our way to Porcupine mountains The food was plenty and couldn't finish them all. Tried the pasties here. Definitely good food!

Melissia M.

Yelp
Cute little spot in a small town. Staff was friendly and service was quick even though they were busy. We ordered pizza "Syl's Special" I thought it was pretty amazing. They loaded it with toppings, don't mind the half eaten pizza in the pic. If you are up this way and you love pizza, it's worth a stop and they also offer other menu options if pizza isn't your thing. They offer donuts, pies and other baked goods, which I plan to get some to go.

Alison B.

Yelp
I had my first ever pasty here which it was absolute delicious. I now can say I understand the hype over it. The service was good and this restaurant wasn't crowded at all despite it being peak dinner hours. The seating was nice and overall the restaurant was pretty quiet. Would recommend this hidden gem to anyone.

Cheryl C.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant in the small village of Ontonagon. It is the heartbeat of the town. Good food and friendly servers. Ate there every day for 5 days. Nice selection too. Enjoyed their breakfast English muffin sandwich platter and Mello Yello. Takeout pizza and salad was good too.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Food was good but we had a group of 8 that ordered lunch and we waited forever to get our food and many other people came in and ate then left before we even received our food. We had one person that never even received her food until we were ready to leave and she had to take it to go. Then when one member of our group asked to pay their bill she was screamed at by one of the waitresses loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear saying that they were busy and they don't have time for that. A simple kind response of we are busy but will be with you in a moment would have been fine. We totally understand that things can get busy and stressful but bitter responses such as this is not necessary. We will not be going back to or recommending this restaurant.

Amanda Y.

Yelp
One stop shop for all kinds of taste buds. Service is friendly and food is wonderful. Love the pics on the walls too. Shows off the beautiful area all around. Thank you!

ronald j.

Yelp
Food is great, great service, we ate at Syl's for breakfast and supper, breakfast was delicious, skillet with eggs , ham, hash browns and hollandaise sauce, supper was Pasty and coleslaw and it was good. I would recommend Syl's if in the area.

Blake T.

Yelp
I had the French toast with a side of Ham. I thought the sour dough bread had a good thickness and texture. The dinner also has a fresh bakery case (photo taken during dinner the night before) in which I had a blue berry Pastry which was phenomenal. Must stop restaurant

Melissa W.

Yelp
We had the pasty with gravy and it was delicious! Then ordered a pizza to go! The service was very friendly. Cute restaurant. Mini Pasties

Iaan H.

Yelp
Typically I review dive bars, an occasional restaurant, and now and again somewhere decent. This place was most certainly decent, if not excellent. If you're a fan of Cafes, this is your stop. The staff are fast, friendly, and so are the prices and food. My fiancé got the French Toast, and I got the Philly Cheesesteak, I don't know why, but neither of us were disappointed. I absolutely hate mushrooms, but ya know what, they were great in there. The French Toast was made with handmade dough and it was awesome too. Highly recommend a stop if you're in town.

Carston C.

Yelp
Very good breakfast. The skillets came out great. It might take a little longer to get your food on the weekend but well worth the wait.

Becca W.

Yelp
This place was super busy, we did not dine in just got carry out. Got pizza, pepperoni stuffed breadsticks and onion rings. Pizza was delicious but honestly the stuffed breadsticks was even better than the pizza. Onion rings were exactly how I liked them thin and crispy soooo good great flavor. You can tell it's a small mom and pop shop so happy we found it, service was good also.

Amanda B.

Yelp
So glad to find such a gem only 10 miles from our hotel (AmerInn, Ontonagon). Hubs and I split a "mini" Pasty, which was as big as the other "normal sized" pasties we've had before. Pasty was good, but they don't serve it with gravy, that flavor and sauce was what was missing for me--still had a great flavor. Husband had the BBQ Cobb salad minus the BBQ sauce, and it was delicious! Chicken, bacon and hard boiled eggs in this salad was the perfect protein after a day of hiking. I enjoyed a personal pizza (and stolen bites of salad!) We got a slice of chocolate pie to go, and WE WILL BE BACK soon to sample their homemade doughnuts and their breakfast menu!

Justin M.

Yelp
We just had lunch there. I wanted to love it as online I heard nothing but positive things. It was honestly the worst experience of my life. We arrived and got sat. We got beverages and didn't get an order taken. We sat with menus waiting and our server got a large table minutes later. They got the large table drinks and took their food order. It was enough time for one drink to be entirely empty and placed by the edge of the table. No one offered to fill the cup. Finally, a girl server came over to take our order and we were advised the other guy was training. That's all fine and dandy, but then the other servers should be following up or he should be shadowing to see how things are done. My daughter finally walked up to a server and physically asked for a refill. Not once our entire visit when a cup was empty were we asked if we wanted a refill. We ordered an appetizer and I watched it sit in the window for over ten minutes. It came with all of our food, except my husbands order was forgotten. The kids popcorn chicken looked pathetically small. We frequent restaurants and this is not acceptable. There was about ten fries and five tiny popcorn chickens like it was the end of the bag. My husband was livid at this time and it only got worse. His cup was empty and sat empty for ten minutes until he walked to the bathroom to get water as all the servers were chatting. The restaurant was not busy by any means. We got our check and we were charged for cheese curds which we never ordered. I had to wait for our slip to be adjusted. I am a server myself and I try to be very lenient with training people, but overall everything about this service was horrifying. We left the restaurant and went to a local business and actually got to chatting the owner and they said recently they've had terrible service as well. I'd be addressing internal service and training. Leaving the new guy to fend for himself and not filling drinks for them or running food for another server when it's sitting there is rude. Help one another. Repeat customers are what pay your bills. When you're losing the locals as well, there's issues. Cute little local vibe, but other than that, we were highly disappointed.

Melissa K.

Yelp
Great little mom & pop restaurant. Great food for a reasonable price Service was prompt.

Northern M.

Yelp
Great food great service they do their best to make everything from scratch, the soup search terrific. We love to support our local business wonderful pasties great breakfast.

Cody R.

Yelp
The food is amazing, service is amazing, and the ambiance is also amazing. I live in Ontonagon and go here almost every week and it is always amazing.

Andy K.

Yelp
We ordered takeout while in town for a quick weekend vacation. I went inside to get the order and had to wait a few minutes, but the staff was great about it. The indoor décor is really cool and the menu is pretty large, so there's something for everyone. They hang paintings and photos on the walls from local artists and photographers that you can buy, so that was awesome to see. There's not really a waiting area, so if the place looks busy, be prepared to mill around outside due to cramped quarters at the front of the place. The food itself was great, and highly recommended. When we are back in Ontonagon, we'll be coming back here to dine in-person. When I picked my food up around 6p, it was nearly full and the crowd seemed lively and like they enjoyed the food.

Marc M.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast spots! Loved every bite. Homemade sourdough bread French Toast. Special recipe sausage patties. Good folks in the kitchen and waiting tables. They really made it a delicious, memorable breakfast!

Sarah C.

Yelp
Consistently good food and friendly service. I've never had a bad meal and it's fairly priced.

Amber H.

Yelp
The food was delicious and didn't take too long to come out. The service was not great, we sat down and the lady that knew we just arrived randomly left. So no one knew to serve us. So a guy came in and after asking someone to serve us this guy came over. He did not seem happy to be there and was pretty rude to a kid at the table by us. It was a pleasant place to be besides that. There were pretty pictures on the walls and in the back room it wasn't too loud.

Hue M.

Yelp
Place has a a good atmosphere and good service. Was a nice spot to snowmobile to and warm up. Decent food.

Trent T.

Yelp
Passing through the area for work, I found this place on yelp. Very small town family run feel. As you can see from what I ordered, I wasn't looking for a low carb meal LOL- Food was great, service was friendly, and I got my food in a reasonable amount of time.

Corinna L.

Yelp
10/10 would recommend. Food was excellent and service was great. I got the Cinnamon Swirl French toast with eggs and bacon and cleaned my plate. Two breakfast meals, 2 coffees and it was only $20. Will definitely stop by again if we're ever back up this way.

Ali A.

Yelp
Stopped by while visiting the porcupine mountains. Food was delicious and a great price point. Service was a little bit slow, probably due to the fact that there were a lot of pick up orders taking place too. On your way out make sure to grab a cake donut!!

L S.

Yelp
Breakfast was served up quickly, by our friendly server. Quickly made recommendation of favorites, quick to fill the coffee cups and while slammed on a Tuesday morning, she made the experience better. Cinnamon French toast were four delicious swirls, a side of crisp bacon and scrambled eggs. A lot of homemade breads, cookies, donuts and tasty delectable sugary treats we purchased after breakfast. Great prices. Grind their offee on site and it was delicious. Wonderful gem in this town.

Erin K.

Yelp
Delicious food, good portions, and great prices! We all had breakfast for dinner and loved it. Fiesta skillet and cinnamon French toast were our favorites. Kathy our server was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Yuka B.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant and bakery in the middle of nowhere. The waiter was very attentive and the food was good.

Christine H.

Yelp
This place has a cute and spacious outdoor seating area. Their prices are also impeccable. The fish and chips was very yummy. It had an interesting batter to it, which made it very crunchy. The pasty, however, was kind of dry and bland. The pasta dish was pretty basic, but still good.

James M.

Yelp
The busiest restaurant in town, chockful of locals. Our waitress forgot about our order, but it was really busy and she was very apologetic--she even offered a free doughnut. Great pasties, and I came back the next day for doughnuts and coffee, both of which were top notch.

Debra S.

Yelp
Great food! The best breakfast we have had in the UP. I had the pot roast plate, heaven on a plate. Only down point was the coffee.

Freyhan D.

Yelp
This was a really nice, and surprisingly busy, little Cafe in the town of Ontanogan. Got a pasty to snack on, and a bearclaw as a sweet treat. Neither one was bad or anything, but nothing extravagant to write home about. I found for the cost of the items, the pasty was quite small, and the bearclaw was a decent size.

Thomas B.

Yelp
Great food and service. Clean and pleasant place to eat. They have a great pasty and gravy is available for us trolls. (People who live below the bridge).

Adam J.

Yelp
Syl's is a classic diner that's open all day. I can't speak to the dinner food, but the breakfast is what you'd expect from a diner. It's seat yourself and on the weekends, this place can get packed, especially when people are traveling through. The food is good, nothing over the top. The blueberry pancakes tasted like blueberry pancakes and the skillet is a skillet. This is a cafe, but it also serves as a bakery, which is probably the best part about it from the bread and pies and whatever else that's sweet. You can also get cinnamon raisin bread on the side instead of plain/wheat. Everything else is run of the line for a diner. I got a frozen pasty to go and if it's amazing maybe I'll push Syl's to five stars.

Pamela G.

Yelp
Pasties we're great and huge! Hot roast beef sandwich was delicious and came with real mashed potatoes. Servers were on their toes. A great experience!

Mazen A.

Yelp
Great spot in the middle of nowhere. Friendly staff. Quick service. Outstanding food. Several dessert options including several home made pies.

Amanda P.

Yelp
We came from NY and actually considered extending our time in Ontonagon just so that we could eat here again. Magical. Every single thing we got was amazing I don't think you could go wrong with anything. Service was so friendly and helpful. The three of us got: Pasty- never had one before so take this with a grain of salt but we liked it. The three of us shared it and we probably could have got a mini it was so big. Very thick. Syl's burger- "hella rad", loved it, could taste all the flavors Beer batter fries- so good, loved the upgrade, extra crispy Bacon cheeseburger- "best burger ever", jsyk onions are raw, perfect with shake Regular fries- salty and potatoey, honestly just so good Salad with Italian dressing- normal but really like the dressing, it's the thick kind Mushroom and cheeseburger- delicious and one of the best burgers I ever had, great ratios, loved the sauce Shakes- Oreo has a crazy amount of oreos and is delicious and the Chocolate is pure chocolate amazingness. Perfect ratios. Whipped cream tasted homemade but not quite sure. *recommend dipping fries in the shakes! In summary it's amazing. Go here!

Jeff G.

Yelp
Absolutely the best food! Ate there a couple times while exploring the Porcupine Mts.

Jessica K.

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner during a camping trip and we're absolutely blown away! Everything we had was fantastic! The pepperoni stuffed breadsticks are deliciously cravable, the fried chicken and mashed with gravy were just like grandma always made. We ate until we were stuffed! And the price is so affordable, you'll want to double tip your waitress ;-). Can't go wrong here! A must stop!

Kristi O.

Yelp
Great food and pastries. Definitely a hidden gem! Coffee is great to! They grind there own beans so it's fresh!

Nick O.

Yelp
I'm a pizza snob. This place has surprisingly good pizza. Danishes are next level too. Oh, and Kathy is an angel. Go here.

Bridget C.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and we were immediately seated (were told to sit wherever we'd like). The service was quick and friendly. Syl's has a wide section of breakfast (served all-day) and lunch/dinner options. The bbq bacon cheeseburger, turkey club on wild rice cranberry bread, curly fries and beer battered fries were all very tasty! They also have a selection of desserts/sweets including donuts&pastries, cookies, and pie. We will be stopping in again!

Hana Y.

Yelp
Syl's offers an amazing breakfast! I had the pot roast skillet, and it was SO tasty. Flat, salty, tender pot roast - doesn't get better. Syl's is a hometown diner, elevated. Lots to choose from on the menu, and I don't think you can go wrong with any of it. If I had one comment, I wish the menu were more descriptive. There were no ingredients listed, just 'fiesta skillet, California skillet' - I had to ask what was in each item. At the end of the day, it's all good - so just point and order!
