The Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Vancouver, Washington | Eater Portland

"Find customizable Liege waffles served quickly in a casual setting at Syrup Trap. Made-to-order waffles come with sweet toppings like the Leslie Knope with fresh strawberries and whipped cream or savory options such as the Couve Club with Havarti, honey maple turkey, bacon, and raspberry preserves. Customers can also build their own combinations or order a waffle dusted with powdered sugar for snacking on while wandering downtown or heading to the nearby public library." - Rachel Pinsky

I had the JG squared which was delicious and refreshing with the whipped cream and lemon curd. The blueberries were so fresh. The waffle was recommended by the staff member Kyle and Heather made a great cup of coffee, both of them were incredibly friendly. I will '10 for 10' eat here again when I am in town from Texas!

Google
My mom and I were looking for a place to eat brunch on Mothers Day, and came across this place. The food was delicious. We both had the JG²..yum! (I expected something slightly larger for the price we paid--the only reason it is getting 4 stars) Atmosphere was cute 😍 Staff was friendly. This would make a great place to go with friends for a morning coffee/waffle get together. Parking...it's downtown Vancouver, so it's a hit and miss if you'll get a good parking spot. We went on a Sunday, so we were fine and didn't have to pay for parking.

Google
Waffles are reheated, they’re hard and cold upon arrival, they offer precooked bacon as a side, foamy, and slightly burnt. 4 employees to just stand around and serve precooked food. Save your money and go somewhere else.

We needed to stop somewhere for a quick bite and decided on Syrup Trap this morning. This was actually my second time here, but a first for my husband. He loves anything sweet for breakfast so I figured he would like some of the menu items here. When we got there, it was about 1pm or so. There were 3 different tables of other customers when we arrived. Not that busy. We ordered a sandwich and a plate of waffles with Nutella. My husband loved the mojo jojo and devoured all of it. My sandwich was just okay. The waffle was really dry and overcooked in my opinion. It was not that soft when I was biting in to the sandwich. Establishment was cute and small. It's a buss your own table type of place located in downtown Vancouver so it's all street parking.

Seating inside, a few tables outside. Staff seemed friendly and helpful. If they don't have quite what you want on the menu, let them know, and they'll help you build what you want. I thought the food was good, but I obviously eat too much...I was still hungry. Ha! I didn't order more because I wanted something a little heavier. This would be a nice spot for a few friends to catch up...order more than one and do some sampling with each other. Cute, clean, good!

Such a nice little waffle place! Food are very affordable yet really good quality food!! Such a gem in downtown Vancouver.

Google
I just visited here for the first time today. I am in awe of just everything about this place. My food was amazing, my caramel macchiato was superb and the service was great. They have a honey lavender latte and I wanted it as a tea instead and they accommodated me with no hesitation. Will definitely be back when in the area.

Google
Cute place with tasty waffles and coffee. The staff was friendly and the service was pretty quick. I love that there are savory options and sweet options. The Parks & Rec references definitely make me want to bingewatch the entire show again. Due to sleepy lazy Sunday reasons we did not have breakfast this morning and came here during lunchtime. We ended up getting two savory waffles and one sweet waffle. They were all really good. The Swanson did come a little smaller than expected, but it was great taste wise. The Audrey was savory and delicious, the goat cheese was perfect and not too goat-y. Unfortunately the Leslie Knope was out of season, so we got the JG2 instead. The lemon and blueberries made it taste very fresh and 'healthy' (as far as waffles can be healthy), I personally also appreciated that the whipped cream on this waffle was not overly sweet. Despite getting 1.5 waffle each we did not feel like our stomachs were about to explode, which we did actually expect, but that's on us for skipping breakfast. Would definitely recommend going here! Great waffles and nice alternatives for people that are not too much in to sugar and sweets.

Yelp
Visited here for the first time on a sunny Saturday morning around 9am. I would definitely recommend getting here early since the restaurant filled up quickly after we ordered. Lots of families with little kiddos and couples and friends catching up over some yummy fluffy waffles. It was a little smokey in there when we were there and they actually don't have a bathroom in the building they are in but the friendly staff took the time to walk me next door and gave me the ladle key to access the bathroom in the adjacent building. You order at the counter and when I ordered the small hot chocolate I was asked if this was for a child and if so they are able to make it less hot and put it in a cup with lid. What a thoughtful gesture and much appreciated by this toddler mom! My friend and I and my toddler ordered the Audrey (goat cheese, honey, walnut), the Mojo Jojo (Nutella, banana, whipped cream), and I got the original waffle with whipped cream as well. The Belgian Liege waffles were crispy and fluffy but just dense enough to fill you up! I loved the suggested combos but you can also build your own too! (Although I did think $3 for a few pieces of strawberry were a little steep as a topping) but I think their suggested combos are the way to go. I even brought the original waffle home and it was just ask good toasted the next morning with my own toppings. This was a nice treat on a weekend morning. Go enjoy some sweet or savory waffles!

Yelp
Not bad! It's a small space, counter service, and pretty fast, even when busy. I ordered a vanilla latte and a gluten free waffle with lemon curd. Latte was yummy, the gluten free waffle was a little dense and flavorless. The lemon curd was more like a syrup, and as a huge fan of lemon curd, I was almost offended by this claim that it is in fact lemon curd. More like a watery lemon sugar syrup? I live in Portland, so it's sort of a drive, but there aren't too many places that offer gluten free waffles for some reason. After trying it out, I am still on the hunt for that "perfect" gluten free waffle - this isn't it!

Yelp
I went here for brunch. And the food was simply amazing. The service was so warm and welcoming, made me feel like family. I had a wapple waffle, it was like eating apple pie. We also had the Elvis with banana, peanut butter bacon and honey which was amazing. And lastly the Couve with Turkey bacon and raspberry jelly. Heaven!!! The atmosphere is great and def worth a repeat. Come check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
The food was delicious! The staff not so friendly. Cute spot. My kid loved her CC waffle plate!!

Yelp
Got the Leslie Knope to go, oh em gee, this is the best waffle I've ever had. Service was quick, they were so kind and the restaurant itself was clean, and pretty chill!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious breakfast and fast service! A great stop if you're in the area or driving to and from Portland

Yelp
Update from my original review - I'm not sure when they changed this, but they now have syrup dispensers on all the tables, so you can have syrup on your waffle at no additional cost. Yay! Everything else from my previous review still stands, and I'm so glad they gave a gluten-free waffle option. I only wish they had a bigger location with more seating. Many times when we've wanted to come here they are packed with no open seats, so we end up going elsewhere. I'm glad they are doing so well!

Yelp
Their coffee was really good but I might have just went on a bad day for the food. The waffle was over cooked and the Berries were very mushy...
google avatar

Yelp
Heck yeah this place is the bee's knees. Delicious food, specialty drinks, and the staff are all amazing. The vibe is cozy and clean. 10/10.

Erin F.

Yelp
I did create-your-own with pears, Brie, and honey. It was AMAZING! The waffle has a sourdough flavor and paired with the toppings it was probably the best waffle I've ever had. My friend got the Nutella and banana waffle and I didn't think that one was as good. Go for the savory/sweet combo. Great service too!

Yelp
Stopped in about 10 minutes after opening on a Sunday morning. Only two tables were occupied, so it was a perfect time to visit without a line. The inside is small with only a few tables and bar seating in the window. There were a few bistro tables outside the entrance as well. You order at the counter, they bring you your food, then buss your table when finished. They also have a complimentary water and creamer station for convenience. After reviewing the menu, we decided on the Swanson Sammy ($11.75) and The Original with strawberries, bananas, and nutella ($11.75). My husband also ordered a 12 oz drip coffee ($3.25) with free refills. The guy at the counter let us know it would be a few minutes for the waffles because the irons were still heating up. We didn't think a 'few minutes' was too long, so we agreed; however, a few minutes actually meant 20 minutes. The wait was much longer than we anticipated, but the waffles were well worth the wait! They were nice and crispy on the outside and sweeter than normal waffles. We didn't need or order any syrup. My husband thought next time he may order the syrup with the sandwich because it was a little dry. Mine was perfect! I may opt for whipped cream with the berries next time. I would definitely order the same thing. Overall, we enjoyed our first visit and look forward to trying other menu options. Would recommend!

Yelp
First off, great service!! Greeted with smiles and genuine kindness. It is a smaller inside sitting area but sitting outside was still nice if the weather allows! And the food was amazing every waffle I tried was perfect consistency and the toppings were perfect. I don't think there's one you can choose and go wrong. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Gluten free and dairy free review: Alright, just because this place rocks doesn't mean it's made of stone, so I'm giving this place the review it deserves. Five stars, baby! Now, let's talk about these gluten-free waffles. They're so tasty, it's like they've got a secret recipe straight from the waffle gods themselves! Not soggy and the right amount of crunch. I had the Sammy Swanson, and my daughter went all-in with the Elvis. The Sammy Swanson, is a savory waffle breakfast sandwich that'll make your taste buds do a happy dance and the Elvis had peanut butter, sweet bananas, and the salty goodness of bacon. Trust me, your mouth will thank you for this flavor explosion! You need to go here. But wait, there's more! We washed it all down with a Chai tea. It was so creamy, it could've moonlighted as a cozy milkshake! Perfect for gearing up and getting cozy for fall. Now, here's the scoop: they don't have dairy-free whipped cream, but fear not, my lactose-challenged friends! They've got other waffle choices that are dairy-free, so you won't miss out on the fun. Now, let's give a shoutout to the service, because it was off the charts! These folks were oozing kindness and helpfulness like nobody's business. I mean, they practically had a Ph.D. in making you feel like you were in the right place. So, kudos to the awesome team that made our experience truly memorable. Love that the location is downtown. No parking next to it unless a spot is available. You may have to walk to the location but usually not too far. They gave me instructions but I was unable to find the bathroom. This place is made of pure awesomeness! Get ready for waffle magic, hilarious names, and service that'll make you want to give 'em a standing ovation. Five stars, my friends, five stars! Now hurry they could run out of gluten free waffles if they're busy.

Yelp
Food and service great. Particularly if you have a sweet tooth or love waffles. But check out the "second breakfast"; wow! Small but quant place. Almost cafeteria seating with two long narrow wood plank counters by window with stools, so you can enjoy people watching. Although a little awkward to do that, if one or both of the two tables for two, right outside the window on the street are being occupied... It makes you feel like you're being nosey just trying to enjoy the view while you sip your coffee or mimosa. Can get busy on the weekend, but the wait isn't too long. Staff is friendly and congenial. It actually appears that they LIKE their jobs! (Something I'm starting to wonder, if might be a rarity these days!?) Only open Wednesday through Monday, 8am to 2pm, so it's not for late risers. Downtown but parking is easy if you only need to walk a block or two, when one of those out front aren't available.

Yelp
This spot hit the spot perfectly. I wanted a waffle and a tea latte, and that is what they had on the menu! We also were able to get a side of bacon to go (truly for our dogs, we are vegetarians, but we buy bacon for our dogs when we can) And, this was a generous amount of bacon for the price, I think! My only criticism would be the waffle itself was a little thicker, and not as sweet and chewy as my perception of how Liege Waffles should be. But, it was still delicious and I ate every bite. I also liked the reference to the show "Parks and Rec" with the waffle tribute being called "Leslie Knope". That is what i ordered and I was very happy with it! There was a line when we were there on a Sunday mid-morning around 10 am, but it was reasonable, it kept moving and we were able to get a seat before our food arrived!
google avatar

Gary P.

Yelp
Great waffles. A splendid menu! Staff is friendly and helpful. The tight confines might be a challenge for larger groups, but small parties 3 or less will benefit. Flavors are amazing and waffles are cooked to perfection. If you get a seat at the bar, you will have fun people watching.
google avatar

Mikelle D.

Yelp
Holy moly those were amazing waffles!! I really liked the casual diner feel and kind employees. The waffles themselves were so delicious, but what stood out the most was the really quality toppings. We got the Wapple and the Audrey and both were phenomenal!
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
Amazing waffles! The Couve is my favorite this review wants 85 characters. I'm a minimalist.
google avatar

Angelica A.

Yelp
Okaaayy Trap Queen! Serving up some strong' & loyal' .... waffles! You can smell the handmade waffles from outside! Small inside dining - plan accordingly! Came around 11:15 on a Saturday and it was perfect! The Nitro Cold Brew was smooooth - had to add some sugar. Wish there was flavor addition options. We split the Elvis & the Waffle Sandwich. The Elvis needed a 'WOW' factor in my opinion - with the bacon being so subtle. Still felt like a healthier version of the Waffle Window. The Waffle Sandwich was deliciousssss. If you want to go on an adventure - ask to use the bathroom haha. This has serious potential - have to come back for more to uncover!

Yelp
We didn't know what to expect here. Waffles, of course but good? In a word, outstanding. I had the Van Clucker, spicy chicken sandwich. Yum. My spouse had a gluten free waffle sandwich which she loved. Why only four stars? You order at the counter, pay, and are asked to tip. Yaaaa, no. That, and if you get a coffee there are no refills. (That I saw. I didn't ask.) I shouldn't have to. The portions could have been a bit more generous for the cost. Would I eat there again? Yup. It is worth the stop if you go in with some knowledge. Enjoy!

Yelp
We went in around 10am on a Sunday. Rightfully busy as most spots are around that time. The staff was all really friendly and answered our questions about customizing the waffles. There was a good vibe inside with everyone chatting and enjoying their meals. After we ordered, we waited around for a table inside to free up and sat down. Our drinks took 10ish minutes to come out but then the food took somewhere closer to 30-40 minutes since they were slammed with the mornings rush, but still felt like a long time for a couple of waffles. The waffles had a lot of potential but we're definitely a bit over cooked and a tad bit dry, so the actual meal was so-so. I won't say disappointing at all since we could tell they were busy, but wasn't blown away yet either. However, very ready to give them another shot when it's less busy and hoping to bump these stars up!

Brooke B.

Yelp
very friendly and patient staff! cute aesthetic. pretty solid liege waffles too!!! 11/10 would recommend for a quick bite to eat or a laid back brunch date.

Yelp
Vancouver Foodie Adventures presents the Syrup Trap. I've driven past this place 12,793 times, give or take a few, and always wondered about it. What do they serve at the Syrup Trap? I made up my mind that they only have pancakes and waffles stacked with cup after cup of whipped cream and powdered sugar...so I never stopped here cuz I'm much more of a savory loving broad but, as chance would have it, my family & I ended up here on a Christmas Eve around lunch time. It's a smaller shop, you order at the counter and bus your own dishes (no probs with this, but just saying in case you want full service). The staff were friendly and our food came out quickly, I was a little surprised that they only served waffles (Liege waffles to be exact even tho at the time, I was like wtheck is Liege and how do I pronounce that. Pro tip -read the whole menu, everything you need to know is there. Doh!). I decided on the Swanson Sammie since it seemed to have the most savory things in it -- cheese, sausage, egg. It was really good, paired nicely with the sweet crisp Liege waffles. My kids ordered the original with Nutella & sides of bacon--these were great but, in true kid fashion, they weren't as good as frozen. Eggo. Waffles. -siiiiiiiiiigh-. (Guess who I am never bringing here again.) Another menu item that was ordered was a special called the Vanclucky which was a spicy chicken sandwich-- I am told it was great! The ambiance was ehh, a little noisy with customers talking but nothing to write home about. Overall I thought the food was good (I do wish the portions were larger) and the price was ok. I'll probably be back to try a coffee and another fancy waffle, another day, another foodie venture! Cheers!

Linda P.

Yelp
This small cafe has delicious waffles! This was my first time and I had the "Second Breakfast " waffle: (Brie, prosciutto and pear on top). Can't wait to try some of their other combinations. Staff was friendly. It is a small place and a little noisy. Perfect place to stop for a bite when strolling around Main Street or before a matinee at the magenta theater.
google avatar

Lois C.

Yelp
Very yummy and great choices both sweet and savory. You order at the counter and seat yourself. Service is friendly, helpful and accommodating. We were all 3 happy with out waffles. We will be back!
google avatar

Ryan Y.

Yelp
When the place gets busy, the wait can be long for food and drinks. I think my wait was at least 20 mins. However, it was worth it. The second breakfast waffle with Brie and prosciutto was so delicious. The matcha latte was good. I have mixed feelings about syrup being extra when it's called the "syrup trap". I've never paid for syrup at a waffle place.
google avatar

SANDRA R.

Yelp
Wow - once I saw Leslie Knope on the menu I knew this place would be amazing and it totally was! I had Second Breakfast and the Prosciutto with Brie and Pear was the perfect flavor combination! The Leslie Knope was uh-may-zing! You have to try the whip cream - oh my goodness - creammmmy and deliciousness with a side of strawberries!! You have to try it! My son had the Swanson Sammie and let's just say he was the first one finished devoured it all!! The lavender fog latte's and caramel macchiato did not disappoint either!! You should try it!
google avatar

Sheridan S.

Yelp
This was the cutest spot ever. The food and drinks were delicious. I took my best friend here for her birthday and we got the best service. It's better to go early because it gets busy!!! But so worth it. We will be going back!!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Okay y'all, this was fabulous! The waffles were delectable. Perfectly soft, sweet and crisp. It was a busy place, but we snagged an outdoor table on our way out! I ordered the Elvis, and my sister got their special (peaches). We both ordered coffee, I got an iced mocha and she tried their pumpkin latte. Everything was amazing. It was a perfect portion, not overly decadent but delightfully sweet. Please visit so I can live vicariously through you!
google avatar

stephanie b.

Yelp
Cute little place - about 6 tables and some bar seating. Plan on waiting! You order and then find a table. Hoping people eat and leave rather than camp out. So many great waffle options with sweet or savory. Coffee and espresso options. Really cute place!

James C.

Yelp
The waffles are amazing. Either sweet or savory. Staff are friendly and efficient. It is amazing how fast they get the orders out. A perfect charming. Brunch spot. Highly Recommend

Anna V.

Yelp
Best waffles!!! Sweet or savory. Loved mine with blueberries , lemon glaze and maple syrup on the side.
google avatar

Prima B.

Yelp
We came here for breakfast one Saturday morning. Not too busy. Food was ok. Nothing spectacular. The waffle was doughy. The middle part was undercooked. Coffee was good and service was quick and straight forward. We like supporting local businesses so we will try this place again!
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
The place is cute the staff is friendly.. the food needs more. From the heated up frozen sausage patty, to the liquid eggs, this place is lacking. The waffles were a little tough but tasted decent. For the price of $27 and some change for 2 sammies they were a miss. It seems like they are trying to push out food instead of taking the time with fresh ingredients to make quality food. Looking at their past photos, there is a huge difference in change of quality.
google avatar

Aren S.

Yelp
Waffles. Buy waffles. Tasty waffles with lots of syrup. But also...Brie and pear. Seasonal pumpkin cheesecake waffles. You don't have to get hit in the head with a golf ball to know these are amazing and definitely on the uptrend. It's a bit...cozy inside. This place definitely draws a crowd. I personally eat alone so the window-facing bar is something I definitely appreciate.

Hans M.

Yelp
This review is an outlier compared to the other reviews, so just take it with a gain of salt. I looked on the website to see if there was a contact where I could leave a more private review, but there isn't. I have no complaints about the service. But I sure hope that today's waffle dough was just an exception; the waffle was disappointing. I couldn't find any pearl sugar and the inside of the waffle was very doughy. Liège waffles typically are 60% (baker's percentage) pearl sugar. That causes caramelized sugar on the outside and clumps of pearl sugar inside the waffle; their major attraction.

Julia W.

Yelp
Went with my friend for a birthday brunch! The waffles were absolutely scrumptious and the lattes were also great!!! The guys working here were super friendly and quick with our orders.

Katrina H.

Yelp
Great staff, really fun, almost environment. Snacks were really good and drinks were creative and delicious.
google avatar

Faith K.

Yelp
Yum! Fun flavor combos, went for a brunch a few weeks ago. Good coffee too. A bit pricey and what kind of waffle shop charges extra for syrup when it's even in the name?!
google avatar

Jessica Z.

Yelp
Mojo Jojo, pretty good!it was a little bit too sweet but the whip cream evened it out. First time here and will be going back when I visit Vancouver again

Sabrina C.

Yelp
I dream about the Audrey. They have turned me into a goat cheese fiend. It's so good, love the cute tables (tho on busy days don't recommend coming with a group because it's quite limited seating). When it was busy our first time, we took our brunch to the water front and drank our coffee and it was really nice. My husband loves the Swanson Sammy. And yes, get the syrup even tho it's extra.
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
Stopped by for a little brunch. Place is cute but tiny. All dishes were good but the waffles were the star of the show. Everyone loved their dishes. I'm not a sweet fan so I wish the sandwich was a little more savory but all in all I will be back.

Wilman S.

Yelp
I will be back please open up in Seattle so delicious the Swanson Sammy and mojo Jojo
google avatar

Zack S.

Yelp
SYRUP TRAP doesn't quite live up to exactly what it's title is. surprisingly, it's weaker points come in specifically it's syrup and waffles... a sub-par waffle that feels comparable to a hotel's waffle iron and syrup with little flavor. however, if you're coming for an over-the-top waffle decked out in a ridiculous amount of toppings and aren't looking to go across the pond to WAFFLE WINDOW, this is easily your spot. SYRUP TRAP is a fun little touristy spot that's a fun place to stop after a browse through the Saturday Market downtown. it's nothing crazy, but its coffee delivers!!!! TL;DR: a cute spot thats worth stopping in if you're around the area
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Love the food!! Best waffles I've ever had with so many options. The service is always prompt, even when they are packed and always so friendly. The restaurant is cute, clean, open and inviting! One of my favorite places to hit up when craving brunch.

Chip D.

Yelp
I was on a layover for work and stumbled upon this place. Stopped by on a Saturday morning to check out what they had to offer. This place has a great vibe, welcoming dogs and their owners to sit outside and enjoy some waffles and coffee. Staff was super friendly and welcoming to an outsider and provided me with excellent recommendations. I had some coffee (with never-refills!) and banana, Nutella and whipped cream waffle with bacon. Service was quick and friendly and the food was delicious. Keep it up Syrup Trap!!
google avatar

Dixie D.

Yelp
I would be addicted to this funky little place if I lived here. The waffle was a little tough like it had cooled a little when brought out. However it was very enjoyable. Charging extra for syrup was a gauge that was a reason I downgraded to 4 Stars. When I feel like a place is charging for something that should be standard I feel gauged. The fruit was fresh and well presented. Selection was cleaver and should provide something for everyone.

Lori C.

Yelp
I'm in Vancouver for six days and found Syrup Trap my first morning with my son. Lucky me. Revisited the second morning with my other child. Both times I got the Original, a plain crisped to perfection waffle with a light dusting of powdered sugar. Superb. The waffles are denser than "normal" waffles, reminding me of a cross between a sweet bread and a waffle which, to me, was utterly unique and delicious. It also had a sweet note, but just the right amount (less than pastry). My kids got the ham and Brie with fresh pear slices. Also phenomenal. Honey lavender latte was yum. Order upfront and drinks and waffles delivered to tables (indoor and out).
