Best San Francisco Restaurants for Spicy Food | Eater SF

"Home to one of the most famously spicy cuisines in the world, Sichuan (or Szechuan) Province is in the center of China, right on an ancient trading route. When chilies arrived from South America, they found a home in the muggy climate; Traditional Chinese medicine said their warming nature rebalanced bodily humidity. While the cool, foggy Outer Sunset could hardly be called humid, it’s another great place to rebalance your internal temperature with Sichuan food, and straightforwardly-named Szechuan Cuisine is making some of the best in town. Get your mouth ready for the distinctive mala combination of spicy and numbing: Red chilies and Sichuan peppercorns working together to create a buzz you won’t soon forget." - Sam Chapple-Sokol

Stopped in for some classic Szechuan dishes and overall had a really solid experience. The food was bold, flavorful, and packed with spice, though a little on the salty side across a couple of dishes. Highlights: * Dan Dan Noodles - one of the best dishes of the night. Perfect chew on the noodles and a sauce that balanced spice and nuttiness really well. * Pig Ears - surprisingly delicious! Great texture and seasoning, definitely a standout and something I'd recommend. * Dry-Fried Green Beans - crisp, garlicky, and addictive. * Beef with Peppers - tender slices with plenty of heat, though again a touch salty. * Fish Fillet with Chili - tasty and fresh, but I've had stronger versions elsewhere in the city, so not my personal favorite here. The portions were generous, the food came out quickly, and everything had that signature Szechuan punch of heat and flavor. If you like bold dishes and don't mind a little extra salt, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Google
Their service and foods are fabulous. They even can answer all our concern about the level of spicy about the foods because we afraid the spicy can make our stomach not comfortable. At last they even gave us dessert to relieve our stomach. Come hungry, leave happy! Definitely recommended! 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Lucky to drop by at this restaurant, though little disappointed that we did not get The Tilapia…… but they gave us another option which wasn’t so bad,

Google
Came in pretty late shortly before they closed with a large group. It was empty except for us. The food came out quickly and the staff were really friendly and even took a photo for us. One issue though is that the quantity of the food isn't a lot. So, while I guess the dishes are family style, for a Chinese restaurant it just wasn't a lot. It tasted really good though!

Google
Best fresh spicy fish in the bay area! Even better than some resturants in China! The fish is so tender and fresh. The fu qi fei pian was a little mid, but the spicy dumpling was amazing

I ordered happy hour food delivery from here and was pretty satisfied with what I received. It’s nice that this place participates in the DoorDash happy hour promotions so that I can try multiple dishes for a late lunch or early dinner without having to go out and struggle to find parking on Irving Street. Cucumber salad: 3.5/5 The flavor was very garlicky. I didn’t really taste much vinegar or soy sauce. I think it would be better if it were less salty but still glad I ordered it, as the crispness of the cucumbers balanced out the meal. Dry sautéed string beans: 4/5 These string beans had pretty standard flavour, but they were longer than average and slightly undercooked. I still enjoyed them, especially since they were less greasy than what I’ve received from some other places. Iron pot fish filets: 5/5 The fish fillets were amazing with all the Sichuan spices and chili oil. If I dined in, I would likely ask them to increase the spiciness, but they still taste great at the default spice level.

Google
We were a party of 4 and we were craving for Chinese food. It was our first time eating here and the menu looked good with photos. The prices seemed reasonable for San Francisco. We enjoyed our dinner. The only caution is to make sure to pay attention to whether the dish is spicy or not. I ordered the grilled fish pot and it came very spicy. I still ate the dish since it was delicious.

Google
Came here for lunch yesterday and got the lunch special with soup and Poached Beef in Chili oil. Everything was delicious. I came in with no idea what I wanted and let them decide for me which is my favorite way to try a new spot. Will be back!

Was craving a warm simple soup. Pretty busy for a Monday. Good prices Will be back

Yelp
Got the lunch special pork with garlic sauce and came with rice and vegetables and hot and sour soup. Really great deal and really good food. Too much for me to eat it all but I tried hard. Nice cozy little spot, easy to miss walking by but the smell drew me right off the sidewalk and into the restaurant. Friendly and very quick service had me in and out of there in 20 minutes or less but I was never rushed out. Seems like a lot of locals frequent this spot and that is never a bad sign.

Yelp
My brother told me Szechuan Cuisine had been around for a while and one of his neighbors really liked it. We decided to give it a try. The service was friendly and the interior design looked cool. We tried a few dishes and the best one were the broccoli with garlic and the spicy fish fillet served it a little container that is kept warm with a flame. For some reason, the fried rice dish we had was very salty and the noodle dish lacked flavor. We look forward to trying other restaurants in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I discovered this place yesterday as I was craving something spicy. Overall, solid good food and I will come by again. I ordered Cumin Lamb which was nicely flavored, with fresh cumin, nicely sliced garlic and maybe peanuts(?). Really liked the flavor. I finished both dishes, didn't leave anything. Very Tasty. The only tiny point I take off is that it wasn't spicy enough. Hey, if I am in a Sichuan place, I am looking for spicy :). Anyways, next time I will ask for extra spicy. The cucumber salad was also nice and plentiful. Really enjoyed it. The service was very nice too, friendly and people were smiling. I felt comfortable and at ease. One thing I'd recommend is maybe have a menu with photos, have some soft music play in the background and maybe better decor as well to add to the "homey" feel. Good place, I will come again.

Yelp
Cold night, had a taste for Mapo Tofu and other Yelpers were right that this Sunset District spot, Szechuan Cuisine, does Mapo Tofu so, so well. I found myself trying to deconstruct the dish: Green Sichuan peppercorns, a dollop of black bean sauce, a scant bit of cumin? It kept me guessing. I could've gone up in heat level from the medium I ordered. I wanted a mouth-numbing mala feel which I'm sure they'd accommodate. Yeah man, I can take your heat, bring it! As good as the Mapo Tofu was, the Dan-Dan noodles disappointed: The sauce didn't coat the noodles like other Yelpers' photos of the dish and the flavor lacked depth. But just like that, the pork chili wontons pulled me back in, amazing. Hot in both temperature and spiciness, their juiciness dusted with dry chili powder had my eyes fly open while reaching for the serving spoon to grab two more. Service was friendly and sweet. They promptly refilled water glasses and conversed with my son in Mandarin. Note to those sensitive, they do use MSG and I drank more water to offset a headache I felt beginning to lurk behind my eyes. (Worth it, that's why they make Exedrin)

Yelp
Absolutely love this place!! Probably one of my go-tos for Szechuan cuisine. Parking can be a little difficult around here since there are so many small businesses and local restaurants on Irving Street, but we didn't have a wait at all when we walked in. We ordered the hot and sour soup, bean curd salad, chili wontons, and beef with black pepper sauce. Honestly, everything here is good and hits the spot. It's exactly what you expect the dishes to be!

Yelp
This is a gem of a find! Foodies can find authentic, fiery, 麻辣 numbing-spice dishes right here in the Sunset! You can get a whole lunch meal deal that could feed two people (see Figure 1)! Pro tip for the wallet-conscious: just add an extra order of rice! One lunch deal included big portions including soup, rice, And 2 orders of veggies - enough for a big appetite and then some leftovers for later (see Figure 2)! Or just order two lunch deals - absolutely szzzzzesty! That would be A lot of food! This is just like a family-owned, friendly shop you would find on a travel / food show with Migrationology, Best Food Review, Food Ranger, Strictly Dumplings, Check Please Bay Area, or Tastemade. Just this time, it is right around the corner - well, in the middle of the block. The entree was an actual entree dish that was in the lunch deal. It was like a whole set meal with everything needed including healthy veggies and rice. I had half of it left for at least another meal. The food was good; the veggies were also good - plenty of food, plenty of meat, and plenty of veggies (see Figure 3)! The hot and sour soup was classic - perfecto! It brings back childhood memories of running around through Chinatown with family and then getting hot and sour soup from a restaurant in an alley. I still remember that giant bowl of sweet and sour soup too. The interior was also very clean, the people there - likely the owners - were very nice and friendly. They take card or contactless payment too!

Yelp
Ordered for delivery but didn't like the food much. The spring rolls were burnt on one end. The chicken was not what we were expecting but wasn't too bad either.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood spot in the Sunset on Irving. My parents like to come here for lunch and I bring them from time to time. The food here is legit! A good amount of spice on the spicy dishes, though not overly much. The mouth-watering spice.... =)___ My parents like to order the lunch specials; it comes with a soup-du-jour, a dish of your choice from the lunch specials menu, and choice of brown or white rice. The portion size is perfect. My favorite dish (not on the lunch special menu, however) is the tea-smoked duck (樟茶鸭); slightly smoky, well-seasoned duck with a salty deliciousness. I appreciate their service here - warm and friendly. I can see why my parents like coming here; the wait staff takes good care of them!

Yelp
Overall , I really enjoyed this restaurant. They have sweet and friendly service. Very attentive and helpful. When asking to take my soup to go, they made sure to give me 2 containers so my soup wouldn't soak up all the broth. I got the number 3 . I really enjoyed the seafood soup with egg noodles! It was savory and satisfying. I enjoyed it reheated the next day as well . For me , the fried shrimp appetizer was pretty bland. Overall, I would highly recommend a visit for the seafood soup and I am excited to try more dishes here

Yelp
I've come here several times by this point and I've always enjoyed it. I've tried iron pots prawns, egg plant, their fish hot pot soups, beef in chili oil, green beans, and much more. If it's your first time and you can hand spice, I'd recommend the iron pot- anything! And I LOVE chili oil and the numbing spices, so the beef in chili oil makes me so happy. As classic Asian, try to vary your items, I like 1 veggie, 1 protein, 1 carb to keep a healthy mix of flavor profiles. They're super nice here and I'm always able to be seated. It's like a hole in the wall almost, it's smaller, very mom-pop vibes! I recommend this place and I'm coming back for sure.

Yelp
Came in for lunch with friends on a Sunday. We were all rather hungry but food came out super fast, starting with the cucumber and then the others closely followed. Every dish was really good, just the perfect amount of spice for us. Cauliflower was really fresh. Staff were friendly and refilled tea and water for us. Quiet day for lunch, and it was a great place for us to talk and catch up over food.
google avatar

Yelp
The lunch specials are a good deal! The main dish comes with rice, soup and two veggie side dishes, lots of food! They're quick and the restaurant is clean. Check it out for a quick weekday lunch!

Cyn T.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night and it made me sad to not see the place busy. We got a chili oil tilapia, Dan Dan noodles, and pea sprouts. Everything was so so delicious and comforting. It felt like a home made meal that hit the spot on a cold night Service was also great.
google avatar

Sally Y.

Yelp
Authentic Szechuan restaurant in the Inner Sunset with comfortable interior and friendly service. Even though one woman works the floor on her own, she smiles and attends to customers best she can without getting flustered. We had the chewy Dan Dan noodles, which is spicy with saucy ground pork. Mongolian chicken was made well, balancing the sweetness of slivered yellow onions and tender chicken. Pickled cucumber could be a bit more tart vs. salty, but was refreshing nevertheless. I look forward to coming back to try more of what they have to offer!

Yelp
Back again! For take out Everything good! Hot and sour soup( okay then great when we added mapo tofu to it!, pork dumplings(okay) , dan dan noodles (okay and good), stir fried chicken and chili(good and spicy!) and mapo tofu - wonderfully spicy (we love spicy) Free spring rolls not so good, need more filling but should not complain given they were free.

Yelp
Tasty food! I got eggplant sheszuan chicken. It was so rich and tasty. So too spicy for a cold sf night
google avatar

Yelp
This is my comfort food and favorite place. Chilli fish is the best taste and even veggies also yummy. I love staff here, they are so friendly with warmth hospitality
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't had szechuan food in so long so it was nice to eat some spicy numbing food again. The jelly is very soft and has a nice bouncy texture. The chili oil is what makes it taste very numbing and good. I liked the noodles (83) more because it's cold, has a sesame sweetness, and loved those types of noodles. I'm not as big of a fan of soup noodles but 84 is more chili oil heavy, so I would need to pair it with something cooking afterward. The staffs are soo friendly and the ambience is nice, minimal aesthetic.

Zexuan T.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with their Kung Pao Chicken -- the perfect mix of spicy, sweet, and crunchy Great food, fast service, and lovely people!
google avatar

John Z.

Yelp
Came here for lunch. Lots of options for one person lunch. From dumping to noddle. Seems authentic Sichuan food. But most of the servers are speaking Cantonese. I ordered a five spiced beef rice noddle soup. It tasted great. This is not a typical Sichuan dish. Instead, it is a mixed dish between Sichuan and Cantonese food.
google avatar

Yelp
Good-ness, that was delicious! Traveling with friends and had to find a place that had some American style Chinese for them, and some more traditional Szechuan for us. This has everything and we all found our happy place. We came in for lunch and did some specials and appetizers. Loved the cumin beef and bean paste noodles with pork, yum. The veggie sides were broccoli with sesame oil and marinated bean sprouts (with the numbing Szechuan pepper) and their hot and sour soup... wonderful! The dumplings in chili oil were also great.
google avatar

Drew V.

Yelp
Just a heads up another mandatory fee place even if you pick up and get no service. I prefer to choose to tip on a pickup where no service was rendered. To get grated on a cold pickup sitting out in the restaurant is bullshit. I could make better noodles at home and will.

W. L.

Yelp
We are looking the outside menu and owner convince us to try it out. This place is really has amazing food if you are visiting restaurants for taste, it definately takes very good. I didn't notice any MSG in the food and the owner express they maybe in the sauce. The portion sizing for price isn't good given you don't get lots of food on the plate thought. That knocked it 1 start. Service was great and we got refilled water and the waiting staff was excellent. Small restaurant so if you hit a busy time, you will have to wait but it's worth if you you have a small group. Seating is limited but works welk for us.
google avatar

Binh P.

Yelp
So far I'm satisfied with the mapo tofu here. It's silky, not too salty, and has a slight tingle. It's not really spicy at all. But please add an order of rice if you plan to eat it, it's not right without it. I was also debating between the dan dan noodles and the yi bin noodles. I asked the waitress what the difference was and she told me they were the same, except the yi bin noodles were much spicier. The noodles came out and were hand tossed at the table. But I think the noodles were even less spicy than the mapo tofu. The flavor was ok though, but I think my favorite part were the peanuts in the dish. Combined with the mapo tofu it was a bit more interesting. It's an OK place to go, but if you're looking for spice, this isn't it.

Yelp
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE!! The moment we walked in we were able to get seated and the staff is so friendly. It really gives you a homey feel as you walk in. The menu is big and has a lot of options. Cumin Lamb - 5/5 -I LOVE THIS DISH! it's so flavorful and it has a right amount of spice. The meat portion is also very generous. It's also not that greasy. Mapo Tofu - 4/5 - I thought this dish was so flavorful but it was super greasy. The tofu however was just right texture. It paired well with the rice. Sweet and Sour Chicken- 4/5 - it was just a normal sweet and spicy chicken. It was very flavorful but i just thought the portion was very very small. Dan Dan Noodles - 5/5 -the picture is not in this review but ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. The noodles are cooked to perfection and the waitress comes and helps mix in the sauce with the noodles. It's so flavorful and you can really taste the peppercorns as well. I absolutely love this restaurant and will come back again!

Yelp
The menu here is a literal spiral bound book, I suppose if I had been the creator of such a massive book (al la Cheesecake factory, but with 70% less items), I would have had a photo of EACH item next to each listing for us non-asian folk, but that was not the case here - It was just pages and pages of dishes with a few unlabeled photos. We went for lunch and each ordered a bowl of Dan Dan noodles and some spring rolls to share. Then they brought out some hot & sour soup too (maybe everyone gets that with their lunch). Sadly I couldn't really dig into the soup too much (or take it to go) b/c I fill up on soup too quickly and was saving room for the ordered items. The spring rolls could have contained a bit more filling, but were fried to crispy perfection and the perfect foil for the soft noodles. They bring the noodles out and mix them tableside, we both agreed that we would have liked a bit more green veg in the noodles, but they were the perfect spice level and the pork was delicious. I could only eat about 1/3 of it and took the rest home for 2 more meals! Service was efficient. And the dining room was pretty nice.
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
Incredible. Got fried sliced beef, yibin noodles, boiled pork dumplings with chili oil and cucumber salad. All were 10/10. The yibin noodles changed my life, flavor was to die for. Beef was so tender and flavorful, dumplings were just amazing. I recommend eating the yibin noodles last so you can taste all the other things.

Yelp
3.5 higher end of standard szechuan cuisine Overall ambiance isn't anything to write home about. Nothing special but it's clean! Service was good - they would refill our water without asking Food was standard. Not bad but also not amazing. Definitely cured my mala spice craving but not sure I'd come back. We ordered some dumplings (boiled and pan fried) and they were okay... the boiled ones skin was a little tough and fillings weren't that flavorful. The green beans had really good flavor and I would order these again. Mapo tofu was nice and flavorful with good amount of the numbing spice. Dan Dan noodles were just okay in my opinion. The boiling spicy fish was good - very standard/typical/expected for a szechuan restaurant.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
got 4 dishes: 9. Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce 56. Stir-fried Pea Sprout 69. Fish Fillet with Szechuan Sauerkraut in Spicy and Hot Oil 58. Stew Eggplant Clay Pot overall besides the pea sprouts, all the dishes were overly saucy & oily. the chicken also tasted overly salty (didn't expect it to be so brined), though a solid portion. fish comes with noodles at the bottom which we didn't discover until more than halfway through. the eggplant was my favorite, flavored well though close to half the dish was sauce / garnishes. good prices.

Kelly D.

Yelp
Not typically what I would choose, but the fam is now into spicy. Good thing we asked for mild spicy. Lunch special was decent value.

A P M.

Yelp
Very very good for Szechuan food. I always get Poached Fish Filets in Boiling Chili Oil. Such fresh and excellent fish and its for two so its two quarts. I take most of it home and it only gets better in the fridge. So fresh it lasts in the fridge up to a week. Also the chow mein is perfect. and the mapo tofu
google avatar

Sherri W.

Yelp
A nicely decorated Szechuan restaurant with a great selection of Szechuan dishes. The interior is modern & bathroom clean although no Public Health rating was posted. Orders: Spicy & Sour Glass Noodle- bouncy & flavorful noodles with a lot of chili peppers incorporated into this dish. A nice addition were the peanuts that had a chewy bite to them instead of a roasted crunchy texture to them. The vinegar & chili peppers give it an authentic flare, so while my daughter enjoys this dish, i have a different preference when it comes to Szechuan dishes. Stir Fried Beef w.Cumin- great portion size as well as flavor, usually I am apprehensive about the quality of meat, but it wasn't too bad with just 1-2 pieces of chewy meat. I would say it's a pretty authentic dish, but be warned that it can get a bit spicy bc they put a generous amount of chili peppers. If I visit next time I would come back to try their Sauteed Shredded Pork with Spiced Dry Tofu.

Yelp
Very dry duck. Taste more like ham. Also very difficult to find parking. Everything is metered parking. Not worth it.

Yelp
Came for dinner with partner and our vegetarian friend; there's a lot of seating for small groups and we were seated quickly on a Friday night. The inside is cute and bright! Service was very friendly and quick; after we decided what to order in the giant book of a menu we got our food in bouts maybe 5-10ish min later. We got and shared: - spicy fried chicken (a must) - mapo tofu - vegetarian dan dan noodles (for our friend's benefit) - sauteed green beans - pork dumplings in chili oil The food was good - I don't think it was quite as spicy as others have said, but definitely very tasty and checked all my boxes. The chicken I thought had a lot of small pieces but I like that it included peppers as well. It was great that they could accommodate our vegetarian friend with the noodles; I did notice the vegetarian version was much more peanutty than chili-y but my friend actually preferred that. I thought the mapo tofu was the star of the show to be honest. All in all - good! This city has lots of Szechuan options and I think this spot is good for small groups, especially ones with vegetarians.

Yelp
the food here is super flavorful and yummy. the store also has a really nice homey vibes. the food was the perfect amount of spice for me where i could eat it but it was slightly challenging.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon and were seated immediately. The restaurant is clean and kind of small but it smelled so good inside walking in lol. Our waitress was friendly, quick, and attentive! Food also came out really fast and piping hot-- got our dishes under 10mins. Dried sautéed string beans - Half of the string beans were a bit too soft and half were kind of firm tbh but that worked for me and my boyfriend lol :,) but the taste did not disappoint and it had really subtle kick of spiciness Iron pot fish fillet - Fish absorbed the flavor really well and was suuuuper soft. Yes, it was spicy but I'd get this again. We ate these two dishes with a bowl of rice and almost cried during one meal lol
google avatar

Yelp
Best mapo tofu I've had in SF!!! The staff is always super friendly, service is quick, and food is delicious. What more could you ask for?
google avatar

Pree K.

Yelp
Such a great find! This place has the nicest staff. Very accommodating and attentive. Tried the lunch special poached fish filets in boiling chili oil: comes with a veggie (broccoli), 3 potstickers, rice, and soup. The fish was delicious! It has the numbing spices which I don't normally like but this was mild enough to be enjoyable. The veggie potstickers were super good too. The broccoli was a bit cold (but that might have been because we converted a to-go order to in person, which they were so nice about), and the soup was good but with a strong soy sauce like Godbout. They added a complementary hot tea to the meal, which really hit the spot on a cold, rainy day. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
Personal favorite spot for some properly zesty, numbingly spicy Szechuan food in this city.

Siddhartha G.

Yelp
I came into Szechuan Cuisine via good word of mouth and high expectations for sizzling servings full of peppercorns, and I was rather underwhelmed. Vegetarian dan dan noodles were an easy choice, and left my mouth numb, just as I had hoped. The bar though is set quite high by Z&Y and Chong Qing Xiao Mian, and the ones here paled in comparison. I wasn't a fan of the nutty sesame sauce taste and would've preferred the plain taste of sichuan peppercorns and the noodles with some veggies. It's probably a personal preference though. What really left me disappointed was the griddle dishes. The menu picture looked promising, and it was priced at $16.95, so I had high hopes. I opted for the cauliflower griddle dish, and I asked to add potatoes to it (an additional $5). It turned out to just be some steamed cauliflowers, a few slices of fried potatoes, some small pieces of peppers and maybe a couple scallions. It was seasoned with only some salt, didn't have any spice, nor any char. I suppose it was healthy though. Oh well.

Sovin K.

Yelp
It's like heaven on a plate. The prices are high but the portion sizes have improved.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
Well, to start, I've been eating here since moved to the sunset district. I get cravings for different things but when I get a craving for mapo tofu I usually come here. It's perfectly spicy and satisfies my need for Szechuan cuisine (no pun intended). I've tried their Dan Dan noodles which are also a banger. If you like spicy Chinese food definitely give this place a try!
google avatar

Cookie M.

Yelp
Whatever you do please please do not change your mapo tofu recipe. As a long time lover of this dish I have been looking for a good place as many of my past places ended up making it less mala spice or just changed the recipe entirely. I picked this up for a to go order recently (among other nearby food orders) for a SF friend who now lives in NYC and was visiting and we couldn't stop raving about it. Just the right amount of greasiness and the tingling heat hit the spot. Can't wait to come back and try other dishes

Yelp
All around everything is delicious. Got take out and the spice level was just right. Looking forward to check this place in person.

Yelp
This place is so good and such good value that I almost want to gatekeep it, but I want them to succeed. Dan Dan noodles here has the perfect amount of the tingling spice, great flavor, the sauce is not too thick...AND it's under 10 bucks. Perfect lunch spot and was almost empty when I came during a weekday. With cost of living in the city and rent prices, I really hope they continue to thrive and offer affordable, delicious food.

Yelp
I was feeling bold and adventurous so I went balls out with the Szechuan food...and, it was amazing! Don't let the fear of the chili fool you in to not ordering it. It's a mellow continual burn, not a jalapeño burn. I got the steamed chicken in chili oil and the spicy Dan Dan noodles. Both were great! Yes. I'm sweating as I type, but my mouth is not on fire. I found my new place for Szechuan!
