San Diego’s 2018 Restaurant Newcomers and Standbys | Eater San Diego

"I still frequent the very dated Szechuan Mandarin on Mission Gorge Road for its steamed pork dumplings—classic and dependable despite the old-school surroundings." - Candice Woo

My dog’s food is higher quality than this… seriously we got chicken broccoli and general tso’s. Two of the MOST COMMONLY ordered dishes. The chicken broccoli was thin slices of chicken FAT. The general tso’s was a bit better but I can get frozen general tso’s for much cheaper and higher quality at Walmart. That’s how bad it was. One and done with this place. $33 for absolute dog poop

Google
First time visiting this place but I know the area very well. The food was good. It was not over seasoned, which made it better.

Irene R.

Google
Ordered the general‘s chicken and and an order of dumplings. The general‘s chicken was tough and almost impossible to chew. The dumplings were probably the thickest doughy dumplings I’ve ever had, not good. For the food to be that inedible it was still very expensive. I then remembered I had eaten there once before, ordered the exact same items because they my go to, And they were also bad then. My fault for not remembering

Google
Great place for vegetarians. Been going here for years. They have a dedicated vegetarian menu that has an incredible selection. I am a big fan of the vegetarian general tso’s chicken. I also love there veggie egg rolls, steamed vegetable dumplings, scallion pancakes and pineapple fried rice.

Google
Super nice people and good service. Consistently mediocre food with a decent dining room. Stick with the basics like lo mein and egg rolls, and you'll be in good shape. Get adventurous and you're likely to be disappointed, as many dishes are hit or miss. I recently had one of the fake chicken vegetarian dishes and the fake meat was inedibly gross. Bathroom is also kinda dirty. Would love to see them step up their game with fresher vegetables, better meats. Check out this chicken substance. On the outside it looks appealing. Pretty inedible though. Have a look at a cross-section here. It's mostly tough, stringy meat, uncooked batter and ... tendon? Yikes.

Google
I've been coming here since I was a kid. Love this place! The food has been consistently good for years. Eat in is more choice than take out; both are good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💕

Ed R.

Google
Very disappointed after seeing so many good reviews. My spring roll was soaked in oil, the chicken curry was watery and lacked any flavor, and the egg drop soup tasted like they used old eggs. In addition this place is way overpriced. It was almost twice as much as other Chinese restaurants in the area and I just can't understand why. Definitely won't be coming back here again.

Google
A sweaty gym next to a restaurant that’s under staffed and have to operate on covid rules although .. the restrictions have been lifted. The food is bland the staff will leave your food not behind the counter until you get back but in front of the table so anyone can check to see if it’s theirs. Disgusting and hopefully I survive..

Yelp
Love/hate having a Chinese food spot so close by. When I don't want to drive down into the city to pick some up this is our go to for take out. Like I said, I live fairly closed and the food is always hot and ready when I get there.

Yelp
I called and put in my order for Chef special General Tso chicken with brown rice and steamed vegetable dumplings. After I got finished eating the chicken I got diarrhea so I won't be ordering that meal again. It must have been a bad batch of general Tso chicken the lady have given me. The service and ambiance was good.

Yelp
This is the best chinese food around. Perect amount of sauce/seasonings and chicken, beef and pork are always cooked perfect. There is one woman who basically runs the place. She runs a tight ship and has their operation running smoothly. They never forget any items, quality is always great, and pickup time is always accurate. I have been a consistent customer for 9 years because of the consistency and quality.

Yelp
My go to Chinese restaurant in the Elkins Park area. Miss the dine in option which they haven't had since 2020. Reminded you of eating in an old school Chinatown restaurant. Nevertheless, happy they still offer the best Chinese takeout around!

Yelp
General's Tso chicken was delicious. Tiramisu, not so much. Overall, a good meal at a decent price.

Yelp
These days, you have to call and takeout only. So, if you don't know that you'll be standing in the lobby by yourself for a while. I don't know what I ate. The texture of the meat was off. I ordered the beef and peppers which had a decent sauce, pretty thick and gummy. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, still crunchy. The sesame chicken sauce was too red and also here, the meat had a weird texture. Like, do yall boil it first or something? Freeze it and unfreeze it and freeze it again!?! Overall, wouldn't go back. There are too many options just 25 mins down Broad St in Chinatown. That's if they don't build a stadium there instead.

Yelp
The best Egg Roll I ever had. It was thick but soft and kinda fluffy, perfectly fried, not burnt at all. The Lomein both chicken and veggie are really good too. I've been to a lot of other Chinese takeouts and not many can compare. The Wonton Soup has really big wontons and is yummy. Also tried the chicken cashew Chef Specials. The sauce for it is really flavorful and I like that they added snap peas to it
google avatar

Yelp
We got take out from here last week. Most of it went in the trash. I wouldn't even feed it to my dog. I like my dog. Bad, stay away.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
I called ahead to order and food was ready super fast! The woman working there was nice, and it really feels like they're a hidden gem! The food was amazing and I was so excited to see their menu has Crab Rangoon!
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
Szechuan Mandarin comes through every time. It's a weird establishment, as every time we go, the place is EMPTY. They must either make their money through dinner service, or take out, as there have never been more than 3 other people both times we've been. The food however, is always on point. They bring the food out PIPING hot and it's always fresh and delicious. The first time I went chalk and got the General Tso's. It was delicious, and the portion size was on the good side of obnoxious. The second time was crispy honey chicken, which was basically General Tso's without the spice, but it was just an enjoyable. The wonton soup comes with two HUGE wontons in a tasty broth. The service is very terse and no frills, but the servers are still polite and are there when we needed them. This is our go to Chinese spot in NE Philly.

Yelp
Wonderful!!!!! I'm an Asian food buff. Great , great people, consistent...top quality. Thank you for years of consistency in every way!!! PS.... Great heart as well! Always remembers me, my friends, and family. Thank you. Best!! Thanks

Yelp
We continue to patronize Szechuan mandarin through covid. The dining room is closed. If you call your order in you'll be able to pay over the phone to enable contactless pick up. They have a table blocking entrance and the counter features a wrap around plexiglass shield. The food if anything is better then before, and parking is easy now.
google avatar

Benita B.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in the suburbs. I compare it to Chinatown. I love the taste and flavors burst in your mouth.

Josh S.

Yelp
Excellent food, especially love their wonton soup and dumplings. It's more traditional suburban if that makes sense, but really great quality and delicious. Also appreciate how well they package the food to go.

Brittany B.

Yelp
Food was good, a bit pricey no sit in dining l, low staff apparently. But definitely good food. Will go back.

Monique M.

Yelp
We have been ordering from this restaurant for more than 10 years. We used to go there and eat and sometimes we would take out. The food was always amazing. Since Covid they stopped their dine in service and seem to be strictly takeout. Up until last month that was fine too. But last month I began to receive dishes that were much less than desirable. I would describe them as bland, flavourless and gummy. I ordered chicken fried rice that was so gummy, I couldn't even eat it. Then I ordered shrimp and vegetables with a nice sauce. I was so looking forward to it, but when I opened it there was so much oil, you could actually see it swimming in the sauce. The shrimp and veggie were also coated in oil. Another meal from them that I just couldn't eat. Sad thing is, I know I couldn't call and complain because the owner would just get nasty. So I've decided to not order from them again. My favourite place just lost a customer. I hate that for me and for them.

Barbara K.

Yelp
Convenient take-out parking. Always pleased with delicious menu choices. Thorough attention paid to special requests. Appropriate preparation time predicted. I always tip for their friendly pick-up service.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
I just moved to the area and I've had the Szechuan tofu twice. It's sooo good, I look forward to trying the other veggie options. The woman at the front is super kind and helpful. Already one of my favorites to eat from here!!
google avatar

MaudieMac M.

Yelp
Chicken wings to die for!! Great service . The wonton soup is excellent and the shrimp and broccoli is excellent.

Deborah K.

Yelp
The food is always good, but I miss being able to dine in. Szechuan Mandarin never reopened the dining room post pandemic. Food is always best straight from the kitchen!
google avatar

Christina J.

Yelp
Mehhh....I've had better Chinese food in the hood...My husband had the General Tso's combination platter, and I had sweet and sour shrimp with shrimp fried rice...The meals both came with white rice; however, for a hefty upcharge, we were able to upgrade the rice...The General Tso meat (and I use that term loosely) was very fatty, my husband didn't enjoy it at all. I was given 5 pieces of shrimp for my meal (less than other spots, especially given the upcharge we had to pay to make our meals a Large just to get shrimp fried rice), but the rice tasted fresh, so there's that. With that being said, that'll be our first and last visit.

Yelp
Food is quite yummy! Fresh and good portions. I especially enjoyed the crab rangoon as I'm always on a quest to find the best! They are at the top of my list of places for them now! I tried the shrimp may fun which was quite yummy. Looking forward to trying a few other dishes.

Yelp
We have been ordering take out every few weeks from here during Covid. It has been hot and delicious each and every time. Great local place, very consistent and staff has been friendly.
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Please don't waste your money. I stopped going here years ago because of change of ownership and chef. I thought I would try it tonight as a pick up. The food was inedible and I just tossed it. Fried rice: cooked in rancid oil; shrimp toast: burnt; fried shrimp: wet batter inside fried coating;spareribs: tough by overcooking. I thought the owner might like to know how poor this meal that was. NOPE, wasted my time calling. Her continual response was: THAT IS HOW IT IS. Wow, what a disappointment...
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
A little on the higher side for "Chinese food" but worth the extra. Portions big enough to share. I have never had anything here I didn't like. From the simple sweet and sour chicken to elaborate specials they offer, everything is a treat to the palette. Tonight's entrees were chicken with vegetables and walnut shrimp. Shrimp the size of a half dollar mounded upon a bed of broccoli in sweet yet savory black sauce with candied walnuts mixed in. A new favorite of mine. What can I say about chicken and vegetables - it speaks for itself. Consistently delicious - attentive staff that recognizes the regulars, friendly service brings us back a few times a month.

Tess G.

Yelp
Love their ribs. They're not slathered in sauce, nicely seasoned and meaty. Nice people and service is great.

Jerry D.

Yelp
Great local place for well-prepared food. Pretty standard menu but everything we've had has been excellent. Fresh ingredients and good taste on all of the old standbys with as much spicy heat/not as you prefer. Interesting chef specials and an extensive vegetarian selection. Take out process is solid for Covid concerns but looking forward to getting back to dining in.

Yelp
I love this place! Hands down the best Chinese food I get. I live in Jersey and none of the food here compares. My daughter lives near this restaurant so we've come to know it well and we're never disappointed. Some of us are vegetarian so those options are so nice to have and they're delicious, the wonton soup is perfect. I love the moo shu and the tofu with eggplant is soo yummy. The lomein is a big hit and their egg foo young is the only one I eat. It's light and I can taste the veggies. I usually find it to be goopy and gloppy but not here. Keep it up, Szechuan Mandarin!!

Ed R.

Yelp
Very disappointed after seeing so many good reviews. My spring roll was soaked in oil, the chicken curry was watery and lacked any flavor, and the egg drop soup tasted like they used old eggs. Yelp
Customer service is good here and pick-up orders are prompt but the food is just not that good. If you are really craving Chinese and there are no other options around then go here but you are better off eating something else! The fried rice is pretty bland and egg rolls are way too think with almost no vegetables inside.. and these are the 2 most basic meals at a Chinese restaurant! So, if they still get that wrong....
google avatar

Christine D.

Yelp
Hit and miss, mostly hit but not often what I would call a bulls eye. We've been getting food here for years and the percentage of time it's decent is much higher then the times it sucks and honestly it's rarely really great but it's hot, reasonably healthy if you order the right things and 2 minutes from my house so on nights we don't feel like cooking it's easy. We usually get takeout but dine inside occasionally and it's very nice albeit old fashioned as far as Chinese restaurants go. Most of the basics they do like chicken broccoli, wonton soup and such are fine. A couple of times we had the most delicious Chow Fun or Singapore noodles that we've ever had in our lives. So we literally called and asked what chef was cooking and what nights he worked so we could order it again only to be met with a snarky "its the same chef as always"! I'd say of the 40 - 50 times we've ordered Chow Fun, 2 were delicious, 30 were acceptable and the rest were greasy nearly inedible messes.

Yelp
It is SO hard to find good Chinese food in the NE. This place wins hands down for the area. Everything always tastes so fresh. It's like Chinatown was imported to the northeast. Only downsides are no delivery, they're a little pricey and they do not do combo meals so you have to buy everything individually. Their fried shrimp dumplings, pork fried rice and crab rangoons are my go-to's and is highly recommend!
google avatar

Alan K.

Yelp
Solid fare at a reasonable price. Is it the BEST Chinese restaurant? No... if you want that, then get on a plane, fly to San Francisco, and ask the Uber driver to take you to Chinatown. This is pretty decent for Elkins Park, PA.
google avatar

Yelp
First try today. Lunch combos; Sesame Chicken w/ Pork Fried Rice and Shrimp and Broccoli w/ Pork Fried Rice. Very flavorful rice w/ peas. Chicken had a nice crisp crunch under the sauce with a bit of smokey flavor. One of the better Sesame Chicken plates around. Delicious large shrimp and a lovely silky white sauce. Everything had a fresh taste without being heavy on sauce or oil. A sign the shrimp are good; how fast my one cat will eat them or simply walk away. He devoured the shrimp. My personal "Canary in a Coal Mine". Try them for yourself. You have my recommendation!

Karen G.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots! Usually get the Generals Tso's chicken, cold noodles in sesame sauce, egg rolls, meat dumplings. It is pricey compared to a corner store option, but totally worth it and they're very nice and quick!!
google avatar

Jimmy K.

Yelp
Great lunch special with a lot of food for the value. Close to my office so will be getting the lunch specials a few times a month from now on. There really aren't that many options in the area that do it right, this place seems to blow the others out of the water. But the lack of delivery is annoying.
google avatar

Boniface C.

Yelp
I get takeout here at least once a week. All the takeout I get is delicious and a great value. There chicken with eggplant is so good and there beef chow fun excellent. Very quick service never had to wait too long , accurate and I've never been disappointed.
google avatar

Emily E.

Yelp
Some of the best Chinese food around! The restaurant is clean, well-run, and has some beautiful decor and artwork. They have a wide menu that features vegetarian and vegan options, as well as delicious soups and appetizers. My absolute favorite has to be the vegan cashew chicken, but I've never had a bad meal there. If you're in the mood for good, authentic Chinese food, then be sure to head here!
google avatar

Bethany W.

Yelp
I am shocked at the poor quality food we received tonight. The Szechuan shrimp was fishy smelling, and swimming in a red goop with no vegetables other than onions (looks like the nuclear red stuff that sweet and sour chicken is in, except with a couple red pepper flakes. The sesame noodles were plain noodles with thick sauce just sitting on top. Inedible. Egg roll was awful. Never again.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
I can't say it's the best in the area but it's the best I've been to for Chinese. Hot & Sour Soup made the right way. They understand English. That's something they don't do in philly unless the teenage kids are taking orders. It's clean and stuff too. I have a problem with the Spring rolls. They're made from scratch and it's awful that way.
google avatar

Kalle B.

Yelp
I have been eating here literally all my life and I really feel like it's gone downhill in the past year. This used to be my favorite place to get Chinese food and I don't think I'll be ordering from here anymore. The last two times we got food they forgot to put food into our order and the taste of the food we did order and did get didn't taste as good as it used to. They also don't deliver which is a major factor. Disappointing.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
My family comes in here all the time. Food is good. Yes it is a little pricier than some Chinese restaurants but not by much and the food is definitely worth it. Service is fine.

Ling L.

Yelp
I'm upset. I've been ordering from here for years which is why I'm giving two stars. Side Bar: a common trend on Yelp is for people to comment on an establishment when they mess up. Sorry Szechuan but I am doing just that. This was a huge mistake. The first mistake was when I noticed brown rice even though I requested white rice. I let it slide because brown is healthier and this was the first time they made this mistake BUT THE BIG mess up is coming up next. Another Side Bar: I'm a vegetarian. So as I was chowing down on my food, I tasted something funny and chewy. I immediately knew it was meat! I don't know if it was pork or chicken but I was disgusted! I had to spit it out and examine and YES it was meat! When you haven't eaten meat in a while, the taste and texture of meat is equivalent to vomit (for me). I'm really upset because this was my go-to chinese spot.

Yelp
Ordered ToGo from here as I came to pick it up the lady giving me my food was digging up her nose. Ewwwwww never again will I get food from here that is disgusting

Yelp
Awful experience. DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU ARE VEGETARIAN!! I ordered our vegetarian food online.....same address and same phone number. We order there because they have a separate vegetarian menu we thought we could trust. I received a confirmation number. When my parents went in to pick up the food they told us we couldn't order online although we had a confirmation number. They sat for an HOUR while they made our food. They sat patiently until it became absurd. Then they brought out the food and they completely messed up our order. They waited even longer. They finally brought out the food and charged my parents 10 dollars more then the online order stated price. No discount for the long wait. They brought home the food and we started eating. Then we realized the food was NOT vegetarian. My daughter was throwing up! She has been vegetarian all of her twelve years. On top of everything they were really rude! Used to love that restaurant because they had a huge vegetarian menu. I trusted them They told us we had to bring back the food for a refund. We packed it all up and brought it back. The owner never apologized. She argued with us the whole time. she even said there was no online ordering after I I showed her the site and my confirmation to her. When we left she had a smirk on her face and yelled "Merry Christmas!" Never again.

Larry K.

Yelp
Regular stop for us for terrific Chinese food. Very varied menu served hot and well. Service is always good and they have great variety
google avatar

Zachary C.

Yelp
Probably the best Chinese food around. Great lunch special and their general tso chicken is really amazing

Yelp
Food is not badd...service is good too

Yelp
Recommended for fans of: White Bread Unsalted Chips Boiled Hot Dogs Steamed Cabbage Cream Corn It's cornerstore chinese at a sit down spot. If you go in understanding that it's probably ok. Just go to Han Dynasty and never look back.
