"The gigantic menu at Szechuan Spice can be daunting. Start with the classic dishes from China's spice-loving province like ma po tofu and pair with a cup of hot tea to balance that heat." - Eater Staff

We came here with a group of 10 to celebrate our friends birthday. The service was alright but the food was well below standard. It was either too fried, too salty, too cold or just not tasteful. The spices seemed off in most dishes. We were underwhelmed with it all.

We were amazed at the variety and complexity of the dishes we tried. Many of which I had never heard of before. Stir fry dishes were each unique in their own way. Had the Shredded Duck with Ginger and was surprised to find a generous amount of tender, tea smoked duck with delicious sauce and a prominent but not overwhelming ginger taste. The crab balls are a must try! Crunchy exterior with sweet, soft crabmeat inside. Sweet and Sour Fish had bite sized pieces of flounder in a slightly sweet and very savory sauce. It was absolutely delicious! Pehaps one of the most creative menus I've ever seen in a Chinese restaurant. We will definitely be returning!

Location was open for take out but website did not reflect this limitation. That is the main complaint and knock down of a star. I'm annoyed but I fully had my heart set on ordering from this establishment as part of my last day on vacation in MN. Due to food freshness, I was forced into eating this at a bus stop nearby to avoid the rain while enjoying what I could of my meal. I put in a Google request for them to update their listing to Take Out only and remove Dine In as an option. Meal was underwhelming itself. But at least I tried it out.

First of all happy Chinese New Year!! We went for noodles for Chinese New Year and it was as delicious! The texture of the noodles was a little softer than expected but the sesame sauce what on point! Beef was great soft, tender, little heat from the chilis, over all dinner was delicious will come back soon!!!

Love Szechuan Spice. Food has always been well-priced and tasty. But they have been ‘closed for remodeling’ since April. Recently, their sign has changed to Kung Fu Hotpot. Not sure what’s happening exactly.

Start with the Shanghai mini juicy buns, you won’t be disappointed! Next time I will ask for more spice on the Kung Pao tofu.

Food was alright. I tried the Dan Dan noodles since people seemed to like it. I gave it 4 stars since the service was good. We were greeted right away and since it wasnt busy we picked our seats.

Fairly disappointed. In all three chicken dishes that I ordered, we only got chicken skin / fat and no meat. The texture was nauseating.

Yelp
The greater Uptown/Whitter/Wedge area of Minneapolis doesn't have many Chinese restaurants and, with the loss of Evergreen on Nicollet a few years back, I've struggled to find a place to satisfy my cravings for Chinese and/or Taiwanese food. Enter Szechuan Spice, which has been around for a while, and now easily takes the mantle of being THE affordable, above-average, friendly, bulletproof Chinese spot in the area. You can't go wrong with anything you order, though the bamboo tips in spicy sauce ($8) and the Szechuan dan dan noodles (made vegan without pork) ($5.75) both suffer from too much vinegar, in my opinion. The family tofu without pork ($11) is savory and nicely done with scallions and bamboo; the kung pao tofu ($11) and chung king tofu ($11) are both good, spicy and colorful, but don't travel well, as they're fried. The broccoli in garlic sauce ($11) and Szechuan green bean ($11) are highly respectable vegetable dishes; they also sometimes have pea tips when in season, so make sure to ask. Lastly, their vegetable chao fun ($10) and vegetable egg rolls ($1.50) are fine. The portion sizes are large; expect a few meals out of each dish. The service is really friendly and fast. I usually call my order in over the phone, as the staff is good at making suggestions or modifying dishes when I want something custom. They're also extremely vegan-friendly and vegan-aware, so just ask and they'll set you up. Delivery is only $1.50 and they use their own staff for the deliveries, which I've consistently found to produce faster, cheaper and better results than GrubHub/DoorDash/etc.

Yelp
This was the best Chinese in Minneapolis. Double chili pepper chicken was spicy. Real spicy, not Minnesota spicy. Pan fried pkrk dumplings....yum.

Yelp
I have not dined in here (whenever I go to pick up, it seems pretty empty), but the food is prepared quickly, is still perfectly hot when you get home, and I haven't been disappointed yet. My favorite dish to date is the Szechuan Spice Stir-Fry (chef recommended.) They put 2 chili peppers next to it on the menu to indicate spiciness and I would say that is about right - it was clearing my sinuses out, but not too hot to enjoy. It was a good portion with a generous amount of veggies and sauce. They have a wonderful weekday lunch special where you can get an entree, rice, and soup for most of them at ~$7 (depending on what you pick.) Great deal! I need to dine in sometime soon, because the appetizers look good! I'm all about steamed dumplings, but that's not something you order to-go.

Yelp
I feel honored to eat this as my potential Last Supper before this spooky scary election night. I thought long and hard about what I wanted to eat before my possible impending death and my partner wanted this so I went along with it. First of all this place knocked it out of the park with the covid precautions. I attached pics of what the pickup situation looks like. Who in the heck handy person made that setup? So smart and convenient and safe!! Safety first always. And the woman on the other side put on new gloves when she took my debit card, grabbed my food, etc. So many other restaurants are just acting like I trust they wash their hands....Szechuan Spice leaves me with no doubts about safety or cleanliness. and one of my worst fears in life is eating unsanitary food. No joke I am chilled to the bone by that. So honestly 5 stars for this alone. Plus the woman was so friendly she just made me feel good and safe. However it gets Even better. I tried some new stuff tonight. Vegetable dumpling (I always get these but not this style), scallion pancake??? , and then the usual lo mein. Oh and we also got a little cream cheese wonton too mm. Well the scallion pancake was completely out of this world. A little oily but I Loved It. It is salty and cut In triangles which is one of my favorite shapes. Honestly I feel reborn eating that. And the vegetable dumpling,, well it wasn't what I was used to (thicker dough part sorry I don't know what that is called ) but it was good. I got the steamed version to try to act like i'm healthy Lol but next time I'd probably get pan fried because I looked at some pics and it looks hot as hell. Lo mein great. Wish the cream cheese wonton had a little more cream cheese in it but that's just my personal preference and absolutely no reason to remove a star. Adequate sauces which are the best part of any meal in my humble opinion. Thank you so much Szechuan Spice absolutely incredible especially for my last supper thank you thank you thank you

Yelp
My four stars for Szechuan Spice are slightly generous, and it's mainly because a Szechuan joint deserves kudos for pulling off a Shanghainese dish -- soup dumplings in this case. It seems like we've hankered for soup dumplings -- Xiao Long Bao -- since a visit to New York's Chinatown almost a year ago. Some are better than others, but we've yet to find a version that we didn't like. And that includes the version served here. If you're familiar with soup dumplings, you know that they are a Shanghai thing. That a Szechuan restaurant even attempts it is pretty darn cool. These are a little thicker than most that I've had, but were toothsome in an al dente sort of way ... almost like Southern chicken & dumplings. The broth on the inside was an ounce less than most, but it was a delicious slurp nonetheless. The pork morsel on the inside was tasty as well, if not toned down with easy going garlic and ginger. I'm also a huge fan of Ma La Dumplings, which is a legit Szechuan dish. Here they call it Won Ton in Hot Sauce (or Chile Oil ... I can't recall). Either way, the dish is essentially pork dumplings that are drenched in spicy oil with a garnish of toasted sesame seeds. While this version is good, the ginger seemed overpowering. Also, these are served warm. Most authentic Szechuan joints serve it cold. We're starch freaks, so scallion pancakes are a must any time we can get them. The ones here don't disappoint. Unlike so many other places out there, Szechuan Spice actually pan-fries its scallion pancakes. The result is a crispy chewy flatbread with onion-sweet deliciousness. Some folks dip them; I prefer them on their own. Service here is outstanding. While the place wasn't crawling with customers during our visit, I got the feeling that we would have been waited on just the same. Our glasses were never empty and we never ran out of napkins. The atmosphere is rather plain, if not slightly shabby chic. Parking is on the street or across the street in a lot that sits caddy corner to the restaurant. (We parked in a lot adjacent to the restaurant near a hair salon and didn't get towed.) Bottom line: The food here is good, and the menu is extensive. If I lived here, I would likely be a regular.

Yelp
Awesome and authentic sichuan food with or without spice. I would suggest try different dishes off the menu. Many of them are unique and tasty.

Yelp
I made three attempts to call, with no response. Tried to order online, website was slow, and when I finally got to the checkout, you couldn't pay with a card. Downloaded and installed DoorDash since one of my cards has free DashPass, and they weren't on there. I'm not mad, just disappointed. Was looking forward to ordering Chinese, and instead an hour of my life was wasted. If they had picked up the phone, my food would have been here already.

Yelp
Super careful COVID measures; Sichuan food varies from quite good to so-so. I ordered a bunch of food for takeout for a family gathering: -Dan dan noodles--average-to-good; not at all spicy -Dumplings--everyone else ate them enthusiastically; I didn't get one! -Szechuan green beans--average; kind of sweet. Better ones can be found at Grand Szechuan or Hong Kong Noodle -Combo Lo Mein--good, sizeable portion; then again it's hard to screw up lo mein -Chongqing spicy chicken--best thing we ordered; crispy, spicy, satisfying -Kung pao shrimp--a disappointment. Mostly red and green peppers. Saucy. -Cumin lamb--well seasoned, tender, but more sauce than I'd expect. -Broccoli in garlic sauce--Unremarkable but folks who wanted to avoid spicy food liked it. -Boiled fish in Szechuan spicy hot sauce--it's hard to tell from the English menu which one has the numbing and spicy "ma-la" flavor profile so I specifically asked for that when I ordered; this is what the Chinese-speaking employee recommended. Theirs was milder than the version from Grand Szechuan, which appealed to more folks at the table, but I didn't find it as tasty--and it was missing the numbing part of the ma-la flavor profile. Overall my impression is that the food at Szechuan Spice is either cooked by someone from someplace other than Sichuan, or they've tamped down the flavors to appeal to a clientele that might not be accustomed to full-on Sichuan spicing. Worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood but not a trip across town.

Yelp
It was a mixed bag in my latest order from Szechuan Spice. Some items were outstanding, some were lacking in preparation, and others were lacking in quantity. Starting with the best, the Lemongrass chicken (added beef for $2 more) was OUTSTANDING. I got it incredibly spicy and it tasted remarkably fresh. The grilled meat and veggies were not overly oily either, making you forget that you had ordered Chinese and could have easily passed for a home made stir fry. 4.5/5 The black bean chicken (also extra spicy) was odd in preparation in that it was in an incredibly watery sauce. I've eaten my fair share of black bean chicken, and NEVER have I seen it look like this. Not sure if they diluted the paste or what? The taste itself was solid, but all of the juice immediately made the rice soggy. 2/5. On the topic of rice, they only gave us one container of rice (yet wrote a number 2 on there to indicate it was two servings) for the two dinners. My friend and I had to split it up and were each left with more than half of our respective entrees with no rice to accompany. Definitely not a good look. Overall, pretty decent quality food at very reasonable price. Just be sure to ask about the consistency black bean chicken and for extra rice when ordering! Note- it came in cardboard, but we put into Tupperware to eat.

Yelp
Had a friend craving soup dumplings badly so we found this place to eat for dinner. We ordered: Fried crab balls - my favorite item, had a unique crispay breading texture and the filling seasoning was ok Soup dumplings pork and crab - wrap was very thick and the fillings were bland. Both pork and crab had the same filling, maybe one tasted a bit gingery. The crab didn't taste like crab. I guess if you were craving the real deal, this would just have to satisfy you. Szechuan restaurant in Roseville soup dumpling tasted better in my opinion. Dandan noodles (not spicy) - good blend on flavors, most places over do it with peanut flavor Seafood and tofu soup for 2 - not bad for the price and it does feed more than 2, could use a little more salt but overall not bad If you add a little chili oil Orange beef- salty... make sure ask for sauce on the side and dip it!!! Mongolian beef - not as salty, tasted ok nothing special Chicken wings were very crispy and meaty. Would I come here again? Probably not, unless I lived in the neighborhood, then maybe eat it once awhile.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite things about our country is that we don't always have to visit the world to experience the diversity and deliciousness of foreign cooking. We should be exploring the world, but sometimes it is more practical to drive an hour to explore through our taste buds, and I am thrilled to have done so with Szechuan Spice. It was on my radar for almost a year, and I wish I hadn't waited so long, because this place was fantastic. You aren't going to be walking in here to the glitz and glam of some ritzy restaurant. That's not the reason to go somewhere anyway. What you WILL be walking into, is an experience to delight your taste buds, seldom recreated, for me at least, outside of the metro. The authenticity of Szechuan Spice is indisputable, with a range of options not found on a lot of Chinese menus. I am a spice lover, so traditional Szechuan is already right up my alley, but wow, believe me, this is easily some of the best I've ever had. In fact, I struggled to decide what I wanted because so many options appealed. Every bite was an explosion of flavor. I cannot wait to go back and try other dishes, even though I will be tempted to order the exact same plates. A lot of Chinese restaurants will have been ruined for me by how good this one was. Staff, too, should not be forgotten in this review. They were all very helpful and friendly, attentive and courteous. Definitely come check this place out.

Jack G.

Yelp
I love this place, super flavorful and definitely has some oil! The Dan dan noodles are incredible, the wontons are super flavorful and great. The scallion pancakes are dank and the dipping sauce is great. The owners are always super nice to me when I go, you all should definitely check it out! Go check out my Instagram at goodeatsminneapolis!

Yelp
I have heard so many conflicted reviews about the soup dumplings here so I wanted to try it out myself. My friend and I came around 8pm on a Thursday night so the place was not busy at all. The service was good: our waitress was friendly and tentative. We knew exactly what we wanted so we quickly put in an order with the soup dumplings, chili wontons, and lemon chicken. The soup dumplings were pretty good. They dumpling cover was a bit too thick to my liking but the stuffing was moist and flavorful. The vinegar sauce could use a bit more ginger to balance out the sour of the sauce and the saltiness of the dumplings; however, it was a decent dish in general. The chili wontons were actually not very spicy; it has a bit of a kick to it but it definitely not spicy at all. It was also a bit too sweet and lack of spice for a Schezuan dish but I understand that the restaurant needed to adapt to the American culture. The last dish, lemon chicken, was actually pretty tasty. Definitely American Chinese but the seasoning was on point. Even though the chicken was deep fried, it wasn't too oily. The sauce was lemony, sour but not overly sour, pairing very well with the crispiness of the chicken. In general, my favourite dish was probably the soup dumplings, the lemon chicken, and the chili wontons. I wanted to mapo tofu so bad but my friend could not handle spicy food so I told myself I'd come back to try it later. Stay tune for a review for mapo tofu!

Yelp
4 stars since it offers authentic Chinese and Sichuan spicy food until late night! First time here so I ordered classics - cheap prices for the portion size they give 川味牛肉面 川味牛肉麵 Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup $8.95 担担面 擔擔麵 Szechuan Dan Dan Noodle (Large) $7.95 Very oily so I would not recommend drinking the broth/sauce. Both dishes could use more vegetables/greens to balance out the heavy oils. Dan Dan noodles - long strands of noodles that can stretch forever Sichuan Beef noodle soup - beef is very tender and bites off easily as it should be! Lots of seating for a small uptown location. Good for groups as well! They seem to have lots of delivery business so they should get your orders out very fast. Parking Situation is a bit confusing as the street is metered until midnight but nearby stores have a dedicated parking lot.

Yelp
Szechuan Spice offers enjoyable, above-average Chinese cuisine to a Twin Cities that's woefully lacking in quality Chinese options. I came here for takeout, but that might not be the ideal way to experience the restaurant. The prices are a bit higher than I'd prefer for takeout - if you're going to spend your money here, you should probably make it a nice(ish) meal out. Regardless, the food was tasty. The Kung Pao Chicken was a bit saucier than I prefer, but the flavor was still good, and the portion size was generous. I also tried the soup dumplings, since they got so much attention from other reviewers. They were delicious, but also quite inconvenient to eat. They're too large to just eat the entire thing in one bite - but if you try to bite into one, the soup inside goes everywhere! Perhaps I'm just a soup dumpling novice, but I think I'll stick with other dishes in the future. If the price value here was a bit better, I could see myself coming back frequently for takeout or casual meals. As-is, I probably won't be a regular patron, but I'd be happy to come occasionally with a group. If you're looking for a Chinese outing with family or friends, consider giving Szechuan Spice a try.

Yelp
Very solid Szechuan restaurant. You will have to find street parking here, but it is worth the visit. We ordered some soup dumpling they call juicy little dumplings. These were solid, nice amount of hot soup comes out and the ginger vinegar sauce they serve with it is great. Only comment, I can make is they use wrapping that is a little thick compared to other soup dumplings, I have had. We also ordered their chili wontons, these were sweeter than others, I had, not my favorite it had strong black bean flavor as well, but they were fairly good. Their pork dumplings are amazing 5 out of 5, handmade large amounts of pork filling my son could not stop eating them. Their pork lo mein was solid all n all if, I lived here this would be part of my takeout rotation.

Kong L.

Yelp
Came here because they are the few restaurants in Minnesota that serves pork soup dumplings (xiao long bao, or titled as "shanghai mini juice buns" on their menu). So far, I have tried their pork soup dumplings, kung pao chicken lunch special, gui chow chicken, and shanghai wonton soup. I tried their lunch special with kung pao chicken. It came with rice, soup, and one egg roll. Definitely a bang for your buck, but it is not anything amazing or special. It was good though. The gui chow chicken was also good. It is a stir fried dish with chicken, bamboo shoots, and a bunch of chopped red chilli peppers. To my surprise, it does have a bit of spiciness, but it is not overpowering or strong. The shanghai wonton soup was definitely worth it. It is an appetizer for two. It comes in a big bowl with about 8 pork wontons. The broth is not overpowering with flavor in a good way. It was soothing and refreshing, which makes a good sip throughout your meal. The wonton was good, packed a good pork flavor. The highlight for me is the pork soup dumplings (shanghai pork mini buns). The skin is not too thick. The size is not too big. It compact great flavors. The meat ball in it is full of flavor. The soup adds on another soothing flavor of pork. Also, adding the Chinese vinegar adds another flavor and acidity. The only flaw about this dish is that it does not contain as much soup within the dumplings. However, it was still great. I really recommend this dish. So far it is the best xiao long bao in the twin cities that I have tried. Overall, this is a good spot to eat at. I come here with xiao long bao (pork soup dumplings) cravings, and it sure does get fulfilled. Their other entrees are also good. Service varies, but the xiao long bao is worth it. Overall rating is 3.5/4.

Andrea G.

Yelp
Szechuan Spice is definitely the most reliable and speedy Chinese delivery in Uptown Minneapolis. While I do find that some of the dishes are hit or miss, the Szechuan big beef bowl is spectacular. Spicy, aromatic, and full of beef, mushrooms, bamboo and jelly noodles. You get two huge portions plus rice. It makes for brilliant leftovers: add it to scrambled eggs, or a frittata, fry it with rice, etc. I make at least 5 new meals out of the second bowl. The scallion pancakes are also a must-order (get two orders--trust me): chewy, oily, and nicely studded with green. Tea House is probably the best in the city, but if you are heading South, try Szechuan Spice. Skip delivery service. Just call the restaurant directly. They have their own driver and you get the food in 30 mins.

Sue S.

Yelp
Well heck yeah. I waited to write my review until we'd eaten here a few times largely because I wanted to make sure our first experience wasn't a fluke. This place is the best Szechuan Chinese place we've found in the area so far, and unlike some other restaurants with Szechuan in the name, I do not feel like I'm getting ripped off every time I eat here. I'll be honest, the service can range from good to not so good. But the food is always on point. And I will tolerate some mediocre service if the food is this good. First of all, I could pretty much come here and keep myself quite content on appetizers only. Shanghai Mini Juicy Buns are pretty much a must get, steamed delicious soup like dumplings, served hot to your table in a steamer and accompanied by a brilliant vinegary, gingery sauce. I could seriously just order like three orders of these and call it a day. Szechuan dumpling in hot sauce is excellent and only missing some more aggressive garlic in my opinion. Fried pork dumplings are fine but not as good as the other two. Dan dan noodles are good but not exceptional. My favorite entree so far has been the twice cooked pork, which was delicious and crispy. We also liked the pork stirfry and the really yummy szechuan green bean vegetable. I also liked the egg drop soup I had last time, which came with small bits of corn for texture. Not for everyone, but to me a nice touch. We have yet to be disappointed by anything we ordered. One final note: Many of the entree dishes contain these beautiful slices of green pepper, but diner beware! They are almost always slivers of jalepeno pepper and they are wicked hot. I made the mistake of eating one once whole because I thought it was green bell pepper and totally missed the seeds. Look closely and taste carefully if you are not sure!!!

Yelp
This restaurant has been a bright spot in this past year. Whenever I had a bad week, I could count on a FABULOUS order from Szechuan Spice to cheer me up, restore a little bit of excitement and interest, and make me feel nourished and taken care of. I'd eaten there before the pandemic, but the takeout is just as fabulous, the broccoli still arrives crisp, and I've decided I'm using this time to gradually work my way through the menu. I've loved everything!!!! THANK YOU for doing such a great job. PS: You know you've found a great restaurant when you want to order something new because everything's so good, but you also have your favorites that you NEED :) The best problem to have.

Helen T.

Yelp
Omg! How come no one has ever mentioned this place to me before? I have lived in the uptown area for the last year and have walked by this place numerous times and never have I ever heard anyone tell me how good it is. I finally decided I wanted to try somewhere "new", somewhere I haven't been. I was determined to find a diamond in the rough. This was definitely a home run. I saw that only one of my friends had written a review and it was all positive. This place is not busy, actually quite dead when we came but the food was very good. They don't have a huge selection but I definitely need to compliment whomever put the menu together. The pictures were awesome and since there wasn't a huge menu list it wasn't too overbearing. We ordered Scallion pancakes, dan dan noodles, xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and pork chow fun noodles. The scallion pancakes were lightly crisp on the outside but very good, definitely dip into the sauce they give you. I have never had dan dan noodles, at least not that I recall, but it was good. The texture was a little oily but it was fullfilling. I was impressed with the xiao long bao too, they were juicy and not so delicate that I could put it on a spoon and eat it properly. In the past I kept getting soup dumplings that would just break before you can put it on the spoon, oozing all that yummy juice away. So sad. Chow fun was good too. We will definitely be returning and to top that they have take out for $20 minimum charge and $1 delivery fee. That's pretty good.

Yelp
I had been searching far and wide for soup dumplings in the twin cities area for an entire day and eventually landed on Szechuan spice via yelp reviews. I ordered the pork soupy buns (soup dumplings) and the crab soupy buns (basically identical to the pork with a dash of crab roe on top). They had a very thick wrap and contained a minimal amount of soup that lacked flavor. The black vinegar/ginger sauce was good. The other dish I ordered was the dan dan noodles which I enjoyed but was a bit saltier than I prefer. One of my friends ordered the beef and broccoli which I enjoyed more than my own items, but also on the saltier side. My other friend ordered the orange beef which was WAY too salty and over sauced. The sauce was heavy and required eating with a bowl of rice to dilute the intense sauce. The service was decent and the wait staff was polite. My tastebuds were not satisfied so unfortunately I will not be patronizing this restaurant again.

Yelp
My manfriend and I are regulars here. But we've never actually stepped foot in this restaurant. That would require us to a) get dressed, b) navigate Uptown's traffic and c) ruin our phone-only-regulars mystique by actually showing our faces. We eat here more often than anywhere else in the Cities because it is delicious and fresh, affordable, and fast. Their food is good as helllllllllll! Their Kung Pao Tofu! The tofu is fried perfectly, and the sauce is spiced nicely (not spicy as the menu suggests, but definitely a step up from normal bland sauce), and it's packed with water chestnuts and dried chili peppers and peanuts. Their garlic eggplant is perfectly cooked. Their scallion pancakes- as others have mentioned- are the jam. Their steamed veggie dumplings are delish. We've worked our way through the "Vegetable" section of the menu and haven't been disappointed. The portions are enormous. Get an order of garlic eggplant, Kung Pao tofu, and scallion pancakes and you'll be set for two meals for two people. AND: their delivery time is usually 35-45 minutes, and they are ridiculously accurate with those specs over the phone. Like, within 2-5 minutes of when they say they'll be there, they show up. That's insane. I ordered something through Bite Squad the other day and just watched a clock get later and later for no damn reason. THEY DO NOT DO THAT HERE. ENJOY, crew.

Felicia J.

Yelp
My husband and I went to have lunch here! Let me say the food is absolutely amazing and delicious and we will definitely be returning! This style of chinese is way more authentic! I can't stand American Chinese it makes me sick. The food has so much flavor. I highly recommend this restaurant if your into Authentic Chinese.

Avelina A.

Yelp
So, after living in Philadelphia, I became acquainted with a delicious dish called soup dumplings. They're amazing and I dream about them often. A little too often. But ever since moving to Minneapolis, it has been hard to find a restaurant that serves them. Szechuan Spice is the closest we've discovered with their juicy buns! They were the perfect thing on such a cold morning. I could use a bit more broth in these small morsels of deliciousness. We also tried their spicy wontons in chili oil-- the perfect amount of spice! A definite recommendation in my book if you're looking for an appetizer! Finally, the service was very good and attentive. We were actually the only 2 people in the restaurant around noon on Saturday. There were a number of take-out orders though. Anyways, I would recommend this place if you're looking for an affordable restaurant in the uptown area.

Yelp
I had someone tell me this was their favorite place ever, so I obvi had to try it. I ordered a to-go eggroll and General Tao Chicken at his suggestion. The prices surprised me and are high in my opinion.(Egg roll $2.50, med entree $12). The food only took about 10 mins which was nice and it was not the best, not the worst- it was OK. I assumed the quality would be better for the price but it was standard Chinese take out. Not a ton of flavor nor spicy, it was just OK. The menu is very large so I took that into consideration with my 3 stars and would most likely come back and try different things.

Yelp
How did it take me this long to find out that this is the one place in MN that serves damn soup dumplings?!!?!? Probably because they call it juicy buns (insert upset emoji). Who would've thunk it??!? But hold on, don't go dropping everything and running to try the soup dumplings there. As excited as I was that they had soup dumplings (juicy buns), they weren't that great. The dough was way too thick so that was definitely a let down. The taste of the pork and soup inside was good. The dipping sauce, not so good. It seemed like the ratio of vinegar to soy sauce was 2:1. It did not go well with anything. Besides the juicy buns, we also ordered Szechuan spicy dumplings, Chung King Spicy Chicken and Szechuan lamb. All of these were ok. The lamb was super tender but it had a bitter taste to it that I didn't like. The Chung king Chicken was good but not great. The spicy dumplings was not spicy but it was decent. The place was dead when we went which was close to closing time anyways but there were a few delivery services that were in and out picking up orders.

Yelp
I've never had problems with Szechuan Spice, and in fact I don't like it when I go on an off-hour since I think for the taste they should be busy day in and day out! They offer a wide variety with really good Chinese food - I'm not from Sichuan, my family is from Jiangsu, but from what I've tasted of other Sichuan restaurants this is just fantastic. We always order too much, eat it all, and wish we could just keep eating! I particularly like the kungpao chicken, the soup dumplings, and the mapudoufu, if you're unsure what to order, I might shake up the other things I order but I always get those three.

Yelp
Went here with my parents since my dad was raving about this place, so I acknowledge I had high expectations coming in. The place was not very busy the entire time we were there which was a little curious. We started out with some juicy buns, because well...It was fun to say. I was impressed with these. They were hot and definitely juicy as they had a squirt (now I feel like there is no way this paragraph is not seemingly a little scandalous sounding). For the entrees, I ordered the double cooked pork, which I found to be OK. It wasn't anything that I would go seeking after but it wasnt horrible or even bad, just kinda there. I don't even remember what my dad ordered, but it wasnt any thing memorable, thats for sure. My mom ordered the House Special Crispy Beef which is what my dad says he swears by. Now that dish, I did take a taste and I was impressed with it. It was pretty darn tasty, but definitely one I would have to share since its a little on the salty side (but so is most right?). They do have a parking lot but the directions on which lot it is, is a bit of a scavenger hunt in itself. While the food was ok, I can't say I would go out of my way to go back here...but if someone wanted to go, I wouldn't say no.

Yelp
Food: Fairly authentic and pretty flavorful. I had the beef noodle soup, and it was definitely the best I've had so far in Minneapolis. However, their Shanghai steamed buns were a somewhat average attempt; they were clearly thawed and steamed from frozen, not restaurant-made (Shanghai xiaolong buns are supposed to be a flavorful soup explosion, and these definitely wrre not). They were still pretty yummy but nothing spectacular. The fried pancake was also okay-- a little overfried and underseasoned for my liking, but my husband loved it because it was super crispy and just the right amount of seasoned for his liking. He alsk got the dumpling appetizer, which was, in his words, "Just okay." Overall, fair authentic Chinese food and definitely not American-Chinese food. Ambience: Really spacious, clean restaurant with large window at the front. I really liked this place-- it was really clean, even the kitchen (which I peeked into on my way to the bathroom because I needed to do research for this Yelp review, obviously). Service: Really nice waitstaff and prompt with the menu/ordering/check, but in a way that didn't seem too rushed. Also, my husband accidentally spilled an entire glass of ice water all over himself, the table, and floor-- they were super sweet about it. Extra points! Bathrooms: Single-person bathrooms that were really quite clean. I was pleased. Tl;dr: Food was good (not great, but good), restaurant itself was really clean and spacious. Best Chinese food I've had in Minneapolis so far, which... kind of makes me disappointed, but that's a personal problem. I'll definitely be back to this restaurant!

Yelp
First: It is spicy. There Will be a lot of oil. And that oil is most likely going to be red. That is normal of Sichuan cuisine, plus capsacin(chemical that gives spicy food their spice) and other delicious flavors are oil soluble. You will get food covered in oil, and it makes it tastier. If you can get past the oil, you'l get a decent rendition of legit chinese food from a famous province. I've been to the Sichuan province, and have had sichuan food in Chengdu (the capital) so I might be a bit picky. The food I got here pales a bit when compared to the real location, but is still a decent substitute when I'm craving those dishes!l. I ordered chili and pork, and also a chinese cold dish that I unfortunately dont know the English name. I felt the cold dish was decent, but that the ingredients didnt taste like they were in the chili oil enough. The Chili and pork was good; fairly solid dish. I want to try their boiled fish or boiled beef the next time I'm here, but for what I had it seems like this place is a solid 4 stars at least.

Yelp
My husband & I were excited to find that they were open on Xmas as we didn't have plans for dinner & thought take-out, from a restaurant we'd been wanting to try, & a movie sounded like a nice way to spend the evening. I used their online order system for pick-up, but received an error message stating it didn't go through. I tried again, received the same error, called the restaurant to ask if it went through, got a "mailbox full" recording. We were really looking forward to the meal, so my husband drove 20 minutes to place order in person, if needed, & wait for food to be prepared. When he arrived, the hostess confirmed our order was received, & she'd check on ETA, but she never came back. He continued to wait, & noticed people coming in, being seated, & receiving meal, so he asked a man, who appeared to be handling online orders, if he'd find out where they were with our food. He waited longer. Then found the host & asked, again. The man went back & brought out our food, finally. It was 2.5 HOURS since I placed order. Normally, we wouldn't wait that long, but being Christmas, we didn't have other good options. My husband told this to host & asked to have the meal comped--they clearly dropped the ball. He was told the manager needed to okay that. She said "No. You can get a discount next time you come here." My husband also says, "No" & left. We will NOT make another visit there; we will share our experience with friends--& make recommendations to other quality restaurants that use reliable online order systems & take MUCH better care of customers. The Twin Cities have many others from which to choose.

Yelp
I moved here from Wisconsin about 10 years ago. I have been a customer of Szechuan spice since arriving after trying out othe Chinese restaurants in the area. Szechuan Spice is my favorite. They make food from scratch allow me to come up with my own favourites. I don't get Chinese food from any where else. It's a good thing they aren't down the block from me. A few years back our family spent Christmas Eve here, delicious.with family from DC and LA took that as a great input.

Yelp
The mini pork juicy buns 小笼包 are so good. My friend taught me to put the dumpling on the spoon and poke a tiny hole so you can drink the soup that's inside. Also it came with a vinegary soy sauce and it complemented the dumpling really well.

Yelp
First time trying this place for Kung Po Chicken. And after reading the reviews, I was hoping for something spicy and delicious. So I ordered takeout with veggie egg rolls. Now I have eaten plenty of Kung Po meals, but this one looked strange. All of the chicken was grayish in color. Now it could have been dark meat, since I know white meat, but the flavor wasn't tasting right. So I stopped eating it. And the egg rolls weren't really done either. I was highly disappointed spending $16 for this meal. I ended up going to Wendy's instead for a burger & fries! So two stars was all I could give, because I don't eat grey chicken that was sorta fatty tissue like stuff. I just threw it in the trash. So beware trying this dish.

Yelp
So glad I decided to try this place after a recommendation from a friend and an article about Andrew Zimmern's hidden gems. I ordered delivery and was quoted 40 minutes but I think they arrived a few minutes ahead of time which was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the steamed pork dumplings, kung pao chicken, and mongolian beef. The pork dumplings were made from homemade dough which was thick and perfectly steamed but they were lacking pork on the inside. The kung pao chicken was my absolute favorite because the sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. I couldn't put down my fork it was so good, filled with peanuts and hot peppers. The mongolian beef was incredibly flavorful with onions and quality beef, it wasn't chewy like some other Chinese restaurants are. Oh and the portion of rice that came with our entrees will be enough to last a week! This place will definitely be my new go-to for Chinese take out.

Yelp
This place is so so. We were really craving ma po tofu so decided to come here. We ordered 3 dishes - ma po tofu which was so good.. Definetly not authentic. - dumplings was yum! - dan dan noodles was also good but had a weird numbing spice in it.

Yelp
So excited to live a few blocks away from this spot. I don't claim to be an expert on cuisine from the sichuan province, but I do appreciate it when a restaurant that has sichuan offerings on the menu, the food delivers on the spice. The szechuan double cooked pork had the heat and numbing sensations I love from the dish. The dan dan noodles were amazing, although I might ask for some scallions next time. Both items delivered beautifully on the heat and will keep me coming back. Also gonna agree with a lot of the reviews here and definitely recommend the scallion pancakes. They're light, crispy, and well seasoned. I got take out and the covid protocol is great with the way they have the door set up to pick up the food. All contactless. I'm really excited to try the xiaolongbao (aka soup dumplings aka juicy pork buns) once it's safe to dine in. I see some rave reviews, but it's something you gotta eat right when it comes out the kitchen.

Yelp
I liked this place. Didn't love it. We went on a wintry Friday night and it was empty. That said, the staff was warm and friendly, and it didn't seem weird at all. We ordered the cream cheese won tons, the soup dumplings, I got Dan Dan Noodles, and my wife ordered the Mapo Tofu. First of all, the soup dumplings were legit. 10/10 would eat them again. The wontons were just OK, as was he Dan Dan noodle. (Noodles seemed really overlooked and mushy). The Mapo Tofu was different than any I had had, but delicious and a HUGE portion. Overall, I liked it but didn't love it. That said, would eat there again when the craving for soup dumplings strikes again.

Yelp
The fish fillet pot is really good, you can add more things to it for an additional fee though, so price-wise not that accommodating.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese food in the Twin Cities. I lived in mainland China for 5 years and this is the only place where the food actually tastes similar to me-and it's delicious. The food will taste a bit different than your standard American-Chinese sweet and sour chicken that goes by many names, but that's because it is how food from central China is supposed to taste.

Yelp
Best Chinese food I've had in Minneapolis! The soup dumplings are spectacular and the shredded pork with chiles is delicious beyond description. Definitely try this place.

Yelp
Best Chinese in the uptown area! Recently, I went in person and discovered their awesome "authentic" Sichuan dishes! 小笼包、 冷锅鱼片、etc! Dishes that I didn't realize I've been missing since moving here. Everything was very flavorful and seemed homemade, even the soup dumplings! Loved the use of peppercorns in the fish - that's how I know I'm eating Sichuan food. Duck was a little dry but still tasty and we finished all of it. When I first moved here, I mistakenly assumed it was a standard America Chinese takeout place, so was surprised at the higher prices. Don't make the same mistake I did and order general tso's chicken when you can order classic Sichuan food. So glad I actually read their large menu today. Service was kind, accommodating, and timely. Ambiance was average.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. I'm surprised that this place is still in business. Would give a zero if possible.

Gracie W.

Yelp
My dad had sweet and spicy chicken and loved it and the soup dumplings were so tasty. Good enough lighting in the bathroom for a decent selfie. May not be the best but it'll still probably look cute

Yelp
Ok - didn't get the xiaolongbao or the dandanmien, but, whatever, as far as delivery "chinese" goes this place is below average and overpriced. I don't understand how Hunan Pork means stringy pieces of pork floating in an insipid brown sauce with a crap ton of american broccoli. I would urge the cooks at Szechuan to look up Hunan style pork and learn how to make it - or even just watch one of Eddie Huang's many youtube shows about his restaurant and why Hunan style pork front and center on his menu. We also got sichuan dumplings and they were about the same as every other cheaper delivery place. Yet everything on their menu seems to be priced at a dollar or two more. I really have to part ways with other reivewers here, but I expected a lot more from this place and was really disappointed (maybe the blame should fall on Minnesotans, many of whom don't know that well-done Chinese basics like jielan niurou or hongshaorou are some of the most delicious foods in the world): Uptown pricing and bland food. Up your game if you want to be recognized, SS. We can have so much better Chinese food than this, Minneapolis!

Yelp
Szechuan spice is one of my favorite asian restaurants in Minneapolis. They have amazing egg rolls and dumplings. Try the Dan Dan Noodles and the scallion pancakes. Yumm!!

jessica l.

Yelp
Good spot. Vegetarian friendly, I had the tofu and mixed veggies. And tea is 50 cents.

Gavin M.

Yelp
This place is my favorite Asian joint in town! Try the chicken and green beans - super good. These folks are fast a friendly and the food is always hot. Not a fan of how little they cook their broccoli though. Mongolian beef is also fire.

Nicole L.

Yelp
I had the mu shu vegetable and it was AMAZING. It was 2 dinners worth of food. The picture is after I was already full. Highly recommend.
