NYC’s Favorite Chinese Cuisine Is Sichuan — Here’s How It Rose to Prominence | Eater NY

"I learned that this early claimant of true Szechuan cooking listed tea-smoked duck and braised whole carp with chiles among its chef’s specials and, as the city’s first restaurant to “claim full allegiance to Szechuan,” helped introduce more authentic dishes to New York." - Robert Sietsema

Google
We were just visiting the town to pick up our child from the camp. We were looking for a typical college town Americanized Chinese food and found this one on the street. The outside looks hip and it sits between the trendy bubble tea shop. Make no mistake, we had a great authentic Chinese flavors here. We ordered Beef Noodle, Bang Bang Chicken, Combination Friend Rice and Pan Fried Flat Noodle with combination meat. All four of them were so very delicious. They also have Panda Express type of cafeteria style order, but our cook was made to order and ingredients were very fresh. The price was a bit higher than what I would expect from a meal in a college town, but the portions were so generous. Definitely recommend it!

I liked the food. Also the portions are very large for the price. I have tried several of dishes here and all were good. They not only care about how the food tasts like, but also about the deaign when serving them. The food is pretty spicy, so maybe not a good option for people with low tolerance for spiciness. In that case, there are still a few non spicy options, but definitely ask before ordering.

My friends and I had a good time there. We were mostly self-serviced (scan QR code to order and get fountain drinks etc) but staff were friendly and helpful in general. Roast duck tastes OK, authentic, but they can definitely improve on slicing the meat. The duck meat supposed to be a think slice with both crispy skin and greasy meat, but what we got were meat chunks…:( You can order two dishes from the roast duck, we did the soup and it was nice. the fish dish was really nice, not that spicy despite all the red peppers on it. But it could be super salty by the end of the meal, when the soup paste got concentrated after being heated for so long.

We tried the mapo tofu, dry chili chicken and the salted egg yolk tofu. Everything was delicious and fresh! The mapo tofu was our favorite and had a good amount of spice, as did the chicken. Would definitely come back to try more dishes!! Portion sizes are quite reasonable as well, definitely give it a try if you’re looking for solid Chinese food!!

A bunch of friends came after class, ordered a lot of food, and everything tasted great. We had: spicy boiled beef (my favorite! It should be more spicy too), some eggplant (very nice), garlic fish (everyone loved, I’m not a big cooked fish guy), a lamb dish (very tender and good), pigs feet (very soft and tasty), and a spicy cabbage dish (we needed our vegetables). We split the bill which for 7 people was very affordable. Look, the food was good and the service was good. What else do you need?

Google
I always get the mapo tofu and dim sum, but everything seems to be reasonably priced for the portions and it's always very filling and tasty. Highly recommend.

Google
Delicious Chinese food with generous portion size. I would definitely recommend scrambled egg with shrimp.

I'm from Hong Kong and I really enjoyed this restaurant. Food tastes authentic! It's clean and the staff are friendly. Scan code in restaurant to order, which is easy peasy! The portion can be just a tad small considering the price, so I hope they can improve on that aspect. We especially loved their salted egg yolk tofu and the double fried intestine. So good!

Yelp
Had one lunch there recently. Ordered a 4 entrée lunch box and a cup of egg drop soup. The total price was $14.95 (lunch box was $12, as of 06/2023) with tax, pretty friendly! The food was Okay but definitely not amazing. The bok Choy and broccoli were great and healthy as they did not contain much oil. The pork rib and beef were Okay. The rice was too hard and chewy, as if it had not been fully cooked. The egg drop soup was really not authentic, with pretty thick texture. There did not seem to have service. In fact I did not see a single server in this restaurant. As some previous reviewers suggest it is a place to eat and leave lol. Still, because of its low price I would like to give it 4 stars.

Yelp
I ordered a House Special Dry Pot Combination. It was good, but it had too much oil underneath. It was a little expensive, as it contained not so much food, while it cost me more than 25. The serving people were nice tho.

Yelp
ordered xiao long bao and fried rice. it was good but i received multiple eggshells in the egg of the fried rice. it wasn't just one but multiple large pieces.

Yelp
Overall, the food is good but not that spicy. Even the items that were supposed to be spicy. Still delicious and flavorful but I just wish they were a bit spicier. Tables were set up for a nice dinner with friends. Open layout.

Yelp
Very mixed feelings on this place... Food: Irresistibly yummy, but not the healthiest. Service: Quick, but lacking any personality or warmth. You order your items though an app and "food runners" bring them to you. Ambiance: Pretty absent of any charm; just a place to eat and leave. Value: Outrageously overpriced.

Yelp
Stopped by since it was convenient to and was a bit disappointed. For the quality and taste of it, the food was a bit overpriced I'd say. The orange chicken was not the best orange chicken I've had. The fried noodles lacked flavor and were very bland; they didn't look like the photo on their website. Would not get again. However, the soup dumplings were good. All in all, I'd probably not come back again.

Yelp
If you're looking for that meal, you know the one you get when you've just broken up with your partner and need to drown yourself in salty, spicy, greasy, fill that emptiness in the pit of my stomach now with a healthy dose of instant (but fleeting) dopamine hit. THIS IS IT. Not many are used to the self order and pay online style, but this is actually quite nice if you're eating and crying and trying to stay incognito with no makeup on and old gym sweats with snot stains. No that's not what I wore or did here, but that's the point. No one would ever know!! Everything was okay. Nothing thrilling. You don't need that kind of excitement just yet. But nothing terrible either that will make you furious on top of heartbreak causing more tears.

Yelp
Don't bother going here. Overpriced and the food was awful. I tried both the sesame and sweet and sour chicken and they both tasted like they came from a gas station. The aesthetics lures people in like it did us. Save your time and money and go to Golden Harbor that's 100% worth it.

Yelp
非常地道的川菜,第一次去,不知道热门菜,就都按自己口味点,居然每道都很好吃,没有踩雷的。服务也很贴心,上菜很快,总之味道,服务和性价比都甩芝加哥中餐一百条街。

Yelp
service was awful and ordered so many plates worth 120 including a tax and fee?? we received a plate ONE BY ONE and not as one whole table like everyone around us

Yelp
3 of us ordered 5 dishes: stir fried eggplant, stir fried green beans, mapu tofu, stir fried beef, and chili chicken. All of them were very tasty. My favorite was eggplant. You can't go wrong here. Especially if you like spicy food. Will be back next time in town.
