We have been going here for years regularly. Quintessential home town spot where everyone knows each other. 😊 Great place to get food if you're a local or going up and down the hill...

Stopped at T J’s Roadhouse to grab a quick breakfast before getting back on the highway. T J’s is situated in a very convenient location right off of HWY 80. Was seated right away and was served a drink within a couple minutes of sitting down. Dining room and tables were clean. Food came out quickly. My omelette was hot and delicious. The servers were friendly and efficient. Great place to eat!!

First time visiting quiant place food is good too. Right off Interstate #80 easy to find.

Enjoyed delicious burgers. Service was a bit slow when we were in on a Sunday evening.

Hungry? Well if you happen to find this place you won’t be disappointed. My wife had the chicken fried steak and I had the biscuits and gravy. Both dishes tasted great. The coffee was also just as tasty.

Clean restaurant and friendly service plus delicious breakfast. I had the Carnitas omelette and if you like carnitas you will love this omelette. My partner had a Breakfast Cristo Sandwich which he almost licked the plate it was so good.

This was one of the worst burgers I’ve had in a long time. I ordered a double burger with extra cheese and it was nearly inedible. The meat had zero seasoning, there was an absurd amount of lettuce, and there were no condiments at all, making it dry and flavorless. The bun was too small for the burger, so the entire thing fell apart the moment I took a bite. Everything slid out, leaving a mess instead of an actual sandwich. Paying almost $40 for this is ridiculous. Colfax already has very limited food options, and choosing this place over McDonald’s or Taco Bell and wishing I had gone there instead says everything. I won’t be coming back.

This place is definitely the highlight of our stay in Colfax. This restaurant is right off the highway and it has great parking, good vibes and great cooking. The portions are huge, which was a pleasant surprise! My friend and I were staying in the area and we wanted to eat somewhere with good food options to fuel us for the trip ahead! We came for dinner and my friend had a burger and I had the chicken strips with buffalo sauce. The chicken strips were a standard size portion and just enough food for me, but the burger was an enormous meal! My friend could only eat half of it and had to take the rest home. Good place for good food and fast service! We would definitely come here again if we are in the area or driving through.

Don't know what I expected, but they surpassed it. Think the white gravy may have been hamburger vs. sausage, but it didn't stop me from devouring my breakfast. Definite stop when next through the area. Wait staff extremely good at their job!

Decided to stop and get a bite to eat before getting too far up the road and saw a billboard that said this place. Place wasn't busy as we got there before lunch rush, I ordered a diet chin burger (1patty) which was more than what I could finish so I came home with half a burger. Fries were nice and hot/crispy. Service was nice, friendly and attentive. Would definitely be back next time through to try another delicious meal.

Really good breakfast with quick service on our drive up the 80 freeway. Dog friendly too! TJ's scramble (4/5) delicious mix of veggies with egg and ham. Hash browns were perfectly crispy. I had this with French toast which was okay. I liked the pancake more. * I did ask for jalapeños on the side and was charged $1. FYI. New York steak and eggs (5/5) Cooked perfectly for my husband with scrambled eggs. He got a pancake on the side and that was also delicious. Place has a cool vibe to it. Bill came out to $46 for 2. Coffee was okay. Id probably stop by if we were in the area again.

We went here for breakfast before going to Reno. Prices are pretty good and the breakfast isn't bad either. Our friend had the chili omelette, I had the 222 and my bf had the eggs Benedict. So if your going to Reno stop by and have some breakfast.

The ambience was excellent. We really enjoy it. There was three of us. We were sat very quickly, and our drink orders were taken care of quickly. It seemed like forever before they took our order, which gave us plenty of time to look over the extensive menu. I went with the bacon wrapped meatloaf that has a disclaimer that it contains pork. That's funny. One in my party had a breakfast plate. Took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive which is fine because you don't want your food at a restaurant too quickly, it means that it was pre-prepared The food was excellent and another person in my party. Really enjoyed our bacon wrapped meatloaf sandwiches. Would definitely go again, but maybe avoid peak lunchtime

Tj out did themselves this time with the steak sandwich. The service was great, I could not ask for better . My GF got the beef dip and she said it was great. I want to add that the bread they used was perfect - seems like they upped their bread game, solid move. Until next time - TJ's is the spot

We haven't been here in almost a year. I wish they had all day breakfast otherwise I think we wouldn't have waited this long. This time our visit was redeemed since the last time. They must have changed up their bread because our sandwiches were SO GOOD and made us remember why we use to love coming here. The last time the sandwich bread crumbled and fell apart causing a big mess but the bread this time was big and soft and made our sandwiches much better. My beef was a little dry and beef jerky but the au jus and the soft bread made up for it. After a day of mountain biking and a long drive home I couldn't resist getting the best bread pudding that TJs makes. Please please consider ALL DAY BREAKFAST!!!

This place has the best burgers. My favorite is there Chili Burger, best I've had! Great place to stop by if you are driving to Reno from the Bay Area.

TJ's Roadhouse, located in Colfax, CA has been serving amazing breakfast, lunch and dinner to Colfax locals, and travelers along busy Interstate 80 for the past 15 years or so. The restaurant has become a Placer County icon, and is noted for serving one of the best breakfasts in the Gold Country. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be welcomed by a "Please Wait to be Seated" sign, but on this Tuesday morning the dining room was lightly seated, and the friendly hostess simply waved and greeted me with "Seat anywhere you want to." I sat at the bar, which is where I prefer to sit when I dine solo. The large dining room is comfortable, and in keeping with the Gold Country atmosphere of the town of Colfax, is decorated like the town... very rustic. The decor features many mounted animals, photos, posters, beer signs and lots of "Americana," along with countless American flags. I love it! From my seat at the counter, I was able to watch the friendly staff in action, and chit-chat as their time permitted. I was also offered a glimpse into the kitchen through the order pick up window. From the "Meat Lover's" section of the breakfast menu, I went with tri-tip, hash brown potatoes, two eggs along with sourdough toast. You get to choose between hash browns, home fries for your potatoes, and toast or pancake for your side. The menu offers many other options at an additional cost, including biscuits and gravy. The "star" of my delicious and hearty breakfast was the tri-tip; a tender cut of "Certified Angus Beef," which made for a great cut of beef for breakfast. The generous serving of beef was perfectly seasoned, marinated and grilled medium - my hostess didn't ask for my preference - and was juicy, tender and simply delicious! The generous serving of beef was cut into large bite-size pieces, which allowed for the marinade and juiciness to showcase, and was fork-tender, so the cutting knife was simply window dressing. I used my fork to cut each piece of meat into smaller sizes, which always seems to work for me. The reward: One bite into a piece of the tender beef, and I was rewarded with perfect flavor, a rush of juices, and a taste that I'll remember for a long, long time. It's always a difficult decision to choose between home fries or hash browns, but today I went with hash browns and I truly believe I made the right choice. The generous serving of hash browns were perfectly fried to a crispy, golden brown on the outside, and tender white inside, which made for a perfect side dish, and perfectly prepared hash brown potatoes. The chef has talent! The two eggs are fried "your way," using butter, and I went for sunnyside up, as when eggs are fried on the "sunny side," they blend perfectly with hash browns. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and worked well with the hash browns. I placed the eggs on top of the hash browns, added a dash or two of Cholula Mexican hot sauce, and simply ENJOYED the amazing diner cuisine! The two pieces of sourdough toast were on the thick side, toasted perfectly and coated with the right amount of real butter. They made for the perfect way to sop of every bit of goodness from my breakfast. If you're in the mood for a superior breakfast, look to TJ's Roadhouse. The "Americana" diner cuisine is simply delicious, and the portions are large. No wonder TJ's was voted by the Auburn Journal as the "Best of the Best" in 2019 for casual dining in Colfax! My breakfast was simply amazing. Tri-tip was the main attraction to my breakfast, but the side of hash browns was as good as it gets, and the fried eggs were delicious. This breakfast was as good as it gets, and kept me satisfied and happy all day. I simply enjoyed a salad for dinner at home, as when it came time for dinner, I was still moderately full. Great food, HUGE quantities, a rustic, comfortable dining along with friendly staff make TJ's Roadhouse a 5-star diner!

My boyfriend and I were just there on Wednesday. He got the steak and i got a pizza Its amazing! The food was great , the atmosphere was nice and sever got a good tip. I recommend this place in Colfax to anyone interested in a good meal. Oh cant forget the beer. And long island ice tea. Good stuff .

Our holiday visit to Colfax started with an amazing breakfast at TJ's.locals rave about the steaks and other dinner entrees and I can't wait to visit again! Be warned- their portions are HUGE! We ordered the chicken fried steak that comes with two eggs, toast, and home home fries. Figuring we would definitely have to split that, we ordered a side of bacon, because well... bacon! All of it was amazing! seriously everything was great! Susan, our waitress, was the best! Great conversation and excellent service. This place was really comfortable to be in as well. Don't miss this spot if you're in the area!

Food, service, ambiance, all of the above. Five stars, will be stopping here again. Tri tip scramble - perfect Philly omelette- perfect Pina colada - perfect. Thank you for the great experience!

Great comfort food and cold beer, I always get the patty melt, best one around these parts.

Breakfast was well portions plates, with so many options. The most memorable was my Cocktail for brunch which was called a HOT TODDY. I brought so many memories of my Step Grandmother . It was a cinnamon infused Whisky, with honey and lots of lemon. I'm sure many people who stop by after hitting the ski slopes make this their go to drink. We were fortunate to meat the manager and was given the history of the restaurant. I'm told that Halloween is a special time to go and enjoy the ambiance. We were there while the crowd was on their lunch break. Food got to us quick and efficiently. I'm glad I finally stopped by.

The split pea and ham soup had a lot of pepper which gave it a kick and was pretty good. The caramel bread pudding was soft and warm and very enjoyable to eat but would have been great with vanilla ice cream. The steak was tough and i was only able to eat less than half of it.

TAKE OUT ONLY Driving through and was craving some breakfast burritos. This is the place to go! Classic breakfast burrito - massive and delicious and tons of items inside Mexican breakfast burrito - just as massive and tons of flavor the burritos are more than enough for two portions. Keep in mind since the size is big the price tag is a little bigger as well - $14 per burrito. BUT I would 100% go again. Did go inside to use the restroom which was very clean and the patrons that were there gave off a very friendly vibe. Plenty of parking.

TJs for dinner tonight where our Excellent Server Jessica whipped up the perfect Strawberry shake with chocolate drizzle... Thoms favorite. Awesome Bacon Cheeseburger and side salad with homemade Bleu cheese dressing too! Jessica is the Master of Milkshakes- the Milkshake Queen. Thanks Jessica! Keep up the good work. We'll be back.

Delicious dinner on a Wednesday night. My husband & I just moved to the area, and decided to adventure out. I had the steak sandwich (thank you prior yelp reviewers), and my husband had the California-type burger with egg & avocado added on their homemade onion bun. Umm, do yourself a favor and get the onion bun--delicious & so soft. The steak sandwich was great, and so large I get to have the other half for lunch today : ) We also had the homemade blueberry lemon bread pudding for dessert & it was incredible. I just finished off the rest with my coffee this morning. Our waitress was lovely, and had great recommendations as well. Can't wait to go back soon! Thanks TJ's!

Ordered the beef dip and pastrami sandwiches. Pricy and both sandwiches were dry. The pastrami lacked of classic seasoning. Could have used a pickle on the side. Garlic fries and onion rings were tasty. House ranch was great. Place was getting busy in the evening and waitresses were really nice.

We are local residents and we really wanted to like TJ's. It would be great to have a local, reliable place. Sadly, we won't be going back. The food, service and ambiance is average... at best. My Caesar Salad was iceberg lettuce with some croutons and pre-packaged Parmesan cheese, and an odd tasting, peppery dressing. I couldn't finish it. My wife couldn't finish her fried chicken dinner. Didn't like the seasonings on the chicken. The side salad was average, with a mushy tomato. On the upside, my son said his pulled pork sandwich was good. And the french fries were good. The place has a wooden floor which bounces when people tromp by, and the window view is either "parking lot" or "Interstate". The service was very slow, and the reason was there were only two cooks and two waitresses. All looked like they were working very hard but they were understaffed. The waitresses were friendly and nice, but overworked. The waitress only charged me 1/2 for the salad, even though I didn't ask her to do that. That was nice but I'd rather have a good salad. Sorry TJ's... can't recommend.

Expansive menu, delicious food especially the battered fries, wonderful and friendly service - the perfect road trip stop!

A family member, who hasn't visited for a year, recommended this place to me, and I decided to stop by with them on our way to Tahoe. I was excited to try the homemade onion bun, as I am always drawn to anything homemade. Food Experience: They ordered their usual and opted for onion rings, which they had enjoyed during previous visits. However, they found that the onion rings were not crispy or fresh, and were instead dry and hard (I even sampled them myself). The batter was also strange and not up to their expectations. They noted that the sandwich bun was thin and odd, unlike what they had experienced before. While they understand that changes may be made in an effort to improve, these changes did not meet decent standards. The food seemed to be cooked with a lack of enthusiasm from the chef. A friend of mine joined me for lunch and ordered a BLT sandwich. Unfortunately, the sandwich was not prepared well. I also took a bite and found that the sourdough bread was really dry, and there was very little bacon. My friend was disappointed with the food as well, especially considering the price of the sandwich. We both felt that it would have been better to make it ourselves. This was their usual order, so the experience was particularly disappointing. I decided to order a burger with a homemade onion bun, garlic cheese fries, and a cup of tea. The tea was fresh and satisfying, but the burger was disappointing. Although I initially enjoyed the burger, I discovered a long dark brown hair embedded in it that did not belong to me. My hair is black and short, so this was concerning. The fries were mediocre at best, as shredded cheese was thrown on top without being melted, leaving me with cold cheese shards all over my fries. The only redeeming factor was the homemade onion bun, which was light and had a pleasant taste. However, after finding the hair in my burger, I was unable to continue eating. The Service: On a quiet day with only a few customers, we experienced poor service at the restaurant. The blonde waitress appeared disinterested in her job and lacked empathy. Initially, her service was adequate, but when I showed her a hair in my food, she did not apologize and simply asked if I wanted another tea before walking away to bring the bill. While she did give us a discount, her attitude was indifferent, and I felt unwelcome. Although I understand that mistakes happen, I have never encountered such a cold response from a server before. As I walked past the kitchen, I overheard a group of young chefs laughing. While it's perfectly fine to have fun at work, the way they were preparing the food gave the impression that they were only there for the paycheck. If you don't have a genuine passion and care for food, it may not be the best choice of career. Perhaps fast food would be a more suitable fit. I'm disappointed that I didn't visit this place sooner, as I had heard such great things about it. Unfortunately, it seems as though the original team is no longer in charge, which is a shame as it may lose its charm, particularly for the locals who don't have many food options close by. While I hope things improve, we won't be returning for the time being. I would suggest saving your money or looking for a new spot. However, it might be worth checking out their amazing beer, so we still left a generous tip. I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 as it is not too terrible. Perhaps we just came on a bad day. However, there are still some homemade items available, and the atmosphere is quite cool.

Stopped here on our way back home, and wow. These burgers were amazinggggg! I ordered the Clownifornia with avocado instead of guacamole. My bf got just a standard burger and added avocado & bacon with grilled onions. We both ordered garlic fries. Good thing we took our order to go and ate outside because these burgers were SO BIG & SO JUICY they were dripping everywhere SO MESSY & DELICIOUS. 10/10 will definitely stop back by on our next trip through here :) Both of the pics attached are just of my Clownifornia, I didn't get to take a pic of our other burger.

Such an amazing find in Colfax. Passed it a 100 times and never made a stop until today. If you have not made the trek I would encourage you to do so only if you're looking for amazing food, service and atmosphere. I will be back soon.

This place has been a traditional stop for us for years whenever we go to North Lake Tahoe. We've come here with friends and family and we will keep coming back! The food is good, serving sizes are very generous, the wait is always reasonable, staff is helpful, and location is perfect right off the freeway to pop in to eat and pop right back out to continue on your road trip!

Always great food and service! Susan is always attentive and friendly:) I have tried 10+ different things on this menu and I'm never disappointed.

SIL and I stopped here Sunday night on our way back to Reno from 6 Flags Vallejo. We were tired HUNGRY and cranky from driving but as soon as we stepped inside TJ's were greeted by the warmest atmosphere and it lightened our moods! We were sat immediately and ordered chili cheese fries to start, which were flavorful and ooey gooey. I could have eaten a whole bucket of them. For entrees I chose the Spotted Owl (on homemade onion bun WOWZA) with a side of MORE chili cheese fries and SIL chose the Pepper burger with garlic fries. Everything was delicious, well flavored, well prepared. Every person working here was friendly and attentive, even when I spilled Ranch dressing all over the floor (still sorry about that!) My only grievance is it's so far from where I live, because this place ROCKS.

Red pizza sauce has zero flavor and definitely is in need of some salt. Are usually stop at this restaurant from Reno. On my way to Sacramento religiously. I always get the burgers and the server said that they were well known for their pizzas so this time I got the margarita pizza. if it wasn't for the oregano in the basil on the pizza, this would've had no flavor. I would have given this restaurant three stars if it wasn't for the wonderful staff that they have. They do have some of the friendliest servers and I really appreciate that. I had gotten my pizza to go and jump back on the road to eat along the way. Otherwise I could've just salted it myself. So word to the wise get a side of salt with your pizza if it has the red sauce, but if I could recommend go five minutes more on I 80 W. to Newcastle. There you will find a really great pizza place, if not more than one.

Check out this great little spot in the foothills of the Sierras. The patio is a nice place to catch a meal. I had the delicious spotted owl sandwich in the fresh made onion bun. The flavors really hit the spot and the chicken was moist. It wasn't greasy or soggy and the fries were crispy and tasty. Worth a try.

This was the best meal I had in my meal to california. They sat us immediately and all the food was incredible!! The owner personally served us and I was surprised at how kind, personable and professional his whole staff was. The ambiance was wonderful. Check it out if you are in the area :)

The food is good. I didn't appreciate the 2nd amendment paraphernalia. Obviously, their right to express their opinion on such a divisive issue, but I won't be going back.

Great service, we loved our waitress! It is not very common that you get great customer services days, and she met above and beyond. The food is fantastic if you are a meat eater and the atmosphere is very casual.

I love the burgers here! I've tried the steak and it was not great. It tastes like it came right out of the freezer. I've had the chicken alfredo, and it was pretty decent. I've had breakfast here and it was decent. I'll always come back for the burgers

Food was good especially after "roughin' it" for a few days. Definitely needed coffee and a good hearty breakfast. The service took a little long but the waitresses were very nice and attentive.

Terrible food, waitress lied about how great the "homemade" buns were. Tasted like Hellen Keller made buns for the first time. Canned chili frozen fries, canned jalapeños, freaking minced garlic out of a jar on the fries. Unsatisfied and over priced. 200$ for 5 people. Go to McDonald's across the street

Only reason it's a 4 is that they were short on help , manager was cooking and there weren't enough wait staff to handle crowd. Food, once our order was taken and arrived, was very good. We each got something different so we could try more dishes. There was nothing we wouldn't order again. Their special desert was complimentary, due to the length of time it took to order. We didn't have any problems the next time we came and food was just as good!

WOW ! What a great find. The breakfast chicken fried plate was large and delicious. Absolutely worth a stop right off interstate 80.

Sounds more rugged than it is, but the food every time I've eaten there has been delicious and fresh. The burgers and onion rings have got to be the main reason I go there. They do you have a Bar, and I've had their bloody Mary which was different because they use sake instead of a vodka like most places do. Still it was pretty good. I recommend this place to any passing by or who lives close. Great food and great service!

The food is good for a diner. The staff is friendly. But on 2/3 of our visits we have been told upon walking in that we can come in if we want, but there is a long wait for food, and they aren't kidding. There's even a long wait to order. Last visit we received tater tots that were so hard they were inedible. On this visit, or order was missing something, but the food was decent. I think this could be a cool little restaurant if they were sufficiently staffed. They are just totally overrun and need more help. Oh and also to keep customer's dogs off the tables... I saw a chihuahua literally climbing on a table tonight. I mean, I know it's casual roadside Colfax, but come on people.

This place was horrible,no service at all, got charged for water and no food but still charged for it,even though we never got any food period, anyways I will never go there again ever.

Oh, how I wish we lived closer! The family & I stopped here on the way home from Reno for a late breakfast & it was just fabulous! When you walk in, it feels like a "hole in the wall" kind of place, but give it a chance! They have the BEST biscuits & gravy I have ever tasted. We also had the carnitas omelet & pancakes. Everything was delicious! The service was great! Markers & coloring pages for the kids! Definitely will be back if we are ever in the area.

Just keep driving. I read their reviews. We were seated promptly and thou the waitress was at the next table it still took 20 minutes to get her attention. Food was not that good, I wished it was. McD's is across the road

We love TJ's Roadhouse. The whole family goes there 2x per week almost every week. In two years I ordered the Soup du Jour and NEVER had one I didn't like...actually LOVE most of them. The Meatloaf is real good and the Spicy Shrimp Pasta is excellent. Their "sister" Mexican restaurant, Madi's is great too!
