The 10 Best Burgers in Jacksonville | Eater Miami

"This local favorite housed inside a converted gas station in Fernandina Beach sells burgers starting at just $4, piled high with the usual suspects: lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. The toppings are kept simple in order to highlight the perfectly cooked patty, which can make for a messy meal in the best kind of way. Make sure to ask for a lot of extra napkins."

Google
Repurposed gas station that makes some of the best black eyed peas I have ever eaten (and I have lived all over the south). Many places don’t know how to make good collards. OMG delicious here! I don’t know where to start with the fried chicken. You get a choice between white or dark meat. I prefer dark because it’s more flavorful and usually moist. Home run at T-Rays! The rest of the table had white and all enjoyed it. The broccoli salad was perfect as was the slaw. Small container but definitely delicious. I almost forgot the delicious biscuits!!! Recommend this place to everyone. Don’t let the exterior put you off. The dive exterior belays the Gastro delight inside. I want to go back and try the shrimp. I overheard a client talking about the delicious hush puppies.

Great service, delicious burger. Sweet tea was good too. Line was long when I walked in but I didn't wait more than 7 minutes or so. My food was brought to my table in 10 minutes you

We've eaten here several times since moving to the area. It was recommended by a local while walking on the beach. The food is delicious. The ladies and staff are super sweet. We love eating outside. If we want lunch we have learned to come in around 11a. They take your name and invite you to a drink while you wait. For those who are complaining, this is island time. Chill out. Relax and slow down. This isn't the drive thru at a fast food joint. This is our go to. Today, the fish sandwich was delish as well as the salad with grilled Mahi. Hubby had the hot dogs. We've also had breakfast and equally delicious. Try it out.

We came down for a short weekend, trip on memorial day weekend 2024 found this place on TikTok and Google. The customer service service is absolutely 10 out of 10. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and the environment and atmosphere was amazing. Everything was super clean. the food is absolutely to die for my wife and I had a absolutely wonderful breakfast Hats off to the owners we wish and prosper business. Thanks for the memories.

Small local casual breakfast and lunch place. Quick service and good food!

Loved it. Went twice in one day. Perfect. I arrived at opening and joined the queue as they turned the key. It was kind of like that Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode. There’s a bit of a procedure to ordering. No worries though, there are plenty of regulars around who know what they’re doing. The lady who took my order was an absolute delight. Great food, great service. Worth a trip.

Google
Googled places to eat in Fernadina Beach, and this one came up. The concept of it being an old gas station appealed to us, so we stopped. We were not disappointed. Old station with picnic tables outside. I thought parking was going to be an issue, but it wasn't. Yes, as we entered, we saw the long line, but as others have stated, it goes quick. You could tell there were many locals there, so that's always a good sign. The food was really good and at reasonable prices. I saw food on plates that I didn't see on the menu, so it looks like I missed looking at the daily specials. Overall, nice little spot. Would definitely stop again, when in the area, to try different menu items.

Google
Very good! This place is so cute and I love how they made the food business out of a old gas station! The kids meal is a pretty good price for only 6$. We got chicken tenders, fries, and a drink on the kids meal. Then, I got the little T burger combo which was a normal size burger and I was very surprised. It was 3$ less than the other bigger burger and it had 2 burger patties. Overall, this place was very creative and delicious! I recommend this place for people who are traveling and want to grab some sit down food that you will enjoy.

Yelp
First visit T-Ray's snd it was a pleasant surprise. Small hometown feel, friendly staff and laid back atmosphere. I had a Little T-Burger and fries and it was fresh and tasted awesome. If you want a good burger, this is your place.

Yelp
Food was fresh and very tasty. Will recommend for a quick lunch. Outside and inside seating and the service was fast and friendly. This local gem is something to behold.

Yelp
Many locals recommended T-Rays, and we can see why! We came for breakfast and wished we also had time to return for lunch. Simple breakfast items with a homemade touch! Not pictured were biscuits which are a must have here; If you stop by, just try them at least!

Terry G.

Yelp
Best fried shrimp! I live on St Simons Island and my wife and I go to Amelia Island often; this is a must stop for us. The staff is wonderful and the food is outstanding! Their breakfast is really good but the fried shrimp is absolutely the best. It can be crowded, usually with locals, but it is worth it. Come as you are and sit outside and enjoy the Florida sunshine.

Yelp
Such a cool vibe! Great burger. Great mahi sandwich. A must visit for the local atmosphere. Kid friendly!

Yelp
Honestly one of the best diners I've eaten in !!! The food was fantastic... The preparation was really good and the portion size was generous. I love how the place has been set in an old gas station. You better get cinnamon rolls early because when they sell out, there are no more and they are fabulous. The staff is very friendly, helpful and seem happy to be there. This is a don't miss if you're in the Fernandina Beach area.

Yelp
Hadn't been in a while, but I was on GranDawn duty and my grandson goes practically every morning (he has a "usual"!) before going to school. Food was as great as I remembered! Loved all the old photos on the walls for "remember when's" and seeing the "meeting of the minds" crew. Service was fast & friendly which is one of their trademarks!!

Yelp
I was on a little exploratory trip with my mom, and part of that trip was to go through Fernandina. Well, it just so happens that our favorite burger restaurant just happens to be right there on the main drag, so of course we had to stop and get ourselves something to eat! I am here to report that the quality is still top notch when it comes to burgers here. Mine was excellent, and the fries that came with my burger were good too! The staff were friendly and helpful, even with the lunch rush happening. We got a nice table just inside the front door, and happily enjoyed our burgers amongst the hubbub of conversation going on around us. We will definitely be returning.

Yelp
We are new to the area. So many locals that we have met recommended this unique place. Went for lunch on a Friday. It was packed. They had fried shrimp as a Friday special. We ordered the shrimp platter and a fish sandwich. We don't have much fried food but both were outstanding.
google avatar

Yelp
The best restaurants have 3 things: interesting history, ambience and great food! T-Rays has them all! This multigenerational converted gas station is where the locals go for breakfast or lunch. My favorite is their burgers! Can't be beat! This has to be the spot you have to visit if you come to Amelia Island!

Jamie J.

Yelp
Great burgers and friendly service. Cheeseburgers were amazing. Highly recommended. Convenient location

Darryl S.

Yelp
Great burgers. Fairly priced and quick service. It can get very crowded at lunchtime and parking and seating can be a challenge.

Bruce T.

Yelp
Went for breakfast, very nice classic morning fare with good hash browns, which are not easy to find on the island. Great service and a funky atmosphere added to the experience. Coffee was on the Church Lady side of the spectrum for my taste, but overall I'm planning on going again, need to try the burgers next time.

Yelp
This place absolutely rocks. Breakfast is fantastic. Food is outstanding. Service is friendly and fast. Just be aware of the business this place gets. Small store , limited parking. It's worth the wait

Yelp
This is a tough review for me as i know T-Rays has been noted as the best burger in the area. Well this burger was so bad that I spit out the first bite and was unable to eat it. Why oh why you would season the meat like that?? What the heck. I cant even describe it. I guess I just love a good burger with simple salt and pepper, and smashed on a seasoned flattop. We also ordered the shrimp platter, it was good but the more we ate, the more we saw the huge black poop vein. I know this is safe to eat, but I prefer to have my shrimp cleaned before I eat it. And who puts pickles in coleslaw, they do. UGH! I will leave this place to the locals.

Bob W.

Yelp
This place is a must if you are visiting and like hamburgers. It's a little hole in the wall place, but they do a whole lot of business. All the food is excellent.

Yelp
This place may be a greasy spoon to some people and for the hipsters, it will be a cool spot to take a selfie while on the island. This place is a local iconic spot for the every day man. As a native Floridian and Southern, are these places are few and far between these days. The average guest I would say when I was there this past Monday was about mid 60s. You can tell some people had money and then some people were describing a lunch in the middle of their blue-collar day. This place does close at two we got there at 1:15 and there was 10 people in line ahead of us. We went with their special which is a burger. We got the smaller quarter pound burger, which was more than enough once you added all the toppings that they suggest the fries were perfection. They were thick and crispy at the same time. Clearly they are fried but not greasy. I saw there Monday special of fried fish go by and I wanted it so bad but I had to start with the burger . Every day has a different special . I could not believe how fast they get your food out. The kitchen is literally behind the register, and they are hustling. Please make sure you bring cash tip to leave at the counter. Your food will be brought to you, but there is no tableservice per say. Bring quarters for the miss Pac-Man game which is $.50 . And I almost drove past this place because I was looking for a diner but it's a literally a gas station that looks like a closed in the late 70s and nothing has been altered . When you arrive, all the tables will be packed, but because they have a high turnover due to getting their food out so fast, don't worry you'll get a spot . They serve Mr. Pib and Pepsi products with free refills. Cannot wait to go back. Parking is at a premium. We got really lucky. This place is a hidden gem.

Yelp
The food and service were amazing! We came in a little on the late side for lunch. We asked if they were still serving, and they We could order. BEST shrimp, BEST fries, BEST slaw, BEST hushpuppies! Simply the BEST!

Ak L.

Yelp
Tried it for the first time today. Had the shrimp and grouper plates. Both were good, but a little pricey. Onion rings were a little over cooked. Not sure why they think they need to add sugar to the hushpuppies- Some onions would have been great.
google avatar

Yelp
Luv these local places. Fast and friendly service. Very affordable $30 for 2 sandwiches, drinks and fries. A bit too salty for me but friend luv it.

Yelp
If your coming down to Fernandina Beach, definitely come early and have either breakfast (which is awesome) or come to T-Rays for lunch (doubly awesome)! I do not remember all of the daily specials, but here are a few of my favorites- Amazing fried chicken, Thursdays is chicken & dumpling day (come early for it, because it's popular and sells out, meatloaf with grilled onions, best fried shrimp and you get coleslaw and hush puppies and fries, I substitute for the onion rings and wow are they good, fish sandwich, burgers are off the chart delicious, I have heard the tuna is delicious and if you get a salad trust me it's a BIG salad full of goodness. I will go on the record to say it's all good and I would try anything that T-Ray makes. If he said let me make you a surprise, I would be OK! Inside and outside picnic table seating, so grab your food and make some new friends outside or inside. Like Tony the Tiger says, Its great!
google avatar

Crystal O.

Yelp
John wanted lunch and I spotted T-Rays, normally we are in Fernandina on days when T-Rays is closed- but we lucked out! The packed parking lot was the real draw to go back- but we also looked at the menu before deciding. John and I split the fish fry of the day and it was perfectly breaded and fried. John is still talking about that fish a week later! I have to admit- we end up in Fernandina when they are open, we'll be stopping again!
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
I have been here for breakfast and lunch. It's always a great experience! This is an old gas station converted to a restaurant. The decor is great, they even kept the old pumps. You stand in line to order at the counter, then you find a seat and they deliver your food. This particular day I ordered the cheeseburger, with french fries and onion rings. The burger was great, not dry, cooked perfectly. The fries and onion rings were good as well. Love the sweet tea too!
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
Went for lunch to get one of their very good hamburgers before having a beach afternoon. Decided to get two crabcakes to take home for dinner as I did not want to get out after the beach. That was a great decision. Those were the two best crabcakes I think I've ever had full of meat and season just right. And they were left over. I'll definitely be back to try fresh at the restaurant.
google avatar

Catrina L.

Yelp
Service is great, food is amazing! Try the cinnamon rolls! Cute, old style atmosphere.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The service was great and the prices were somewhat low for how great the food was. The food was great, all I the food tasted fresh and like they put a lot of effort into it. As for the atmosphere, I loved it. It had an old school retro look to it. If you are passing by town and want somewhere to eat, I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Salvatore S.

Yelp
Had bacon egg cheese and sausage egg cheese on the famous biscuit. Both were very good. Biscuit gave it some nice texture and we ordered them with double egg so it hit just right. Will need to go back for the burger... Next time in Amelia it is a must!!!
google avatar

Janet W.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered take out after reading the Yelp recommendations. He ordered a fried shrimp platter, which I could tell was a favorite from all the other people who ordered the same. It was a generous portion of fried shrimp and the cocktail sauce was a delicious combination. The fries were of and fresh as well. My Hsu and ate all the coleslaw, so it must have hit the spot too! I ordered a small burger which was plenty big to me! I am not usually a hamburger person, but everyone raved about them in the reviews so I wanted to give it a try. It was perfect--the meat was tender and the bread was soft, and the tomatoes were perfect. Even though I did not eat in, I liked all the various memorabilia from schools and teams supported!
google avatar

Denise K.

Yelp
T-Rays has a great breakfast. I had an egg sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious. Looks like an old gas station, which is really cool. Loved it.
google avatar

Yelp
Best fried shrimp on the island. Love this place. I have been disappointed in any breakfast or lunch I have had there.

Yelp
If your looking for an audacious burger, then look no further than T-Rays. My wife and I have passed by this restaurant without stopping for many years because we always seemed to have some place to be and were short on time. NO MORE!!!! We stopped, We ate, We where floored at how GREAT their "Big T Burger with cheese and bacon" was. It was AWESOME. I've had the burgers from Tasty's and I've also had burgers from CAROLINA Jax which has been featured on Cooking Channel's Food Paradise and I think T-Rays beats all of the other burgers in the area HANDS DOWN! T-Rays also serves Breakfast and they have Daily Lunch specials as well a a bunch of other sandwiches you may find to be scrumptiously delicious such as their FRIED BOLOGNA SANDWICH, BLACKENED MAHI SANDWICH, or their GRILLED OR FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH. My point being, come to Fernandina, stop by T-Rays and enjoy a little local hospitality and food. You WON'T REGRET IT!!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Cool idea for a restaurant! Old gas station converted years ago into a burger bar. The breakfast options - in particular, the gooey cinnamon rolls and savory grits - are worth an early morning wake-up call. Sit outside on picnic tables next to retired gas pumps for the full experience. Line gets long but moves quickly.
google avatar

SD S.

Yelp
Local must visit. Come hungry. Very nice staff. Burgers are famous but breakfast is great and the daily lunch specials are excellent.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Love T-rays for breakfast or lunch. They do get busy, but if you call your order in you can skip the line. Everything is good.
google avatar

Tony W.

Yelp
Awesome breakfast, worth the wait, ton of locals. Ordered the scrambler and little breakfast. Two huge biscuits two sausage patties gravy scrambled eggs eggcellent! A bit of pepper in the sausage or gravy made it great just the way it was. I usually add pepper and didn't. I'm usually a half a biscuit guy these were so good I are the whole plate. Wife enjoyed her little breakfast said the bacon was nice and crispy.
google avatar

Marc W.

Yelp
This place a MUST for fresh seafood. It's a small little spot that pumps out local fresh catches. The hours are not for everybody, but when you have the time. Check it out

George T.

Yelp
Best burgers on the island hands down. Is a local favorite and for good reason. Is great for a quick lunch and not that much more than fast food nowadays with the quality of the food 500% better

Lauren N.

Yelp
After hearing such hype over this restaurant, we finally stopped by for lunch and we were not terribly impressed. The lady at the counter was not at all friendly and the restaurant definitely could use a good cleaning. I understand the ambiance is supposed to be old and retro, but it doesn't need to look run down and poorly maintained. Our food was good, but nothing special. There are much nicer places to eat in the area.
google avatar

Rod M.

Yelp
Great hamburgers with fresh fixings. Hand patted fresh hamburgers cooked to order. Lots of other options besides hamburgers.
google avatar

Tony P.

Yelp
Maybe the best lunch experience I've ever had. I almost never write a review immediately but I had to make sure I put my 2 cents in. I'm behind on several reviews, but I wanted to make sure as many people as possible are aware of this place. It's order at the counter style, and then they bring your food out to you. The place is a dive, with a counter by the window and scuffed up tables. The place is crazy busy, with limited parking. There seems to be an abundance of street parking though. The menu isn't huge, they have specials everyday, but breakfast is only served until 1030am. Judging by how good my lunch was, I'm going to have to make an effort to get here early some time soon. My wife didn't want anything battered so I ordered here the trip fish plate with onion rings and slaw. They gave a her a couple of hush puppies? They were little seasoned bread balls that I ate and dipped in the delicious cocktail sauce. Her fish looked perfect. I didn't try it because I had enough of my own food to contend with. The onion rings were in the top 3 I've ever had. I had the blackened mahi sandwich with lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. The fish was so tender and juicy, I didn't really need the tartar sauce. The bun was super soft, the fries cooked perfectly. But the star of the show is the cole slaw side I ordered. Hands down the best I've ever had. There is like relish in it, and some secret seasoning that made it to die for. Come here ASAP and order some slaw. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
So glad we stopped in, great atmosphere , great local spot. Comfort food served comfortably. We had the burgers, cooked perfectly with all the necessary trimmings , they got it right!

Yelp
Amazing food!!! Come out and visit a local restaurant, and if your visiting come downtown and look them up!

Randi Z.

Yelp
Gastropub....found this one on Yelp Walked in the door grabbed a menu, ordered at the counter and in less than 5 minutes our breakfast was served. Had the scramble- biscuit, sausage patties, eggs all smothered in the BEST country gravy I've ever had!! If you're on Amelia Island stop in a grab a bite; this place is worth the wait.
google avatar

Rebecca T.

Yelp
Make sure to check their hours and make your way to T Rays! The best breakfast, burgers and shrimp!

George S.

Yelp
Local food that is very good and consistent. Fried shrimp platter is my go to . Probably the best on island.
google avatar

Tanya H.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying we are seafood people but this places burgers are KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF DANG AMAZING! literally probably one of the BEST burgers I've ever had! My bf and I shared a burger and fried shrimp plate and I'll be honest; I wish I kept the whole burger to myself lololol. This place gets really busy but you can always order ahead online and head straight to the pick up area! No need to wait in line at the register to order.

Velda W.

Yelp
T-Rays never disappoints. I just wish I had remembered it was fried chicken day before I ordered little T's but my meal was still great.
google avatar

Jack H.

Yelp
My experience at T-Rays was different than most of the reviewers here. I visited T-Rays for breakfast on the Friday before Labor Day weekend, and ordered the Western omelette. It sounded good on the menu, but it didn't look anything like an omelette (more like a large overcooked egg tortilla filled with ham and veggies) and the inside of the "omelette" was incredibly wet from the ingredients collected together inside. The grits were just alright, but the cheese topping overwhelmed them. The biscuit was average at best, and the orange juice was simply horrible. Sort of pitiful that a breakfast place in Florida can't serve decent orange juice. Worst of all, the countertops were slippery (i.e., not clean) and the utensils were slightly greasy. A couple of locals strongly recommended T-Rays, but I was very disappointed.
