The 19 Best Restaurants in Cairo, Egypt | Eater

"A tablia is a low, round table, commonly found in rural areas of Egypt; often a gathering place for family dinners, it’s a symbol of community. Evoking traditions of the matriarchs who serve their families at tablias, this small, inconspicuous restaurant, nestled in one of the many alleyways of Downtown Cairo, is owned and operated by home cook Samar, her mother, two sisters, and aunt. The menu changes daily, usually decided just a day before or early the same morning, providing just enough time for the quintet to purchase fresh ingredients and prepare meals before the doors open at 4:00 p.m. You can call in the afternoon to ask about the menu, or, like most customers, simply arrive and prepare to be surprised (and well-fed). This is about as close to home-cooked Egyptian food as visitors are likely to experience." - Laila Hassaballa

It was a very good experience. The food changes daily according to the menu of the day; there is no fixed menu. The food tasted homemade because it was truly prepared by Egyptian women. The service was excellent, as the same people who cooked the food were also serving. And at the end, they served us complimentary tea. The prices were a bit high, but the food was very clean and fresh.

Wonderful authentic Cairo vibe. We had a table of three and ordered two pan-fried rice stuffed whole chicken meals with molokhia and a beef picatta meal with white rice, a mushroom soup and three mombar dishes l for appetizers. Everything feels and tastes homemade, the chicken is stuffed with rice and chicken liver and gizzard seasoned with black pepper, the molokhia texture was perfect and it has the right balance between molokhia and garlic confitt. The picatta was well done and had a creamy white sauce. The mombar had a lovely filling of the classic Egyptian mahshi (rice, tomato, dill, onions) The portions were fulfilling. The place also serves stuffed pigeons & Vine leaves tajin as a regular specials every Sunday.

The food here, confirmed by our Egyptian friend living in Cairo is so tasty and authentic, that she refused to answer if it was better than her mum's! The ambience, location and position of the restaurant is unique, not to everyone's taste but we loved it, it was a quiet oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle from Cairo. I contacted the owner on WhatsApp and she sent me the menu the night before our booking at 11pm (that's when she knew what will be on the menu!) The menu featured 4 options sets, for us it was Beef Tagine, Chicken with Bechamel (an Egyptian creation!) Chicken Liver or Vege stew. We came for the Molokhia which was very slimey and tasty and garlicky, and the eggplant pickles were divine and spicy! Note to all guests, you will be begged and sometimes harrased gently by the street cats, if you want them to shop CLAP YOUR HANDS! which is easy to do with wonderful food made with love. PS: Yes the tables could have been cleaner, it could have just been some dust that fell from cigarettes, also there's definitely a 12% charge for tourists. 3 of us paid 1200 Egyptian pounds in total, incl 3 menu sets, Molokhia, 4 hand made traditional Teas. $23 to nourish 3 people with love. If you want mystery-meat shawarma go elsewhere

This place is not friendly to foreigners. After the meal, a 25% service charge is charged. The food is expensive, 400-500 per person. Because of this restaurant, I have a very bad impression of Egypt! It's very bad here, Egypt is very bad, my friends and I will never come to Egypt again.

Fantastic Egyptian food. The stuffed pigeon with cinnamon scented rice was extraordinary and the chicken with rice was served with the most delicious herbs and lemon&almond cream. I totally recommend this place! Very kind and friendly service ❤️ Support local women ✊

Great, authentic Egyptian good prepared and served by a lovely and welcoming family. Few options each day. Don’t expect a lengthy menu. But what they have is delicious, highly recommend! Plus, fun casual atmosphere captures downtown Cairo vibe perfectly.

Very tasty local food, big portions and great atmosphere (the place is located centrally but in an interior alley, so you won't be bothered by the traffic). The staff is super helpful and friendly, the young waiter that was serving us had a really good English. The menu version for foreigners (as mentioned in the other reviews) might be a bit more pricy than the menu for locals. They also offer vegetarian options, as well as inside and outside sitting.
