"Sushi Tonari means ‘sushi next door’, and indeed Tachigui Sushi Tonari is tucked away next to its flagship restaurant. The intimate space, quick turnover and experience of the youthful staff achieve a comfortable informality. Ordering is refreshingly casual, too: requesting one piece at a time is fine. The prevailing theme is ‘vinegar and sushi’. Rice seasoned with rice vinegar harmonises beautifully with the oil of the fish. Reservations, orders and billing are all managed on a digital system. Standing and eating, Edo’s street-stall dining culture, updated for the modern era." - Michelin Inspector

Found this restaurant via the Michelin Guide and it was super easy to book online. We were the first guests to arrive for the night but it filled up quickly! The standing sushi omakase is an interesting concept and is certainly fast paced, we were done in about forty minutes and I'd be surprised if anyone stays for longer than an hour. Orders are placed through the tablet in front of each diner, they have a good list of drinks including non-alcoholic options. It was a great experience watching the skilled chefs prepare each item in front of us. Hard to pick a highlight when they were all so good! Service was good and very attentive throughout the experience with our tea regularly topped up. Tachigui Sushi Tonari offers a unique experience in the competitive Tokyo dining scene and I would highly recommend it.

Reservation was easy to make online and can be done for solo travelers. Restaurant opened at 6pm and that was my reservation time, so I was a bit hesitant to go in as I wasn't sure if they were ready to open. Standing bar means you are not supposed to stay long which I think is quite suitable for travelers accustomed to fast service and has a busy itinerary, but the downside is if you are already tired after a day of lots of walking you cannot rest your feet :D Delicious sushi and be sure to order additional pieces after the omakase. There are lots of delicious and rare options on the a la carte menu. I love that I can order from an iPad mini instead of trying to communicate with the chef, whom I always worry about interrupting. At the end of the meal the chef asked how I found this place and was surprised that I found it through a Hong Kong youtuber. During my time slot, I was the only tourist. Maybe now that this restaurant has been featured more in Western media this is no longer the case. In terms of Tokyo sushi options, I would rank this as a high mid-tier in terms of reasonable price, relaxed atmosphere, and quick pacing, worth a detour to Azabu-Juban.

If you want a great value Michelin Guide omakase sushi experience, this is it. The chefs are incredibly attentive and happy. I deduct one star as this is an Edo style standing only service and is typically over in less than 30 minutes. After a long day walking around Tokyo I would love to sit down and savour this incredible meal.

Love this place, and will certainly return. The sushi was all delicious, and they have a wide variety of drink options. The staff is very friendly, the price is reasonable, and it's an overall fun and delicious experience. It's pretty small, so be sure to make a reservation if you don't want to wait. Also, it's kind of hard to find the door, so allow yourself a little extra time for that.

Absolutely delicious high end sushi, the best we had in our recent trip. We order the omakase and additional a la carte pieces on the ipad. Ordering was easy. The star of the show is the quality of the sushi. Each piece was delicious and close to perfection. Watching the sushi chefs craft while standing was also an interesting but good experience. Service is good and quick as is it a small shop. Staff speaks English and place is foreigner friendly. I thought it was a good value for what I paid and the quality of the sushi and service I got.

I cannot give it a 5/5 because I did not find that one exceptional piece that truly astonishes you. Omakase: JPY 6,600 Sake: JPY 900 Booking: Yes, over the phone >> Taste: Every piece was well executed. Fish and shellfish were very fresh and of high quality, but I kept waiting for that amazing bite that never came. Octopus nigiri (Tako) was the highlight for me. However, I felt the rice was blank. I prefer the taste of vinegar. Zaku sake from Mie prefecture went very well, fresh and fruity! >> Experience: That said, the experience was still worthwhile. The entire staff was very welcoming and professional. Thank you. In my opinion, this is the place to have a quick yet satisfying and tranquil meal, alone. No one spoke at the small counter, which allowed me to fully concentrate and savor every single nigiri.

I would hazard to say this was the best meal I’ve had in my life. Exceptional quality and food preparation, every flavour was isolated and heightened. Fresh, clean, prepared expertly in front of you in a very intimate dining space with friendly and communicative staff (my Japanese is minimal). Compared to various Michelin starred restaurants, this was a step above. I wish I lived in Tokyo and could come back weekly. The grilled blackthroat seaperch was a highlight for me.

Came here to say after seeing all the good reviews. Left the place feeling unfilled and disappointed. We had the 6600 omakase meal, we had other omakase and conveyor belt sushi here in Japan before, and those experiences were A LOT BETTER. The sushi rice itself was more on the sour side, it was also more warm than usual. I was also shocked that miso soup counted as a part of the 10 course meal. The most shocking part was we had an eggplant as the first course. Don’t come here if you want fresh and good sushi. Didn’t feel the fish being that fresh. Not worth the hype.
